- "Call Me a Princess" (Ashman-Menken) with Courtney Reed as Jasmine and her Female Attendants in a 2011 Seattle world premiere/tryout performance of Disney's "Aladdin." "Call Me a Princess" was written for the original animated musical but dropped. And by the time the stage "Aladdin" arrived on Broadway in 2014, "Call Me a Princess" was again dropped, with Jasmine getting a new introductory song, "These Palace Walls" (Beguelin-Menken). HD1080p

I have the Toronto cast but this is a different cast except jasmine
@@cassandrafaithstrand9372 I agree with you but I want to watch why me and Prince Ali in the whole scenes in the show
Maybe if this show return to the fifth avenue and we could put on tour with me James and Jonathan we will have a beautiful girl playing Jasmine and Don Darryl Rivera
In the original film script Jasmine was a true shallow and spoiled princess and this song was used to show that. Then the story changed drastically and this song got cut as Jasmine's character was completely changed so the song didn't fit anymore. I like the idea of using this song in the Broadway show to show her trying to deter the arrogant suitors coming to marry her. It is actually a really good idea, but I can see why people didn't get it. It upset people to see Jasmine one of the most popular and iconic princesses acting like Veruca Salt, even if it was a joke.
Thanks for that very illuminating comment.
And also in the original treatment Aladdin actually didn't get with Jasmine in the end. Instead he got with his best friend-A tomboy named Abbi.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 can you put the Seattle production Prince Ali
I do wish Disney would try this princess type again a spoiled sweet 16 a female Kuzco.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Jasmine always been a spoiled little brat
I first heard this song when Courtney performed it at one of the Broadway Princess Parties, and on its own it was so fun to see and hear. I definitely understand why it wasn't the best song to incorporate into the musical, but you guys should definitely check out the Broadway Princess Party version she sings!!! It's so good
I wish people didn't comment on videos of this song saying it's stupid and sucks and doesn't fit Jasmine's character without bothering to look up the context behind it. I even saw a commenter here say whoever wrote it should be fired--it was written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken themselves back when Jasmine was meant to be a totally different character, who was singing it unironically because she was actually like this and wasn't even the love interest! But THIS version for the Broadway show is her pretending to be a spoiled bratty princess to scare off suitors, and not only is that a pretty smart plan but she's getting to have a ton of fun while doing it! I love this song and wish it was still in the show tbh.
Thank you---highly intelligent and informative comment.
I fucking love this song! Alright, so here's the plot deal for people who don't know- Jasmine's personality isn't any different from the movie- she's scamming them. She sings this song so that her suitors think she's obnoxious and selfish and leave on their own will because they don't want to marry someone like that.
So Ahmed doesn't get his tiger
I saw Aladdin multiple times during the Toronto tryout. The show played with this song when it opened and by the time it closed, the creative team had replaced it with These Palace Walls. I seem to recall yet another song that was very briefly instituted for Jasmine before Palace Walls was ultimately chosen, but I can't for the life of me remember the title. The run in Toronto was very bumpy with drastic book changes being implemented almost daily. Originally, Aladdin's buddies commented on nearly all of the action... describing to the audience, for example, what a "split scene" was when two different bits of action were occurring on stage at the same time. It was a little cringey. Also, when the show began in Toronto it had a rather sad finale with Aladdin and Jasmine strapping on camel costumes with signs on the rear ends that said "just married." By the time it left Toronto, they'd replaced it with the magic carpet finale.
Oh they weren’t kidding. This is rough
This song was how we were originally inn the first draft of the cartoon introduced to Jasmine after she is told by her father she has to mary before her next birthday, and its to both her father and rajah.

Saw Aladdin in previews in Toronto just before it went to Broadway, and this number was definitely the worst in the show at the time. Very glad they changed it!
I did not know that "Call Me a Princess" was still in the show in Toronto. Thanks for the info.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 It was and while it is an improvement to THIS version, it was still bad. They changed it to make it a BIT more clear that Jasmine was ACTING like a pain including having a short scene before the song plotting with her ladies in waiting to scare away the suitors. They then throw together an over the top outfit for her with things lying around her rooms like the curtains and the pillows. And as she is barking at the princes and they are jumping she is breaking her own fake persona with her ladies giggling and laughing. They also have the sultan being much more vocal yelling about how she is acting out of character. And improvement over THIS but still all wrong for the character.
They must have cut this number in Toronto during previews because it's not in the tape of the production from Toronto. It's just awful and seems to have wandered in from another show.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 can you put Prince Ali
@@manuelaguiar8753 I'm no expert on "Aladdin," but according to the programs, "Prince Ali" opened the second act in both Seattle and NY. Was there a difference?
I don't know much about Call Me A Princess, but I love the final character choices for Jasmine in Aladdin a lot, it's just the version of the full deleted song I kind of like as much as These Palace Walls and To Be Free in the musicals, when she pretended to be pampered and spoiled to scare away the previous suitors in the movie.
Thank you for posting this, the jazzy Toronto version got the copyright booted off and I’ve missed it so much
I love musicals!

I get that she’s trying to deter the suitors, but it feels like far too much. Fun concept, cool song on its own, and everyone sounds terrific, but I can see how it ultimately just didn’t work.
Jasmine needs to try to know her own suitors
Prince Ali
Yeah I think the film works better with rajah doing it and jasmine all being nice to him.
You know, I don't get why people were so negative about this song's inclusion. I know it doesn't fit with who Jasmine is as a person but, I mean, that's kinda the point. She's capitalizing on the perception people have of her as a spoiled rich brat, and we go through a process of learning who she really is and what she wants and the depth she has, and I think that's kinda clever. I definitely like it a lot better than the other miserably generic I Want songs that have been written for her instead. Let her be fun and interesting!
And actually, I've always kinda resented that Disney female leads almost never have significant personality flaws that they have to learn from the way the men do. They're lovely role models, but they don't get to really be human beings. I appreciate that they've been sort of moving away from that with some of their recent movies, but part of me feels like it's too little too late.
Hooray---glad someone finally got this. She's having fun.
I like that idea in theory, but the song as it is doesn’t translate that as well as it could’ve. Besides, if you want a vapid Jasmine with hidden depths, there’s always Twisted!
@@AlwaysM0ndayy Oh yeah, Twisted is definitely a fantastically executed show.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 yes that much is clear! I'm sure she must have been devastated when this was cut, as was I. This was Jasmine's moment, and I think it made her character so much more fun.
I want to know how different the Seattle production was than the actual show.
The Seattle production of this was the uncut first draft of the cartoon before the big wigs made them go back to the drawing board for give the pun, but yes all of the songs except for the new ones for the stage, are new adaptations from the original demo's or cast recordings from the first draft, where there was less comedy, and aladdin mother was still in the movie, and call me a princess, and the song for jivar and the part Iago called humiliate the boy are my two favorite along with high adventure, and the song with his three friends. I was upset cause as a kid, i had put together my own script of an aladdin musical based on a mixture of the music from the first draft, but keeping the script based closer to the final film, cause come on, Disney has money they could have made a great rajah animatronic, same as the wolves in the first months of previews of beauty and the beast, along with having a monkey turned elephant. But I loved what they did with it in seattle, and have not seen what changes they did except on the recording of the show.
It’s my favorite
I love Courtney Reed.
Oooh! This song was supposed to be in the original animated movie
I'm guessing that Jasmine only sung this song to make it clear that she'd much rather marry for love, than marry just because of her father's silly law.
Yep this is a song that was actually written by Howard Ashman for the film. In the original draft Jasmine was a spoiled brat and this was her song. But the script changed drastically as did Jasmine's character so the song was cut. They used it here to show her trying to deter the arrogant suitors coming to marry her and act the role of the spoiled brat. But audiences didn't really get the joke and didn't like seeing one of the most popular and iconic princesses acting like Veruca Salt so it was ultimately cut. It got cut from the film and the musical which is kind of funny.
OMG Where’d you get this? And follow up question, is there a full copy of the Seattle version in existence?
Yeah can you upload the full Seattle production or at least some of the songs
Can I see it it's not for me it's for my father I want to show it from him I saw in Seattle but I went with my mother 2011 but I want the full copy because I want to show it to my father
Can you get me into full copy
Courtney Reed is amazing and she always sounds stunning.. but wow, I’m not a big fan of this song
She's so sassy and savage when she sang Call Me a Princess!!!!!!! #princessjasmine #aladdin #jasmine
I have seen every show at the 5th ave in Seattle for the past ten years and this might have been the worst thing I have seen there. The flying carpet was so painful to watch. No magic at all. Wish they could have mustered up a bit more budget.
Can you Upload the cut villain Song of jafar "Why me?"?

I like this song but not the way they did it. The demo version is so much smoother and nicer

This doesnt sound like a song jasmine would sing this is more of a song Charlotte from princess and the frog would sing
Well, that was the point. She’s really gotta come off as spoiled and obnoxious if she wants to fend off the suitors.
Agreed! I think in an interview it was mentioned that this cut song was from early on when they were going to make Jasmine a bratty Princess. There were a LOT of changes when the movie was being worked on.

I have to say. This song is catchy, I like the idea, and she’s doing very well. But don’t INTRODUCE a character like this. We should have a scene with her before this about how she really doesn’t want to get married, and then the gag of the song is more obvious. But the way it was just made it sting in the moment and make you feel embarrassed for everyone in the theater when it’s revealed right after that this is just an act. It’s silly to have an “I Am” song that’s the exact opposite of who she is without clueing us in first. But Howard Ashman wrote this, so he can’t be fired for it.

This is..... shockingly awful.
Sultan disliked this
What the heck is this crap!? Whoever thought this was a good idea, whoever actually gave this the green light, should definitely have been fired or something. Yikes.
Calm down. It was literally *Howard Ashman and Alan Menken* who first wrote this song for the 1992 movie intending for Jasmine to be a typical spoiled princess, and then they tried to reincorporate it into the musical but in the context of Jasmine trying to scare off potential suitors. Nobody’s firing Alan Menken
@@p0lyxena ok, well that's not so bad then. Jasmine's characterization wasn't totally set at that point, so that's fine. But whoever tried to bring it back for the musical made a really bad decision!
