Affinity Designer Workflow. Combining Vector and Pixel.

  • A video showing the workflow in Affinity Designer 1.5. Starting out in pixel persona and sketching, then moving over to the draw persona to do vector inking and coloring and then back to pixel persona for final rendering. This process works for any design process from character design to logo design. This is an Affinity Designer exclusive workflow, you can't do this in Adobe Illustrator.

    Affinity needs to make an VECTOR ERASER just like illustrator

    • @ai-man212
      @ai-man212 3 года назад

      You would want to start with a simple mask that blocks out what you don't want to see, but then you'd want AI to go in and replot all the points so that there is a logical flow that gives you the new desired image and new layers if necessary. Automatic AI chop shop. Shouldn't be that difficult.

    Great tutorial! Just got Affinity designer after working with Illustrator for ever. This is exactly what I wanted to learn to get me going.

    It would be helpful to plan and organize your presentation before hitting Record. Good info, for the most part, but so much wasted time trying to find the info amidst all the ums, ahs, here there and everywhere of the presenter.

    thanks for the video,
    it’s a little improvised, like a go-with-he-flow presentation, but your ‘heart’ is in the right place.
    it’s actually been very useful in making one better realize the toggle between Vector and Bitmap.
    as for the photoshop-like brushes.... well.. you’ve got affinity photo. ;)

    I felt that mixing vectors with rasters together is a great idea and I’ve done it several times using Affinity Designer. I enjoyed using it to create some great concept artwork of my personal projects. But someone told me that combining rasters with vectors is a noob mistake and a waste of time and suggest me to stick with using only Photoshop for concept art at a fast pace. Do you agree with that statement?

    Besides having to hop between illustrator and PS, its very very expensive

    I just discovered Affinity and am absolutely in love with it. I'm a GIMP and Inkscape user, and I would always create a design in GIMP and then have to import it into Inkscape to vectorise it. I'm rubbish at creating a design from vector. Lol. Anyway, thank you for the video!

  • @ai-man212
    @ai-man212 3 года назад

    There's really nothing else like it. I agree with the previous comment, there should be a vector eraser (perhaps mask-hide to AI recalculate-and-replot-based), but really, there are so many workarounds to that, it's not necessary.

    Hello Steve Oliver!
    12:13 you change the thickness of a brush stroke inside of the stroke. Ist it possible to make it in pixel persona? I didn’t find that option.

    Sorry, but I got sooooo weary of all the "you knows" (a really bad speech habit). Had to stop watching. 👎 There are other, more palatable tutorials on using these two personas. Maybe you (and your audience) would benefit if you scripted your comments. Best wishes.

    If only Serif were to concentrate more on Designer and stop pushing it's iPad version & Publisher beta before giving us a live paint too, shape builder tool and a few others as offered by Illustrator CC, then it would be a silver bullet graphics suite par excellance.

    If I already have Clip Studio Paint EX, which allows me to sketch in raster layer then ink vector layers and color the vector art layer (same doc), what is the advantage of Affinity Designer? I have been thinking of getting this program, but wondered if it has any advantages over CSP’s vector drawing capabilities.

    Hi Steven, nice video tutorials.
    i enjoy it ... would it be possible to make the refreshed/remixed version of this tuto but using the recent versions of Affinity ?
    Even with beta version of the software, i believe your perception and application of the workflow have improved since last year.

    So now that you have pixel layers within or under the vector layers that mask them, when you complete the drawing and export, do the pixel layers become "vectored" so when enlarged it looks fine? (Not sure the correct terminology I'm a beginner). Thanks!

    • @StevenRazorblade
      @StevenRazorblade  7 лет назад +1

      SlyRy the original sketching that was step 1 should only be used as reference for creating vector in part 2 then that layer won't be seen anymore. The added shading on the last step with the pixel brush will stretch if you upsize the picture however because it's shading and not crisp lines this will be hard to see unless it's sized drastically bigger. Pixel layers never turn to vector. If you have a project where you want to work small but want to be able to size it bigger in the future, I would up the DPI of the project settings to 600 or even 900.

    Hi. I am customizing text. Do you know how to offset text like Illustrator?

    • @StevenRazorblade
      @StevenRazorblade  7 лет назад

      Hello, unfortunately you can't currently do that in Affinity Designer alone. You need to use a combination Affinity Photo and Designer to do it. Offsetting text and grouped layers is the one thing about AD that really stinks right now. They have recently been posting teaser videos of new features in Affinity 1.6 and they do have this on the roadmap of things to add so I think that this will be updated in the next version and I think the update is just around the corner... Fingers crossed.

      +L C true but CPS is very cluttered in it's layout and menu system + it's so targeted towards anime drawing I feel that it's not as flexible overall vs affinity designer. But CPS is still a really good drawing app I agree:)

    • @StevenRazorblade
      @StevenRazorblade  7 лет назад

      I haven't heard anyone say Fireworks for quite some time. is that even still available? Yes I would highly recommend it over Fireworks. I used Fireworks for a long time when it was Macromedia after Adobe acquired it I only used it for a bit longer then ditched it altogether for PS, but ya as far as I can remember of fireworks Affinity would be a good switch.

    • @terencemolloy9450
      @terencemolloy9450 7 лет назад +2

      I still use it for PNG etc, but its no good for SVG. Its lightweight compared to PS, plus i don't want to do the Adobe subscription since I'm not a pro (yet). I need something for web graphics and this seems to fit the bill. I like to buy software not rent it. Old school i guess.

    • @ChengManChing
      @ChengManChing 7 лет назад

      Exactly what I was thinking. I just downloaded the trial version of Designer today and am 99% sure I'm going to buy it. Fireworks was way ahead of its time back in the day with its vectors that can look like rasters. I loved working in it and did everything I could inside FW instead of Photoshop. Then Adobe bought it and killed it...
      Sketch might be another app to check out if you're on a Mac and do a lot of UI design.
