8 Terrible Levels That Nearly Ruined Great Games: Commenter Edition

  • Опубликовано: 1 авг 2024
  • When we got all salty about levels that nearly ruined our favourite games, we asked which terrible levels in otherwise great games ground your gears. Fiddly GTA San Andreas missions, misjudged Deus Ex: Human Revolution boss battles, and an entire ethereal dimension from Dragon Age: Origins figure in your hall of shame. Subscribe for a new countdown weekly, why not: www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
    The bit where you do yoga in GTA 5, hop around a circus made of meat in Psychonauts and Dark Souls' poxy Blighttown also crop up in the comments, alongside anything involving a remote control vehicle in GTA San Andreas.
    I know we all remember GTA San Andreas being perfect, but then we also remember it looking pretty good, and a quick trip back to Los Santos circa 2004 reveals a very different, much blockier story.
    As several commenters noted, GTA San Andreas at its lowest ebb was the Red Baron mission in which you tried to fly an uncooperative remote control biplane through narrow city streets while machine-gunning delivery boys to death, like a hero.
    Elsewhere, commenters raised the spectre of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's jarringly stealth-proof boss battles, as if we needed reminding of the time we had our cybernetic asses handed to us by an anthropomorphic tank because we'd sunk all our Praxis points into non-combat skills.
    Reminders were equally unnecessary for the tediousness of Dragon Age: Origins' Fade. This was an alternate dimension of mystic energies and muddy textures where, if you played as a mage, you got sent right at the beginning of the game.
    In the fiction of the game, this is a dangerous and harrowing rite of passage, much like trying jagerbombs for the first time. In my lived experience as someone who always chooses to play mage, it's also a proper slog, for which your only friendly company is a talking mouse. In fact, can we do a jagerbomb ritual instead?

By the same token, single player had a bit where you had to snoop on people having sex (damn paparazzi) and got topless lapdances but online the closest you could get was fully clothed sex in cars or clothed lapdances.

    The Fade in Dragon Age Origins is more likely referred to the Broken Circle quest and not the Mage Origin. It involves traveling around to gain different forms, often back tracking to get to new areas so you can find and defeat the five guardians to unlock access to the main demon. Then there are optional bits, like rescuing your companions from their dreams and find bonus attribute points. Thankfully, someone made a mod to skip most of the fade bit.

    • @rouliettapouet9213
      @rouliettapouet9213 5 лет назад +11

      Indeed. When she ended that section with the commentary about the Fade actually being a pretty good rite of passage for your mage character I thought it was just setting up a "but unfortunately you then have to go back there for the endless Broken Circle questline" comic transition into talking about what people actually dislike about it. Maybe they blocked that quest from their memories.

      If you're talking about the parking lot, it's not a tutorial, it's an actual mission that is a reference to the movie "The Driver" from 78.
      The game has actual tutorials, you can find it under "Training" in the main menu.

      @jasonxhx7854 7 лет назад +7

      Tudor Ciubotaru it was patched to be more forgiving but it used to be if you drove too close to the train it looked like your bullets were hitting the guys on the train but they were actually clipping the corner of the roof and you'd lose time after time vs what seemed like an invincible bad guy.

    • @davidmurray3542
      @davidmurray3542 6 лет назад +2

      I think it's more the frustration than anything else - firstly you're relying on Smoke to do all the shooting so even if you follow the train perfectly then you can fail, and secondly if you do fail then you're left in the middle of nowhere and have to drive all the way back to town to retry it.

    • @kailomonkey
      @kailomonkey 6 лет назад +1

      I also passed this first time unpatched. But when I replayed from the beginning I found it an issue! It seemed that being in a logical position relative to the enemies did nothing to help Big Smoke to shoot the enemies. But then when you found the less logical 'magic spot' they all die easily.
      Then as the last commenter said, generally any mission in any game which takes a part of success out of your hands and into shoddy AI, feels incredibly unfair and frustrating to fail... Then Big Smoke BLAMES YOU with all the attitude of the worst faults of humanity.

      @Neo-mt2lz 7 лет назад

      GZLAnnihilation which mission was that?

    • @ThatIrishLass
      @ThatIrishLass 7 лет назад +1

      I disagree. I thought the Halamshiral Palace was one of the best in all of Inquisition. Like you (imho erroneously) said with the fade, it's easy to figure out what to do, and it gives us a first-hand experience of the infamous Orlesian world of cutthroat politics we've been told about for three games. And all of the endings are fantastic. The Fade(at least the 'Broken Circle' one with Sloth that we're talking about) is an annoying instance of having to do x to get y but you need z to get x, so first you have to get w, which is protected by z. It may be clear(again, up for debate) what you have to do but the level design was godawful--the Halamshiral mission was a bit more mysterious, maybe, but it was more enjoyable and once you knew what to do it was fairly easy. I've been able to get 90+ on every playthrough, and I make a lot of elves.
      I mean, for chrissakes, there's a *reason* the DA modding community has made several mods to skip the Fade. It's annoying. And adds very little to the actual story.

    • @johnshade5066
      @johnshade5066 7 лет назад +4

      I understand how it could become dull, I mean I never really found it so, I but get it. If they had spiced up the Mako with more rpg elements (more weapon choices, maybe some kind of abilities) to match the rest of the game I certainly wouldn't have complained, probably would have made those sections at least a more interesting.
      As for the scanning I don't think anyone liked it, at all, makes you wonder how anyone in development thought that was a good idea. Unless of course you could sell the extra resources, then not so bad... well maybe for people who still hated all the time being wasted doing it.

    Vice City had a bit where you had to drop off bombs in a empty building with an RC helicopter so Burt Reynolds' character could blow it up and claim the insurance money or something. I could never do it before the timer ran out and as such I could never progress the story and never finished GTA Vice City. A similar thing happened in GTA4's Lost and the Damned where you had to steal a prison bus and get from point A to point B without causing any damage or before the timer ran out or some
    other Rockstar-style bullshit bad gameplay conceit. Never finished that either.

      The RC helicopter mission is not that hard. Start with the bomb on the highest level and work your way down. It's actually more simple that way and the love fist mission is easy if you turn the car around immediately and then drive on the long straight bridge and road.

      Dan Xepha if you have enough bullets for the stun gun, you can shoot him and then reload before he recovers and just repeat that until he dies. That's the only way I got through it. It doesn't count as a kill against the pacifist ending either

    • @mc_sea
      @mc_sea 7 лет назад

      For a game that encourages stealth a lot, it sure likes to make it hard to use. I feel like the beginning is hinting towards stealth upgrades but then the game makes it really hard to play that way.

    • @guftders
      @guftders 7 лет назад +3

      Ok, so I did Deus EX HR on the hardest difficulty, and this is how you beat the first boss (the others are stupidly easy after the first dude):
      YES. Invest in stealth if you're aiming for Pacifist. No question. If you want to kill everyone, don't bother, and invest in armor, fall damage and strength. Pacifist you'll want to prioritise Social Enhancer and Hacking skills (really helps you sneak around).
      HOWEVER. You REALLY don't need the tranq rifle (assuming you picked it up). Stun Gun is WAY better, and takes up less space.
      Get an assault rifle (if aiming for pacifist). Not even kidding. It helped me SOO much against Barratt. Get it early, and use. EVERY. SINGLE. Upgrade on it that you get. Once you've got as many upgrades are available in the first area, it will churn out damage like nothing. Also, use cover as much as possible. Don't poke your head up unless he's recharging the machine gun. Also. EMPs. Save them up like they're fucking gold. Cannot stress how important they are in keeping him from attacking. Try and save up the frags too, but obv, since you won't get the wall punch aug, it might not be feasible.
      TL;DR. For Pacifist, get an assault rifle early, Upgrade it a tonne, and your good to go.Hope this helps! :)

    • @Twilitparadox
      @Twilitparadox 7 лет назад

      Yeah... the Director's Cut edition fixes that problem by including a New Game + option that let you carry over all of your upgrades from the previous run, giving you the potential to fully max out your Augs by the end of your second play through. At that point the game practically plays itself and the bosses are almost laughably easy to take down. As you must have been playing the standard edition though, I can see how you would have had a hard time, to say the least.

    I personally found the Deus ex boss battles really easy. On the directors cut of the games some changes were made to the fights levels. On the first part there is an office you can climb a ladder to then you can hide in some vents and just take pot shots or if you have the upgrades hack the computer. On the second one as soon as it started I just lobbed an emp to stun her then through some grenades and it was done. The third one was the easiest as you just run to the upstairs bit grab a heavy box and wait for him m to follow you then just throw a box at him. It knocks him down leaving him vulnerable for you to unload all you hoarded ammo in to his head

      I enjoy the puzzle like parts of it. For example in one of the dreams you fight strong and weak mages, but the strong mages only use fire and the weak mages die to one fireball from the burning form which also completely negates the strong mages attacks. Everything else is kind of a slog.

      Luxaurus That's the main Fade part. A lot of the clips they were showing is the intro Fade segment if you started as a mage which I almost never did. Rogue/Thief types for life!
      Also I may be less annoyed by those sections cause I usually used Shale and she doesn't give a shit about the Fade attempting to screw with her.

      OgreSamanosuke Personally I found New Londo Ruins to be a lot worse than Blighttown. No bonfires, need of transient curse to kill enemies and (imo) unintuitive layout made it an absolute chore. Not to mention the whole Covenant of Artorias situation.

    As someone who just finished literally 2 hrs of cursing out the cameraman and their entire family tree bc of the janky-as-all-hell camera angles causing repeated failures in a simple puzzle, I submit the Power Plant level from Heavy Rain. The camera's already dodgy enough in the rest of the game, but its problems get amplified in that level and turn an otherwise straightforward puzzle into a teeth-grinding nightmare that makes you want to kill the protag for that section so you can get handed off to literally anybody else who's not in the godforsaken purgatory of the pipe maze

  • @Tadwinked
    @Tadwinked 7 лет назад +37

    The longer fade bit in DAO is definitely the most annoying quest in the fade. I don't think there's a quest in the fade that I actually like. The mage starter one in DAO is also annoying. Getting Hawke's friends out of the desire demon's grasp in DA2 was a little tedious. And even with the plot points, I didn't find the fade part after Adamant in DAI particularly interesting. (Also a little tedious, but you can run through it pretty quick if you don't do the side quests.)
    There are plenty of terrible areas in great games. Vault 34 from Fallout NV, for instance. Navigating that underwater, heavily irradiated maze looking for passwords is hell. Especially if you don't have the rebreather yet. The rest of it's not great fun either.

      Super Cat Really it depends on what playstyle you're going for. Any details on that? I myself am pretty good with dual wielding, I can do archery, I've recently tried alchemy, bare-handed, two handed, and several magic builds that do not include Creation maining, sadly not good with Creation magic. I managed a shield and made/sword recently, but I'm not as good with those. Now, which one do you need? Or would you prefer some general help, like where to go, or where to get some good loot? I'd love to help out

    • @spacecat109
      @spacecat109 6 лет назад

      Angelo Santos Preferably just general help, because I really haven't spent enough time in the game to have an idea of what build I would like. The one thing I'd like to go for though is a shape shifter at the moment.

    There is that one level in GunValkyrie in which you have to do a terribly long, aggravating and unforgiving jump-climbing to reach a boss, which was also very hard to beat, and that if it killed you, would send you all the way back to the start of the level, with all the frustrating annoyance it implies.

      Ares fight from God Of War (Blank, I'm pretty sure.) and the Boulder Running sections in RE4.
      Seriously, Ares you had to push the button at the SAME SPEED as the prompt, which, of course, was a really terribly looking thing, looking like a still button, rather than the button being pressed at the speed you need to hit it.
      RE4, it may have just been because my controller was buggy, but if I press the button like 100 times a millisecond, I still get bowled over, I think my controller was not registering half the button presses, but meh.
