  • Sometimes the opportunity to murder a game villain presents itself early on, but you let it slip by. Consider these times you could have killed your nemesis much, much earlier and been home in time for dinner, then subscribe to Outside Xbox: tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
    Early on in Rise of the Tomb Raider, for example, Lara gets the drop on the bad guys by beating them to a legendary lost tomb. She ends up with her gun to the sternum of Konstantin, the stigmata-having knife-liker who runs operations for a sinister and murdery cabal. Then she comes over all pacifist and puts the gun away.
    If this was a crisis of conscience for Lara, it was short-lived, because not 30 seconds later she sets off a bunch of explosives to destroy the tomb area with a cave-in.
    You know being crushed by falling masonry kills people as well, Lara? Hey, at least this way this priceless long lost is destroyed as well. Much better.

    I absolutely hated it when Kota kept me from killing Palpatine. If the game devs can't let me kill Palpatine for the sake of preserving the Star Wars timeline, they shouldn't give my character the chance to kill Palpatine and then make me watch said chance be pointlessly wasted because of that Light Side nonsense.

    • @death299
      @death299 8 лет назад +47

      +Joshua Moser why?
      in that situation the moment you rose your weapon like that you'd be dead
      similiar has happened to spies and agents before
      even if you HAD managed to kill him (unlikely) you would've turned him into a matyr, making it even more difficult to oppose the ideals he was after
      plus, not your job
      you were there to gather intel not kill the king
      a spy is never supposed to try and kill but rather do whatever they must
      undercover cops do this regularly (drugs, murder, torture..nasty affair)
      all you killing him would do is hasten war, and make the group you're fighting against near impossible to hunt and destroy
      sure shit went south due to sheperd..but no one knew that at the time, thus you were supposed to obey your orders
      besides a 3ish mission game would be...well bad even for a CoD game

    • @death299
      @death299 8 лет назад +22

      TK-315 CloneM most likely, sherperd was playing you from the go, meaning that they most likely had backups
      The thing about killing a groups leader..is often it causes dissarray then a reformation quickly with people now having a renewed reason to fight
      4 people weren't the entire group, and given all the effort and planning i'd wager there was a backup in the works in case sheperd or markarov died

    MGS3, ultimate case of this actually done right. You get a ten second window early on where the third main boss of the game, The End, is just sitting in a wheelchair, before being carted off into a warehouse by the guards. Perfect opportunity to kill the old bugger with a few sniper rounds, and completely avoid the 3rd boss later in the game (I wouldn't suggest it though, The End is a freakin awesome boss fight, but the opportunity to down possibly the most dangerous and difficult boss of the game early is there if you wish to take it).

    • @Dracinard
      @Dracinard 7 лет назад +4

      ThePolohetfan276 Same boss in the same game, actually! That's a way to deal with the End if you don't snipe him, but you miss out on an awesome boss fight. And if you wait less than... I think it's a week?... for the End to die of old age, he'll be right behind you when you reload the save.
      Damn... MGS3 really was the best of the series. Controls were rubbish compared to MGSV, of course, but it was a much tighter game overall, with so many clever little interactions. And a sense of humor, and an incredible theme song. And you got to fight a Russian giant with electric knuckles, a living hive of bees, a vampiric spider monkey looking mercenary, the 100 year old "grandfather of sniping" with photosynthetic skin, and two ghosts, one of whom jumps around in a space suit with a flamethrower. It was amazing.

    Pagan Min is literally the "Good" person in Far Cry 4 if you paid any attention to the story.
    The Golden Path simply wants to make a terrorist state (Or Drug country.).. Pagan tried to improve the country at the very least. The stabbing is done because he takes drastic measures against Golden Path (Which is a terrorist group.) and the reason for the stabbing at the start is because his orders weren't listened and they risked his "Son's" life.
    I think the best part is the hidden ending at the start, as that would've been the most logical outcome.. And it was put into the game. xD

    This one of the reasons I loved the original Deus Ex.
    You were able to kill bosses before the boss fights using underhanded methods. (i.e. Planting a bomb before they monologue, sniping them as they are discussing their evil plans, saying phrases that would make them explode)
    The early Fallout Games had that feature as well.

    You didn't understand that bit in RoTR, then. She wasn't the only one pointing a gun at someone; all of those trained mercenaries were pointing their guns at her whilst her and Constantin were talking. That's why she needed to find a different way out of the situation, and her gun-to-the-chest thing was a bluff to buy time. If she had have just shot him there and then? Then she would've been quickly killed by the many mercenaries pointing their guns at her, angry that she just killed their boss (and paycheck means) and rightfully not about to take and chances with someone who wouldn't think twice about killing them too. Her pretending to be all reasonable and going all like "look, you got me - honest voice now"? More buying time whilst she thought of and enacted that sleight of hand which actually ended up being pretty much her only option.
    So, no... not a short-lived crisis of conscience at all. A time-buying bluff for a strategic manoeuvre, in the midst of an otherwise-unwinnable situation.

      It's funny how "pissed" means angry for people who speak American. Over here it means "drunk" and it's quite hilarious whenever someone says "he'd be pissed" and it's all like "but he hasn't even touched a drop!" lol I can imagine her shooting him in the chest and he suddenly stumbles over with a big grin and says "I fuckin' love you Lara mate, you're my best mate you know that? Let's go jump sideways and kill some tigers" and Lara's all like "okay, okay, I think you've had enough now let's get you a taxi and go for a kebab or something" and he goes "ooh what kind of kebab" and she's like "I'm a posh burd, I have zebra or swan" and then he goes "let's get some hookers and make the place look crowded" and she's like "shit I would but Winston normally deals with that kinda thing and he needs to thaw out first" so he pushes her down a physics engine and she says "aaaaaah!".

      If you decide to become a superhero you are already bending the law to suit your own idea of morality and in doing so, how you handle villains is your responsibility. If you know that someone is without a doubt unable to be rehabilitated and will always get out of that rotating door called Arkham, it falls on you to do what must be done. Saying it isn't Batman's responsibility is like you seeing your neighbors house on fire and being like "Well I didn't start it so if it kills anybody it's not really my fault if I don't tell anyone". Except for that analogy to work, it'd have to be probably a few million houses considering Joker's kill count.

    I found a way to kill Caesar in Fallout: New Vegas very early, as soon as I got to his camp. Didn't affect the game much at all, the Legion still existed and the 2nd in charge just took over from Caesar. But for the rest of the game everyone was talking about Caesar's death and it got repetitive, because I was definitely supposed to do it later on, as revealed by a second playthrough.

Game logic), so maybe if she had the detonator she should've shot him? But then I'd wager they would just open fire anyway..

      Awsmedude Well they didn't shoot at first because he basically said not too as well as walked up to her.
      But she did steal the detonator and could have easily while she had that point blank range (her gun is in his chest) shot to shoot him, his body would be able to stop any relation for about 5 seconds more than long enough to duck into the tomb and press the button.

    Okay, I just want to point out something about the Makarov one: at the time, they didn't know that Makarov was a the ringleader. The last time they killed a bad guy, it turned out he had a protege waiting to take his place (Makarov, incidentally). The only link they had to Makarov's network was Makarov himself. If they killed him and it turned out he had a lieutenant, or was just a puppet, they would be back at square one. They had to get close to him to make sure that they could eliminate him and everyone connected to him. It isn't until later that they learn that he actually is both the head honcho, and the only guy holding his whole organization together.

    It doesn't matter how many times I play it, I still never forgive the Call of Duty story-line for NOT LETTING ME JUST KILL MAKAROV. Was the CIA worried about retaliation? Makarov and two of his highest ranking officers were right in the open. I mean, it's not like he even sent hired guns to do the dirty work... HE WAS RIGHT THERE. And he escaped a besieged airport in a van. IN A VAN. Did all of MOSCOW not have A SINGLE POLICE HELICOPTER AVAILABLE TO TAIL THE INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST THAT JUST SHOT UP AN AIRPORT? Did the CIA really only send one operative after Makarov? They didn't even have a contingency plan? And then, Russia, the country that can't successfully defend an airport against four guys, manages to invade almost every major U.N. Member in the world, including the U.S., England, and France. AT THE SAME TIME.
    Oh, and let's not mention the fact that an unregistered nuclear missiles was launched at Washington D.C. without any retaliation whatsoever, and without any apparent concern on the part of the Russian government that, oh, I don't know... SOMEONE JUST SNUCK INTO A NAVAL BASE AND LAUNCHED ONE OF OUR NUCLEAR MISSILES?!

      Actually, Rodrigo got the message and left Ezio and his family alone. He was smart enough to realize that trying to kill an Auditore or their close allies (especially Ezio) was equal to making an elaborate suicide plan.
      His son Cesare on the other hand, wanted to conquer Italy, and ignored his father's warnings that attacking Monteriggioni was a very, *very* bad idea. Heck, nearing the end of Brotherhood, *spoilers* Rodrigo tries to kill Cesare with a poisoned apple, but ends up being force-fed said apple himself.

    Yeah... I'd shoot a guy while 5 other soldiers have a clear shot on me. If Lara shot him she would be dead in a second. And Batman doesn't kill. But he wouldn't kill him if he let him fall...
    But if video games learned me anything... It's too finish someone the first chance you get.

    One thing I'll never understood about the Joker. Every time Batman brings him in alive there are dozens of cops and prison guards who have the opportunity to ensure that he falls down the stairs on the way to his cell however many times it takes to make damn certain that he's never getting up again. Not one of them ever wants revenge for one of the thousands of people he's murdered. Nor do any of them ever recognize the pattern that he always escapes and murders thousands of people and that they or someone they want to keep unmurdered could be one of them next time.
    Why is he still alive?

    I hate it whenever that happens, when you play the entire game just because someone couldn't do something right in the beginning. "You had one job ..." The plot has to make sense, you must play the rest of the game for a legitimate reason. If the protagonist was unable to stop the bad guy(s) for example, then it's only logical that you're playing the entire game just to right your wrongs and set things straight. Not if you've had plenty of chances to stop the bad guy in the beginning, and then fail to do so. Makes me play thinking "Now I've got to clean up your mess." That is never a good thought to play a game with.

    AC2 that part where you have to tail the Templars, listening to them discuss their evil plans of evilness, have every opportunity to take out their leader and several other members of the order at the same time, and _fail the mission_ for doing so, even though it would absolutely have prevented everything that goes wrong later.

    "No Russian" is a perfect example of a gigantic plot hole that was twisted into a device. Can't turn around to kill Makarov because he has plot armor so thick, he gets to kill you at the end and cause mayhem for the rest of the series. Just like all of the primary antagonists of the modern titles (Black Ops series and all of the "Warfare" titles). One more reason why I hate the modern era CoD games. Same story every year.
    Also, I have gripes about Scrotus surviving a chainsaw ripping through his frontal lobe like that. I have yet to see anyone live through such an ordeal, but hey, it's video games so plot armor saves the day again.

    To be fair with #1 Lara probably noticed that had she shot the guy then his goons would have killed her. And she only got the trigger for the explosives after he came closer to her in order to threaten her. Sooo...logically it made more sense to try and let him go, before using his trick against him when he showed signs of going to kill her anyways.

    To be fair, even when one manages to kill the main villain, some story-related shenanigans tend to happen that end up making said villain more powerful. Examples:
    Final Fantasy. You kill Garland at the very beginning...but then Chaos warps him back in time and fuses with him, creating a cycle that repeats every 2000 years in which Garland, after being defeated, kills the Warriors of Light and over the next two millennia loses his powers until the Warriors of Light, new to their adventure, can kill him, renewing the cycle.
    Fire Emblem: Athos inflicted a wound on Nergal that very well should have killed him. It did leave him permanently scarred so that he has to hide half of his face, but he survived thanks to the life force he absorbed. Also Eliwood's father stabbed him in the back.
    Fire Emblem: Awakening. You land a fatal blow on Validar, the guy responsible for causing the end of the world...but then the dragon destined to end the world revives him. Then, Gangrel crawls away from the battlefield where he died, Aversa lived on to find the truth of her past, and Walhart actually did die, but thanks to probably vegetarian powers proved so awesome that he kept living without his heart beating.
    Arkham series: Yeah, how well did killing the Joker work for Batman? Oh yeah, Joker's still in his head.

    I think Batman's code is more than just "don't kill" it's "don't let anyone die if at all possible." Batman knew it was possible for him to save Joker, so he did. That's also why he killed Bane then resuscitated him after Joker was free from the electric chair.

    • @kecukritiques2943
      @kecukritiques2943 8 лет назад +10

      Gordon Cowie "nobody in real life" - That's kinda where you've lost your argument.
      Also, the human body somehow surprises survivors of all sorts of accidents on a daily basis. In some cases, there have been survivors of incidents in which it's almost medically impossible to have survived. Such as Lareece Butler, who survived a 3,000 foot sheer drop, at accelerating speeds without a parachute; having only had a broken leg and concussion. Ask any medical professional and they'll tell you that sort of stuff is near unheard of in human endurance.

    • @gordonjamescowiest
      @gordonjamescowiest 8 лет назад +2

      Kecu considering the speed that the blade on a chainsaw moves at its statistically impossible for a person to survive a chainsaw going through their skull because it would hemorrhage their brain from the loss of blood. Also no medical professional has encountered a person surviving a chainsaw through the skull!

    • @kecukritiques2943
      @kecukritiques2943 8 лет назад +5

      Gordon Cowie
      You didn't question why your own statement made your entire argument, even your last point, irrelevant. We're talking about fiction. In real life, people have survived some brutally amazing feats of endurance. But fiction *always* trumps reality on such things for dramatic effect.
      Sooooo...your turn?
