SPECS 1987 Peterbilt 359 Classic It is a numbered truck, No. 45 of 359. It has a 3406B Cat, 15 Od eaton, 46k Rockwell rears 4.33, ratio full lockers.
This is a video I made of my brother going up a tough hill at the back of the NW Bay road near Devlin, On. He has on a split load of Poplar/Birch and is going to the OSB mill at Barwick, On.
He is about 70 000kg here, has chains on his rear axle and has the axles locked up. there were alot more trips where we had to chain up than when we didn't.
I was waiting at the bottom in my 2005 379X Авто/Мото
Lock the diff and pour the coals to it!
And chain up
Wow, that was ridiculous pulling power. Never missed a beat. Thanks for sharing.
sounds awesome!!!! love the way that 3406 sounds, amazing how it sounds like its gonna fall on its face then just sits down on that torque and keeps going.
01/12/2021 If it was not for trucks, GOD would not have made hills! I believe he loves the sound of pulling a grade, I do!
THUNDERTRUCK!!!!
YEAH YEAH YEAH THUNDERTRUCK!!!!
lol, I wish we had snow already ;) This was filmed in February.
many times we didn't make it up the hill - even with the chains, so the skidder would have to thunder out to push us up. there was also another hill about 2 miles past this one that was even worse.
The joys of trucking.
Listening to that engine roar while pulling a load up the hill. Sound like a bull dozer pushing dirt and rock. The sound is prefect on that Pete.
Nothing more exciting then log hauling
It’s a Beautiful thing 🚛🤙👍🚛
Damn, that Pete can PULL! Part way up the weight starts to get to it and it just buckles down and does it right. Beautiful and that Cat sounds great.
You know... Here's a fact. CATs are the lazy man's engine around here, where your able to lug them down to 500 rpm with nothing bad happening, but they pull like a husky and a dogsled. The cummins you got to shift all the time, since you can't lug them down, but they are capable to go up hills faster than a cat. To tell the difference between a Cat and a cummins is by on the big hills if it smokes(CAT) or not(cummins). Also the cummins will out pull a cat speedwise at 70000 kg. But cats can be beaten on and they still work. My grandpa has a 1994 kenworth, and it has a 415 cat in it, pulling the same loads, bigger sometimes, and it could keep up with the 500 hp trucks(which at the time in the company there were brand new 2005 international Paystar 5000i with both a cat and a cummins).
+CowSausages Which one smokes on the hill, Cat or Cummings?
deltavee2 The Kitty Kat of course. Everything will smoke, but the Cat is the biggest smoker... I guess 50 years of smoking caught up to them...
What's a "Cummings"? is it like a Cummins? lol>
But seriously, the old Cummins will smoke but not like the old Caterpillar stoves. AND the Cat will do better on emissions tests; go figure.
Just took a run at it without checking. Hrrrm, too much porn, I guess XD
Really really cool. In the beginning i thought thats hes not gonna make it, but hell yeah, he did!
Nice shot!
Hey Peterbilt should pay you guys to advertise. good Job. Keep those wheels turning and make that money....Be Safe......
01/12/2021 That is a day's work! Don
Thanks for the reply, makes a lot of sense and definitely looks like a much more stable load.
Lovely work... nice video, thanks....
that look like a place I used to hunt when I was a kid in Iron River Mi
James Campbell asked why trailer axles were up with a full load. They do that to get more load on the drive axles so that the truck has more traction. Once he gets on the main road he'll put the other axles down.
More wight on drive axes.
Jkooi o
That's a pretty good climb by himself, you could see the tires chains digging
Adriaan Verburg Thx for the explanation!
Wow,great Peterbilt !!!
And WOW!! This IS heavy!!
Working with family, you're a lucky guy.
That's a life time supply of toothpicks lol
That's a good climb out of there.
anger management? lol! I didn't mean to come across as angry, in fact, your last " insult" actually made me laugh.don't worry, all that new stuff hasbeen tried out here and every time it has failed. I have be around trucks for all of my 27 years, I hauled my first load of logs on my own when I was 13 and bought my first truck 6 years later. Ive done long distance highway haul and logging, so I've seen quite a bit although admittedy not everything
thanks for stopping by sunshine, it was fun.
What an nice engine!
love the videos buddy. keep up the good work :). i deer hunt out that way, lots of nice country out there
God you guys in Fort have snow early this year. I can remember a few landings like that up on the English River rd, he'll can even remember getting the skidder to push the trucks up the hill
Is that supposed to be an insult? that Ican fix my own problems And shift like a big boy?
Darn right I'm happy to shift on my own. I can see the terrain ahead and know that sometimes I need to retain high RPM's in a lower gear as opposed to shifting up and of losing my momentum by shifting up right at the bottom of a hill.
Diagnostics programs are just that, diagnostics. they dont actually fix anything. they might tell you that there is something broken, but they don't fix it. Wrenches do that
Many thanks for your detailed answer.
jamesie.
piterbilt never retire !!!
Nice video
both diffs locked and inter-axle lock is on. up here we call that 4-way lock.
Torque monster.
No, I meant 70 000kg. I checked with my brother the other day an it was actually "only" 68 000kg.
US highway drivers would be amazed by the weight the trucks scale out at hauling wood
Nice load
3406B Cat, 15 Od eaton, 52k Rockwell rears 4.33, ratio full lockers.
This has now been added to the description. Hope you like the vid!
yes sir.
Nice truck
no problem buddy!
Id struggle to walk up that hill!
Nice truck and ny dad used to have 379
that is a strong truck
I just watched it fives times...
they do it up here in central bc, 8 hr trip to the log site, 8hr trip back to the mill
BIG POWER
As for sleepers some do depends on the haul we can be 3-4 hours away and many guys stayed in the truck for the week getting in as menu loads as they could
these logs are going to be chipped and turned into OSB and plywood. we hauld them this way beacause it is safer (the load will usually fall off before the would glip over) and it is more efficent- we can use a 48 foot trailer and have no overhang. Treelength is usually for saw mills
glad you got the Stats,.,.,., great video get us some more ,,,.,-=-=-=blessings
depends on what you need, here concrete mixers can haul for 400 pluss km one way, and nearly all dump trucks have long cabs:)
"Candy Assed" was on reference to American spec. we rin proper suspensions and heavy, full-locking diffs and slow gearing.
Here in Canada a 3 axle truck+3 axle trailer is allowed 46 500kg, if he is pulling a set of b-trains he is good for 63 500. On Highway, anywhete in Canada. here in Ontario our axle spacings and axle ratings allong with winter weight allowances give us another several tonne.
high tech doesn't work out here. this truck has a mechanical engine- that means no electronics at all, and is much more reliable than my emmissions engine, or any modern engine for that matter. it doesn't get crippled want to stick bumps up and hits a sensor, it doesn't have wiring issues, it doesn't have all that crap that can go wrong with electronic,
it just works, and works hard. only a highway driver thinks you need 500+hp to haul 44 tonne, my dad hauled over 80t with his 350hp Cat in '86
got your back, come on.
nice
Trailer chassis just twisting and turning
In the bush, it teh air lift axles are donw, it is too stressful on them and it takes traction away from the drive axles. also, it makes it hard to steer b/c these are not steering axles. Self steering lift axles just do not work in the bush, just like disc brakes, 40k rears and other highway-friendly devices.
It will not damage the trailer unless the driver is really trying to do so. We only use the lifts on the highway.
One set of singles? I remember very well putting tire chains on in the oil patch! Worst case two sets of triples on the drivers, one on one steering axle, and one set of triples on the trailer. The good old days! Good times!
The engine sound make me think about the Petebilt 281, from the movie Duel.
Really nice!
it is always cheaper to cut to length in teh woods, that wood would have likely been cut with a harvester.. full tree is old fashion ... but so is hauling cross deck... most guys around here haul shotgun, because they haul a variety of wood (tree length, 12-16' logs) and can get the 8-10' pulp and stud on without changing stakes!
If you're hauling crossdeck, you can get some mightly loads on though!! need a good loader man or load liners to do it.
he has about 20-22 cord on here, weight factor is about 2100.
Great video, could have done with more, however! Why is there an axle lifted with a full load?
Awesome sound!
How much volume meassures the load? Curious because swedish Birch is a light weight wood.
/Love US trucks
Here in northwestern Ontario we weigh by kilogram, not volume.
Tell you what. Try picking up. One
.
@@CowSausages whats your total weight with this axle setup?
thats fucking awesome man
Man that trailer was all wheels...
and now it's your turn to climb .
Nope, North of Devlin, On.
were are you hauling out of looks like newfoundland? am i right?
That's awesome man! What's that, about 5.5 maybe 6 chords of 7 and a half ft. hardwood,9200lbs per chord?I'm just thinking about what I used to haul in the Adirondacks of N.Y.for Georgia Pacific Paper Mill in Plattsburgh,N.Y.back in the 70's.We used to put 4 chords of 7.5 ft of rock maple, beech on a tri-axle (air tag axle)International Loadstar Model 1800 with a 392C.I.D.gas engine with a 5 speed!
like a man
what makes you say that mr expert?
Motor sounds mean. But the driver sounded very comfortable with that truck.
I have never hauled any timber and that is the first time I have ever scene logs being cut short and stacked sideways as opposed to lengthwise and full tree length what is the reason for that?
Not sure in his weight but we pulled up to 140000 in my area which was about 2 hours north of here
Chris I will back up what JR says. I hauled logs north of where he does. What he has stated is true
I have seen US trucks that knew they didn't have to pass a scale loaded to 125,000 lb with pulpwood. Mind you that these are not the Canadian style trucks that run with 250,000, but trucks that are designed for 80,000 lb gross weight
Where/how do you start to look for logging truck companies that may be hiring?
And I do know about those crappy PACCAR engines. 12 and 13L engines can't hack it out here. all of the new trucks have more down time than the old trucks-substantially.
I spec'd out a new truck at Christmas, but between the poor fuel economy and low reliability (thanks to the WONDERFUL emissions controls) the astronomically high prices and the fact that interiors in every brand are so cheaply made I decided to spend that money rebuilding my 600 hp C-15 Cat in my truck-check out my other vids.
about 70 000kg
I agree. A 40,000 lb load of oak looks empty compared to this load.
locked diff and low gear, right?
Amend my query to ask about 2 axles lifted!!!
how is he getting traction?
Why the sleeper cab on a logger? Surely it's going to the local mill. Never herd of long haul logging...
Weight, chains, and 8 tires clawing at the ground.
This poor Pete doesn't deserve to be beaten on like this!! It should be all polished up and a road truck!!! Use a 379 to have the frame all twisted and what not.
My dad had a 1987 359, but it wasn't a numbered classic. :( he sold it in 2004 to better our family and switch to a company driver. I was 11. If he kept it a promise I would've got my license and learned to drive. He let me drive it the day before he sold it!! I was 11 years old driving a 359 around the parking lot!! He just sat there and said you know what to do, released the parking brakes, put it in 2nd and let the clutch out. Shifted to 3rd and cruised around. Alway remember that day.
That Is Not Beating... That's Putting a Peterbilt through her paces, there is nothing that was done here that couldn't be done a thousand times over. You act as though its a plastic Cascadia. What you are seeing here is the kind of thing that won Peterbilt their fame.. as The old Peterbilt ads use to say "DON'T BABY IT... Thoroughbreds need exercise"
actually I do agree with cheeseballs, Peterbilts should be on the road. Last one I had the (double)frame broke in half 6 months after buying it and flipped into the ditch.
sure it does remember it is built for hard use. by design
how much do they weigh?
Thats definitely more than 70,000 lbs man.
на колесах цепи!!!
I tell them, and most of the time they don't beleive me. They figure the trailer would break in half...
you cant beat a rockwell back end
😲
all you have to do is live around here, have a commercial truck license, and be a little bit crazy.
esa es una gran colina ? en mi pais le podemos enseñar que es una gran colina
That's a tough pull. Looks like 2nd gear on the rug. My opinion would not have made it to the hump at the first 100 feet w/o the chains where the engine pulled down at 15 seconds. I done pulls like that up dog river and shelby road west thunder bay and up 45 road going towards Armstrong. W/Star 525 cat treelength. Chains are p.i.arse but work deadly.
Although i would say he's 61,000 kg. Peckerpoles sideways like that I doubt ever more than 63,000 and that's pushing it with level load. That load is tapered so I bet 61,000.
haha...I haul treelength w/nolta to be legal with 66,000kg. Can't cross a scale even at mill w/overload in the last 15 years because company scales rat on you. So if you do arrive overload, then you gotta put the steering wheel off the scale somehow to make the scale come in legal. That truck might be legal for 61,500 if the tractor is long enuf. At bowater in TBay we call that "step on the grate" where you can pull the D.S. front steering tire onto the catwalk and come in bang-on the nose.
Anyway - good pull ! ! ! :)
Dynamo Joe they switched it there so if you drive on the catwalk you have to get pulled off the scale. Oh, and it can weigh up to 69500 kg with the right spacing on the axles. And also, smaller wood length always weighs more in the same volume area as tree length. You can barely get 66000 kg in treelength, when out in Terrace bay at the pulp mill, they are grossing 90000 kg
No, that was what he weighed, You can easily get over 70 tonne gross hauling sideways.
JRtransport379 I've seen trailers at AV terrace bay where they can't lift up the airlifts because the trailer will break in half.
ok its 68 metric tonnes and it lugs up the hill -no down change on the Fuller/Eaton bless lol lol
whats the name of your brother truck job because i want to work for that job.
plz answer my comment by the way i subcribed
I'm assuming does that Pete have a 15 or 18 speed?
When this was filmed it had a 15, now it has an 18
really thought a downchange was coming , but boy it can "lug'
God forbid you break a driveline
how much does the total rig and load weigh?
over 130 000lbs
fuck it sucks CAt is not making engines anymore, those worked some good
Kevin Rogers you special order a truck without an engine and have a new cat put it in but you cant get them from the factory new with cats
