Hi Garth, thanks so much for this video and your review - it was exactly to the same conclusion I came to recently! I've been watching tiny homes/off grid living/container conversions for the past 10+ years and was dreaming of converting a shipping container or two into a living space. First of all I found it challenging to find reputable companies in South Africa who seemed like they knew what they were doing and whose footage on their websites does not consist of a handful of conversions just shown over and over again from different angles. Secondly, I was SHOCKED at the prices - for a one bedroom/one bathroom container conversion you're looking at R600 000+! I agree with you, then I'll rather buy some property and build something over time. But not everyone has time and as you rightly stated, people who are interested in living in a tiny home, does have financial constraints and definitely cannot afford the price tags that goes with it! Sure, building material/labour is expensive but I think the hype about Tiny home living has also caused the inflation of these exuberant price tags. Thirdly, I don't want everything they offer and it doesn't seem that you have too much of a choice there...I want the container insulated, fitted with windows and doors of my choice, electricity/water equipped and then I will do the rest over time as money allows... I've subscribed to your channel for more info from someone living the dream and obviously know what it's all about. Thanks!

I can also strongly recommend Life Uncontained. He firstly built a family home out of containers, but more recently is busy converting a 18m container to a family home. You can see the framing, insulation, cutting of windows and doors, etc. Plus they are a very nice couple to watch.

    Great video Garth, thanks.
In today's climate I seriously doubt one can build anything like you have for R150K, unless you are using a huge amount of reclaimed material just knocked together.
The comparison between your build & what's available on a website is also not a realistic comparison, the website units are built to a far higher standard (which is expensive I'm afraid). Those prices are probably market related, expensive, but market related none the less.
    Great channel, keep 'em coming!

But should it become close to the cost of a large house?

What is your take on a precast walling house? Is it something to consider living on a plot?

great video just subbed, i plan on moving to South Africa or Kenya once i save around 15 to 20k USD so i can buy land for around 2 to 4k USD than i'll buy 2 quick splicing prefab houses on aliexpress for total of 4k USD than have them finish and remodeled the way i would like for hopefully around 2k USD n finally solar installment which i'm still researching the cost but i can definitely pull it off with 15 to 20k USD because the US dollar is very strong in South Africa n Kenya n would be equivalent to around 2,517,800.00 KSH or 360,957.40 Rand.

Thank you for this. I have come to the same conclusion. If your tiny house expenses become comparable to a brick and mortar large family home and yard, it defeats the object. I really wish for a tiny house community somewhere to provide some security

Ok, I can really live this way as much of my time is already spent in my organic garden but the problem is where does one park these tiny homes.? Who is willing to put people on their property. In addition for me, going to farm is dangerous. You don't need to say why. It makes for negative vibes.

There is alot of land I feel if a person or persons has a solid proposal and has a history of being resposible there is a way. I live on a farm , keys live in the door only dangerous thing around are puff adders , night adders and baboons. Good luck on finding your tiny home experience
