The Tiny House That Breaks All The Rules

- This tiny house breaks all the rules in the most brilliant ways. Absolutely filled with tiny house taboos, this home is nothing short of spectacular.
Designed by owners Samara and James in collaboration with Samara’s father, famed house designer Frank Macchia, this home is an absolute masterpiece.
It’s separated into three different units, a bathroom, kitchen-dining and bedroom each with a modicum of separation which provides connection to the outdoors.
All zones of the home are connected with a living ritual, be it that of cooking, eating, sleeping or washing. Every space is intentional and well thought out.
When visiting this home, the word that came to mind to describe it was elemental. Solid, earthy materials are used in both the homes construction and the surrounding landscaping which help to further connect the house to the earth which surrounds it.
Beyond the tiny house itself, Samara and James live on a property together with extended family, bringing together the best elements of multigenerational living and showing why this is a concept that should no longer be shunned by the west.

I’ve fallen in love with this home. It’s taught me a lot about intentional design and the beauty in breaking the rules. I hope you find as much value in this tiny house tour as I did.

This tiny house breaks all convention and the result is simply awesome. Samara and James are building the most beautiful lives for themselves. They have constructed a home which enables them to live intentionally and thanks to its small size, the tiny house has created space for them to be able to build their business and grow in the world. Again, the connection to family in this home is also really special. Not all are blessed with close families but for those that are, I would love to see multigenerational living more normalised in the west. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this home. Thanks for watching. With Love, Bryce & Rasa
Could you do a video with ppl who design and make tiny homes? I work as a draughtswoman and your videos are so inspiring! Love drawing tiny homes just as a hobby for myself. I would love to some day make it my job.
Actually me and my family are working on it right now. We need a proper design for the grandkids, grandparents and adult siblings living together under one roof so to to speak. I'm an architect enthusiast with mechanical engineering background, my wife has an uncle who builds decks as his business and we have a good few selection of friends that want to help with building it also counting a house framer apprentice who is one of our closest friends and wants to live close to us more than likely joining us in our little village we're trying to build. Fingers crossed to see if we can get a plan confirmed and stamped hopefully built by the end of this coming year.
I don’t have a family of origin that would make this a realistic idea for me but with my own child and my family of choice it would be so wonderful to have multigenerational living.
What a beautiful young couple, and their home is beautiful, as is living close to family. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful an Amazing home..Design like No other.....Huge WOW Factor 🌿💕🌻💕🌿
I have noticed that a lot of people who watch tiny house tours comment on how the people live on their parent's property, as if there is something wrong with that. I think there is something very right about that and that as a society, we need to go back to the common sense of living in community with our loved ones in order to be there for each other. Both me and my husband each have our own tiny houses and I would love nothing more than if my son and his girlfriend moved onto my property as well as my daughter, her husband and my two grandchildren. I would be thrilled if that happened.
Intergenerational living just makes sense because that's what we're designed for. The concept of separation is pushed to create more debtors, we're living in the dark ages, Family is everything. You're already halfway there with land and your own tinies, really hope your dream comes true. ☮️💜
We have our granny flat on my parents property and mum organised and built it to attract us. I’m glad she did that as we help each other. My 5 year old daughter gets to have her grandmother around and we make each other life better. Our little tribe and I love it.
It's not so much that people think there's something wrong with parents helping their kids out, it's more that not everybody has this option, and so there is resentment and envy. Of course, it's great to see that some parents _do_ care; we shouldn't be angry or hateful towards them for this. I applaud them! If only more people could work together this cooperatively. We'd have a much better world, for sure. But for those of us who know we'll never have the option of family being a supportive safety net it can be hard to not feel a little resentful or envious of those who seem to have it all. The ever present threat of homelessness- coupled with strained/ toxic family dynamics can do awful things to one's morale.
“Both my husband and I.”Grammar actually is important. Your insight & opinions are important. Grammar allows, encourages & informs your thoughts & ideas. Sent w/intent & encouragement
In many parts of the world (particularly amongst minorities) living on the same property or even the same house as your parents, grandparents etc is commonplace, it’s more of a western ideology that you need to “leave the nest” and prove yourself in order to show you are a successful person.
I hope you get your wish & enjoy decades of living a familial commune life.
A designer for 35 years and this one works for me. Thanks to the owners and for publishing it here.
Yes smart father! I have been pushing for something like this with my family for 10 years now and just slowly convincing them that you don't need properties all over the world we can all live together and not step on each other and have our own little community and support each other and they're going to come around because things are just getting more expensive world wide😊
Absolutely. My family all came together in lockdown and the benefits have been innumerable. There's a lot to be said for coming together, sharing resources and moving forward together as a strong unit. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a strong and healthy family dynamic, I understand that, but for those that do, it's a great option.
That only works if you all can get along
@@dianep3071 😂Very true.
I would totally live on my parents property except they live in upstate NY - where it snows.
Interesting to watch this as this is how african homesteads are structured
I love it. Finally someone goes dark side with a tiny home. There are so many that are really cool but all the white and everything I just hate that. I really just adore this. It is beautiful.
It is way too dark for me but the gardens are lovely and design/construction of the 3 separate spaces is also terrific.
Agree! I enjoy moody corners in my home but this is verging on depressing.
yes too much dark....
Yes....Not for me either.
I don't care for it personally. I'd go into deep depression.
Reminds me of a prison or a morgue.
I love the dark colour and natural materials used. Its really refreshing.
As much as I generally like the all white, neutral and natural wood kind of tones, it’s refreshing to see something different…natural and cozy. The outdoor garden is also on point
Reminds me of a Nordic stave church. Not my taste, but interesting to see.
I think this dark colour theme works well in a bathroom/spa or bedroom area, and maybe in houses with larger rooms. I'm not convinced it's the way to go throughout an entire house though, especially paired with so few windows and such a small footprint. It certainly looks striking, but I would end up feeling very tired and sad spending all day in rooms this dark.
Agree with every word. I just find it to be gloomy and pretentious, like something out of a design magazine where, at least, you could make it go away with the turn of a page.
Completely disagree. Love it.
The father is brilliant. He built a stylish and functional home. The landscaping is just incredible.
This is a stunningly beautiful tiny home and I respect their need for darkness, but for me it would feel oppressive and depressing to an extent. Darkness at night definitely is conducive to better sleep, but the psyche needs light during the day and lighter colors and more natural light help one’s mood a great deal. I love the layout with the separate areas and the bathroom is so cool. A very unique design overall. Also multi-generational living is great for mutual support. They’ll benefit even more when they have children by having family nearby. 💗🙏🏻🏡
I'm sure it gets in brighter in that home. It's unfortunate the weather was so overcast on the day of the shoot. 🌫️
I love this idea of a family homestead with a tiny home for each of the branches of the family tree. Plus I'm a sucker for an outdoor shower lol.
Being someone who loves lots of light, for some reason this home is so peaceful, like a retreat. I love it. I would never have imagined how peaceful this feels, just as an observer. I love everything about it.
Yes! Living with family is everything. Many cultures thrive with their extended families around them.
I like the design of the home. The darkness inside and outside is overwhelming for me. Since my family is half Finnish the elements of bright colors have been utilized to bring light inside during periods of darkness. On the other hand I do understand wanting to employ darkness as a warm blanket wrapped around you in a hug.
Yeah I definitely understand this. Being in this home though, it wasn't depressing at all. It's almost like the dark colours make the home disappear in a way, and highlight the elements both inside and out. You are drawn more to the windows, the outdoors, the plants. And in this tropical climate where indoor / outdoor living makes a lot of sense, there's little need to escape the outdoors. I can certainly understand why in a country where it's dark and cold for much of the year you'd want to brighten the space though.
I love the concepts but the space feels like a place for a silent retreat.
Love black but the amount of dark feels heavy…like a person would tire of this after a while. The garden provides a beautiful contrast to the interior. It is one of the most beautiful ones you have ever featured. They are an incredibly creative family.
@@livingbig I understand and adore the concept of the darkness emphasizing the windows and plants as art, but I would find a way of adding a bit of daylight, probably by way of skylight, at least in the kitchen. Stunning design overall and the landscaping is to die for!
Interesting, but way too much black for me
even their coffee is black :)
love this house -- it's nice to see fresh design perspectives and new materials!
I like my house like I like my coffee…BLACK!
It's rare to find a home that's so sleek, dark and modern, yet also warm and cozy. Props to them for making it work.
"Elemental" is a good description for this home... feels warm, simple, rugged, homey. Lighting is actually quite adequate. All it needs is a sitting space and a woodstove, for my personal tastes.
I typically don't like dark features, colors and fixtures, but something about this tiny home intrigued me. Very cave-like. Relaxing, and zen. Fantastic job.
Exactly. Also remember, there's a huge amount of light and sun in Byron Bay, and it would be refreshing to go inside to muted light and coolness. We have a ground floor room in our stone town house which is naturally dark, so we emphasized that by a dark ceiling, a shade lighter walls, Persian type rugs and timber furniture and appropriate lighting to make what you call a cave-like room. It's great for reading and listening to music.
I really like like they talk about the space. They seems really love it. To me it's too cold and dark. I can't imagine not having any colorful decorations and paintings on the walls, but It's nice to see how different taste people have :)
I'm a huge fan of the landscaping. All the green pops against the home's black walls. It's a beautiful result inside and outside.
Evolved and so young. What a cool couple living there in true minimalism having tea ceremonies and meditating in such a natural setting. Love how the green pops against the black and the little pop-out shutters to allow light and air but keep the privacy. I love this place! This whole family has a very unique situation I think most parents of adult children would love having their kids all around them and at some point, the parents will be surrounded by grandchildren as well. Excellent all around!
I'm gonna steal that idea for the concrete-industrial look on the walls. I wouldn't have thought it would go so well, but it really adds a sense of permanence, solidity. I like it a lot.
Is t it just one of the most tranquil, meditative escapes from the harsh realities of day to day life and what a beautiful couple with a unconditionally supportive family to share their journey as a community. It’s a dream, a paradise and they made it happen! WOW!
Not having a living space doesn’t work for me. I like the modular style and their aesthetic is very clear and obviously suits them. I really like the idea of the family living together, but separate…
Only 4 minutes in and I don't know if I am more amazed at the design or the fact that the family all wants to be on the same property. Both would be treasures.
Of all of the tiny homes I have seen this one seems to be the one that most authentically manifests the psyche of the people dwelling within it. Frank Macchia is definitely going on my short list of people to consult. I personally would prefer a more modulated tonality, still with the wabi sabi aesthetic, but with a traditional Japanese-Hispanic crossover feel to it where the dark stillness is formed by shadow and so is more dynamic. It would have been interesting to see a timelapse of Samara and James' home to get a feel for how dynamic the lighting is anyway, perhaps it is in the shifting highlights and reflections more than the changing tones of surfaces.
Very interesting take! I actually hadn't thought about the shadow aspects...
I love the design of the home but the darkness is too much for my taste. As long as the owners are happy with it that is what matters❤
Lovely house and family dwelling! Too dark for my depressing moods! Great Father!
I LOVE the idea of the ritual of rooms. We need more of that as human beings!
This home is absolutely stunning. The dark tones & minimal objects help to create a beautiful sense of calm & tranquility. Clearly they are a couple who value connection with each other, family & nature & I think that is a beautiful thing. Congratulations Samara & James & thanks Bryce & Rasa for another amazing tiny ❤

I agree with you. Everyone seems to be knocking the colour scheme, but I think it’s tranquil as well... Also they are not showing it on a sunny day, but I guess that would be magnificent...
I think it would be extremely depressive to live in a space like that, but each to their own and whatever makes them happy 🙂
Whats the good in having a huge empty house? I'd hate having a big house where it's just me and the nucleic family. Everything you need is right there, and not a 5 minute walk to the 100 square foot cold, stone bathroom. Like you said, to each their own, but the alternative to a small cozy house to me, is a big echoey cold home that's expensive to maintain and keep running with bills and utility. Big houses are more trouble than they're worth. It's like wanting a Bugatti for a daily driver. After a while, you'll hate what you once worked to get and enjoy.
@@austindevejian4044 They're probably talking about the dark interior being depressing, rather than the tiny home size itself.
@@user-du5hi1bd8t fair, fair. I cant disagree with that point, however I cant help but feele that the color us arbitrary. Maybe the dark colors make it feel even smaller than it is?
@@austindevejian4044 Dark colours do make things feel smaller psychologically, but this couple seems to enjoy that coziness. But it's not for everyone, for others it might feel claustrophobic, and also the darkness itself might feel depressing too.
Not my cup of tea, this darkness, but if this couple like and enjoy their home that is all that matters. I love this show.
It’s wonderful that they can harmoniously live along side their family members like this. Honestly, even families that get on well can’t necessarily live so close together not to mention families that are unfortunately discordant. Their home is lovely also.
Brilliant concept! Love her Father's idea. 🙏💜✌to this Tiny House Family!!! And Blessings to Dad's love too!
Absolutely stunning !!
I agree with the husband having all that greenery makes it more better. The landscape is gorgeous.
Not having a living space in this tiny is not bad at all. It dark and beautiful.
Good job guys.
I myself wouldn't be able to live in such q dark house. Despite that, I cannot stop admiring these esthetics! What a home!
Okay, I DO love their aesthetic. Love the black exterior, those faux ( I guess) concrete walls, OMG, but lord, the bed is really jammed in there. How do they change the sheets?
This home tops my list of best tiny house designs and inspiration! I absolutely love the Zen like simplicity and how they’ve pared things down to the essentials. Sharing land and keeping family close is as elemental as the materials used. Dad has it figured out and the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. Such a thoughtful and grounded couple, I wish them all the best.
With the concrete looking walls it reminds me with the hatch in Lost 😂
Im blown away by this. The colour/design is right up my street. Black is my favorite colour and boy does it make this look amazing. Absolutely love it.
I love most of the homes you feature, Bryce. This one I found very dark and depressing and could not live in it. Maybe if it had a different color scheme I could do it. Somehow this one is like being in a coffin. I need light and windows.
I do like the separation into connected pods. The design is very innovative.
I was not aware of any contests....
I agree. It reminds me of the Holocaust museum I visited in Berlin.
@@AndrewSpencer2 Yikes!
I found everything superficial, artificial, and pretentious, including the couple. They're simply trying too hard here and it didn't work for me but I suppose chacun à son goût...
One tiny house I actually disliked a lot. Depressing is the first impression I got. Humans need light for mental health.
It was interesting to see but nothing about it was something I would enjoy. After years of watching the homes on this channel it's the first time my reaction has been like hell no.
Same
I felt the same way.
@@nasrataj8265 I always have been able to find something positive to say & this time there wasn't anything I could come up with. ⬛️◼️◾️
@@bonniepwtf same here. I even felt that the emphasis on the expressions like "I ", "my dad" my family" and "my family land" were a little too much. So were is the expression " my partner ", both of us" or " we"???? which is more important in a relationship.
On a different note I liked the greenery against the stark, forbodding black walls could be taken as a slight reminder of being on the planet earth.
With that said i wish the couple and "her" family happiness if it can be found in such "dark" place.
Absolutely not for me either…..so depressing in that black and concrete style…..does not feel homey at all……sorry!
Now I want a dark tiny home... I feel like skylights is what the place needs. I like all the dark colors. But it does need some more natural light so it doesn't feel so depressing. This is gorgeous. And zen. And just so peaceful. Feels cozy, I want something like this one day! Just more natural light. The dark colors are perfect tho!
This shows that dark is an option too, and many like that. I do! So many different people, and so many different ways to do things! Thank you Bryce for yet another eye-opening tour through a tiny house!!!
It's great that they have home of their dreams For me - between the smallness and darkness it would be a cave and I'd have trouble relaxing and breathing. Different strokes for different folks
It appears that her dad was heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Style of Architecture. Anybody who has ever been inside of a Prairie Style home will recognize that style in this tiny house.
I thought it looked familiar. Not that but more during the industrial period in someone's kitchen
I was raised in a house designed by my folks and Herb Fritz a draftsman for Mr Wright who set up shop right near Taliesen! So I was raised in the “natural house” Mr. Wright first devised the Prairie House! Every room in our house had windows and we were living in the woods! Mother had to finish the kitchen every meal and before bed or she
Never knew what critter would be lurking on her counter! It was a house full of life and political talk as was appropriate to dads profession of professor of journalism! The dark would have struck a worried not with Mr Wright’s Fans it was impossible to put think Frank! See Gemini!
There is something which first felt physically stiffling,
then mentally and emotionally stiffling...
This is the first tiny house that gave me that feeling before even going inside. 😞
Good for them to have a family that is supportive to their lifestyle. It's a beautiful home!
Simply gorgeous, especially the neon green of the landscaping against the dark exterior.
As someone who loves white and bright, I love this! I could easily live in there, especially because the outdoors with light is so close at hand. Beautifully done!
That kitchen is stunning! And I love the symmetrical asymmetry of all the walls and openings, it makes the space seem huge! It is so good to see a design which feels like natural ingredients instead of white and plastic everywhere.
This home is a reflection of who you are. Go for what you want. Do what makes you happy. I don't like the smell of food in the house. So it's a good idea to separate the kitchen.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us
Gorgeous the plant life around the property is so inviting and calming. On a personal note I wouldn't go that dark but love the concept.
Same. I do like the way the green of the plants really stands out against the dark background though. On the outside I mean.
Someday hope to have a tiny home similar to this - love the dark approach without it feeling gloomy. Greenery is huge. Thanks for presenting and thanks to Samara/James for sharing.
I think Samara over spoke James the entire video. 📹 🤔 😆
Our big house is dark, (lack of windows) plants don't do well, & I'm always wishing for more light!!
The tiny is chic and very elegant in its design. It’s styled so well. Adopted so many of new elements of minimalism. The interiors of the space looks like a house and not tiny which is hard to achieve. Such a great space
Beautiful.
A side note: I hope someday to see affordable tiny homes designed for physical disabilities or retrofitted for them.
Stunning lawn. Nice to be surrounded by family.
I really enjoyed this house. The kitchen was by far my favorite. A few downsides for me would be clothing storage and the bedroom would be tough to work with, although I do love that it gets black out dark for sleeping. That cement board really made the whole thing come together for me. I like the landscaping, and they are super lucky to have her father making this come to life for them.

Very beautiful cozy build. What I like especially about this, is how the plants seem to glow against all that black, they're like the stars of the show! Amazing, love it.
gorgeous. even the clothes hanging in the closet matched the palette.
The dark is totally unconventional, but it works, I love the bedroom and the concept of darkness and closeness, it mimics a womb environment, such tranquility and peacefulness! At first I was sceptic, but the design and darkness won me over. Thank you Bryce!!
OMGosh she wears the pants. She doesn't stop talking. Give the bloke a chance.
Having an external shower is a really bad idea, especially for any weather that isn't warm and pleasant.
Not to mention that you can't dry off afterwards if it's raining outside. At least, you can't dry off until you go back inside. Which means you've forced additional steps into your shower routine for no benefit at all.
I got this gush of warmth when you first stepped into the house, so serene 😌 just beautiful!!♥️
I love this house. I also love the idea of the family together as a community. All in their own space but sharing at the same time. Wonderful idea.
I really like black, most of my clothes are black, but this is just too deppressingly dark.
Exterior and landscape stunning. Interior is visually appealing but to live in feels like trapped in a cave. Without parent’s big house a step away to go to, I think I would go crazy. Can’t imagine how encapsulated it was prior to adding windows afterwards. I wonder about moisture, mold, and insects with the openings such as bathroom and shutters.
They never talked about heating either
Ooooh seems like a prison....not a fan of the concrete look....or the dark dark walls
Really love the space between the bedroom an kitchen. a simple separation of zones.
This is my favourite one by far! It is so me! I love dark earthy tones that help you feel cozy. Stunning.
An earth brown colour is more relaxing, natural. Light and cosy
I really love this home....and it's parts are all movable...Samara mentioned when they get more land they would like a living space....the outside is gorgeous 😍....being all black and the concrete breaks up the color was very smart...they are lucky they live on their families land for laundry and use of a bigger kitchen when need be....in her parents home that huge round dinner table 💙 ❤️ is awesome...God Bless
I love the dark, and it's good to see this version of tiny! Something for everybody!!!
For me, this is an excellent example of to each his own, writ quite large. For these folks the house is a joy and success. That’s one of the terrific features of the program that keeps me coming back for more. I personally can’t imagine being in such a space on purpose, but our house wouldn’t suit these fascinating folks one whit.
You could film a sequel to THX1138 with the guy in that home. Don’t hate it, is just does look like they went for a “bauhaus / dystopia” look.
I hope they remember to take in some sunshine or other antidepressant.
It's lovely that they are all living together on the same property. Once they have children that will be a great support system. This is the first tiny house I have seen without a separate living area. Lovely but I'm not too fond of the dark colours with this one, the gardens are really lovely. Would have liked to have seen the parents home as well :)
The garden is gorgeous but I can't believe no one has mentioned how much heat a building like this will absorb in a northern NSW summer! Ouch.
i think this is my favorite house shown so far on this channel.
It reminds me of brutalist design. I really like the walls in the kitchen and the cocoon feeling of the bedroom. The juxtaposition of the dark exterior with the bright green plants is just amazing as well.
I would be interested to see a tour of the parents house, I love the dark thematic
I love this channel and I love the unique people this show highlights. I love color, so the inside of this home just made me feel so sad I had to turn it off, but to each their own. Glad this channel and content exist!
Very unique, I felt an instant calm when they walked into the kitchen.
I always thought it’d be great to have the whole family on the same plot as well. Like the way people used to. Love the idea, but in my family we can’t stand each other. So plan B.
This channel continues to blow me away, with all the inspirational tiny homes! This particular one is another stunner, so simple and sleek. Loved the dark color and the materials. Loved the outdoor shower and outdoor spaces. And I really love the multi-generational living!
💯 agree! It’s stunning!
I love the look and the materials, it's clearly their style. But man I would miss my couch.
Imagine living in a home where everything has to look like no one is living in there. How time consuming tiring this must be and boring after all.
what a beautiful and super aesthetic home! Thank you for giving us a tour!
The outside and garden is absolutely gorgeous 😍 I find the inside incredibly beautiful too, I could not live long with that but I could spend time there daily for it is very peaceful and serene. Such a unique peaceful home and surrounded by family too 💖
Exquisite design and workmanship... Lived in Kyoto for a few years and this house reminds me of a machiya (traditional Japanese townhouse). The outside shower could easily be an ofuro (bath) and the transitional area, a genkan (foyer/entrance hall) where you take off your shoes. If they do add a living room in the future, an irori (sunken hearth) would complete the feel.
Sorry, those dark colors are to depressing for me.....
absolutely stunning! very unique and gorgeous tiny house! I love it!
This is one of the few tiny houses I absolutely hate. It’s just so cold and uninviting, I couldn’t stay in a place like that for very long. BUT it isn’t for me so as long as they’re happy then go for it, just really not my cup of tea.
What an amazing design. So glad they shared their home. Truely one of my favorites.
Oh wow!
Great space and LOVE the outdoor shower!
What a lovely house and garden. Really a beautiful build.
Wow …. It’s very different but I love it 🥰 love the idea of families sharing same land we build such big houses on our land where we could be solving a lot of social Issues by relaxing laws to allow this to happen more often… well done 👍
Layout system isn't for me, but I absolutely love the color palette and the texture !!
my thoughts exactly, I would have personally added orange accents on the outside, even brown. all black can get dull after awhile
I feel literally opposite. LOL Not a fan of the color pallet or the stone texture walls but the layout is nice especially the bedroom that emulated the cocoon feeling of a sleeping loft.
The dark color is stressful mood pressuring. No matter how much you repeat yourself that you love it, you can't convince anyone.
This is gorgeous!
It's so unusual , so rude but so stilish and wonderful. Sometimes it looks like antient stone house, sometimes like an east-asian hut. Love it! Respect from Ukraine!
I feel that setting up a co-habitation concept with loved family is beautiful and in my opinion there is not enough of it.
We have been conditioned as a western society to be self- centred and self serving which is so sad.
If a family can share their wealth of ideas, their space and their love then that to me is the expression of true abundance. Bring it on I say.
I love the family sharing thing. You don't hear that too much. Everyone wants their independence, but life is so short not to enjoy your family. Beautiful home and Beautiful couple. 😍
