After the bloody action at Brawner's Farm on the 28th, Union Major General John Pope begins concentrating his Army of Virginia around the old battlefield of Manassas, where he is determined to trap and destroy Stonewall Jackson's Left Wing. Jackson's troops, however, are firmly entrenched behind an unfinished railroad along Stony Ridge, and Confederate reinforcements are fast approaching from the west in the form of James Longstreet's Right Wing. On the morning of Friday, August 29th, 1862, Pope commences the first attacks of the second day of the Second Battle of Bull Run or Manassas.

Hi Warhawk, I found this video new in the chronological playlist but not on the face of your channel page. Could there be an issue?
@@fGlassmanN its a new video, about to be released
14:57 Buford on the job with his Cavalry, but McDowell and Pope bungle everything.
Who else but Pope
@@WarhawkYT Burnside and Hooker
"My headquarters will be in the saddle." John Pope
"His headquarters are where his hindquarters should by." Everyone else
I love that quote
@@WarhawkYT Kinda sums up Pope's style of "leadership". LoL. All the bluster before the campaign turned in bluff during it. LoL. Cheers from Tennessee
I feel like the Northern Virginia Campaign and the 2nd Battle of Bull Run is one of the most underrated campaigns and battles of the Civil War, the fact that it’s the campaign just before the Maryland Campaign and the Battle of Antietam, make it largely forgotten amongst many Civil War Historians and enthusiasts.
I kinda agree with that, second Manassas even though popular isn’t talked about a lot
For the same reasons the North African Campaign doesn't get a lot of Attention in WWII circles- it's seen as fruitless incompetent generals banging their heads against walls until the hero general arrives to save the day. Especially against Lee/Rommel, two men who were regarded as geniuses for so long.
As a history fan, I find it astonishing that records exist detailing the exact regiments that were at each of the battles and not lost in the fog of war...
i'm guessing there is some serious research going into each upload.. Many thanks for them.
You’re welcome! I get many of my sources for troop positions from the library of congress civil war battle maps. You should check some of them out.
Although most people think Chancellorsville was lee’s best battle I think I it was this one Second Manassas.
Chancellorsville is Lee's greatest victory, Second Manassas is Lee's best victory
Pope: “Don’t worry. Steiner will attack shortly….”
Sigel: “Mien Fuhrer…. Steiner…”
Steiner did not attack as you wanted
This is actually worse than that. Hitler was at a point in his war where self-delusion was the only option. He had no way to win or even survive. Hitler was a lot more constructive back when there was a possibility of victory.
Pope had the means to win, but not the faculties to employ them.
Can we appreciate how Warhawk shows us how to pronounce the names of the German Officers commanding brigades and divisions in the Union Army.
I really like and admire warhawks chanel but as a german i must admit his pronounciation of german names has space for improvement. Example: In High German you speak the name "Schurz" with a long hissed "zzz" ad the end.
Thanks Maco, I’ll work on it, many times the pronunciations I get are americanified
The issue of orders and comprehension after receiving them are so bad on both sides, it leads me to believe the amount of dyslexia in communications is so severe that special units should have been utilized to rewrite and deiver orders to othe special units who could interpret orders correctly for unit commanders. Failure to communicate is an enemy of the highist order.
Communication is key to any victory
I probably won't be awake by 10 AM, so I will thank you here. Your videos are fantastic, and even though I hate when the North's ass gets kicked, but this is a Genius Campaign! I have to just stroke the algorithm because I am flat broke, but if a bundle fell in my lap you would have some of it.
Love,
David
Thanks David, we’ll be waiting for you!
It's an impressive level of incompetence to be able to convey the exact opposite of your intent in a written order.
It’s the pope grindset
Hopefully we'll see some videos on Bragg's Kentucky campaign that was happening in parallel.
Don’t worry, the Heartland Campaign will be right after Antietam
I really loved this video so much that I can’t wait to see what part 3 has in store for us.
Thanks, part 3 is going to feature a long more fighting as the units have all arrived to the battlefield.
@@WarhawkYT oh okay well I can’t wait to see porters attack and I can’t wait to see it because participating in porter’s attack would be 3 regiments one from Michigan, one from New York and one from Pennsylvania and these 3 regiments are the 16th Michigan infantry regiment, 44th New York infantry regiment and the 83rd Pennsylvania infantry regiment and these 3 regiments would go onto the defend the critical high ground of little round top during the battle of Gettysburg but I also can’t wait to see the sacrifice that the brave men of the 5th and 10th New York infantry regiments made and the cavalry fight that took place at the f Lewis house and Lewis ford.
So I've been working on a Civil War miniature wargame with some friends, your videos are literally a Godsend, and have been instrumental in creating the armies and scenarios in detail. Thank you so much for everything you do and keep up the good work!
Such a belligerent head of the church
Most Peaceful Patriarch
To look at the battle map, Pope wanted to fight in a caotic corps and divisions organisation. I am not surprised Pope lost. Perhaps he had organized his Army for 1-2 days he would have got better situation for a battle. In a better concentration situation, his orders would have been more understandable for his generals.
13:25 Just look at the disorganization between two Federal Armies. I’m no West Pointer but the situation looks utterly confused, divisions being reassigned and a lack of clear leadership.
Those Yankees ain’t organized
It reminds me of Japan's overly-complicated plans for the Battle of Midway.
@@michaelmccabe3079 This attack by Pope was not logical. Once McCllelan wasn’t able to commit more than two corps, they should’ve regrouped and planned an offensive then. But the Union’s circumstances and haste call for them to send in Pope’s army immediately, where as waiting should’ve been considered a viable option.
@@lukesmith1003 There would have been some political pressure to not be slow and miss opportunities, for sure. Destruction in detail does rely on speed and some risk.
The main problem, as brought up several times, is that there was zero internal coordination. The Army was not remotely close to acting as a single force. it was a slap/drumming with outspread fingers, not a rolled fist. Delaying to ensure it was the latter is the only option at that point, a strong support to your argument.
I will say it again, I love your videos. I don’t know what I like best: your graphics, knowledge of the events ,or your accent. In any case You have a super channel.
Thanks Wyoming! I’m glad you enjoy our stuff!
Have you read A Short History of the Civil War by Fletcher Pratt? He provides a humorous critique of Pope’s doomed command.
I have, I should check it out
Another great addition to the 2nd Manassas campaign. Seeing those formations that clearly is a beautiful thing. Keep up the great work my man.
I’m glad you enjoy it!
These are great man. Just discovered your channel. Fantastic stuff!
Who had the larger failure of gathering intelligence, Pope at Second Manassas or McClellan on the Peninsula?
Either way, another excellent video Warhawk!
That’s interesting, because it was two different methods. McClellan used Pinkerton and his Detectives who overestimated numbers, and therefore made McClellan that much more cautious.
Meanwhile, Pope received reports from his Cavalry on the Confederate’s strength and positions. Yet those reports do not make it to a higher headquarters.
In gathering, I would have to say McClellan on the Peninsula, because Pinkerton and his agents received bad info and sent it up to McClellan. Pope’s cavalry got good intelligence, he just either never received it or just did not take heed of it.
You’re welcome Mag
@@gallantcavalier3306 Agreed. Bad internal comms is not the same as bad intelligence. Luckily, Grant did not make Pope's mistake at the Battle of Shiloh- he spent the day riding around rallying and organizing troops and keeping lateral communications strong.
@@michaelmccabe3079 To say nothing of the fact of use of Cavalry during the Gettysburg Campaign and the Wilderness Campaign.
I see that you know how to pronounce Kearny properly. You’d be surprised how many people can’t and it bothers me since I’m from Kearny.
Keep up with the good stuff!
Thanks Man, our script writer is from the area and knows the names which has helped tremendously
These are very well done.
Thanks Donald!
Another great job!
Thanks Alan!
@warhawk I have enjoyed this channel since your first video on The Battle of Wilson's Creek. The unrivaled detail in all of these animated battle maps have greatly improved my understanding of the events. Your labeling and color coding specific units and commanders are easily the best on RUclips. I like that you have a unique style, provide context, balance perspectives of each engagement and that you're coverage of the war has been easy to follow, yet not too reductive.
However, could you please just maintain the accuracy of the subtitles/closed captions? Some of the transcript for this particular video did not match the narration. I'm grateful that you always include the option of captions. They are really convenient for those of us who are hard of hearing, read, but don't speak English fluently or who simply have an easier time following the often complex subject of military history with additional aid of reading. Thankully, this nitpick applies only to this video, which I otherwise found helpful. There were just enough mispellings and wrong words to cause confusion. I thought that I had turned on the notorious auto-generated CC instead.
Other than that one minor complaint, I have been spoiled by perfection for these past two years. I love the topographic details, narration idea and overall design in your most recent uploads. Thank you for all the hard work and research you do in putting out this consistently high quality content. I'm looking forward to when you deservedly and inevitability reach 1 million subscribers, and anticipate your future videos.

Thanks man for the kind words. About the captions, idk what you are talking about with the misspelled words. I uploaded the script to RUclips to use as captions, as what you described, you used the auto generated captions by RUclips and not my uploaded version. I’ll still check it out, thanks again.
With how well you make these videos, do you have any plans to do the French and Indian War?
Yes we are and we might start sooner than you think
I‘d be much more interested in the Coalition wars tbh, I think there is an outsize payoff to examining those battles on the level that this format allows. In part because I think the Armies that faced each other, especially during the first parts are fundamentally different from each other and I want to know whether that‘s true and how it looks in detail.
But on the other hand we’ve only dipped into the Civil War itself: Still haven‘t gotten Antietam, Stony River, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and yes, Gettysburg and Lees victories leading up to that. Plus the entire Overland Campaign.
I obviously hope you guys are getting some cash out of this as well, otherwise I‘m just making unfair demands (like Pope).
Absolutely great video, you guys make invaluable stuff!
Thanks Ty, thanks for helping with the uniforms!
Ur work ist awesome
As big a liar as John Pope was a common expression after this battle.
Lol
The subtitles in this video contain a lot of typos. There are also no punctuation marks. (It looks like these are automatic RUclips subtitles). For those who have difficulty listening to English and rely on reading, correct subtitles are very important. Does it make sense to wait for corrected subtitles or try to figure these out?
yep thats youtube automated subtitles for ya
nice video, this will be very long
Thanks, it will be lol
God this war was bloody affair. Hi from India.
Biggest in American history! Thanks
It was a terrible conflict, and it's effects still reverberate in American life to this day.
@@WarhawkYT thanks for the knowledge you have given us. 👍
Thank you for making this.
You’re welcome Stephen!
Maybe it was a mistake to put Pope as commander of that army. Why not George Thomas,a man from Virginia. He could have used the field better.
Thomas was viewed with some suspicion since he was from Virginia
@@WarhawkYT And the Union cause was made all the worse for it. The ROCK OF CHICKAMAUGA was a better general than the vast majority of those who looked down on him and suspected his loyalty.
@@BrorealeK Thomas was the greatest General (n.b. Grant was the best supreme commander, which is higher than general) on either side. It is a pity we never got a Thomas vs. Lee battle...
As,always, Excellent yall.
Thanks Eric!
