Sometimes I like to play Studio Ghibli music and imagine how my life would be romanticized in a Studio Ghibli film. I think The Wind Also Rises is a good example of this, since it has less fantasy than the other films. The protagonist spends his life working and getting by in wartime Japan-he has a deep passion for what he does, but he’s also not a pacifist hero nor does he have a particularly “happy” life. Miyazaki captures the elegance of imperfect “mundanity.”

I had an interesting conversation about embracing life’s mundanity with a friend recently. In fact, I did a whole photo series inspired by mundanity, romanticizing the normal everyday of my surroundings - that was fun!
Personally, when I feel like romanticizing the mundane, I remind myself to look up: when I’m driving around running errands, instead of only seeing traffic, construction, the same old streets I see all the time, I look up at the mountains in the distance or the leaves on the trees or even just the clouds in the sky. It’s like taking a deep, cleansing breath.

That sums up why I'd never work in marketing. The depth and psychological brainwash these companies produce is mind-boggling. I'm still convinced that marketing today has a huge negative impact on mental health. Also because you can't escape advertisement. It's everywhere. Without my AdBlock I'd go insane 😂
I'd love more videos about this kind of topic. I find it fascinating and helpful.

I feel you Anya! I don't think marketing is 'bad' across the board, or that even most brands are predatory. Some industries and brands are worse than others! Small businesses usually do marketing well and even big brands like Indigo can do some cool ads that don't make me want scream 😅 I'm currently doing some work in real-estate and marketing there is very interesting because it's ony of the few industries where just about everyone truly has a budget. So there's very little of trying to get impulse buys for example.

@@shawnaripari I totally agree with you. I should have been more specific with the companies I mean (big soft drink brands, fast fashion brands, big pharma etc.) Nowadays I get easily overwhelmed with ads and all the choices. I guess it also falls to us the consumer to not buy everything lol. That's why I'm so grateful for budgets, project pans, no buys and your channel. It's a big reminder every week to be mindful and go deeper into my thinking and decision making and plan ahead :) Great content as always.

Since I am a stay at home mom I often find myself SO bored just being at home. I usually end up going shopping as a way to cure that because I feel like I’m still being “social” at the store even though I’m not but I’m working on this so intently! This month and into next year I have and will be been collecting items in a bin that I run out of like makeup, chapstick, dry shampoo or beauty products and learning to make those myself. It will appreciate the item more because I know I put work into making it and eventually I can show my little one the art of making it like chapstick for example. And as simple as it is it has made me look forward to things running out so I know I’m putting them to use and then we will have an activity to do to make more once they run out to help with that feeling of boredom and it’s fun to look back on the things I’ve used up! I have known how to crochet for a few years but have recently picked it back up again and have used that skill to fix some of my knit sweaters instead of automatically buying a whole new one like I have in the past and also potentially crocheting a whole sweater when I feel the need to have a new piece of clothing and it’s something to do in my spare time so I don’t feel the need to shop!

I embrace the mundane of everyday stuff. I have taken care of two people in my family that had serious illness and spent a lot of time in the hospital. I enjoy all the comforts of my home because its better to be home even though its not shiny and new as opposed to being in the hospital.

I am so grateful for your content around contentment! Truly, I feel like you summarize and share these findings that I’m sure took a while to even process.
I’m doing a 28 day gratitude practice but I might do it everyday now so I can maintain my practice of contentment. I think it also helps me with my “boredom” alongside trying to have slow dopamine mornings where I don’t go on social media where I scroll (youtube is the exception if it’s a video I can listen to like a podcast).
Having boredom is very important and also forcing ourselves to not do certain things out of boredom can have us redirect our time to something we do want to be doing or creating.
    Thank you!

I took the time to quantify that I have enough nail polish to do a weekly mani and biweekly pedi for the next 75 years. And I'm 57 years old. And in total, my current collection has cost me over $600. I think framing it like this is really going to help me.

Your videos are a lot better than the average vlogmas videos. They have to take a lot of time to make.
It was interesting hearing you talk about experiential marketing. Even in areas where there isn’t marketing to the degree you explain (e.g., small business), I think a lot of us learn to believe that lots can be fixed with stuff.
One thing that helps me continually be happy with my stuff is thinking about what my life would be without it. Anytime I pull out something I don’t often use or find stuff I didn’t remember, I often thank my past self for getting it. I think your minimalist makeup bag idea gives a taste of this. So you can think, wow, what a blessing it is to have choice in my blushes. Also, I appreciate the little bits of beauty I have put into my life.

Thank you for talking about experiential/"lifestyle" marketing! When I see that a company is highly leaning into this marketing tactic I really take note of it. If the product has enough merit, value, or uniqueness in itself this strategy wouldn't be necessary to sell it. I do know how enticing these ads can be, but have realized that I'm the curator of my own lifestyle and don't have to buy a specific thing by a specific brand to accomplish that.

Don't worry about not posting daily; there's a lot more that goes into videos than what a viewer sees.
Regarding seeing my stuff, I use Trello to track each item in a given category. I title the column with the number of items I have in that category, then in the column I have the images of each item document because then I can visually see my items and not just see the name of the item listed (which doesn't always help me remember what that item is).
