  • Trailer Breakaway Cable Replacement (A Better Option)
In this video I show you a great product to replace that breakaway cable hanging from your trailer connections. The minute I saw this product I knew it would be an excellent replacement to the kinked and tangled and knotted cable I was previously using.

Excellent. Good advice. The link provided is for a 6' cable. My cable is 4'. When I loop it through my chain connectors, then connect it back to the brake mechanism, the length is about 2'4". The chains are just a bit more than 2' pulled taut.
Even though the brake cable is longer, it's mounted about 6" further back than the chains. Therefore, with the brake chain looping back to the brake mechanism, it has about 2"-3" of slack. If the trailer disconnects, the brake cable will engage about 2" before the chains will pull taut.
For this twisty cable to work as shown in the video, a 6' and even 4' cable wouldn't engage the trailer brake. It would need to be a 2' cable ... or a 4' cable looped back to itself.
These measurements would most likely change from trailer to trailer.

I personally like the cable... my cable is longer than the chains. This topic, the Breakaway Cable, and its length is open for interpretation eh... If the hitch fails for whatever reason, the crossed chains are to cradle the tongue (concept anyway), and the driver to bring the truck/trailer to a safe controlled stop... At this point, the trailer has not broken away as of yet... should the chains fail, the trailer would be considered as broken away - then the breakaway would be activated and trailer brakes applied...
This is the only way I've understood this...
    Thanks,
    Kev

These are nice to look at versus the typical cable. I typically weave the cable through the chains a couple times so there is no real friction and picks the cable off the ground but attach it to the truck with its own clip but even then there is a chance the cable might get pinched in a chain link so switching to one of these this week.

The breakaway cable should be longer than the safety chains according to RVIA Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. This will activate the brakes in the event you lose the trailer connection and the safety chains fail which will bring the trailer to a stop.

I think that you should make sure the brake away cable is shorter than your safety chains.
That way it will apply brakes when it comes off the hitch?

    • @irnfocus

I agree; should have less slack than your safety chains to be effective

  • @Grumpyneanderthal
    @Grumpyneanderthal 5 лет назад +5

When it comes to safety the first consideration is functionality not aesthetics or ease of hookup. When hooked up the cable should have enough slack to accommodate turning but less slack than the chains. The concept is that when the trailer ball fails the brakes would be engaged before the chains snap thereby allowing a controlled stop of the trailer and tow vehicle. The cable should not be woven through or attached to the chains instead be looped through the chain slots and pulled back to connect to the looped connected to the pin. The knots tied near the loop with the pin in the original cable where there to provide a connection point when the cable is too short to reach the loop with the pin.

I didn't see where you hook the cable - do you clip it to the underside of the truck where the chains hook-up? Ours was threaded through the chains, and it is now shredded.

Is that just coiled plastic... or is it plastic coated coiled cable? If it's only plastic, I think it was a bad decision to replace the steel cable with plastic, which gets brittle from weather and UV light. If it's plastic coated coiled cable... great idea!

If it ever does Breakaway how do you know the slack on that will catch before your chains do?

That’s an excellent question and one I had not previously considered. My focus has always been on stopping the camper should it separate from the tow vehicle. A potentially more frightening experience would be if the hitch came undone and you now had a camper being dragged by chains. Attempting to stop in this situation could cause the camper to slam into the tow vehicle. It seems many of the manufacturers have also not considered this as the majority of breakaway cables are sold at a minimum of 4’ which Doesn’t strike me as short enough to stop a trailer still attached to the vehicle by chains. I have some measuring to do on my setup and may need to put out another video on the topic with my findings. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it.

@@TheAverageDan no problem... Definitely seems like a good idea and a lot less headache cuz I just hooked mine up today too and I hate that part... I guess you can just hold firmly at the unit and then stretch it out and measure the total stretched size so you know exactly how far it will stretch before it begins to pull it out

Hello, if your hitch detaches and the chains do catch the trailer, the trailer will still be connected by your main trailer power cable and therefore you should be able to bring the trailer to a complete stop with your brake controller, in theory least. That has not been the case for me. I was pulling a trailer for a friend using his truck and his hitch snapped in half an 35mph and both changes broke. The trailer proceeded to chase me down the hill. I out ran the trailer and you will find that the tongue of the trailer digging the ground seems to work rather well as an emergency break. I have seen chains break on many other peoples rigs as well. It really was not a well thought out plan but might be useful in some situations.
@theaveragedan, my only concern with the spring coil connection is, it gives a chance for one of the parts of the coil to snag on the trailer hitch assembly and having your full emergency brakes lock down at 70mph in a curve (something always happens in a curve going down hill somewhere in PA) could prove problematic. Well there is my two cents (about that's what it's worth) Travel safely my friends.

This is really only useful when the carabiner is looping up through the chain “hook point” and then attached back onto itself.. likely at the key ring. Only then will the slack be taken up enough to make it work in the event of emergency.
Also I can’t exactly tell how long the one is in his video.. but this is how I used mine and it works fine.

Is there a proper way to replace. When you replace it disconnect from the truck first than replace it?

"Break away Cables" should be just shorter then your "safety chains" when hooked up. And be independent as well. If your trailer becomes unhooked from the ball , BUT your safety chains hold, the break away cable will engage brakes and keep your trail from running into your tow vehicle. And you can pull over with some sort of control. If all fail, brake away engages and trailer hopefully stops w/o too much damage done. But in the end its your shit on the trailer and you do what you want LMAO.

BAD video... it's never mentioned or made clear that the breakaway cable should be long enough to allow turning radius, BUT short enough that the cable will be pulled Before your chains are pulled taut if the trailer comes off the ball.
