Great informative vlog. Been caravaning for over 35 years never changed or carried a spare breakaway cable 😱 will order one now !!! Thanks for the heads up 👍👍
That’s a top tip there Dave about carrying a spare cable 👍. I always carry a small selection of tools, all I need now is a spare cable. Thanks for demonstrating 🛠 Cheers Rob
Hi Dave and Helen. Really useful vlog. We always carry a spare breakaway cable, but never had to use it, so appreciate the advice on fitting etc. Many thanks. George and Trish. 😊
Hello George & Trish, It was an eye opener to us to be honest because until I researched the content, it hadn’t occurred to us to carry a spare. Dave has found one that’s even easier to fit now! As always, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers Dave & Helen 👍
Thanks for the video, looks like we might need to carry a spare cable on our travels plus a hacksaw or a dremal type cutting tool and long screw driver to get the old one off.
@HelenandDave Thats true. The most common fail of it happening (unhitching) is not putting it on the ball correctly in the first place (easy done if not fully concentrating) Most sites have speed bumps/ramps on them nowadays so it usually pops off going over those when setting off and leaving a site. I seen that happen twice now over the last 22 years caravanning. The usual rule of thumb is pulling the hitch up hard to see if the tow car moves and pulls up with it, if it doesn't then it's not on correctly.
Thanks for the video tips Dave. I've seen Dan's vlog too, but yours reminded me. I've ordered a couple off Amazon, although our 'van was serviced end of last year - I did think I might replace the cable.
Thanks Dave, me and the wife are talking about getting a caravan, we are in our early sixties, so retirement not to far away , so I thought start watching some RUclips videos and learn what we need to do, what we need to get, not got a van yet, so you never know may get a caravan fully equipped ? , thanks for the tip 👍👍.
Had to replace ours a few years ago after unhitching on a steep slop at Tregarton Park. Snapped the cable, but done its job, so I would like to say when unhitching always leave the breakaway cable to last
Thanks for the video. We have just fitted a new cable (with the split ring). However, my husband tried applying the handbrake by pulling hard on the cable as we have seen in another video, but he says it is impossible to do. It is much too stiff. Is there a way of adjusting this as we are concerned that the handbrake will not be applied when the cable is taught if the caravan becomes detached from the car.
Thanks for watching. I think it would be quite hard to apply the handbrake by pulling the cable by hand. If you can apply the brake using the leaver ok then it should be fine. If however the brake is stiff anyway then it may need to be greased. Mine is checked at the annual service (which was this week) and it’s fine. ATB Dave & Helen 👍
You should have caught that ring with a pair of pliers, would have been easier than hammering, a little cordless grinder would have saved some sweat too cutting the old one off, well done though.
I'm wondering if you do need a spare, the caravan is going to come to a reasonably sudden stop with no brake lights as a warning, so any following vehicles will hit the caravan and therefore will only move again on the back of a lorry!
Lift up front!!! Brilliant idea!!! But secure with steadies. Great advice.
Thanks very much and thanks for watching 👍😊
Never thought about a second cable! Thanks for the tip 👍 Graeme
Cheers Graeme, thanks for watching and leaving a comment 👍

Hi Mark, hopefully something you wouldn’t need but it takes now room or weight in the van so we’ll worth it. Thanks as always, Helen & Dave

🤣🤣 That's a distinct possibility John
Did well not to slice a finger off with that screwdriver 😂
Always living life on the edge 👍
Carry 2 inside you accidentally forget to remove your breakaway cable when unhitching.
Good point Billy, thanks. ATB Dave and Helen 👍
