Weird thoughtt, but could you turn tthe engine around with the trans facing front, use a drivetrain chain drive off of that (which I think would reverse rotation) use a driveshaft back to a tansfer case and go from there? Seems like someething like that would be complicated, but might work better for packaging overall. I haven't worked out the details completely, but it popped in my head.
That was my original plan, but would mean I'd have to retube the axles I have or find an offset rear axle, then flip the diffs. There also is the consideration of longevity of the transfer case running on the front drive all the time and how to disconnect the rear drive (using a gear drive case would be doable with a twin stick. The shifter also would be more complex. All overcomeable problems but i figured KISS and do it this way. I also gain more interior space this way since a big part of the engine compartment is now empty.
