As someone who knows a lot of these on guitars, I can confirm that a lot do NOT follow the same chord progression. At least a third do not.
Most obvious are Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Self Esteem, and Sex and Candy. Not even close.

Look folks, before you start talking about how pop stars are unoriginal, there actually aren't many chord progressions out there. There are surprisingly few combinations that work and sound good. This happens to be one of the most powerful chord progressions; that's why it gets used so much.

I just love how the last song, "Scar" has the chorus that explains this entire video and then ends with the line "That's all it takes to be a star." It's like it was makes just for it to be in this video because I never knew of it's existence until Axis made this.

There's actually quite a few songs on this list where I end up reciting the 4 chord song instead of the lyrics from just that song glad i'm not alone.
I feel like the fact that a solid 80% of these absolute bangers is maybe the even more impressive part. Like what about these cords is sooo appealing?
I assume the familiarity. Our ears become extremely accustomed to this progression (clearly). It's relaxing. Tension in music comes from subverting expectations with unexpected chords or modulations. Since these chords are extremely predictable to our brains, it almost feels like home
Basically there's the concept of tonic chords and dominant chords. Tonic chords are at "home," they sound resolved and like they don't need to go anywhere. Dominant chords are tense and feel like you must go somewhere, like you've got to move to another chord. The progression is I-V-vi-IV. I is a tonic chord (it is the strongest tonic chord), then we go to V which is the dominant/tense. vi is a tonic chord but it's got more of a wistful sense to it and isn't quite as strong as I. IV is subdominant -- it isn't resolved, but it's not as tense as V, it isn't at home but it's not desperate to go somewhere either. So you have this constant home-tense-kinda home-kinda tense. It also makes a very good loop because unlike the strongest resolution which is V-I, it features IV-I when the loop repeats which doesn't have as much sense of finality to it, rather it kinda feels like it wants to keep looping around. So it's all about tension and release and the open-ended sound of the end of the loop.

Creativity is usually found in the melody, which can be broken down into a (mostly) unique pattern of individual notes and is why you can distinguish between songs being played here, but most western music is based on a single octet interval. Doesn't mean there's no creativity, it's just the structure of the traditional western music. This video is such an incredible demonstration,

This is the exact reason metal music is superior. It's a much more versatile creative outlet with fewer constraints to deal with.

For all you wondering "How can all these songs have the same four chords? This is so unoriginal!" They don't actually have the exact same chords. They have the same Chord Progression. All they did was place them in the same key so they'd all sound the same. Plus it's not unoriginal even if they had the same exact chords, because it takes more than that to make good music. They could all have different tempo, rhythm, and melodies, and they'd be a totally different song and most people wouldn't even realize it's the same chords

Saying pop music is unoriginal because it often uses only 4 chords isn't really an objective reasoning. 90% of a piece of classical music uses only 3 chords (tonic, subdominant, dominant). Here and there a secondary dominant chord, some chord extensions or suspended chords and that's it.
You can't compare these two musical genres because they differ from the ground up. A pop song is based on a chord progression on which somebody can then pour his soul out. Classical music is based on melodies. It uses music theory to find chords that match those melodies. It also has much more freedom to develop a musical idea and working with motives, changing keys and so on while a pop song just wants your attention for 3 minutes.
Needles to say i think that classical music has much more to offer BUT don't think pop music is 'bad' because it only uses 4 chords. there's much more to music than the number of chords used ...

So the most common chord progressions are the following: I-V-vi-IV and vi-VI-I-V. Personally I prefer to use the keys of G and C, because of the more simplistic chord fingerings. That would be G-D-Em-C and Em-C-G-D or C-G-Am-F and Am-F-C-G. Not that anyone cares about some random youtube viewers guitar preferences. Lol

I'm finally glad to see someone put this video together. I've always hated that chord progression because of it's overuse and unoriginality. Or maybe it's cause for Bass Players, we can sniff out bad chord progressions. After a while, if you start to feel like you're playing the exact same bass lines over and over, you may want to refer to this list.
Instead of slamming music for being "all the same", I think this has more of a "look at all these artists can do with the same 4 chords" feel to it, and I think it's quite neat.

Couple of years ago I worked as a newspaper carried, basicly just driving around the countryside shoving newspapers in the peoples' mailboxes and it was my tradition to always sing along to this when my route was near to end. :)
I didn't feel complete until I learned how to sing it
just so everyone's aware, it's said in the beginning that the chord progression is the same for all of these songs. It's not C G Am F; It's I V VI IV. So most of these songs were written in different keys with the same chord progression.

gPorto In Music there’s something we call progression. A progression can be explained as stripping chords changes to its function or relationship and we do this with Roman numerals (e.g. with C being the tonic: C=I Dm=ii Em=iii F=IV G=V Am=vi) so:
In C; C G Am F = I V vi IV
In D; D A Bm G = I V vi IV
In E; E B C#m A = I V vi IV
And so on, so the original songs may have different chords but the chords CHANGE in the same way. If you play guitar you can relate it to playing a song without capo and then playing it with the capo while keeping the same “chords fingerings”, the chords will be different but they will change in the same way.

Put another way, to people who know how to play C G Am F on the guitar, throw the capo on 2nd fret and that's what these guys are playing in, but if you keep moving the capo, all the songs in the original forms are exactly the same pattern in various keys on the guitar
It was this song that made me realize how much I like that chord structure like most of the songs on this list and a bunch of songs that aren't that I noticed after
