I scrimmaged with your Dad at Dematha/St. Johns basketball camp____-R.I.P.__________he was great at drawing the charge - getting a foul called on the offensive player
I was at the game. I played on the DeMatha freshmen team. This is one game where the Stags bottled up Lew Alcindor, front and back. The game plan was to keep his 7'3" frame from getting near the basket. The Stags played well !!
I was at that game. It was a big event, I lived in Bladensburg and was a day student at Maryland. I think the cheerleaders may have been from Elizabeth Seton HS. That was Dematha’s sister school if memory serves me.
I attended Dematha/St. Johns basketball camp a couple of years after this game. Hall of Fame Coach Morgan Wooten was so proud - he showed the film of it at least 2 times to everybody at camp. Dematha had 4 stars who excelled in college - Bernard Williams (Lasalle), Sid Catlett and Bob Whitmore (Notre Dame) and Mickey Wiles (Maryland). Sadly, Coach and all the stars I mentioned have passed. R.I.P.
The music is from "Endless Summer" I believe. The classic documentary of the same time period about surfing. I'm pretty sure whoever put the music in was trying to capture the time period with the music. So, it makes sense to me.
I think #22 for DeMatha is Bernie Williams who played for the LaSalle college team in 1967 to '69 . They were the #2 rated team in the country just behind UCLA and Alcindor / Bernie went on to play in the NBA for San Diego
to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or PROBABLY will SOMEWHAT like power memorial high's varsity team because i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE kareem abdul-jabbar
A lot of people from the DC area claimed after this game that Dematha was the greatest h.s. basketball team in the country. I agree that they were very great but I don't know how that could be said. They never played against top teams from Chicago, Detroit or L.A. I also don't believe they played against top teams from Baltimore or Philly. But they were great. And Coach Morgan Wooten's reputation for greatness is truly deserved. Also in this game although Cole Field House was not technically their home court it is but about 3 miles from Dematha High School. Because of this they had a tremendous advantage in the game. It's not easy for h.s. basketball players to travel from N.Y. to D.C. and play a game during this era. It was very rarely done. I don't believe Dematha could have beaten them if the game was held in New York. Nonetheless congrats to Dematha.
DeMatha beat North Cambria from Barnsboro, Pa., the Pennsylvania large school state champion that season. The top 2 teams from Chicago, Marshall and Thornton, lost in the Illinois semifinals to downstate teams Collinsville and Quincy. I sincerely doubt either of those teams would have a chance against DeMatha or Power. They would have a hard time defeating MAC conference runnerup Mackin or Massachusetts state champion Catholic Memorial. A little knowm fact is that earlier that season, Mackin high from Washington almost beat Power before DeMatha did.
My father (Charles "Chuck" Church) also played for DeMatha, but I think he left before this game (he unfortunately passed away). Did your friend happen to play with a Chuck Church during his Freshman year?
It wasn't easy for a high school basketball player to travel from New York City to DC during that era. It was very rarely done. I doubt that Dematha could have beaten Power Memorial if the game was played in New York City. But I'm not trying to diminish Dematha's great moment of glory. Just talking.
epics7 I guess you were one of them. Well, I can say that the cheer leaders were cute despite the sweaters. My high school team wasnt great, but it would beat either of these teams by alot.
Normanb15 These were two of the premier teams in the country. Trust me, your HS team couldn't have beaten DeMatha's Freshman team. Wooten was one on the all-time greatest HS coaches, ever.
RIP Dad. Mickey Wiles #13, starting point guard for DeMatha’s ‘65 basketball team.

+Mike Church His name does not sound familiar for the years I was at DeMatha.
You played against one of the greatest nba players of all time nice
You can see in their eyes when they came out for the 2nd half that they knew they were going to lose.

Where did Ernie Austin play?
great footage & tremendous music.

Ernie Austin #22 Dematha. ❤️ RIP Dad

Great vid,thanks...DeMatha '73
I tell you what, that damn bastard coach should be fired for not giving it to Alcindor every single solitary play...
I watched a documentary on how Lou turned into Kareem it had something to do with not liking his highschool coach and the way he talked to him😭😭
I’d be so terrified to go against Kareem
to be COMPLETELY honest i did do and/or PROBABLY will SOMEWHAT like power memorial high's varsity team because i did do and/or PROBABLY will really LOVE kareem abdul-jabbar
Beautiful
You know, my grandfather could have been playing in that game if he grew just 3 inches
I had forgotten that they didn't have seats on the floor. They could have sold 2000 more tickets.
For being two of the top teams in the country they sure missed a lot of shots!
😂 cause basketball players were garbage then no matter how good their legacy claims 😂
@@ygwaltgmb Lew Alcindor (Kareem) was garbage?? How about a lot of pressure on those youngsters?

TheHollis777 on a good day you can literally walk to the Maryland campus from DeMatha. Straight shot.

DeMatha lost to Power the year before in NYC. This was the reciprocal game the following year.
Interesting footage. And I'll hand it to whoever posted this: they could not *possibly* have found more dreadful music to pair with the video.

Bet DeMatha couldn't beat Thornridge from 1972!
Where did DeMatha get the female cheerleaders? They are an all boys school.
Power Memorial no longer exists. Mel Kennedy played for them, and then for the University of Virginia.
Chris Mullen and Len Elmore went there also (Power)
my dad is number 13 mickey wiles... get off
Where did Mickey play college ball? He was Scholastic Coach Regional All American
@@nelsonmcatee3721 University of Georgia and then transferred to Maryland and played for Coach Lefty Driesell
They look like basketball players, but they cant play. This is a bad showcase of any talent that may be among them

The Hubie Brown camp in the Catskills really helped Kareem in getting an edge on the competition during his college years.
Lew was ass in this game lol
Overrated like a mf 🤣
Lol anyone can claim they are the goat playing these scrubs 😅😭🤣
FACT 🤣
