RIP Dad. Mickey Wiles #13, starting point guard for DeMatha’s ‘65 basketball team.

I scrimmaged with your Dad at Dematha/St. Johns basketball camp____-R.I.P.__________he was great at drawing the charge - getting a foul called on the offensive player

I was at the game. I played on the DeMatha freshmen team. This is one game where the Stags bottled up Lew Alcindor, front and back. The game plan was to keep his 7'3" frame from getting near the basket. The Stags played well !!

You can see in their eyes when they came out for the 2nd half that they knew they were going to lose.

I was at that game. It was a big event, I lived in Bladensburg and was a day student at Maryland. I think the cheerleaders may have been from Elizabeth Seton HS. That was Dematha’s sister school if memory serves me.

I attended Dematha/St. Johns basketball camp a couple of years after this game. Hall of Fame Coach Morgan Wooten was so proud - he showed the film of it at least 2 times to everybody at camp. Dematha had 4 stars who excelled in college - Bernard Williams (Lasalle), Sid Catlett and Bob Whitmore (Notre Dame) and Mickey Wiles (Maryland). Sadly, Coach and all the stars I mentioned have passed. R.I.P.

    great footage & tremendous music.

The music is from "Endless Summer" I believe. The classic documentary of the same time period about surfing. I'm pretty sure whoever put the music in was trying to capture the time period with the music. So, it makes sense to me.

I think #22 for DeMatha is Bernie Williams who played for the LaSalle college team in 1967 to '69 . They were the #2 rated team in the country just behind UCLA and Alcindor / Bernie went on to play in the NBA for San Diego

A lot of people from the DC area claimed after this game that Dematha was the greatest h.s. basketball team in the country. I agree that they were very great but I don't know how that could be said. They never played against top teams from Chicago, Detroit or L.A. I also don't believe they played against top teams from Baltimore or Philly. But they were great. And Coach Morgan Wooten's reputation for greatness is truly deserved. Also in this game although Cole Field House was not technically their home court it is but about 3 miles from Dematha High School. Because of this they had a tremendous advantage in the game. It's not easy for h.s. basketball players to travel from N.Y. to D.C. and play a game during this era. It was very rarely done. I don't believe Dematha could have beaten them if the game was held in New York. Nonetheless congrats to Dematha.

DeMatha beat North Cambria from Barnsboro, Pa., the Pennsylvania large school state champion that season. The top 2 teams from Chicago, Marshall and Thornton, lost in the Illinois semifinals to downstate teams Collinsville and Quincy. I sincerely doubt either of those teams would have a chance against DeMatha or Power. They would have a hard time defeating MAC conference runnerup Mackin or Massachusetts state champion Catholic Memorial. A little knowm fact is that earlier that season, Mackin high from Washington almost beat Power before DeMatha did.

My father (Charles "Chuck" Church) also played for DeMatha, but I think he left before this game (he unfortunately passed away). Did your friend happen to play with a Chuck Church during his Freshman year?

It wasn't easy for a high school basketball player to travel from New York City to DC during that era. It was very rarely done. I doubt that Dematha could have beaten Power Memorial if the game was played in New York City. But I'm not trying to diminish Dematha's great moment of glory. Just talking.
