- The Willys Jeep is coming together, but it's not ready yet, so we'll work on it a little bit this time, and then put some new PRP seat covers in my JL NewbSock.

Hey Fred, so the argument about what gear oil to use comes from the differences between GL-4 and GL-5 grade oils. Apparently the GL-5 which is what almost all gear lube is rated at now, is corrosive to the old brass synchros in the older transmission/t-cases. Apparently since GL-5 sticks to the gears better it can strip the outer coating leading to faster synchro wear. So, many people recommend getting GL-4 since it doesn't have those same corrosive properties. I do know NAPA auto parts usually carries it. However for 99% of people it probably does not matter what gear lube you use as these old jeeps usually aren't driven tens of thousands of miles a year.
Yes GL 4 should be used. Won't hurt brass parts. I love my flat fender. But I also have a 2020 Rubicon. There all great in there own way. Keep the videos coming
I've rebuilt nearly 100 manual transmissions. Everything from a model to t56. I have never seen corroded syncros. I do drag race with a ford toploader. I will say there is a noticeable difference in GL4 and GL5 in shifting. The GL4 isn't as slick as the GL5 and let's the syncro do its job better and shifting is much faster.
Dude. Even modern transmissions spec GL4. 2005 Mazda 3i manual transmission needed it.
I love all jeeps. I love all 4x4s just love content. Miss Dirt every day.
Helpful hint. Put the seat covers in the dryer, for just a few minutes.
Same trick I use for recovering chairs with "pleather".
I like the end. New seat covers with no dog hair. Time to fix that right away.
The manual from that era probably calls for whale oil or something. 😂 I agree with you, any sort of oil is better than the rusty water that you removed.
I like the Orange Rims on your Flat Fender Jeep
Some modern gear lubes may have a corrosive effect on yellow metals. GL 1 is pretty much guaranteed safe, Stay Lube products generally also ok. Probably worth playing safe with a fresh rebuild. This Jeep, not so much.
I wish bestop would make a white or hounds tooth color. black gets really hot in the desert.
GL-1 Mineral oil was first used (still available) through GL-4. These are most recommended.
Additives in GL5 gear oil will break down the soft metals in the trans/transfer case. GL4 that is not also rated for GL5 is probably the best to run. I run NAPA GL-1 90w in my '59 CJ5, since my local NAPA carries it.
Man those seat covers are really gonna stand out in a Black & White Jeep.
Love it Fred
You can't go wrong with a Jeep!
Fred I like your style as you explain what your doing. So many other how to video explain it once. You explain it more then once in detail. Thank you!
You should've just taken it to Rick Pewe's house and have Freiburger help out with the flat fender.
Another fine video!!!!
Love the zoom on Batman 😂
That was fun thanks
Fred, love the flat fender! You might let the viewers know that both ATF and acetone are very flammable.
i like all the Jeep content, just not into foreign stuff, im born and raised in Detroit so it matters to me
Love this idea for my jt
Glad PRP fixed it, but that seems like a really simple thing to mess up.
The doggos loved it.
Tube sock !!!!!! i need me some tube sock !!!!!
Those seat covers look like they fit really well. So many will slide around on you.
Those seats are wicked nice! Gonna get some for our Jeep! Great heads-up!!!
I put that ATF/acetone into a spray bottle like your WD bottle. Works amazing
You are just cranking out awesome videos, such a treat!
Also, please keep up the JL videos 😁 I love the old Jeeps, but like you said, there are a lot of JL drivers who are using these videos to work on their own rigs (such as myself)
Thanks for the motivation to get out and work on my jeeps.
Looks great Fred!! I see you chose your favorite colors 👍🏻👍🏻
I had a 97 TJ I put Smitty built Seat cover's on it looked good for what it was.
I am so pleased to find your channel! I immdeiately subscribed. I became a big fan watching "Dirt Every Day" on Motortrend. Keep 'em coming! Your posts are informative and entertaining.. Thanks!
Fred - you now have me wondering if your ATF/Acetone mix is the same as Marvel Mystery Oil. I use that stuff and it has never failed me.
Here's a fact for you Fred. Did you know the military had trailer axles that ran off the jeep's PTO?
Batman!!!😊
Flat fender flat fender flat fender!!!!!
I wish I was an old jeep so Fred could tighten my lug nuts. ❤😂
The most real guy of many so called real guys in the not real vidland, really....
You might want to double-check the direction of the seat airbags. I think you may have had it correct the first time. I think they pop towards the outside. I haven't seen any that pop toward the inside. Though I'm not a jeep owner. If the cover is on backwards, that could be bad in a crash. Just a heads up.
thanks! check out the last 30 seconds of the video
Interesting colour choice for the seat covers, though I am just really not impressed with the fit or finish. Had the PRP ones. Ended up returning. Quality was just not there. I have the carharrtt ones, and they are a far better fit and finish, and incredibly durable.
Batman is ready!!
The Jeep is 80 years old. Put any damn oil you want in it. Don’t overthink it.
If it aint leakin it's empty!
Where did Newbsock come from?
Hey, Fred send me a jeep, no old ones in Fla
Later jeep man
Wow those are some ugly seat covers, Fred. But they fit a million times better than the Bestop ones did.
Dog tested!
