Thanks again for a great lesson. The thumb on the pickup is something that I have been doing for over 20 years and for most of that time I knew it caused problems muting the E String (4-string bass) which I partially compensated for by muting it with my left thumb when possible. I felt it would be a disaster to try to break the habit since my playing would fall all over the place; muting the E-string when I want to play it, plucking the wrong string because my hand is not in its usual position, etc. Also it seems a lot of energy essentially moving the entire right-hand up and down every time you want to use the E-string seems a lot of work and tiring. However after seeing this lesson, I decided to try to break this habit before I die. Actually it is not as hard as I thought. A half-hour of playing basic lines plus moderate-tempo songs I know well and it started coming together. The tone is significantly more focused on the non-E strings. Just wanted to mention the thumb-on-pickup habit is not as hard to break as it seems. The real test will be the show I am doing tomorrow but it looks positive. Thanks again for the great lesson.
I feel kinda lucky because my thumb was already naturally resting on the E string. I anchor my pinky on the other side of the pickup sometimes. But I also have an unconventional style. I use my thumb on the E string, probably a habit carried over from playing guitar. Sometimes I use a forefinger but the thumb is my go-to. That's probably why it rests there naturally. If your experiment doesn't work out, try using your thumb to strike the E.
No time wasted going right into the first tip so you get my like just for that. I got back from trying out my first bass earlier today and was resting my thumb on the pickup. Thanks for showing me a better way! Saved me all that wrist strain. Back to practice! :)
On my P bass I have a set of Labella Flats that are ~13 years old, just keep them clean. Rounds go on my J style bass and those get changed pretty much as often as you suggest. If you can afford it try to have two basses. If you only have one bass set it up with whatever sound that can land you the gig. I’ve been considering a PJ bass with rounds and a “series/parallel” switch. That blended tone has really been growing on me. No matter how long I’ve been playing I always look for something basic I might have missed. There was no RUclips when I started so it was picking up as I went along. Thank you for these vids!
I have two J's (my first one just stopped working the night before a gig so I bought a new one aiming for close to the same model). I'm interested in a P, tho. What I'd really like is a collection with different gauge strings and a variety of flats and rounds. But yeah, dream on right?
Thanks very much for your videos. Among all the browses in youtube, your lessens are very much specific to me. Also I like the simplicity of your playing which is surely quite smart & mature as well. Furthermore, I am in love with the bass groove with the backing track. Much love (from Bangladesh)🙂
Thank you for this excellent tutorial! If you’re playing on the D string, you would mute the G string with the left index finger while muting the E and A strings with the thumb, right? Thanks again for all you do.
Question, if it would not be too much trouble. I notice that you use the index and middle fingers of the right hand to pluck the strings. Is the ring finger ever used?
Good Job, great advice. Perhaps mention STAND UP when you play bass in a band. (you sit in your bass videos like your watching a movie?) I Force myself to practice with strap and standing. You owe it to your audience to stand while performing and your body will keep time for the rest of the band. My drummer on stage can only see my back however he can predict many of my note changes by watching my "Bass Dance" the way my body naturally moves while playing. If you still find yourself playing bass in your 90's then sit down...
I'm an old fashioned type of guy and I prefer the muted sound that one gets with a double bass, so I generally play with a foam pad under the strings. The foam I use is not particularly dense and the pad is only about a half-inch square throughout its length which I butt up up close against the bridge. However, I'm sure I can hear the string going sharp as the note fades away. I don't think I'm imagining this, so is it something you have experienced using a foam mute?
So so simple, with two tones!!!!! ("and then I do some fills in between!") Ha, I know what you mean, but it are the fills that make this Basslines sounds fantastic, but then you need more notes then just the two!!!!!
Great tutorial ..am kinda old school and on a budget so changing strings every 6 months is Not for me ..I like the warmer tones your get with older strings an I just keep my hands clean and I use a text wipe with alcohol to keep them clean .. Good luck being a sadowsky bass artist!! That's a Good gig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first time I changed bass strings I immediately regretted it. I don't really like that metally sound. It isn't the "boominess" of older strings I like, its the smoothness. I have one song where I like new strings, so I have another bass that I only use for that song. Those strings will last a long time b/c its just that one song. What bums me is that I'll eventually have to change the strings and they'll sound too bright for a while.
I don't use my thumb and keep it on top of the pickup 90% of the time and I play a 5 string and I don't have a problem with strings ringing out as I use my fretting hand to mute so try different ways and see what suits you
Ollie I also rest my thumb on the pickup most of the time and just make sure to mute it with the finger I used to pluck the string in tandom with left hand muting
Hello i have the same amplifier and i have problems getting a nice eq right now im using a pre amplifier so i use the amplifier flat ... it would be nice if you make or show me a tutorial of how you diál the amplifier
Remember it might not be the amp but the room you are in if it's not sound proofed then a lot of sound is gonna become muddy especially with lower frequencies
Oh me, I took you suggestion to record my self playing, well honesty is a bitch, didn't like what heard thanks for the tip I think I got a lot of work to do😝
I play five and six string basses almost exclusively now. I use the "floating thumb" right hand technique for string muting. That is, instead of anchoring on a pick-up or the adjacent string as I travel up and down the strings, the thumb travels with the fingers and rests against the B E and A strings. When playing the high C on my six string I will rest the thumb on the D string, and carefully rest the thumb against the B E and A strings. This, in my opinion is a very effective way to to keep unwanted noise out of your grooves. 👑🎸🎵

"Treat every bass line with respect." What a great quote and excellent advice!
That bass tone is perfection.
I really like your tips and ideas. Even after having played the bass guitar for 35 years, I keep on learning. Thank you, Yonit!

Amazing Yonit
Would that be some kind of string dampener or Capo near the nut?
Nice Bass, which one is it?
Changing strings? Gonna need 2 bolters for this heresy xD

Floating thumb right? Pinky and ring finger for muting on regular finger style is a unnecessary for the right hand
So you don’t have to apply that much pressure when you muting the other strings or do you??
Great Stuff!

It took me some practice to mute droning strings, especially on a 5 string.

Ollie I also rest my thumb on the pickup most of the time and just make sure to mute it with the finger I used to pluck the string in tandom with left hand muting

Nice bass! What is that?
Moniker Zuma, I agree with you! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/uPE1XI3-yyw/видео.html
