    Why put the sauce on top of one layer of cheese? Every pizza I've eaten is layered crust, sauce, cheese.

      I was following the recipe, I'm sure you could put the sauce on the dough. Detroit style pizza has the sauce on top of the cheese, maybe that's where it came from?
