I remember taping this on VHS (still got it somewhere) and thinking this is where they'd made it, gonna blow up huge. They did of course, where it counted; in their own home country -- Canada! 🇨🇦❤️
He was close to Trudeau, even in the tragically hip show Trudeau was there.. with his push with til the end with his aboriginal project. Would have love to see how he would have reacted to that tyrant and a terrible human he is right now to the Canadian nation. Gord, the mand who walks wit the stars, please help us to find our way back to our roots. 😐❤
I miss them so much. Saw them live in 92 at Grafitti’s in Pittsburgh, PA. Where I fell in love with this band. There was about 20people in the place and we had our own private show, IT WAS AMAZING. Went on to see them many times in the 90’s. Mostly in Cleveland, OH. ♥️Miss you Gord
Was having a grand night out at Dow's Lake rideau canal, frozen and nd drove home to watch this legendary performance. Life long hip fan, Notts, Ottawa, Toronto and Kirkland Lake cheers for posting
I saw The Hip the night before the SNL show in Austin, TX at the SXSW convention. Hands down best show I ever saw anyone do, and I saw them a few times (including The Country of Miracles), all in the US. I live in NJ, and I only wish I had seen them in Ontario. I hope Paul, Rob, Gord & Johnny are well, and Gord is resting easy.
Grace too was out in 1994, they were on SNL in 1995. Too bad , they would’ve been really big in the US. Look up the song from the Tragically Hip. It’s called “Grace Too” go in a rabbit hole afterwards.
I didn't know what I was missing out on until I moved to Port Huron, MI a few years ago which is a border city with Sarnia, ON and able to listen to a Canadian rock radio station.
You Americans are missing out on a lot of good tunes. Trooper, Streetheart, Doug and the Slugs, Prism, Max Webster (or Kim Mitchell by himself), The Powder Blues Band, Payolas and The Stampeders to name a few. Just in case you are young or live in a cave. There is also Rush, Loverboy ,Triumph, Noel Young, Red Rider (Tom cochrane) and The Guess Who.
There are bands and then there is a Canadian treasure called The tragically hip. So many good memories with them playing in the background, but I alway heard a hip song come on. So many starry nights. So many bon-fires, so many things and I couldn’t imagine these memories without the Hip in them . I love you guys, You have made so many peoples memories so friggan nostalgic, it’s pure magic, To this day and forever I know our Tragically hip will be there making memories! For all of us! ❤❤❤
Dan Akroyd insisted on having them as the musical guest if he went on with Letterman and they agreed. Hip slayed with their two strange and wonderful songs, and we thought this is it, US will discover and embrace en masse. Not quite, but giant they were nonetheless, led by the shaman bard and warrior poet Gord Downie...
Not very. They're from Toronto. They were popular in Buffalo, Boston, and small towns in the Northeast. I was introduced to them from a friend from Massachusetts. I am a Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Rolling Stones fan. I sincerely choose The Hip over those 3 eternally fantastic bands
Not the best choice of song (as wonderful as it is to a Hip- tuned audience) to a nation of newbies. Not enough to hook the average American unfortunately. New Orleans is Sinking or Blow at High Dough would’ve made better SNL selections. Missed opportunity of what could’ve been.
This was not the song to play on SNL.. I wonder who the $&?! Choose it. Something like “lookin for a place to happen” or even “so hard done by” if playin one off the “newest” album..
I'm from kingston ontario o a lake Across from a famous movie star and they have played out there a few times. With a bunch of NHL? Hockey players and i've been fortunate that my grandfather was a, Influential member in the kingston area which got us access to the shows.
I remember this on SNL and it was huge. Good on Dan Ackroyd for making it happen. Gord was amazing.
I remember taping this on VHS (still got it somewhere) and thinking this is where they'd made it, gonna blow up huge. They did of course, where it counted; in their own home country -- Canada! 🇨🇦❤️
Buried in my attic in a box of vhs tapes! I'm glad The Hip are ours! RIP Gordie
Sure you do
@@hardtimer I'm an amateur hoarder, champ.
@@steve_bal4 right..copy that 10 4 sure whatever
I taped this from my 1st year residence at Western on my vhs. Probably still have it somewhere
too bad the full video of both these performances got taken down
I miss him so much. The world is so different because of him, but because he's not here too. ❤️
beautifully said

He's still missed.
Gone but not forgotten...many thanks and many blessings, Mr. Downey
They were great. I think that there was probably a large Canadian presence in the audience that night.
Remember watching this as a 17 year old then bolting out right after to play midnight hockey and then eat some Johnny’s hamburgers at 3am.
Then you tapped a maple tree, and went to Tims for a cup of Joe, and finished the whole day off with a Labatts Blue
@@drop830Woke up three hours later, in the trunk of a car, cracked another Blue, turned your lamp down low, and read a history of the RCMP.
Gord is living in our minds! Love you always!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Had the privilege to see them several times when I was in high school in the states. What a underrated band! Really good songs, RIP Gord
Nautical Disaster is a gem
One of my favorite Hip songs.
The greatest poet to sting word into music truly the greatest front man to take a stage ever, long live Gord Downie!!!!!
Beautiful song i dedicate this one to my late brother who drowned when i cover it. I miss you Greg. I miss you Gord
I love you so much Gord. I miss you every day.
Pure talent, the whole band was amazing.
I’m in western NY. AMAZING how they never got recognition in US nationwide. One best bands ever hands down.
One of my favorite live recordings of the hip, absolutely crushed SNL that night. Miss ya Gordo!
Saw the Hip many times. RIP Gord Downie.
Their catalog of music is so amazing best band in the world. Gords a true poet. 🙏
Such a major moment in Canadian music history that otherwise went unnoticed.

The hip did Canada proud we've produced many extraordinary musicians for sure but the hip showed the world what it means to be Canadian ✌️

The pride on fellow Canadian Dan Akroyd’s face is felt by us all. We miss you Downie ❤

I was listening to this song today remembering Dan introducing them . We were much younger then .

Gord was a modern day Stompin Tom
One of my favorite song ❤
Sadly missed. ❤
Haunting wonderful song...
They ironically really lived up to their name.
I absolutely love Gord. Hip are my favourite band by FAR..: but why does bro look like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory?🤣
Best drummer 🥁
Brilliant music ❤❤❤
One of the greatest songs.
Miss you guys. Bless you Gord and thank you, was a hell of a ride...

ON THE COAST OF FRANCE!!! dear…
My recording on VHS is gone but this performance was unforgettable.
Miss ya Gord😢
Got goose bumps!
Gord looks so much like Jim Parsons here. Jim Parsons would be perfect to play Gord in a biopic.
Great observation!!!!! ❤ 😮
He also looks like early Dexter too...
Can anyone provide a full performance of this? Please!!
I miss them
Canada night on SNL
🇨🇦💂 Legends! 💂🇨🇦
Miss you Gord
A song that takes awhile to get into and then it becomes a classic. They knew that and they sang it anyway. Uncompromising artistic vision.
Speak for yourself, first I heard it I went bonkers
we got together at a friends place drank a little smoked a little and we were as proud as dan is there
I wonder how much Dan Ackroyd had to do with getting The Hip on that Saturday since he was hosting
Dan pushed to get The Hip on SNL
MY Lord!

Where they find this singer? Maybe add open mic night Mondays at Applebee's?

Best Canadian band ever!! Rip Gordie ❤️🙏🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
😂😂😂not even close. Most overrated band for sure!
Perfect
I know my memory fails me from time time but didn’t The Hip play two songs on SNL? Or did they appear twice?
They also did Grace, Too
Oh God, I'm youTube'ing this now!!❤❤❤
Just think.. our music is from the late 1900s. 😮

Big mistake, wrong songs for the Americans.
And still no one cares! I do like their 1st album. But super over rated band😊
Boring af
0/10
I remember this Sat night like it was yesterday. Still have the VHS recording.
I believe this was the first time Gord said “Where Tragically Hip” opposed to “Fabulously Rich”
Have been there
