I live in Chicago, IL. My first exposure to the Tragically Hip was learning there was a band called “The Tragically Hip” and thinking that is one of the coolest names for a band, ever. I was curious and had to explore the music of this band. What I learned was they lived up to their moniker. Holy crap, what a power house of poetry and rock and roll all mixed together. They toured Chicago on a regular basis and I saw many of their concerts. One show in particular was very memorable. They played a small club called Martyr’s on the Northside of Chicago on August 5, 1998 on a very hot summer night. Martyr’s capacity is about 200-250 people with no air conditioning. It was a sauna inside that room that evening. The windows inside the club were foggy, because it was so hot. I was about three rows from the stage and watched a constant stream of sweat dripping off Gord Downie’s elbow performing that night. They killed it! It felt like they were performing inside a giant stadium in Canada. I loved it and was completely blown away. R.I.P. Gord. You are a legend and the band’s music will last forever

I have just 'discovered' them. Bit of a long story here... Several years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Canada from the UK, my first time leaving the country. I went with a few friends, one of whom had moved to the UK from Kincardine, Ontario. He had one of his mixes on in the rental car and Blow at High Dough came on. It instantly resonated with me and he told me how pretty much revered The Tragically Hip were in Canada. Fast forward to a year or so ago and I was streaming Q107. Grace, Too came on and I instantly recognised the band, from hearing a single song years before. The next day Little Bones came on and I realised that I really had to check them out. I spoke to my Canadian friend and he recommended a few albums to get an idea of them. I'm currently listening to Yer Favourites, and Up To Here. I want to spend a week or so on these before listening to another album. I want to feel and get used to their songs, rather than just give them a single listen. Over the last week I have been checking out live performances, interviews and documentaries about the band and about Gord Downie. I've also been doing a lot of crying. I love Canada and I love its people, warm, friendly, funny and I like the pure "Canada-ness" of the Hip. I love that it is part of Canada's DNA and slightly down about, that being British, I may never 100% 'get' them. But I hope to try.

Some of the references in the lyrics relate to Canadian history, geography, famous authors and authors. Eg Tom Thompson and The Group of Seven [landscape painters]; Canada’s language debate [English vs Quebec]; our hometown’s prison history; a famous murder case, etc. If you like The Hip, you might also like some other Kingston bands like The Headstones [older albums] and The Mahones.

From the east coast of Canada and seen them for the first time live in 95. I was not a fan before the concert at all. I ended up going into town with a friend (lived in the country) to go the concert and we drink a bottle of R&R (look it up another Canadian legend!) and my friend puked all over himself (ps we were 15 lol) and bailed out and couldn't go to the concert. Went by myself and I remember like it was yesterday, walked in the arena and the second I walked in, I heard Gord scream out, They said I am Tragically Hip and holy shit!! Sent shivers all through me. Watch the whole concert in aww, he owned that whole crowd, everything he did, they hung off it. Seen them tons of times after that, almost yearly. How big is Tragically Hip and Gord Downie to Canada, they stopped airing of the Olympics to show their last concert on CBC. Every city in the country had huge outdoor viewing parties. And I will never deny this, I cried like a little bitch when he left the stage because we all knew he didn't have long to live.

Heard the news headlines and what is that I hear, Gord has gone into the mists of time, I know he will be well received by all those waiting to meet him again and the others who will meet him for the first time and only heard his music on the wind, who will welcome him to the ages of our past with love and respect and peace, glad the pain is gone, singing loudly all the music we here in our own places in time. Peace

I saw The Hip in Trafalgar Square on Canada Day in 2013 and was instantly hooked!
When they announced the final ever concert I rushed home that night and watched the live stream and got so emotional... I couldn't get why but everyday I listen to at least 1 of their songs and I understand why
