Skyrim: 5 Things They Never Told You About The Soul Cairn

- Skyrim is a game of numerous spooky locations, from dark caves to ominous Nord ruins. However, no place The Elder Scrolls 5 allows us to visit is perhaps quite as unnerving as the "Soul Cairn". A mysterious plain of Oblivion where the souls of those who have been soul trapped are doomed to spend all of eternity. We get an opportunity to explore this place during Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC and may just be Skyrim's most interesting location. So today we'll be taking a look at five things you (probably) never knew about the Soul Cairn of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Theory: Nate made a deal with the ideal masters and he got tricked and is now forced to make Skyrim videos until his death
Nate: Please give me an undead army
Masters: We shall, so long as you make Skyrim videos until Elder Scrolls 6 comes out
Nate: Shouldn’t take too long, soon I shall conquer Denmark
actually, Nate tricked the Ideal Masters. they made a deal that they would get his soul when he ran out of content to make for a video game, but he chose Skyrim, so he'll never run out content and thus never die
FiftyStates interesting theory mortal 😏

Last time I was early M'aiq wasn't a liar.
Last time I was this late, Valerica already escaped the Soul Cairn and Durnehviir is still trying to figure out how to get the cobwebs out of his ears.
But I'm not too late, however. If I were, Durnehviir would have discovered the recent invention of cotton swabs, yet inevitably would still have found himself in confusion as to how to accompish such a feat. On the subject of the bonemen, one time I was running through the soul cairn and that lightning struck nearby me. I just happened to be looking at where the lightning hit and it hit three souls. Then boom they turned into two bonemen and a mistman.
Well the idea of Necromancers creating a realm to store souls for later use makes sense.
I noticed that. Also the dragon uses lightning to summon them.
That's probably because you activated a soul gem lightning spire. It turns a great/grand soul gem into a black one in exchange for the spire summoning 3 bone enemies for you to face off against.
Only people without souls can come with you to the Soul Cairn? Would that include Nazeem, M'aiq, and the Courier?

I have a mystery that I haven't seen you mention before;
What is the dwemer object in hrodulfs House basement? What was the noise hrodulf was talking about?
That's an interesting idea, but I don't think that there is an answer to that, what the machine is. What are dwemer machines in other ruins? Nobody knows. The voice is just the machine running, as they still run after so long time.
@@Mysticpaw True, this one just seems like a massive focal point though, with the chair set up looking at it and it sending hrodulf into madness, there must be an answer somewhere! 😂
Per UESP: "The cause of madness that came from the Dwarven machinery was likely Dwemer tonal architecture. Depending on the usage, machines such as Dwarven tonal resonators can induce a deep calmness, profound pleasure, or paranoia and terror, with the latter being what Hrodulf experienced."
Yeah I saw that when I first stumbled across hrodulfs place, but I can't shake this feeling there's more to it, it's a massive focal point as if it did something and no matter what anyone's done so far, nothing happens!

And can Serana still fallow you if she cure herself from vampirism?
Edit: Serana will still fallow you into the soul cairn if cured
Good questions I hope he brings them up
It depends if you’re spouse is a follower or not and yes Serana will still be your follower if you cure her.
The first guy to get soul trapped must have been confused as hell
I thought you offered the soul gem to the ideal masters as payment, not in tamriel. Which is why you are permanently debuffed in the cairn until you find your soul gem in the cairn in a chest and restore yourself.
Wait, is this a thing??
@@dongadson1099 yeah, if you splice your soul into the gem rather than turn, you get a permanent debuff in the cairn, but in one of the chests under the big gems thought to be the ideal masters, you'll find your soul gem and itll remove the debuff
Haven’t recently played Skyrim in the soul cairn, I noticed that when you go to retrieve Arvak’s skull, there are a several normal looking souls that get hit with lightning and are then turned into mistmen. I think it’s possible that the ideal masters turn people into them via the lightning
What I liked was the ghost busters 2 Easter egg. A ghost in the soul cairn will say Death is but a door , time is but a window, I will be back. This line is spoken by Vigo the Carpathian in the 80's film.
Here's my theory about the souls that end up in the Soul Cairn: they're the souls used for recharging weapons and staves. After being soul-trapped, the soul resides in the gem until used. The act of using the soul gem is a form of energy transferrence, from the gem to the item, and once that energy is expended to recharge the item, the "husk" of the soul goes on to the Soul Cairn because it has been corrupted...used, if you will...and cannot be retrieved by Arkay to go on to their afterlife.
This is why there are so many souls there, and why there is such a variety of "good" and "bad" souls. The "bad" ones would have been bandits, necromancers, evil people in general, and they may be the ones who become mistmen, wraithmen, etc. The "good" people -- the ones who were doing no harm to anyone but who unfortunately became soul-trapped -- may be the ones who have retained the semblance of who they were in life. Serana tells us that the Ideal Masters have an insatiable appetite for souls -- they feed off whatever energy is left. Perhaps in the process of feeding, they also create more of the guardian denizens that inhabit the Soul Cairn.
Also; the part of the Soul Cairn we are permitted to traverse is hemmed in by a energy barrier we can't penetrate. It's possible that barrier is fed by the souls of monsters and animals who were soul trapped. It's also possible this isn't the only section of the Soul Cairn that exists; it's just the part we are allowed to go through, because it's where Valerica is, and she opened the portal to this area with her own blood.
Yes
Only Black Soul gems go there, those cows you see and Arvak? They got Black Soul gem.
Well wildlife in Nirn have white souls and can be soul trapped in regular soul gems, tho when that soul gem is used, the white souls are able to safely pass to the afterlife(Unless they are trapped in a Black Soul Gem)
Men and mer have black souls and can only be captured in a black soul gem, and when the black soul gem is used, they are sent to the soul Cairn
The game literally says this for the most part. But it's not from gem to weapon. Its from gem to ideal masters. Who then recharge your weapon in exchange for the soul.
My hypothesy has been that while standard soul gems use the soul as fuel for recharging or creating an enchantment, this is not the case for Black souls. Multiple sources talk about the Ideal Masters making deals with necromancers, and considering the difficult ways to even get a black soul gem, I think there is an inherent part of a deal involved. When you use a black soul, it actually goes to the Soul Cairn for the Ideal Masters, and they send back as much magic as a grand soul. I assume the black soul gems are directly connected to the Cairn.
Based on the fact we find such souls of trapped people in the Cairn, not turned into sword enchantments, I think the black souls might be far more valuable than a grand soul, but very few know how to use them, or if the Masters are strong enough they obscure it. Daedric princes make deals to get humanoid souls, Ideal Masters can have prospective necromancers collect them. And everything points to the Masters as ripping people off.

It's probable that those Orsimer and their killed Dragon has a lot to do with Durneviir. Basically, at some point between when Durneviir made his deal and when he was assigned\imprisoned, Ideal Masters tried to uphold their side of the bargain. They have found a Dragon in the process of being slain and kidnapped the whole party to try to capture poor Dragon's Soul. That made them realize that they can't capture Dragon Souls at all. And they quickly found a solution: to assign Durneviir to an undead vampire thus killing 2 birds with one stone. Vampire got a powerful warden while Durneviir request was postponed indefinitely.
But they captured his soul.... so not true although.. cool thought
On my most recent playthru, in the soul cairn i discovered a dragon skel with a whole human skel in it's rib cage with it's arm outstretched as if it was trying to crawl out. Kinda interesting lol
Your mod makes the Soul Cairn look rather light and friendly. For such an evil place I prefer the much more terrifying and scary look like in the Vanilla game, it makes you want to flee every minute you are staying there, I think that was, what Bethesda wanted us to feel. Your Soul Cairn looks much more friendly and inviting, asks us to stay a little longer to explore the place further. Love your videos!!!

2 seconds ago!!! last time i was this early, "They" were still telling their secrets 🤔
I had my own theory that the Wrathmen, Bonemen, and Mistmen were the results of black souls that were already transported to the Soul Carin (via soul trap) but the soul gem that contained their soul had been used. This would help explain why they have no control over their actions anymore and, at least in Battlespire, sometimes apologize for their actions

I've never been this early I either catch them months late or a couple hours. I love your content Nate and it's been especially helpful during the stay at home order
BONEMENS were actually people who are WILLING TO BE SOUL TRAPPED.
I read this somewhere from the Internet but I can't prove if its really true.
They are Undead that serve the ideal masters:
"The Boneman's Oath
We die.
We pray.
To live.
We serve.
The Master's Voice
You swore.
To Serve.
Your Lord."
"Would you enter our service, mortal?"
"Put off your mortal garments, and stand naked in the spirit. Your stained tablet must first be washed white by the fires of mana."
"Seek the twin Fingers of Life in the Chapel of Love. Stand upon the pedestal and bathe yourself in the manabeams. The corruption of the flesh shall fall away, and the spirit shall be revealed in its glory. Then may you stand before us and serve for eternity in peace and joy."
"You must die and be born again. The form your spirit may take afterwards varies. You will have seen the servants of our realm."
"You stand within the precincts of the Soul Cairn, an otherworldly refuge dedicated to peace, love, eternal rest and harmony. You stand before one of its Makers, whose name is so exalted you may not even speak it. You walk among its servants, who have pledged themselves in service to us, and who in reward have been gifted with life eternal and the peace that passes all mortal understanding
Some of this is from the Book of Life and Service.
I'd always assumed the soul cairn was once an area of nirn that the ideal masters removed and took to oblivion so they didn't have to worry about stealing land from any daedra.
The land mass had been a battlefield in the war with the dragons which explains all the dragon and human skeletons, they were just taken there along with the land and possibly all the architecture was already present too.
The mistmen etc are just the ideal masters taking those bones and making creations out of them, they're all black like they'd been burned in dragon fire
I love this theory so much.
The ideal master do actually turn regular souls into mistmans
Maiq went to the Soul Cairn once, he saw many Nazeems...
I was literally just killing that pesky mountain troll to get to high hrothgar when I got the notification
Something that would make the soul cairn cooler would be if you could meet all the animals and people you soul trapped in there.
Luckily animals and other creatures that have white soul gems dont go to soul cairn, their energies are released after depleting the crystal. Thats why black gems are sinister, when you soultrap an sentient creature their souls are directly sent to soul cairn while you keep the energies in the crystal and their souls will never move onwards. only mercy they can have if their souls are oblirated from existence by slaying them in the soul cairn.
Who are "They" and why are "They" withholding this valuable information!
The fact that your Skyrim videos still have this much traction makes me so happy. Skyrim is truly one of the greatest games of all time.
This is unrelated but I just found out playing skyrim that if you read the dragon scroll in the ancestor glade it takes you to the time wound on the throat of the world if you are up to the corresponding mission which is when you have to read the scroll then fight alduin on the mountain

Daedric princes can't create life. That power is exclusive to the divines. Daedra can only copy, manipulate and twist already existing creatures/items.
For example; Moleg Bal's vampires, Mora's seekers(mutated people).
Daedra like Dramora and Scamps only serve those princes because they need somewhere to respawn if ever defeated. If you want to know the rest check out the elder scrolls creation story.
Wait, how is that possible? The Daedra, which have like 70% of their power left, can't create life? Only the Aedra, who are at 5% power, can do that? They're the same race. Therefore the Daedra must be strong enough to create life if the severely weakened Aedra can.
@@asherdevin like I said check out the creation story, only those who participated in the creation of nern were the only ones who have the power of creation, nern is that creation but the devines lost alot of power doing so.
Since the daedra never participated in the creation of nern they still hold their full power.
That's what separates them, before the creation of the world they were the same race but after the birth of nern that's where they diverge.
I know this is a weird subject to rap your head around but when you look into the creation story of the elder scrolls it becomes much simpler.
@@Billion_1 That's what I said? That still doesn't explain why the Daedra, who are at full strength, can't create life just because they didn't fall for Lorkahn's trap.

Ok, I know you don't do videos about one singular topic, so I wanna bring something up here.
How does Azura fit in with the Soul Cairn? We know that her Daedric Artifact, Azura's Star, is essentially a Grand Soul Gem. However, it's the unique properties of the Star that makes me curious.
1. It's reuseable, something unique to it and would imply that the souls put in there may still have parts of them remaining inside. I say this because a soul usually fills the entire gem with energy, almost like it's a liquid. Could that explain why when we enter the Star there are Dremora protecting the current inhabitant? Maybe they are pieces of souls the Star uses as bodyguards of sorts.
2. It has it's own space/realm. We know that when the soul is trapped it goes to the Cairn, and the energy it leaves during this transfer is what powers gems. So why is there almost a mini-realm inside the Star? Are souls trapped in here treated differently? Maybe they are allowed to rest by Azura, who we know as one of the few Princes who aren't inherently evil.
Whatever the answer is, only Azura knows, and she... isn't telling.

Maybe for the Sovengard vid, this is a bit of a what if, if it is possible to soul trap the people we can meet in Sovengard like Ulfric or Legette Rikke, could we still see them in Sovengard before the final battle, or will they be nowhere to be found, and even be instead located in the Soul Cairn?
You gotta do that to em?
The way Nate says the elder scrolls 5 skyrim makes me shiver everytime, so iconic!
I think I have found everything and every soul in the Skyrim Soul Cairn. One of them will tell you about the mist-men and bone-men. As I recall he said something along the lines of "Those who lose themselves loose themselves completely in this place". Indicating the ghosts have remained that way because they cling to something from their lives.
Bruh it’s only been 5 minutes why am I here 💀💀
40 likes in 30 seconds. It must be an awesome feeling to know you’ve made your way on RUclips. Bravo man, been following since the beginning. You make great videos 💯
Why is everyone so confused about bones and stuff being in the Soul Cairn? There are many different kinds of physical doorways into oblivion realms, THE PLAYER HAS TO USE ONE! It's not hard to theorize at all.
Here's an idea; The orc tribe was defending themselves from a random dragon, during the battle the dragon Shouted out a portal to the Soul Cairn likely to escape or bring out reinforcements cuz it was getting it's ass wooped. The orcs either followed or forced the dragon into the portal, there they finished it off but were trapped and eventually died, leaving their souls to continue wandering. Or maybe it was the orc's wise woman and her alchemy that opened a similar portal to Valerica's before they were interrupted by a dragon. Maybe there was a third party of necromancers that just teleported them all away.
It's fucking fantasy. Use your imagination.
The Merchant inside the SC tells you that the Soul Trap that was placed on him brought the Wagon, the Wares, the Horse and the gold to the SC, as well as his physical carcass, so it is reasonable to say that Soul Traping can bring inanimate objects into the Soul Cairn.
