The bare wood is exactly the same. Fiddles are usually set up with a lower and less arched bridge. Fiddles usually have a shorter looking tailpiece with 4 micro tuners - whereas violinists usually prefer to have a micro tuner only on the e string). Fiddlers often play without a shoulder rest where violinists almost never do. But all fiddles begin with a violin maker. Many players who learned violin first and later turned to fiddle playing will usually keep their original setup and play fiddle music on violin.
Ramble warning***I always use a Wolf shoulder rest! Ha! I love playing these tunes. Been playing them since 2002. Anyway, I would dare say (admiringly) that Zoe Conway is a ‘fiddling violinist’. A ‘fiddlist’. A ‘viddler‘. You can tell she’s rooted in Irish music but has classical foundations as well…More noticeably than most fiddlers that I’ve heard. However It’s a wonderful combination. But the truth is many “fiddlers”, such as myself, don’t play in such a formal fashion. Remember, Riverdance music was composed on the piano, by Bill Whelan, & it’s not quite the same as trad music. Many higher notes; shifting to third position in the live show. It’s easy to play any range on the piano after all. These tunes are absolutely daunting when you read the sheet music. It’s taken me nearly 20 years to feel MODERATELY confident playing them! Most traditional Irish music does not involve third position & rarely second position. There are exceptions. I wouldn’t call that lazy musicianship though. Fiddlers bring their own unique style & sound that is truly an organic process, compared to classical music… Also the piece Zoe is playing here? In the middle, the tune alternates 6/8 and 4/4 every other measure. And it’s not even consistent. So I would call it classical/Broadway music in the VEIN of traditional Irish music LOL. As far as fiddles set up differently than violins? I just adjust tuning sometimes to sound better. Half a step to a whole step flat sounds so much better, so much richer. And makes it easier on the strings. Sometimes instead of GDAE I will raise the G so it’s ADAE. This is good for droning in the key of D or A. As long as I’m playing with other people that don’t mind doing the same. Or I play along with the Amazing Slow Downer app so I can play everything in a different tuning! It’s a wonderful app especially when certain musicians & bands record in E-flat tuning; or are just slightly off in their own tuning. Sigh. Guess I’ll practice now.haha
Absolutely amazing xxxx

Q. whats the differece between a fiddle and a violin?
The violin sings, the fiddle dances.
