I am a mere male but when I look at all these wonderful dancers I cannot understand why you say she is the best? Yes she is the lead but when I look at all the other girls they are making the same moves as she does and are all very good. Same with the men. What differentiates between a very good dancer and a great one?
@@happyolddude I don't know the fundamentals of this type of dancing so I couldn't tell you. You would have to ask Flatley about that. It might be partly psychological, since she is the lead dancer. To me she is taller than average and maybe a little more statuesque, with rock solid, straight up posture. I would guess that she might have had some classical ballet training. She makes demanding dancing look easy. That is my take on it.
Jean Butler is an Irish princess warrior.👑 🇮🇪 I love video so much. I used to watch this Riverdance video on VHS over and over again as a little girl and as an adult woman continue to dance and clap in joy watching Jean perform this gorgeous dance. ❤️🇮🇪❤️
It’s just mesmerising, and Jean Butler will always be the best because she was the lead when I fell in love with Riverdance, no-one will or could ever replace her in my opinion
I though Jean's dress was plenty fancy. I really like it so beautiful. To quote Rod Stewart "You Wear It Well". And she did. I saw this as a child many time and I wanted this dress so much.
@@scoutz0rs as a competitive irish dancer i think it looks much better!! 😅 i definitely love the all tan, makeup and bling and traditional is always so pretty too
I have the 1995 years performance memorized. I watched it so much as a kid, I can tell just by listening, or just seeing a part of the show, whether or not, I’m watching the 1995 performance. I would practice with books under my arms, and dance up and down the living room, trying to dance like Jean Butler and the others. I wanted nothing more....but now, I’m too old.
I was taught to walk as a child by these films and copied michael flatleys flatleys, jean butler and bernadette flynns steps perfectly even took irish clogging classes I've been strengthening my ankles to hopefully dance again
Riverdance carved out its own niche, something that rarely happens to this extent. Funny, I remember seeing it on TV and thinking, "Wow!" Riverdance held a particular place in my memory and heart for just how innovative it was: new, fresh, something from the Isles, a magical place. It was live and in person! Very grateful, I am so thankful for the few times I was able to catch it on TV back then.
Jean Butler is an American of Irish descent like Michael Flatley. Riverdance really awakened interest in America of Irish culture. Back then i thought Butler was one of the most beautiful women I had ever seen and I'm sure she is still beautiful.
my grandma had 3 movies on vhs, pretty woman, Mrs. doubtfire and this. I wasn't allowed to watch pretty woman, so I ended up watching this 50 times and dancing to it the whole time. I was born in 1993 so I couldn't have been that old.
Joanna M my grandma also only had this and ET, and I was so scared of ET so I watched this all the time. I even ended up doing 4 years of Irish Step Dance.
hahahah i love this comment. my aunt and uncle had hundreds of movies on vhs and I STILL ended up watching this 50 times as a kid and dancing along with it!
Just saw this comment. Among Americans of Irish decent we say Irish. I am from a family with the famous O'. Glad i could teach you something Humberto. Stop splitting hairs:(
@@humba1957 as is Michael flatley. He is from Chicago. Colin Dunn the great dancer who took over from flatley is from Birmingham England. Great art is universal.

Jean Butler always reminded me of my mom! These women don't beat around the bush. When I would watch Riverdance as a child, I just felt like Jean had this powerful stage presence that demanded your attention, but always in the most classy extraordinary way! Lmao (My mom is part Irish with the red hair as well.)

I was blessed and privileged t o see Jean Butler and Michael Flatley dancing together. Oh my world! God help me! In my humble opinion such a performance cannot be repeated. God bless you Jean and Michael!
Jean hated dancing with Flatley. He was a very self-serving, selfish, egotistical dancer who only wanted the spotlight on himself. He also intimidated and bullied the Riverdance dancers. Jean has spoken about how she much preferred dancing with Colin Dunne as she felt a connection with Colin, and she also believes that Colin Dunne was a much better dancer than Flatley. Flatley is very much disliked in Ireland.
I remember when I first saw her dancing on stage in the videos. (I wish I could have been honored by seeing her in person.) I wonder why they changed Jean's dress from this delicately layered lace to flashy purple in later versions. It looks good on her and matches the theme of the song.
Lace was considered a royal material because it costed so much to produce and only those who really knew how to do it were allowed to do for royalty. Purple is also because it was a rare color and came from a certain animal in a certain place and people now only see it as a royal color besides red
Прекрасный номер, но мужская партия уж очень напоминает советский танец" яблочко" в постановке Игоря Моисеева. А вообще замечательно, какие ноги, это не ножки как у стола , это именно Ноги , с большой буквы. Приморье, Россия.
The guys are there so the soloist can conquer them. It’s a story. The Countess Cathleen tells the story of the indomitable nature and fiercesomeness of Irish womanhood (and by gods you had better believe it, oh yes, you had better believe it! Scottish womanhood too is pretty fiercesome in fact, it’s a little different but it’s still pretty fiercesome haha), the Countess is left at the end by her companions to face her three tormentors alone, but in the end is able to see them off one by one, asserting her position
I kind of wish Irish dance still looked like this. The things champion dancers do today are basically Olympic athlete good, but there was something nice about the look twenty+ years ago.
Nobody can dance like Jean Butler. Stunning woman.
Totally agree!!!

My favorite dance in Riverdance- presenting a wonderful message about the strength of women! Jean Butler was fantastic!
Ps-the fact that this is named the Countess Kathleen isn’t the reason it’s my favorite-but it didn’t hurt😉
Why can't you just say it is a beautiful piece of dancing without the other gibberish!
Jean's like...like those disks on an air hockey table; she just floats. As if she doesn't even touch the floor. Amazing!
No wigs, no fancy outfits just *raw talent*

nothing wrong with a wig and a fancy outfit lad
Riverdance as a whole is great but Countess Cathleen has always been my favourite. Jean Butler has never been bested.
