    This whole "mongo" thing is mind boggling to me. I skated as a young lad at the end of the '80s/start of the '90s and the term didn't even exist. As a little kid I had and old style scooter that was for transport (more like a bike with big, spoked wheels and hand brakes) and I happened to use my left foot to push and was more comfortable with my left foot in front while free wheeling (ie: regular, pushing "mongo"). This carried over when I started skating so I pushed mongo the entire time I skated when younger, but no one ever commented on it. Last year, at 46, I decided to get back into it and I was confused to see all the videos crapping on about "mongo" and "mall grabbing" (also not a thing way back). This time around I still pushed mongo to start but, I admit, I have learnt to push "normal" as well because I see the merit in quicker setting up when run-up space is limited, but as for all the other reasons, I don't have any issues either way. I think whatever way you are comfortable with will just work. The good thing now is I can push with both so when skating long distances I can alternate and my standing leg doesn't get really tired. :)

      Hey mate well done. I'm ,46 and have just put my feet back on the board. I ride with my son. Similar to you i skated from around 86 to 89 as so many kids did. Anyway i didn't even know the term mongo existed until a week ago. People who skated that way years ago no oned cared. I did notice other better skaters pushed with back foot but i did it that way as it was more comfortable. My theory is if you're right footed then really you should skate natural and left footed goofy with the dominant foot at the back. Im right footed and push with right but as im left handed i stand goofy. As you would playing cricket golf etc. Im gonna try it the other way. Good point about switch too . Yeah i push natural switch because you're going backwards. So i guess to look at it id be skating regular and pushing regular! But to me im going backwards. Anyway long story but as ramp skating was so important back then it didn't matter i guess.

      idk bout mongo but i remember when "Mall Grab" became a thing (29 now) me and the homies would hang at the mall in HS and one year i think 10th grade.. that year the security started telling us "You cant bring boards in here unless u hold it a certain way (i guess to keep from the nose or tail bumping into people had to grab by the trucks) & are going straight to the shop.. couldnt just hang around the mall with boards and shit cause our mall people would try to skate in it. i didnt know or realise this was goin on all over and thought us exclusively got it banned from our mall until i started watchin skating in YT and seen videos about Mall grabbing and made the connection..
      in not 100% as to that being why but that was my experience living thru that.. that was like in 08 to 2011
      i also remember seeing a good amount of videos of skate parts having clips in malls.. u dont see that much anymore either

      I'm a longboarder now that pushes mongo, but i started off skateboarding, ive skated/longboarded for over 7 years now, and when i did skateboard the only disadvantage i actually had was trick setup, that's the only valid point i see on videos talking about mongo being worse, everything else just doesnt apply to me, i can turn while pushing just fine, i can throw down (my back foot is my left foot, and i grab my board with my left hand), when i push i don't stand up straight, and i can go over cracks and dodge people just fine, i'd say if you want to be as efficient as possible with your tricks, change to regular, but most peoples reasons to dislike mongo are not valid.

My muscle memory is getting in the way slightly but I'm refusing to go back to mongo. I'm a month in and it's getting easier. Thanks for the video, mate.

    Great video! I agree that you should not solely push mongo, but I don’t think it’s something that you should never do. I mainly push regular and at times also mongo. I believe it helps my legs not get as tired since I’m switching up the motions they are performing. This video has inspired me to make one of my own on the topic. Something to the effect of when it is ok to push Mongo. Thanks!

    So I skate mongo and I know a few people that do, sometimes when I push my back foot is central of my board and as I put my front foot on, my back foot shifts towards the tail.

  • @SoilentGr33n
    @SoilentGr33n 3 года назад +1

    #5 yeah that's because pushing regular is more like pulling the board while mongo is more like pushing the board. If you can pull something over an obstacle you always have more control than if you push.

  • @truecuckoo
    @truecuckoo 4 года назад +4

    Yeah! Like if you wanna stand on one leg on the board and roll forward, the front foot is feeling so much safer. But I remember one of the cool skaters from when I was a kid pushed mongo. He was more of a ramp guy though, and didn’t push that much, lol. I think with beginners, I would assume (just a hunch) the there are more people standing regular that pushes mongo, possibly partly because they feel that it’s natural to let their dominant foot control the board. I guess more people are right footed. Also I tried telling my girlfriend to step onto the board with the left (front) foot first, and push with the right. But it’s super puzzling to her, because her natural instinct is telling her that with the left foot ON the board, and the right foot RIGHT of the board it feels as if the board is “behind” her, and she has to step up onto the board with heels first, meaning it feels backwards to her, and scary to take a step “back” up onto the board. (She’s a super beginner).

      i skate reg and throw down with my right hand too. I just tried it and i drop my back foot first. sideways on the truck bolts. If i were to put my front foot down first that cool and all but requires the skater to slam the front of the board down with ones foot vs mongo where the back trucks all ready on the ground. its more efficient in mongo. smoother. ever way has ups n down.

    When I used to snowboard, I rode regular. Now I'm starting skateboarding and goofy feels more comfortable. I think it's because I'm used to riding around the city on a scooter, having my right foot on the scooter and pushing with my left foot. So that also feels more stable on the skateboard now. But if it just came to standing on a board and riding, I wonder if I would prefer regular stance. I'm here cause I'm wondering if I should push mongo with my right leg on the board so I end up in regular stance on the board. But maybe not..

    When I started skating I pushed mongo and none of my skate buddies said anything about it for about 2 years and I had no idea it was a bad thing. I was trying a gap one day and it had a very short run-up and I couldn't manage to get the speed for it and one of my friends said "try not pushing mongo". I did and it helped me get enough speed for the gap. Ever since then I started pushing regular (it took a little getting used to, but it wasn't that bad). When I started skating switch a lot after that I also pushed regular and it became a lot more comfortable for me and I became an ambidextrous pusher to where I pushed regular no matter if I was skating switch or not. It actually helped me in the end but had I known earlier on I would have stopped in the beginning. Glad I didn't though.

    The great Mongo Debate. Lots of skaters put video parts out pushing mongo. I pushed mongo too and I think it gave me an unseen bonus, (although I don't do it anymore unless on purpose,) it made me more comfortable on my board in different positions gaining control where some skaters can't do it at all.

    Thanks for doing this video, especially since you've taken that journey of starting on mongo. I tried pushing mongo as an experiment as a kid, and quickly realized it was ineffective and dangerous. The only time mongo could shine would be with a single push for the quick setup of a nose trick.

    Long ago, when I started skating, "Mongo" wasn't a term or concept (and neither was "mall grabbing"). Those were just things people did, and no one cared at all or bothered to label them. Those are both later coinages and preoccupations. I was surprised when I got back into skateboarding and learned people had invented a term for it and had problems with it. I'd advise any young skater not to care or worry about it if that's how the push comfortably--unless/until it somehow impedes whatever they're trying to do. I can say as someone who likes long-distance cruising, being able to push both Mongo and Conformist (regular) is really useful, letting you get a balanced workout and giving each leg a breather while being able to stick with your natural stance.

    I push mongo, (yes...old guy...52). Your demonstrations have your foot waaaay back on the board and I would agree that it looks very unstable. Your old vids of you as a kids, show the same. My foot is more in the middle of the board. If I was younger I would probably try to change. I have noticed with as I get caught up with all the skate terms and tricks...switch, mongo, etc. Most people that get really advanced learn to be ambidextrous to the point that you can push switch or regular equally well and therefore why push mongo. For the rest of us, I am a goofy footed mongo pusher, (with my foot more in the middle of the board). For now, it is what it is. Sorry to my son.... when we go to the skatepark......there goes mongo dad.

      do you cruise around a lot? I started off learning how to longboard then a couple months later picked up a skateboard. I think that might have played a part in why I pushed with the front foot first bc when you're going over rougher terrain you can squat more and use ur leg kind of like a suspension. does mongo affect ur crusing at all?

    • @CarraigButler
      @CarraigButler 3 года назад +1

      @@GoScience123 nah it doesn’t really affect my cruising. personally I like cruising mongo since I can easily ride over bumps with one foot as I’m pushing, even at speed. The main downside is that it takes longer to setup for tricks, which makes it harder to skate certain spots. This is also the first time pushing mongo has been an issue because of the spot and not me. If I were to push regular I wouldn’t have that issue. So i might eventually come to a point where I have to push regular in order to be able to skate more spots. But for now ima push mongo because it’s kinda funny having people look at me like a beginner even though I can still bust out some tricks.

    One thing I'm seeing about your Mongo push as a kid is that you had a lot of trouble with balance and fluidity. Done right, it should look as natural and smooth as "regular" pushing. No offense, but it looks odd in your intro as an adult, too. Your foot seems too far back. Good Mongo pushers tend to have the board foot up further, centering body mass over the board.

    it may be a journey but you can't call a kickflip by any other name that's a designated trick.

    my issue with youtubers talking about mongo skating is that everyone including yourself sucks at mongo pushing. I have like 20 years exp pushing mongo on skateboard and longboard. I should just upload a video and be the first legit mongo pusher who doesnt look like its tier first time pushing. sucks coach told you it was wrong becuz now i skate all ways. Throwing a board down mongo is not how us mongo skaters do it. Running over cracks and cords at low speeds is safer in mongo yet you somehow made the opposite statement. i can skate way faster than most and do it mongo. Mongo skaters have a mean 1 foot Manuel game. mongo pushers can leave foot bent sideways to prepare for tricks quickly. mongo is harder but not worse. because there are more option in mongo skating = more room for error and takes longer to master.

      its that us good mongo skaters luagh at people saying they skate mongo but in reality they dont and never did. The kid footage is laughable. Thats not mongo skating. thats just a kid learning how to ride like a badass and then some instructor killing his creativity and mindset. skating mongo is high IQ stuff so it intimidates many.
