    The head bolt effort was a true challenge. While at work making a repair to a return steam pipe, one and a quarter inch installed in the 1920's two four foot pipe wrenches were the solution for this problem. Long breakers truly a great tool. Thanks for all your efforts while making your channels content. You are a gifted mechanic.

    Nice to see a Champion grader. I grew up in Goderich Ontario Canada where they were made. Eventually the family company was bought out by Volvo and eventually closed down. Thanks for the entertaining videos.

    I've seen worse completely rebuilt back to like new performance.
    Back in the 60's a local sand and gravel operation bought a new Cat 966 loader and that Friday of its first week the operator ran out of fuel right after he loaded the last truck and said screw it and left it there, Ingram falls over the weekend and when the operator shipwreck up at 5 am no loader in sight and it wasn't until he ran his pickup into standing water 10 feet below the scale he realized the pit was totally flooded. They pumped water out for five months before they called it quits after hiring a diver who reported there was an underground stream that flooded the pit the 966 sat there until 37 years later the water started receding and a local heavy equipment mechanic bought it from the town as the owner wouldn't pay taxes after it flooded. Took him by himself just over a year but he completely rebuilt her to like new operation, when he started her up the original hour meter still worked and read 48.6 hours.
    It can be done.

      It's more whether it's worth the cost of time - if you can part it out and make multiples of your purchase price (as it's super low hours on everything) then why plug so much into repairing what's really bad?

      Sounds like what happened here back in the 60s Inna rock quarry. During the day they had a small puddle appear in one corner of the floor. They put a small pump in and everything went back to normal. The next morning when they came back they had over 60 feet of water. The last I heard every piece of equipment is still there but 150 under water, the small puddle went to an underground river.

    Before they started selling the 50/50 blend mix, I used to mix 2/1. Always went a bit heavier on the antifreeze over the water, never had issues going that way.
    Pending on how much someone wants to spend on an overhaul, with it being low hrs and a clean, it might be worth it to someone. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it. Cheers :)

    I worked for a company we did erosion and land restoration. We had a job near Tahoe on US 50. Were a fire went through and was installing erosion control. Had a landing we left equipment parked. Some kids got the cat started and trided to push the equipment over the side of the mountin. Then let the cat go over down all the way into the river. And completely submerged it. Took a lot to retrive it and 3 days to cleat out all the water from everything. But we did get it running and working, and to be honest it ran better after.

    I think the transmission and other cavities where water could get would be the determining factor of whether to fix it or not for me. If the engine is the only issue I think I'd fix it. He only has $5500 in it so if he fixes the engine and puts another 10k in it he still has a nice machine for under 16k. The electrical system would come into play though if it has been submerged. That can get expensive.

    me and my dad just bought an old austin western motor grader at an auction that had been sitting in the same place for 25 years for 25 bucks. we spent a week and a half working on it. got it to turn over with the starter. got the injectors unstuck and got it running and today we got it driving and got all the hydraulics moving. next we have to get some usable tires on it and we are gonna call that good to drive home. clean it up a bit put some new paint on it change some hoses and a fresh coat of paint. then try to put it to work

We were going to trade the 740 on the 730, but they frankly offered an insulting trade in value. The 720 was really sweet to run in a small parking lot. Sadly, that one was the one to go in a round of down-sizing.

    • @vtwinbuilder3129
      @vtwinbuilder3129 4 года назад +1

      Jim Wesselman some do their own but for the most part they really don’t do a lot of preventative maintenance. A lot of times they are doing their own scheduled services in house so it’s never getting a fresh set of eyes on it until a 3rd party is called in for repairs that the customer can’t do on their own. Which ironically is like you said, usually due to lack of maintenance.
      That said most of these farms he’s working for aren’t small operations, they have employees just like other companies and having worked on equipment like this myself I know that the operators are often judged on productivity and aren’t about to be without their tractor or forklift unless they absolutely have to. There’s a lot a play.
      Most small farming operations are pretty good about being on top of maintenance because it directly effects their pocketbooks when it breaks down so it behooves turns to take care of it and make it last also its usually the owner of the equipment is who is operating it and that has an effect as well. They are more likely to shut the machine they own down if it makes a funny noise or gets a warning light because it is their equipment.

    Its very weird that you would think a Government Drpt mechanic would be up to speed and know what anti freeze does which is why I guess its better not to call it anti freeze in ads for the stuff here in Australia of course we mainly use it because modern aluminium alloy engines need an anti corrosive and lubrication of bearings and stopping rubber seals from hardening but also mainly here its to raise the boiling point but you would really think any mechanic would ask why all cars come with green red or blue stuff in their radiators alloy engines really need that anti corrosive but as usual a good video great to watch

  • @prjndigo
    @prjndigo 4 года назад

    If it has a frost-protection rig that automatically opens at low near-freezing temps to DUMP the coolant (like diesel locomotives do) then having just water in it makes sense. That way you're not risking pollution by antifreeze. It *can* cause damage to seals if they're using chlorinated water or some other variant of non-neutral coolant water but overall it's far far safer environmentally. If the unit is used near live water works then not having antifreeze in it is a requirement.

    All the impact from the gun was getting absorbed by the spring torsion in the long bolts. There's no substitute for a good old knuckle bar. Give me a big enough lever and I'll move the world ; )

    DAMN! they must have pressure washed the hell out of that thing to get it to look that clean if it had been under that much water.
