I found your channel wanting to know how to rebuild a 7.3 diesel and learned a lot of things I had no knowledge of prior to watching all those videos. I didn't realize the work involved in the process of it all and realize now I will leave my 7.3 rebuild up to the professionals. Thank you for the great videos.
If you really wanna know how to rebuild an engine your gonna have to just do it. Might take you a while like it would me but you will never know if you don’t try
Great videos. Reminds me of some good days working heavy equipment in the mountains in spring, summer , and fall. The scenery, sounds and smells of the forest, diesel engines, rattling clanking squealing tracks, hydraulics, and earth giving way to steel, I miss that stuff. I don't miss the winters at all; icy roads on steep grades, frost on the windshield, frozen fingers sticking to cold metal, dropping expensive tools into 4' of snow - never to be scene again, getting stuck in the middle of no-where overnight and nearly freezing to death, and wet cold snow soaking through everything and chilling to the bone, etc. Just some tricks: some long bolts with heads cut off and end tapered and slotted with a thin cut off wheel for removal with a flat blade screwdriver make good inexpensive installation alignment pins. Even better is double ended thread studs made from bolts. Double nut the end and use a ratchet wrench to remove. Put the clutch discs on the alignment shaft and put everything into the pilot bearing at once; absolutely insures it is in all the way. Never-seize on the splines and pilot stub make the alignment shaft easier to pull out after torquing the pressure plate bolts. Compressing the pressure plate (springs) is almost a must-have and I wouldn't try installing it any other way. A rack of various length and size "bungee cords" on the truck is useful for tying all the wiring and hoses off and out of the way. Rigging up a solvent washer in the service truck is worth it. Run the parts washer sump dry with a 1" return hose and filter screen and put the 12V recirculating pump in a sealed 5 gallon pail of mineral spirits. A brush with solvent hose supply is better than just a hose an normal brush. Beats bags of rags and cans of brake clean most of the time. I couldn't work without a solvent washer now. I also have a solvent sprayer that works off an air line to suction feed and spray clean solvent to wash off parts I can't remove.
Growing up with my dads service truck as a teenager was incredible . He had a bolt supplier that stocked his bolt bins monthly with common bolts and electrical connectors. KIMBALL was the company. He also did AG work. I remember my first HD clutch install very well. I did not realize the pressure plate came with the tension bolts for the install !! Got everything put together and the clutch would not release 😩 I was 19 or 20yrs old at the time. Called my dad and he knew right off what it was !! Thankfully I was able to remove them through an inspection cover with a wrench a 1/4 turn at a time !!! I never forgot to check again !! I am shocked that you do not have supply beens !! The new truck will open up a lot of room and I am sure a lot of sleepless nights thinking about it 😂
Worked as a mechanic myself and i know the good feeling you get after you put a lot of hard work in to a job and every thing works right after. You had a difficult job their Warren and you did great work with what you had at hand. You should get your service truck right before you start using it as you do not need any trouble with it you have enough work to do every day. Excellent Video.
mr stihl would you charge by the hour for a job like this i run into a lot of these jobs but there's no set rate for this style repair i am not young 43yrs old but got out of the welding game after 25 yrs started when i was 14 yrs old so now i run a tractor repair and auto shop how do you charge labor on tractors by the hour what i see? what are your thoughts and thk you

Very impressed it can be time- consuming finding a simple Bolt in the field. improvise like you said I'm sure you'll have everything you can think of on the truck before long.👍
for things like holding that filter housing back out of the way during the re-install i use zip ties to hold them back; since it's not a "forever" thing, only temporary i find they work quite well. then cut it off to release it when your past the point of needing it held anymore. nice work on everything!

Warren you probably know this . A n old timer showed me a trick to get a pilot bearing or bushing out if you don't have a puller. Just fill up behind bearing with grease an get a shaft or drift that fits close to size of inside of bearing. Place shaft in inside of bearing an hit shaft it will hydraulic the bearing forcing it out. To continue you keep filling it up with grease an hit on shaft tell bearing is out. I can't tell how many times this trick has bailed me out.
That wasn't a sealed bearing on the pilot for this grader, so in this case it wouldn't work. There is nothing to stop the grease coming out through the bearing as the grease is packed in and the shaft is hit in .
Glad to see i'm not the only 1 to talk to myself when repairing things, come on baby is my most used 1 followed by another word beginning with b thats not quite as nice lol. Cant wait to see the new truck out and about.

Used a piece of 3/4” round stock and grease to force pilot bearing out of my ‘79 F250. I still own this truck that I bought new in October of ‘78. It has had the shit worked out of it hauling cattle and hay. My wife and I dated in this truck.

I have a homemade set of guide studs I made about 50 years ago for alignment of components. You don’t have to remove them until the bolts are started unlike screw drivers.

I ultimately realized there was no future there for an electrician and moved to Denver. I returned to California a licensed journeyman and licensed master. Returning to California (east County San Diego) was a mistake but now I am retired in the gorgeous Sonoran Desert north and west of Tucson. I love it here. Like there it is farm land abutting desert. Meth takes it's toll here though, too.

Like you, I dislike using gloves when wrenching. But when i'm packing a bearing or using antiseize or anything messy like that, i'll use rubber gloves.
just a thought.... i watch ron pratt's videos, he runs a towing service out in scott, missouri. he sets up a gopro mounted to his rotator boom & captures frm up high... also plaza towing out in palm springs/indio/palm desert.... maybe setting up a camera up on your hydrophilic boom???
I got that same bearing puller. Man the day I bought that was a frustrating one. Figured out on a chrysler 3.7 v6 they have a pilot bushing for automatic. Most autos the snout on torque converter just goes into end of crank. Old motor was locked up. Had to remove the crankshaft to get the torque converter bolts out because the replacement motor of course came out of a manual truck. I had used cut off wheel to cut out old bushing and then on new motor the pilot bearing woluld not come out so I had to go to get the tool.
Need some long bolt with head cut off to slid clutch onto cut a slot in them for s screw driver but once you put other bolts in the stud bolts usually come out with your fingers
Nice to work in a secluded place sometimes. I gave up being a mobile plant fitter because of construction sites with assholes asking me how long would I be every 10 minutes. Working in the shitty British weather didn't help either.
Hey Warren, if you are fitting a paper gasket that can be moved/destroyed if it moves during assembly, rub some greas on both sides till it permiats the gasket paper, should make life a lot easier, plus if it ever has to come off in the future it wont be stuck to either surface.

Oh, I just meant that I was taught to pack and scrape it in, with decent pressure against your palm to force the grease through, as I'm sure you were too.
I have watch hours of your work, so I knew you had mad skills. But after watching you repair the clutch on the road grader, out in the boonies, up on a mountain top, I was amazed! How did these customers find you to start with? How do they know you can do all these repairs on everything, anytime and anywhere? Just know it’s not the Yellow Pages!
I have been a heavy diesel mechanic for fifty six years and I noticed that the left rear tyre has a different tread pattern, the four tyres on the rear need to be all the same size and type otherwise it chops the hell out of the drive chains in the trunnion box.
Could you make a man-basket to suspended from your crane? Can lay flat and lower yourself over items like the pressure plate and can have both dads free and not worry about balancing in awkward back wrenching positions
Never did this sort of work. I worked on a test stand, setting up big compressers. We always kept various sized bolts with the heads cut off. Worked great on some heavy parts on coupling guards.
Just let this here when I have to F around with gasket I spray them with the gasket adhesive from Permatex stuff work go for me. At lease it hold everything in place the time you install.
IS the Grader CLUTCH SLIPPING Still.. the 3 pressure plate Nuts need to be adjusted to get the correct preload of the pressure plate on the discs and release finger height. so it will release. if you have 3 discs.. you probably need 3/4 inch of compression of the pressure plate can use up all the friction material. this is why you need to use 3 bolts to pull the pressure plate up/compressing the cover springs to get it to bolt down.. the cover height set up is in the manual a few pages AFTER THE installation section you were reading from.. i linked it on the grader clutch removal video..
@@chenderson4969 there are several pages on adjusting the pressure plate height in the cover on the bench with the flywheel removed . I have seen this issue before several times . Caging just allows it to be assembled. Without needing to fight the pressure plate . Have you held a cover against a single disc and flywheel. There is usually about a 1/4" gap above the flywheel before the bolts suck it down. . With a multi disc clutch it's almost a quarter inch per friction disc or it will slip. That 3 disc clutch should have 5/8 to 3/4". Maybe I'm wrong.

I actually enjoy it most of the time , but you sure have to be careful you don't get hurt or you could be in service trouble.
The best ting about packing bearings, the job is going back together and the new grease cleans your hands up nice.

Use a loaf of bread
Yeah bread works even better than grease. Especially Some thing like plain old white bread.

They kind of look disproportionate to the bed , but once you use one you don't care what it looks like.

That only works with a sealed bearing, which this isn't, the grease would just come through between the balls.
When you took it on the test drive up that narrow road, all I could think was "How's he gonna turn the sumbitch around?!" 😂.

That's how I was taught to pack them almost 50 years ago on taper as well as ball bearings. Worked then, works now.

That sounds a lot like the area I live in. Don`t forget dirty in the crankcase, or in the cooling system.

I have been a heavy diesel mechanic for fifty six years and I noticed that the left rear tyre has a different tread pattern, the four tyres on the rear need to be all the same size and type otherwise it chops the hell out of the drive chains in the trunnion box.

Could you make a man-basket to suspended from your crane? Can lay flat and lower yourself over items like the pressure plate and can have both dads free and not worry about balancing in awkward back wrenching positions
I would have used a couple of 1/4 drive extensions instead of the screw drivers but if it works it's the right way
Never did this sort of work. I worked on a test stand, setting up big compressers. We always kept various sized bolts with the heads cut off. Worked great on some heavy parts on coupling guards.
I would be concerned about the pilot bearing without seals! Grease getting on the friction surface and clutch dust getting into the bearing.
Just let this here when I have to F around with gasket I spray them with the gasket adhesive from Permatex stuff work go for me. At lease it hold everything in place the time you install.
If you have a good reliable clean up shop local get them to give a bid on cleaning the truck and bed up. Cheaper than you doing it.
IS the Grader CLUTCH SLIPPING Still.. the 3 pressure plate Nuts need to be adjusted to get the correct preload of the pressure plate on the discs and release finger height. so it will release. if you have 3 discs.. you probably need 3/4 inch of compression of the pressure plate can use up all the friction material. this is why you need to use 3 bolts to pull the pressure plate up/compressing the cover springs to get it to bolt down.. the cover height set up is in the manual a few pages AFTER THE installation section you were reading from.. i linked it on the grader clutch removal video..
wayne p basically caging the pressure plate and adjust the fingers to spec isn’t it. Fairly confident warren will have it under control
@@chenderson4969 there are several pages on adjusting the pressure plate height in the cover on the bench with the flywheel removed . I have seen this issue before several times . Caging just allows it to be assembled. Without needing to fight the pressure plate . Have you held a cover against a single disc and flywheel. There is usually about a 1/4" gap above the flywheel before the bolts suck it down. . With a multi disc clutch it's almost a quarter inch per friction disc or it will slip. That 3 disc clutch should have 5/8 to 3/4". Maybe I'm wrong.
