I was fertilizing once a week. It turned into uncontrollable algea outbreak that 60% water change, it would be all green in 2 days. I ended up eventually having to put chemicals in it to kill the algea. But it didn't just kill the algea. I think it killed alot of my beneficial bacteria, and killed my shark. After 3 weeks of adding bacteria, the bacterial bloom finally cleared out. Its back to normal now, but i learned my lesson on too much fertilizer
I agree with everything you said. Plus, you are the ONLY person on RUclips with a carpet of Monte Carlo and no Co2 running. Congrats! I would only expound on the importance of Iron gluconate. The effect on plants is fast. With that, you don't need to fertilize nearly as much as fish waste can feed plants more or less. Low tech is slower..but whats the rush?..So it isn't something you need to trim all the time. Healthy plants and low maintenance sounds good to me.
I have just recently gone from diy c02 to no c02 i was honestly sick of all the maintenance & constant pruning of plants all the time and the constant fluctuations that comes with using diy c02..you have answered the one question i had that was should i still be dosing ferts with no c02 and now i know thanks.
Algea are coming out too play when your plants are short on something. Because that is when the get in trouble even if it does not really show. Assuming everything else is in order. when you see it going on in a well planted tank something or somethings is/are missing. Often times that something is Co2. Hard too say how much of what precisely is needed so a bit of an overdose is the easy way to go about it. that is what EI basicly does. THAT is Also why EI is an almost bulletproof system.
Luckily if some algae develops in my tank my snail, molly and guppy will munch on them, good thing I'm just starting to try using root tabs since liquid ferts shows slow plant growth specially to heavy root feeder.
JJ interesting watch & makes sense on the way you describe things, just started low to medium light with anubias bucephalandra so low tech plants, but ive been dosing maximum daily as ive been reading and watching and starting to get all sorts of different algae on plants, so after watching a all your vids about dosing i was thinking half dose of volume which 300l which is equal to 30ml, so 15ml of ferts over 3 days would be alot less 5ml 3 x times week. having no co2 i can see that what your saying about way over dosing. whats your thoughts JJ and great easy to watch vids and fantastic tank you got going on
Thanks brother #FISHFAM and yah what you said should work fine and if your still having some trouble just keep dialing down on the dose and another thing to have that really helps control the algae is Seachem excel, with a no co2 setup is almost a must have
@@jjaquariums oh forgot to say i do dose TNC Carbon 6ml daily which is 2% Gluteraldahyde which is similar to excel UK made Liquid so Called carbon but i know its not carbon but good for algae, would you dose that max dosage daily too

Great vid. Love the info. Your tank is inspirational. Seeing such a beautiful low tech tank as yours is very encouraging

Thanks for this video. This has been very helpful. Where do you keep your nitrates at in this low tech tank?
My nitrates have always been 0
@@jjaquariums thanks. I will strive to get them lower.
@@suee031 10 to 20 is good range
@@jjaquariums thanks.

JJ Aquariums thanks!
Great tips. I'm always confused. I don't use cO2 so I never know if I'm dosing ferts right. Thanks for the info.💖🐡💖
yah without it dosing becomes a little tricky but still can be done
Looking great!

@@dave_camz yes that you would dose max just on the ferts dose half or less depending on your setup
@@jjaquariums Thanks J for taking the time to answer really appreciate it mate.
not max daily lol 30ml divided by 7 days so 4ml a day ish
My low tanks thrive better then my all high tech ones 😢
Ya with high tech tanks there's more to make sure things are balanced, but when things are good, less problems happen
Liked the video, HATED the intro TOO LOUD LOL.
I know people say they can't hear it and some people say it's to loud cant make everyone happy so just got rid of it

First.
I have hair algae in my co2 tank. Not alot but it is developing. Such a nuisance.
