I'm currently reading Olivia's autobio The Girl On The Balcony, it just came out. I really like it. In the book, she did state that she and her co-star did briefly date in the 60's but often fought a lot. She feels they were only meant to be good lifelong buddies.
watching the two holding each other's hands again after so many decades, I am moved to tears... I loved them so much and still do. thanks for uploading the video.
kinda hard these days with the militant feminists claiming that masculinity is toxic and holding a womans hand like this would be sexual assault they are doing a good job of killing chivalry
In an interview, Hussey revealed that she and Leonard were romantically involved for a brief period. It ultimately didn’t work out because he was quite the flirt and busy dating other girls, haha.
I wasn't even born yet when this movie was released, but many years later I saw a rerun of it on tv and it changed my life in so many ways. I hope they will make more movies even at this age because they still look perfect together
the movie came out just 3 years after my mom was born. I first saw the movie when I was in high school, abour 15 years ago, and then watched it again just recently. I've seen all the other versions, and their version is still the best. Very amazing acting and delivery of lines considering their young age at the time. it's just a bonus that they both were also so good-looking.
Isn't it incredible that these two performed literally steps away from each other but had never met until Romeo & Juliet?! Amazing. Also, I had no idea that Leonard Whiting was part of Olivier's stable of Shakespearean actors. Raquel, another great interview!
I remember going to see this film with my school.such a wonderful film, and us girls had a crush on Leonard Whiting. When we came out of the cinema all us girls were so upset fond memories.

he's still very handsome and she's still very beautiful.......... i watched the movie when I was a child in the eighties and i can't bare to watch again because it was so sad.......the ending.
So lovely to see them together. Loved the film in 1968 love it still. Look forward to their book together. Wish them all the happiness their hearts can hold.❤️😺❤️😺
It would be icing on the cake if they actually got together and spent the rest of their lives together. They have always been so cute together and are really find of one another.
All the girls loved Leonard Whiting back then. My friends and bought the theme song, "A Time For Us" by Henry Mancini, and would play it continuously on the old 45 record player, while replaying in our heads, all the scenes in the movie. To this day, on the rare occasions that I hear this song, it takes me right back to that time and those pre-adolescent "feels".
Well.... I had a crush on Olivia before I even knew I was lesbian haha :D I watched the movie for the first time in 2012 when I was 13 and instantly had my eye on Olivia. I couldn't care less for Leonard Whiting but then again, I never really thought guys were attractive.
I had the privilege to see this movie ( the first 10 times) when it was first released in my area in the spring of 1969. I was at the tender age of 13! Went with a bunch of gfs, and we fairly swooned when Leonard Whiting first appeared. I still believe he was the most handsome young man to appear in the movies( especially his bare butt). We also couldn’t believe how young and gorgeous Olivia Hussey was. They were perfectly matched to play the BEST version of Romeo and Juliet. I have literally viewed this movie upwards of 50 times over the past 52 years. It still makes me cry hysterically ( as we all did in 1969). I have recently been watching it on Amazon Prime Video and am amazed at its timelessness and beauty. I’m obsessed all over again.I even know most of the lines by heart. God bless this beautiful pair of ‘ star-crossed’ lovers for giving me an appreciation for Shakespeare at a young age, and for giving me endless years of belief in undying love. Thanks Leonard and Olivia.... you are the best💚🌹
I would love to see a coffee book but also a documentary on the making of the movie and conversation with those that were part of the movie and the editor's cuts because it seems that a few scenes were left on the cutting room floor because the length of the film but now movies are running like almost 3 hours. It would be good to have the option to hear commentary during the movie.
Olivia Hussey (née Osuna) is the daughter of an Argentine opera singer Andrés Osuna , and his English wife Joy Hussey (Olivia took her mother's maiden name for her stage name). I still love her husky voice and stunning good looks.
Everyone always talks about her physical beauty, but I have always been enchanted by her husky voice, as well. Her voice was sweet, but a bit raspy, in R and J. When she played Juliet and laughed, I could tell she had a joy and fire under the sedate innocence. I was 10 years old when I first saw the film in summer 1969. I remember the teenage girls standing in line with boxes of tissues, telling us they were going to see the film for the third time. I remember being terrified by the fight scenes ... I was quite sensitive in those days. I was thrilled to get a DVD several years ago, and made my teenage children sit through it. They were mesmerized as well. Leonard’s still a great-looking man, and seems to be under Olivia’s spell. Just lovely.
I was a 6th grader in 1968, when Romeo and Juliet came out, and I've promised myself I'm going to watch the movie one of these days. Love the movie's famous theme music. Love how the older Whiting gives the older Hussey his arm to hold here. It also occurred to me that the 1997 Titanic movie's Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett are today's Whiting and Hussey, since the Titanic movie also dealt with doomed love.
Seeing them as such intimate friends after so many decades makes me wonder why they never married each other. Maybe they were afraid marriage would spoil the friendship. I was the same age as Olivia when the movie was made. When I married in 1972, my dress was influenced by the film and was made of heavy white satin with an empire waist, bishop sleeves and a very long and heavy train. My mom made my veil which was a white satin Juliet cap with embroidered laces appliqued and a long veil of tule attached.
50 years later, they are so much better to listen to in an interview than when they were young doing press for the premier. More interesting & comfortable with who they are now. Lives well lived.
.....OH, MY GOOOD! "ROMEO AND JULIET "! I JUST ADORED THIS FILM & THESE ACTORS !!! HOW THEY 'RE IN AGES !!! OH, MY GOD! LOVE & RESPECT FROM GEORGIA ! ❤ 🍷🍷❤
It's so uncanny that they were only 17 and 15 or 16? When they made the movie. They acted like VINTAGE movie stars back then.....impeccable Shakespearean talent. A true marvel....the movie is EPIC and will be forever in history as the BEST. Romeo and Juliet movie ever made.....Leonard's handsome looks are still with him in his golden years..... two gorgeous people.....she seems so "down to earth"...too!
This stands as a proof that we really do not own anything in this life. After 56 years, we can see two other different persons both physically and morally who have nothing to do with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey we knew in 1968. Only the souls are the same in the same bodies. Apart from that, it is another time, another world, other persons, other faces totally unrecognizable, had it not been for the recordings. How hard life is, incredible but true! Everything fades, everything passes, and this is tangible proof that we do not belong to this life but to the other, the everlasting one! Rest in peace Olivia!
They still love each other. I just saw the other pics of them post-movie, they were really in love, I didn't know that, Olivia had said before he had a crush but it was obvious they were a couple.. My sister dragged me to the movie when I was 14, so he was 17, she was 15, both older than me. We each had scarves and SOBBED into the scarves to the max. What a powerful, great movie. I wish Zefferelli had helped Leonard's career along, he is wonderful.
Hate to burst your bubble, but it didn't quite happen the way you think. Actually Olivia didn't have a crush on Leonard. He seemed very emotionally attached to her, but she was infatuated with someone else.... who turned out to be Franco Zeffirelli himself, who in a later interview admitted he is gay. Olivia admitted her crush on Zeffirelli years later in a San Francisco interview in front of a live audience. We'd all like to think they were really in love in real life, but such is often not the case. It seemed to be true from Leonard to Olivia, but it was NOT returned by Olivia. They simply looked that way when they were posing for publicity pictures, and they probably were good friends in real life, but that's as far as it went. Similarly, in my mother's World War ll generation, America's sweethearts were Jeannette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. Everyone at that time thought they would make the perfect romantic couple, but they each married other spouses. In real life, Olivia Hussey was married three times, and had a child with each husband. Welcome to the the world of reality.
jennifersman , the movie you are referring to is “Frankenstein, The True Story”. It will be avail on DVD in March 2020. However, if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch it as well. Jane Seymour scared the hell out of me in it.

Such a beautiful pair. And the way he clutches her hand is so sweet and gentlemanly. They have always been such a classy pair.
No one but these two could have played "Romeo and Juliet." They are both still so beautiful.

They have great chemistry and on screen charisma. Great casting for Romeo and Juliet.

Yeah me too. It's a shame how time robs us.
Ironically if you listen to that famous song from their movie. “What is a youth” is all about time and age. Its a timeless song and perfect for this
As an 80's teen, now that song relates to my generation.

They were experienced real theater actors. So young and so professional! I'd say Superb!

I think they were just fuck buddies
jennifersman , the movie you are referring to is “Frankenstein, The True Story”. It will be avail on DVD in March 2020. However, if you have Amazon Prime, you can watch it as well. Jane Seymour scared the hell out of me in it.
thomas Romano four times actually. One was very short lived.
