It’s kinda funny. It’s non canon but before the Quincy final arc was in the manga the anime did something similar to “losing bankia but being able to use Shikai” in the “Zanpaktou Takes arc. Where the manifested Zanpaktou spirits were essentially the bankia itself (so the soul reaper couldn’t use them) but shikai was possible with strong enough will.

I'd imagine they were much lesser but way more powerful actually I think ichigo to an extent shows this
Cuz zanpkato just makes accessing shinigami power system easier, back then they'd do it without any tool
Ironically ichigo was handicapped like this at the start cuz bro was accessing his soul reaper powers without a zanpkato, bro was doing it pre oetsu way

So, the Shikai is the power of the Zanpakuto, of the user's soul, whereas the Bankai is the very identity of the Soul. Interesting

  • @Oromanowarful

It's interesting because its almost like, (if im not mistaking his answer) the power of the zanpakuto is almost imprinted in a more shallow way in the shikai state, similar to how a shinigami imprints their zanpakutos spirit onto an asauchi after spending countless time with it and then when going through bankai training they learn to externalize/matieralize that same power outward into the visible world.
I also like the line of question about how did shinigami power act before the time of the asauchi, if they didnt awaken to their zanpakuto without the asauchi as stated by nimaiya, does that mean we have to assume their is no ability to manifest zanpakuto spirit power? Even though hitsugaya was emitting cold reiatsu like you mentioned before becoming a shinigami? One question answered seems to create 10 more.

Not all Shinigami tho, just those who have Bankai.
When one attains Bankai, they can use Shikai without chanting their Shikai release command.
The release command manifests the Zanpakutou spirit's strength, this is why characters like Yamamoto and Byakuya can just switch between shikai and base without even releasing their shikai with a command.
I think that the command chant is needed for a Zanpakutou to aid its user in battle, for both Shikai and Bankai, but when one attains Bankai, they can then use shikai on their own without much if any aid.
Remember, when Ichigo fights White in his mind realm, White confirms that they both "learned" Bankai at the same time implying that either of them could use it on their own after learning it, it's just that with the release command Tensa Zangetsu.
Basically, Toshiro was panicking because he's relatively still inexperienced with his Zanpakutou and needs training wheels unlike other captains, which is why he went back to the basics to perfect his Zanjutsu.

I disagree on Toshiro, his origin story points very clearly to the idea that he is one of the shinigami with the closest bond with his Zanpakutou, specially when compared to others. Him not being able to hear Hyorinmaru is a big deal.

This is what I understood when it comes to zanpakuto and shinigamis.
Back in the day before Nimaya's asauchi some souls can manifest powers from their souls, examples are the soul king and also Ichibei. The reason I think that it is rare is because it is hard to manifest part of your soul to a visible power like conjuration, but ofcourse there will always be those special people that can like Ichigo not needing an asauchi.
Then came Nimaya with his creation, an asauchi, it is like a gigai that manifest part of you into an object (sword), it helps souls concentrate their soul onto something that is tangible to them. Therefore it became easier to conjure powers because of the aid of the asauchi.
For kido and other techniques, they usually have enchantments before you cast it. of course that helps focus your mind to manifest the kido. If you casted it or used it so much like with Aizen and his kido, you do not need to enchant the enchantment. So technically the enchantment is the asauchi for kidos.
Now there are special cases like Kenpachi, his soul is so potent and huge that the soul manifested in real life rather than just with the asauchi.
Now for the revelation of the episode "the blade is me", well there is nothing to explain here because it is literal, the blade is your soul, it is a part of you, there is no personality that helps you, it is just you thinking it does,. That is why when Ichigo realizes that on the episode. He gain full control of his soul, it is still rough, but it is its full. And I think that is why in the filler arc blade rebellion that Yama's asauchi is just flames, because he already realized that his blade is himself, no personalities, just his powers which is fire.
For the sacred weapons and family blades. I think those cases are like with Kenpachi and Stark that the original owner of those swords has souls that is so immense and potent it manifested something that has a soul of its own, but in these cases, it stayed on the asauchi as powers only not a personality. These swords are Nanao's family sword, Enrakyuten which was the family sword of Tokinada's clan, and I think every noble family has one because they usually has someone with unique souls. And also other artifacts that Yorouchi lended to Ichigo back in the soul society arc, probably imbuded with the soul of someone.
Quincies stealing bankai is somewhat not accurate in description, I think. They are technically stealing a part of the soul of a shinigami when they release their Bankai. The circle thingy they use somewhat analyzes the soul and teach the wielder their strongest technique (their bankai) to them, and they try to replicate it (that is why somewhat it is different in color, because they only have part of the soul therefore they can not manifest it fully). That is why when the original wielder of that bankai dies, the part of soul remains on that circle thingy. It acts like the family swords of the noble families, an artifact.

I wonder...if Ichigo hadn't learn bankai at that time, would his sword still be in his shikai after the old man was stolen by Muramasa? After all, his shinigami and hollow powers were fused, and his zanpakuto creation was more like an arrancar zanpakuto, and arrancars are known to be always in shikai mode in their base form, since their ressureccion is the equivalent of the bankai. I guess his zanpakuto will still be in shikai, but maybe incapable of using getsuga tensho.

It makes me wonder how far above shikai Yamamoto was base Yhwach for him to just fodderize Yamamoto like that once he lost his bankai. Against Aizen, Yamamoto was confident of fighting without zanpakto but against Yhwach it was like he was sure without bankai his loss is guaranteed.

A great, fundamental misunderstanding of the Zanpaktou is that the Zanpaktou and Shinigami aren't completely tied together. They are two separate beings working together. The reason we think they aren't is because of Ichigo and how the Zanpaktou get their powers. Ichigo's Zanpaktou was formed inside him then externalized then reforged properly. Most Shinigami don't have a Zanpaktou at birth, they are given a blank one at the academy.
This blank Zanpaktou is formless and nameless as a spirit.
Over time, as the Shinigami spends time with it, their reiatsu gets absorbed by the Zanpaktou giving it the powers it'll manifest as Shikai then ultimately Bankai.
Shikai, being the first release, isn't the actual power of the Zanpaktou but the power of the Shinigami superimposed on the sword. This is why most shikai don't completely erase the sword, just change it at worst or at best add on qualities. This is best reflected in Byakuya who still has a sword hilt in Shikai, Mayuri who changes the sword's blade, and Soi Fon who's sword transforms into a wearable blade. The Shikai is basically the power of the Shinigami's version of Bankai on themselves. The limit of their individual power.
Bankai is the true form of a Zanpaktou, it's the sword spirit after it's been so coated in reiastu that it has multiplied the powers of the Shinigami's soul, at base, about a thousand times over. Bankai are the charged sword spirit itself, not connected to the Shinigami aside from taking their reiatsu in, so this is why Bankai training involves subduing the Zanpaktou. The Zanpaktou lets you use the power it's obtained in the form of Bankai. This is why the Zanpaktou itself is often completely altered, and sometimes intangible, at this form because the Shinigami isn't using only their power(shikai), but the power of the Zanpaktou. To go back, this is why Byakuya loses his sword in Bankai, why Mayuri's sword turns into a giant monster, why Komamura autopilots a Kaiju, and why Zaraki turns into a berserker. The Bankai is the power of the sword spirit superimposed on the Shinigami.

Would you really call ichigo's sword a zanpkato tho?
To me it was just a weapon, old man zangetsu and zangetsu both just interact with ichigo not through the sword rather just use it as a weapon or a metaphor at times

    • @corruptangel6793

The Zanpakuto is their power. Oetsu uses Zanpakuto and power interchangeably when talking to Ichigo. The Asauchi is merely the catalyst used to draw out that power, as Oetsu explained, at which point it becomes the physical extension of your soul. That's why it dissapears entirely when the user loses their powers and reappears when they regain their powers. Rukia, Isshin, and Nelliel all being examples of this.
All Soul Reapers are born with a Zanpakuto. We saw this with Toshiro's backstory. He saw Hyorinmaru in his dreams before joining the Gotei and getting an Asauchi. He was even unconsciously manifesting the power to create ice. "The blade is me" is not limited to Ichigo, it is universal. That's why Oetsu scolds Ichigo and Renji for thinking of the Zanpakuto as a separate being. Friend, lover, ally, it's all nonsense. The sword is literally you.
If Shikai is the reflection of their soul, then Bankai is quite literally baring their soul, which explains why it being damaged is permanent and why learning Bankai requires being able to externalize it.
This is what I assume Kubo means by Bankai being the ego developed and manifested.
Shikai and Bankai are different based on who you are externally vs internally. How you present yourself vs who you REALLY are. Those who project a false image have a significantly different Shikai and Bankai. Shunsui, outwardly, is very carefree, playful, and lazy. His Shikai reflects that. In truth, however, he is very dark, ruthless, and haunted by his past, so his Bankai reflects that. With people like Toshiro or Byakuya, however, what you see is what you get. They wear their heart on their sleeves, so their Shikai and Bankai are very similar.

@@Zangetsu-gaTensho Ichigo's sword was a facsimile Zanpaktou. It was essentially manufactured in the same way a real Zanpaktou would be due to White's creation via Aizen, but in reverse. So for Ichigo the false bankai, hollow Ichigo, was already there from birth. Him becoming more Shinigami meant the hollow Bankai could encroach his soul. But Ichigo's Zanpaktou was essentially a real-ish one with the only caveat being that they poured their soul into him first to make him strong, when it was reforged he poured his reiatsu back into a truly forged Zanpaktou. Ichigo is literally just ironic twist after ironic twist, cuz yeah he had fullbring due to his mom being attacked by a hollow before birth, but he's also Shinigami by dad, and quincy by mom, and human by Urahara.
