HOW TO TAKE YOUR BIRDS ON A WALK AND A DRIVE

  • We think taking your birds out for a walk and a nice drive around town is a great way to socialize and get some much needed vitamin D! It is also a great bonding opportunity and family fun as long as it is done with safety in mind! Here are some things we recommend:
    1. Have a harness/ flightsuit for your bird at all times
    2. Have window perches on the window so they can see the world pass by while you are driving
    3. NEVER have your bird ON YOU if you are the driver
    4. Bring a small traveling cage with some water, some sort of portable perch (we use a basket), and a birdie blanket, especially for young/ rescue birds
    5. Keep them on a short leash
    Thank you so much for watching and please subscribe to our channel for more parrot videos!

    Hi I just watched your video of the car ride. Wow, I never took my previous birds out, but you have inspired me to try it once my babies are use to us, (only had them for a month now). How long did you have your birds before you took your first ride and where they really nervous at first? tx

    • @dlrnrngml
      @dlrnrngml 7 лет назад +1

      Hi Camille, we started harness training our birds as soon as they allowed contact with us, because the process of harness training itself takes 1 month or longer, I believe this ranged from 1 month for our GCC and Meyer's parrot, and about 4 months for our African Grey. Even if we are just taking our birds out for a car ride, they are always in a harness. None of them were very nervous at first BUT all of them would get cranky and tired in 10 minutes or so the first few times they were out. As we started taking them out on more walks they were able to really enjoy themselves and stay out as long as we will let them, haha!

    Parrots should be in safe carriers while driving. This is really dangerous. Sudden impact while driving could be deadly for birds, especially when they are right next to the windshield.

      Jeff Hg For most birds you are going to have to train them to get used to it. They aren’t going to just let you put it on them. There are many other videos about how to get them used to it. ;)

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  4 года назад

      For both brands, they have guidelines on their website pertaining to specific species of birds (including cockatiels) - for all 3 of the birds featured here, their recommended sizing worked perfectly, so I would suggest using their suggestions on their website!

    I wonder if it would be possible to design a road-safe way to transport birds by car. Putting them in a cage or on a perch in the car could result in severe injury in the case of an accident. A cushioned "car cage", held in place on one of the seats could be a safer method, but no such thing seems to already exist.

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  4 года назад

      Celltei has some bird bags that can fit in the seat of a car and strapped in with the seatbelt.

    Do you think aviator harnesses are better? Because the ones you have seem bulky.

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  7 лет назад

      marquise Washington Hello again Marquise! Super good question and one that I had to test out myself. We also have aviator harness for all our birds, yes they are much less bulky and we tend to use them when we are going for a short walk on a hot day. For longer activities like a drive + walk we found for our birds that they prefer the flightsuit (at least from what I can see they pick on it less and are less cranky by the end). BUT if you read different forums you will realize each bird has their own preference, some birds only will use aviator harnesses, some only the flightsuit etcetc. I usually recommend they get both and see what their fids like in different situations

    What kind of parrot is lemon?

  • @MrTr3D
    @MrTr3D 6 лет назад +2

    Not good to put a bird in the front. Good that the bird isn't standing near the airbag opening. Air bags will blow out at 200 miles per hr. In the past, there was a small infant which was decapitated from an airbag explosion. It's much safer to put the bird in the back seat. You never know if some idiot slams you from behind because the driver pays attention to the phone, rather than the road. Just like I've seen people put their legs up on top of the airbag while the other person is driving. Accident is waiting to happen. It's better than safe than sorry.
