@@fubukifangirl I think it was supposed to be bad and hated for 3 reasons, 1) The story wasn't supposed to be a musical, as one complaining person said while walking out of the theater, it was a serious story that was changed into a musical 2) It crossed musical styles throughout the number, from a slow passionate song (which Madelyn was also not too good at singing passionately), and then it turned to a half-assed rip-off of an old Broadway Busby Berkeley-style number, and then changed straight into a disco dancing-style. A good musical must have a reason to go with a certain style of a song, a reason which corresponds with that point in the story, but this number just jumped to different musical styles for no reason, and it didn't match with the tyoe of story that this musical was supposed to be based on. 3) Also, the audience members we saw walking out were doing so during the finale song, so that doesn't make it look to be as bad of a show as it would be if they were walking out earlier in the show. Yes, we heard a few people really badmouthing it, and a guy snoring loudly, but what percentage of the entire audience's opinions did we really hear? This means that the show may've not been looked at as being as awful as it seemed. However, the signs we did see did let us know that the show definitely wasn't a hit either
@Foodfangirl Songbird is what they called this show but it was supposed to be based on "Sweet bird of youth", as one of the walker outers said, which was a serious story. And like I said above, just that number alone crossed several completely different styles, from romantic (poor attempt at romantic) to Busby Berkley to disco, with nothing in the number or lyrics expressing their change in styles, a good show number will do that, and also probably do fast costume change (or stripping off a top layer of clothing to reveal the clothes which matches the next style). And her lyrics were very egotistical and repetitive, all different ways of her continually saying "I see me! I'm so great!". These were all reasons why people walked out and disliked it
I love how they all start walking out during their Big Band, West-End section. Just looks hilarious, seeing all the effort of the performance in the mid-section greeted with apathy.
Yeah, that's how theater works. It's always interesting when a film or a TV show designs a long take and people react "Oh my god that scene went on for twelve minutes without a cut! It's brilliant! How do they even do that???" ... and live theater does this _routinely_ eight times a week. It's just rehearsal - which is rare for film. Sitcoms that have audiences are probably the closest analogue to live theater since they perform the entire script at once - even though they can cut and re-take and edit if necessary.
The first three shots of the movie are all great long takes (although the crane shot down from the sky is a visual effect). It’s something that Zemeckis does a lot and it’s neat to see how creative he can get with them. Another one that he did that I’m a fan of is in his version of A Christmas Carol; almost the entire Ghost of Christmas Past sequence is a single shot (yes, I know it wasn’t one take because it’s motion capture, but it still takes a ton of effort and creativity to do well).
