Always been interested in auto painting and a car enthusiast !! I never seen good work like you done superb ! Where I live guys at the professional paint shops I called them guys from the kitchen just spray over the bumper no sanding no cleaning even the colour match is awful after 6 months the whole paint is pealing of ! You just did a great job I enjoyed watching it tumbs up !
Never get tired of your vids. You are so relaxing and laid back. Even the haters don't get to ya. Keep up the great work! Can't wait for the weather to get better(winter here) so I can paint some shit. Got my bike waiting to get a new color.

Can't beat experience in any profession there is, if someone has been doing something for 20 years you would be really stupid not listen to a pro like that. Respect.
LOL.. Perfect timing. I just been sitting out under a tree in the back yard soft back 500 grit sanding the MPS bumper and trims, having got most of it done on the car with the random orbital before removing it. More primer this arvo. Back yard = no wet on wet with the primer sadly. Not enough guns, not enough decent continuous conditions. Still stinking hot here Gunny and now it's humid... bloody Perth weather drifting over. Anyway progress is being made :) Another good vid mate
THAANK YOU! I’ve been trying to find a video of how to prep a ORIGINAL bumper cover with oem paint. Because sometimes you find a used bumper cover but need to repaint it a different color. I couldn’t find a specific video on this, everything is usually how to prep a NEW bumper cover that is pre primed or non primed. I wasn’t sure if you could just sand the clear coat and respray over it or if you HAD to sand it all down to bare plastic. Thank you 🙏🏽
It's a brilliant trick, obviously be careful, but it stops the possibility of seeing the high spot from where the filler was. Also you use less sandpaper, that's a bonus.
Great job, as always from you👍🏿. I own a body shop, insurance co won't pay to fix rock chips. I've explained to customers when I repair damaged area. I can fix chips but it cost more. 99% won't pay because their vehicles are daily drivers and they know it will be chipped again.
I always wash bumpers before working on it. Just gives me a better feeling and I can make sure that if I have dirt in it, it's not from not from cleaning it not up properly
Hey Gunny , probably a dumb suggestion but maybe you could do a short video about the different types of primers and their main application, for example I’m doing up my sons car it’s from 1988 and has polyurethane bumpers , I’m thinking of using epoxy primer because I’ve heard fillers bond well to it as I don’t know if today’s fillers will bond to the urethane itself

I have to paint front& rear bumpers and lower cladding on my 02 KIA Sedona, all plastic, van has very nice clean upper white paint and nasty Gold 😩 bottom! I’ve searched YT for how to paint existing plastic bumpers and 99.9% are all new bare bumpers , I’m surprised there’s not much information on refinishing existing plastic’s, especially with most cars have that now days! What's the polyester fine filler you use for the chips/scratches? I always find bondo cures too quick for small chip fills E: is it the 2k poly body filler?
Nice one gunny. Good prep is the key, there is nothing more disappointing than getting the finish coat on and finding you have missed something. Then having to do it all again. Who needs people whose attitude is near enough is good enough.
I sanded my bumpers that have Clear on them and have repairs so I am gonna use a Primer Filler but I do have some small bare metal spots. Do I need to seal those bare metal spots or can I just use the Primer filler and if I do need to seal can I just use a Spray can of Automotive Sealer ??
Great work. I have a front bumper that needs prepped with single stage white paint. Would I need to prime it first or just sand it down with 400 and 500 to prep it for paint?
Im about to do a bumper repair very similar to this but with spraycans. After filling a few scratches an scrufmarks with polyester filler do i need to cover these with some expensive 2k sealer or is there a cheaper way to to prepair these small areas for basecoat? I have 1k transparent plasic primer but i guess that wont work well on top of polyester filling? Could i use ordinary 1k etchprimer? Im trying to save 40 bucks on a 2k spraycan that that will barely used. Or is it a bad idea to cheap out on this?
Most of the time i will sand down the whole bar with 220 to sand out the worst stone chips then finish it of with 320 and 400 by hand wet on wet it and 90 % of the time the colors are good but when their not 100% they can't realy complain i fixed your entire bumper for free i always check the color and if its a dissaster to match i will just blend it
I'm just about to spray a bumper. I had to repair 3 major cracks/splits. I've filled ALL the stonechips, cut back sprayed filler/primer, cut back, built new sections out of fiberglass/carbon fiber. The prepped bumper is like silk. I'm scare to base coat and lacquer it in case I screw it up at any stage 😢
Hey mate!! I have a set of wheels for my Toyota 86 that I tried painting. I primed it then painted it and it’s not sticking well!! I know I need to sand it beforehand but I was wondering if you could just reply with a basic step by step on how you would do it! Thanks!!!! Love the videos
Hey did you sand before primer with 320 grit every where that was primed and after primer did you block it down using 320 and blocking those scratches out with 500
Happy New Year Gunman and thanks for all the great videos you have helped a hell of a lot of people out here in the panel and painting world and thanks for taking the time out to do the videos 👍
Good video Gunny. Something that confuses me is when to use a flex agent on flexible plastic bumpers? I just painted for the first time couple weeks ago and it was the most satisfying experience of my life!
Great video. Is it possible to repair most bumper scuffs on the underneath part that are caused by driving into a raised curb whilst parking at a low speed?
I have sanded a original bumper rdy to paint. Its got many stone chips n nicks, Can u spray 2k primer over the whole bumper to fill in all those holes. I cant find any info on 2k primer on whole bumpers.
Hi gunman, when you flat off the original paint/clear should you sand until the orange peel has completely gone, on my bumper there is still like small shiny bits left …. Cheers 👍
Love the video! And have subscribed! I bought a painted front bumper on eBay exactly 1 year ago for my Cadillac Escalade Platinum Edition. Thought it was a good deal at the time. Th bumper came smashed in a box and I was told to pour hot water over it and get it back to its shape. Which worked....however after install I found myself touching up the paint after EVERY drive. Finally I said forget it. After 7-8 months the bumper is absolutely shot. Missing paint everywhere. I know how to begin with a “primed” bumper. However if your repainting... I assume do what you did here, and no need to prime? Since I’m removing the paint and evening with sanding?
I want to completely repaint my front bumper from the ground up but with the same colour paint as it just has lot of surface damage, i have access to a lot of tools working on a farm so are there any pads or tools I could use on an angle grinder so I don’t have to spend 50 quid on a sanding wheel to do 2 bumpers
Great video 👍. I was wondering how do you not cut through it while sanding? I'm learning and I'm sure they're sick of me cutting through on a lot of edges
I have an 87 VW Scirocco that has been a project for many years. The bumpers are are rough textured plastic. I am wanting to throw a flat/matte black on the bumper. Any advice on prepping the bumper? I don't expect this to be a permanent solution, just something to tide me over until the real paint job happens with the entire vehicle.
Hi from New Zealand, we might beat you guys at cricket yet! Lol. Is there any clears which are more UV resistant we suffer from peel a lot here especially on plastic bumpers. Would just spraying a couple of extra coats help or not? Any advise welcome. Thx for taking time to make your videos as they really help.
As soon as cricket comes on I tune out lol, I used to love playing it when I was a kid but I find it a really boring spectators sport AFL is so much better 🤘😄🤘 as far as I know the more expensive clears are way more resistant to the UV rays, I'm not sure if an extra coat would help but I guess it probably would, I'd say the best way is to keep the paint well waxed, give it even a quick hand wax once a month through the summer and I reckon that'll really extend the life. I gave my car a quick wax last time I washed it and it literally took an extra 10min, after a week it's still feeling nice and slippery, it's like a layer of sunscreen for your paint. Pair that with some top of the line low VOC clear and your paint should last many years.
The Gunman thx for that very helpful. Now this might make me look like an idiot, but I was told to add a flex additive to plastic bumper paint base colour, now is this actually a thing because I have never heard of it, or is someone just pulling my chain!!!
They're are some people out there who think you have to use it on all plastic parts but you don't, if you did there'd be cracked paint on nearly every bumper in Australia, but there isn't. Now in saying that, there are certain types of plastic parts that do need it, but they are few and far between, manufacturers now know the types of plastic to stay away from, so it's not required on any car I've painted that was made in the last 25 years. The old Nissan NX coupes used to crack and XF falcons also needed flex additive. So simple answer is no, you don't need it, but don't forget the plastic adhesion promoter, or it will be flaking before you get to the nearest roundabout.
I have just completed spraying my plastic parts on the MPS and I have never used the flexible additive ever on any of my cars and have never had an issue. As Gunny said... Plastic adhesion primer is a must. As I'm a DIY car painter I use the Septone rattle can clear adhesion primer on all bare plastic. I have even used it on cut throughs and have never had an issue with modified acrylic base coats and or 2K topcoats over it. I actually had a repair done once and I'm fairly sure they put too much flexible additive in the 2K clearcoat and I could literally scratch the bumper rubbing it with my hand. It makes 2K soft. sporn of satan as far as I'm concerned... lol
Thanks for your video, very helpful indeed. I found some imperfection of my plastic bumper after applying primer, is it too late to apply filler over the top? or would you require to sand it back again with 320 grit before applying the filler?
This is very nice work and information! Been reworking my 85 Xamaro and needed proper info. Found my bumper had been painted over without someone sanding it, so I have to strip it down and sand it...sadly...any tips about getting that top crap off? Thanks!! Looking for your video on how to do this from the start..where to find video?? Thanks from Canada!! Yup lots of hard work but even an old gal can do this!!:)
Hi Mate, do you put primer over the whole bumper in this scenario as you added filler to a few areas? or do you just sand the non damaged painted areas with 600 and then put base right over it?
Interesting to watch! Quick question: bumper of my used car was painted(probably) and I see that paint was applied on a rectangular raised area which seems to be VIN sticker. I don't know if body shop just painted over the VIN sticker or they just covered the VIN with a special sticker of the original size as the VIN sticker. It seems to be that one lower edge can be pilled off but I don't want to risk it just yet. Do special VIN cover stickers exist that are used by body shops?
I work at a dealership body shop, and the paint department NEVER fixes rock chips or scratches. They're too lazy to even dab a bit of color in them when blending. I don't understand them. I want every car I touch to look as good as possible when the owner gets it back. But they won't do anything unless they're getting paid for it. And sometimes they don't even do that much. Laziness.
Its funny when I grab my phone and walk away from everyone, my wife and kids are like "Gunman mustve posted this week's video".. Haha. Love your vids man. Been watching for years. How far are we from thw new Top 10 vid? Keep painting that sh!t..!
Well I've get the new top 10 vid edited, I've got some finishing touches to do in the next week, then it should fit into the schedule early Feb by the looks of it.
Just use a bit of Scotch Brite and take the gloss off. It doesn't have to be perfect as it's never even going to see the light of day once the parts are back on.
Could not hear clearly what brand of soft pads you are using. Do you need to prime a bumper before painting it or it is OK to just smash the paint on it after the prep work? Thanks.
I would have been using the Norton pads. But 3M have these new sanding cloths called Grippy, they're awesome. If you can find them get them. And look, as long as it's smooth and you can't feel any rough spots and there's no areas with large filter repairs they you can spray straight over, but if you do fill the stone chips you must use a fine filler, not your normal body filler, it must be a fine glazing putty. A good way can be to spray one coat of non-sanding primer straight before the colour. Hope that hasn't confused you too much 😜
Hi mate. What do you do about the detailed areas where the driving lights or garnishes are. Takes me ages to get onto every nook and cranny in those bars and I wonder if my method is overkill. Cheers Just John
Hey gunman love the videos have kinda a painter to painter question I am working in a 70s viking cross draft paint booth and we are picking up in business and a downdraft is kinda out of the question for my boss and wasnt sure if you have sprayed in a side down draft or semi down draft and which one seemed better in you opinion thanks again keep up the great videos

I used to use a razor blade to sand chips but not any more because it doesn't take to long to sand it with sand paper
Yup lots of hard work but even an old gal can do this!!:)
is it a problem if a little plastic primer is applied to the primer already on the bumper?
Get in there!!! Love your work.
Cheers for another great motivational video
Thanks again for watching mate. Merry Christmas and HNY!!
Hi Mate, do you put primer over the whole bumper in this scenario as you added filler to a few areas? or do you just sand the non damaged painted areas with 600 and then put base right over it?
Very nice work Gunman 👍🤘👏👏👏,Merry Christmas
Can I use a dewalt sander cordless and still get the same results
Thanks for the share.
Hey what is that polyester filler I tried to plastic body filler it's okay but I don't like it that much and it's hard to sand
Great vid man your work All way's comes out good, back to Work soon holidays almost over
Yes, I'm back to work on Monday myself woo hoo, let's paint some shit!!
Laziness.
you get what you pay for scratches and rock chips will cost more
Its funny when I grab my phone and walk away from everyone, my wife and kids are like "Gunman mustve posted this week's video".. Haha. Love your vids man. Been watching for years. How far are we from thw new Top 10 vid? Keep painting that sh!t..!
Well I've get the new top 10 vid edited, I've got some finishing touches to do in the next week, then it should fit into the schedule early Feb by the looks of it.
Simply the Best
Does the water rinse help remove static?
Yes it definitely does.
Just curious about the fog light area what do you do there. There was nothing in the clip, I would like to know because they are a pain.
Just use a bit of Scotch Brite and take the gloss off. It doesn't have to be perfect as it's never even going to see the light of day once the parts are back on.
When you paint a bumper do you use Bulldog on it or any type of adhesive? Please let me know thanks, man you are the best
Any advice for someone who is qualified but hasn’t sprayed or worked in garage for ten years ?
Nice job as always
Happy new year mate😉😉😉😉😉😉
Would it be amazing if they can make a brush ,with 600 grit bristles so you can wash and sand those tight spaces.
what is the best spray gun clearcoat ?
what is the best spray gun basecoat?
use basecoat 1.4 or 1.3 ?
Think you ❤❤🌷
Primer, 1.6 (1.8 is probably better but I happen to have a 1.6) basecoat, 1.4. clearcoat 1.3 is what I use and it's always worked well for me.
Would this be the same way to prep a wheel guard?
Pretty much yes
Hope that hasn't confused you too much 😜
Good job 👍
Thanks mate 🤘
Hey gunny, do you have any videos that tackle Rust/Corrosion? from small cases that can be spot repaired to the large restoration jobs?
