So we then got her a good set of standard shears with spring clip in the handle. Much more practical for her. She now carries the Raptor in her car emergency kit.
I used the seatbelt cutter to cut a carpet once. It cut through the entire width of the carpet in one continuous pull. Like butter. I recorded it and showed some friends. I also cut a torqued tshirt and safety vest from a guy caught in some machinery. It was twisted and torqued so tightly that the guy was having a hard time breathing. We got shears to cut the twisted fabric but cheap shears were bending and separating. Unable to cut. My Leatherman shears cut through with a few pumps of the handle. Many guys saw how my shears performed now i see more and more Leatherman shears on their waists!!!
The leatherman has kind of a small teeth on it's lower shear, that can hold on any threaded material while cutting plus the fact that leatherman shears are thicker which made it better to cut any rope like materials.
Yeah. Big thing is the cutting performance. You can even cut a full motocycle jacket, leather or not. That is the most important feature for me at the ER. Never used parashears, but the cutting blades look like the ones on the shit the hospital give us as standard issue. A guy cutting some cord with something made to save people is just silly.
Trauma shears serve two main purposes, in my experience: cutting clothes off and cutting wound care supplies; tape, gauze, etc. Frankly, my raptor has been unused for 7 years because it doesn't fit well in my hands. Wiss scissors are a godsend though. They're sharp, inexpensive and cut through anything
Hands down leatherman wins, the SOG looks like it was ad-hoc put together with alot of tools that are useless for who it's made for. Also working EMS in the field and in a level 1 trauma center I have used the ring cutter many times, its a very useful tool.
If it broke during the intended use, Leatherman will certainly replace it for you! That ring cutter is absolutely essential in the field…and is used more often than you might think in hospital. Time is often essential. When you need a ring cutter, you need it Right Now. (A jammed ring may trap someone in their burning vehicle, or it may cut off blood circulation to the finger. The first is a life or death problem. The second could cost someone his or her finger, if left untreated. Not to mention - a ring on a badly swollen finger is extraordinarily painful!) In any case, that feature is no afterthought. Leatherman intends it to work, to work well, and to work every time…under repeated use, for the life of the tool. Ask any medical professional, or any bench jeweler - some of whom are on call to deal with extreme cases. (You wouldn’t believe the dumb things some people try to do with rings. I’ll leave that to your imagination. You’ll probably guess right on the first try.) In any case, it should never break during use. The company will want to know that it did; and they will probably thank you for telling them. (It’s most likely a problem in heat treatment, which could affect EMTs and ER Nurses who depend on their Raptors every day.)
In my mind these aren’t really the same tool. Similar. But the Raptors are very emergency response specific in their design, whereas the Parashears seem like they are meant for survival or all around EDC with those additional tools. I feel like they both have their place, but not the same place.
Good comparison, in fairness to the SOG's lack of pocket clip.... I have the Raptor and carry mine loose in my trouser pocket, so given that closed they have a similar sihouette the SOG could probably be used/carried in that manner. Again great video, cheers.
We're mulling over both of these for EMS week gifts. The Raptors are $79-plus, the SOG $63 with free shipping. For something that will be easy to lose on a chaotic scene in the dark. Like a crowded beach full of drunks like we have a few times a year. Regular trauma shears from somewhere in Asia are a dime a dozen. One of the helicopter services throws them out like pens and mouse pads. Few folks even carry anything remotely like a multi-tool. They're too cool to carry anything on a belt, especially females (you know its true). I can barely make the females on my shift wear a radio. Some kids tend to go into a house empty-handed. I stomp them like roaches (after the call). Some are almost too cool to carry their own pen or notecards, but always seem to need mine. A few younger guys have Raptors on those fire dept. radio slings, which are just another (but somehow cooler) version of the rookie batbelt that we like to laugh about. Yeah I have one, been using it 35 years. If you get to sleep at work and don't wear a radio sling or batbelt, its hard to keep low chute-times if you have to load up your pockets before getting out the door. The alternative is to sleep with hard items in your pockets, sleeping fully clothed. Losing a Raptor on a scene would be like losing a Littman stethoscope. Stuff grows legs and walks, especially pretty toys.
I'm a box medic and I vote for spending an extra $15 for the quality of the Leatherman; I use mine ALL the time and don't like to be on shift without it - also, the rookie batbelt thing is hilarious and at one point I was just as guilty of that as all of the newer guys but at this point in my career (almost 10 years), the only things I really need are a flashlight and my Raptor, my most-used tool. Also, I bought a bright baby blue Littman so I could easily recognize it as mine 😎 I haven't managed to lose it yet but I know what you're saying lol
Most important questions for trauma shears, how difficult is it to clean dried blood, gunk, and trash from the joints and how often/easy is it to take apart, sharpen, and service?
As a medic who uses the raptors... Get friendly with your hospital's autoclave. The SOG looks like it should be reasonably clean-able but you will never get under the buttons on the raptors. They have to be autoclaved . They also pretty much can't be taken apart (I have broken several star bits trying to budge the center bolt) and the toothed profile means that they can't really be sharpened without needle files. also, the thick blade means that as the pivot loosens over time, you can't straighten the blade like you could with the SOG. Also, Leatherman has left me high and dry on support for it. I'm a very unhappy customer for the raptors after years of tolerating them. Toolcrib here's awesome video sold me on trying the parshears, which have a lifetime warranty and SOG offers 50% off for first responders.
@@colinmartin9797 I'd just carry a simple thick bladed one. And carry a leatherman or large victorinox in addition. Some things simply shouldn't be multitool.
@@LittleUrbanPrepper The only thing that the raptors had going for them was that absolutely perfect belt system. If leatherman just made a belt clip that held a standard pair of penny cutters like they do the raptors, I'd buy that thing in a heartbeat. As it stands, the SOG have been easier to clean and more durable than the leatherman raptors. If a compact, folding trauma shear is important yo someone, I'd point them that direction.
You can take the raptors apart VERY easily to clean them and put them back together. You can also sharpen one of the blades on them (the smooth edged blade) but not the micro-serrated edge blade as the serrations are so tiny not even a needle file would be able to sharpen them. The good thing about the serrations though is that they grab the material you are trying to cut and prevent that material from “slipping” forward as you cut. That being said you can get them sharpened by leatherman. I will personally just sharpen the smooth side until they don’t cut anymore, then get them serviced by Leatherman.
The leatherman also has a lifetime warranty on them where they will take care of any issue you have with them including sharpness. I’m not sure but I don’t think SOG offers that. But great partial review on both of the products.
As a paramedic, the raptors win purely because of the ring cutter. The cutters we carry on the ambulance are horrible. It’s not the most common emergency, but the ring cutter on the raptors blow away any commercial cutter I’ve seen.
Yeah. As of 08/22/2023 the price of the Leatherman Raptor is $99.00 Plus Your States Sales tax. Still worth it, as these shears are top notch. They will do what they are designed to do. I would recommend them to anyone serious about Trauma Shears.
I like the parashears. As a firefighter/EMT I like how there’s a O2 key. I’ll always have a key and never have to find one. It’s perfect for what I need and use it. Personally I don’t believe there’s a best. There’s good for what you need it for. Good review

@@txtoolcrib I am a paramedic and will never use the garbage $5 shears. I have both the xshear and raptor but i mainly carry the raptor on my person because the pocket carry ability with the clip is really compact and low profile. The cheap shears have failed too many times and hurt your fingers too because of how badly they cut, you have to squeeze excessively hard. I don't have time to trifle with POS shears and worry about whether I'm going to have to find a second pair of shears in the heat of treatment because the garbage pair wouldn't cut. If you have a nice pair of shears, you shouldn't lose them. You put it back where it came from after you use it, you don't just set them down or hand them to people without making sure you get it back immediately after they're done.
Almost the same as macgyver bryan I bought a knife from them last year and not even 20 min into owning it the pocket clip turned into the handle of the knife destroyed the pocket clip slot by deforming the g10 scales or whatever it was made of and snapped the clip. Long story short most of there knives ive found only have a single screw holding the pocket clip on which causes a pivot point. Ive never seen this on "quality" knives I own crkt buck kershaw and they all use 2 screws to hold there clips on. Sog denied any warranty or replacement or guarantee it wouldn't happen again
@@rockstarfan886 I had an issue with a tool on a MT. I asked just to replace only that tool, they said it had to be purchased. Used to Leatherman NQA warranty. They begrudgingly sent it after almost pleading. It was traded for something. Almost too bad it was was fun flipping it. The Free P4 is just as fun.
The so called rope or seat belt cutter is completely useless tool for any multitool. I could only see little use for anglers and only when it is always accessible ie outside. Your very good presentation showed it clearly. It is much easier to cut the seat belt or rope with shears or serrated blade like on Victorinox RescueTool.
They cut rolled gauze very well, same thing with Paracord. And yeah, it's kinda dumb to have it on a layperson's multi-tool, but it doesn't have a risk of accidentally cutting the patient like a serrated blade.
My coworker is a SOG diehard, when he saw my Raptors he drooled over them, shortly thereafter the Paras came out and I told him about it and even HE considered them less that the Raptors.
I used the Raptors on my years of fire service and I loved them. Things pretty much cut through anything i had to get through. Jeans, leather boots, thick jackets and so on. After a while though i did notice they sort of dulled out a little so they’re just sitting in a drawer. But i would still recommend that tool to ANYONE wether its for Duty or EDC. Well worth it

@@Genesislights not this time, because the pivot for the blades is not at the same location as the pivot point for the compound leverage gears. So it opens up fairly quickly, which is why I believe you lose the benefit of the compound leverage to begin with.

Pretty good video. However, for a "fair" comparison, you should have used the new Raptor shears instead of your old ones. I fully understand the reason for not doing that. But anything that the SOG "won" on, it could be that the SOG is better, or it could be that the Raptor needed sharpened. As for the out of place tools on the SOG, I think they did that for marketing reasons. It doesn't matter that they are not very useful for this sort of tool, it allows them to call say the SOG has 11 tools.

I was going to suggest/ask for a similar video. General maintenance for multi tools. I have particular trouble getting serrated blade and awl back in good shape after a tough job.
@@ryanf5503 I'm total newb to sharpening knives and I got the Lansky Blade Medic for $11 on Amazon. It has a diamond rod to sharpen serrations. Try getting the Blade Medic. Of course check some instructional videos on RUclips to help out.
Manufacturers of Leatherman Raptor and SOG Parascessers should donate their items for review to the ocean-conservation-namibia. What better way to test both scissors under salt water, sand conditions while cutting off different sizes of fishing lines entangled on the seal while holding down a scared, angry wild seal. So far I have seen them only Leatherman Raptor type used to the the fishing lines. This is an actual field test.
How tight should the pivot on the Leatherman be? When I got mine I felt that it was unusually difficult to open and close the blades to make cuts. I tried loosening the pivot a bit but ran into issues with the blades separating and not cutting near the pivot, so I tightened it back up. I'm assuming there is meant to be a little play between the blades when they are fully open? The blades on my pair "meet up" around the 4cm mark on the ruler. Does anyone have any insight on what the "correct" pivot tightness should be on these?
The Leatherman is great. You can cut a full motorcycle jacket with it. That is the most useful feature I have needed the most at the ER. If the parashears are as well cutting, I might consider them in the future. Ergonomics don't count for me, performance does. As long as I do not have t o use the standard issue shit the hospital gives us. You are cutting some fucking cords with things to made to save people. Cut some actual motorcycle jacket, so we could actually see the difference. I know the Leatherman is better, because of the wider blade... 😏
To me, this is a no brainer. Common sense to me since Victorinox's blend of stainless is so corrosion resistant. I see no excuse for Victorinox not making a full size set of scissors or trauma sheers. With the way people go nuts over mirror polish officer Swiss steel. I can't imagine why this product wouldn't be graciously received by consumers. I bet Diezelle57 and Ben would be first in line to get ahold of a Raptor style Victorinox. Even if it was a Fiskar sewing sheer type of scissor from Victorinox. I could definitely see Ben Jonesing to get a set for himself. 😆
When you cut the rope that was thick the red rope when you use the sog you were cutting the Rope towards the far end of the blades. When you use the Raptor you cut nearer to the pivot of the two blades which is always going to cut better than if you go farther out near the end of the blades. I think that was very biased I'm not sure what to think. You seem to already have your mind made up that raptor is going to be better than a sog
I learned the hard way you don't use either of these for cutting cardboard; you use the Skeletool instead, which so far has not let me down yet, especially with its Bit Kit which only adds functionality. I used to work in a restaurant and would regularly use my Raptor for cutting open cardboard boxes, well over time that caused problems with both the screw and somehow part of the handle too. MAYBE I got a lemon (that does happen) but when Leatherman themselves acknowledges at least one design flaw and then OMITS FEATURES from their "redesign", that's a problem.
comfort doesn't really matter because it takes less than a minute to cut the cloth. it you're cutting the clothes of 5-6-10 people then comfort is important
SOG in the open position inside the case still exposes the blade... Kinda no point to carry it tat way when you are likely to soil, or knock it on yourself or someone else in that exposed manner.
I’ve carried the raptor for quite a while, only beef I have is when the sheers get dull, they won’t cut a piece of gauze, the raptors are geared toward emt/firefighters... ive used the seat belt cutter to cut jeans off patients, used the O2 rectangle to turn tanks on and off, sheers to cut clothing etc. they’ve been great, my second pair has stayed sharp being the first pair was used and have no idea what they cut with them lol, I carry mine folded in the carrier... the SOG has too much garbage to be useful medical wise, looks like they just put some regular cheap trauma sheer blades on them and useless trinkets in the handle
I think I agree with everything you just said. Seems like SOG was trying to do too much with this one. Better to leave it simplified for the target demographic.
I bought the Leatherman Raptor the week they hit the market. Had it sitting in the side pocket of my drivers door on my truck. I took my truck in to get an alignment. When I got my truck back I noticed that they were gone. I about had a come apart with the manager. After about a 20 minute rant, the mechanic magically found them on the ground. Apparently, they had “fallen” out of the truck door when he got in it. Uh huh 🤔!
@@txtoolcrib I have a Console Vault in two of my vehicles. Have had a few things stolen out of my truck before. A valet attendant stole my brand new digital camera once. And have been broken into a couple of times. So now, anything valuable goes in there, especially when it’s not parked at work or at home.
Know this is a year late... from my experience in USR, the raptors are better at the heavier materials: boot leather, laces, upolstery, and different cordage.
I have plenty of Knipex products. I also don’t generally use the Raptor for cutting wire, which it can handle with ease by the way. Finally, mine are slightly dull because I use them.
This test would have been interesting while wearing the thin nitrile gloves that most medics wear and compare the damage to the gloves after testing. It seems like the locking mechanisms of the SOG would destroy the gloves easily. The ability to clean the tool as well as the sheath on the Leatherman would be a major plus from a medical use point of view. The addition of a bottle opener to every multitool seems like pure insanity to me. If I had a multi purpose tool with no bottle opener I can guarantee you I could open a bottle using one of the other tools.
I've been using a raptor as a medic for about 7 years I fucking hate it. For starters, the ergos on the raptor are utter dogshit. Trying to get through a motorcycle rider's full suit with them is absolute agony. Hotspots everywhere. I can hand on heart say they're the most uncomfortable penny cutters I have ever used. Second, they don't keep an edge very well. They also have a really weak pivot that eventually works enough play into the blade that it doesn't close no matter what, and the torx fasteners might as well be rivets. The thick ass blade makes them very not maneuverable in the material you're cutting, particularly motorcycle leathers through CE padding. Leatherman won't even fucking sharpen them anymore. You can't even PAY them to sharpen them, and sharpening the teeth is a bitch, requires some tiny needle files and a vise. The other issue is that they are nightmares to clean. So many moving parts, everything gets nasty and you better start your shift by autoclaving the thing. The o2 wrench works, but not always great - isolette under-mount o2 tanks are NOT easy for it, but it can do the job. I don't know why anyone would use the glass breaker. I've used it in testing on a wrecker car and it HURT. Even with bunker gloves. Get a keychain size spring loaded punch or a carbide metal punch. The ring cutter is worthless, I chowdered it immediately trying to cut mild steel wire (we have better ring cutter saws in the kit but I am a magician with dental floss anyways) and the seatbelt ripper is just a derp stupid tool when the scissors do the job. The ONE and only thing I say it does well is the carry system, the open/closed carry and adjustable belt clip are great. The pocket clip is too stiff to use regularly, and you don't want to out a dirty set of penny cutters in your pocket anyways. They also don't seem to be very corrosion resistant. I have cheap stamped cutters that didn't rust half as fast as these did. I keep them because they sorta still work on the first 2/3 of the blade (the rest doesn't bite anymore since the pivot is worn out, which happened within the first year) and the o2 wrench, plus the nice belt carry. But I hate them and would NEVER recommend anyone pay money for them. It pisses me off because they have kind of soured me on the Leatherman brand. Leatherman doesn't support them for shit and in YEARS since making them, they haven't addressed any of the design flaws, yet they keep selling them. I'm very interested in the SOG to be honest. The Leatherman is such a low bar to clear, I can't see how they could ever be worse.
This begs the question. If you hate them so much, why have you carried them for seven years? I have products that I have purchased which I ended up not liking. Either I would sell them or stop using them altogether.
@@txtoolcrib they were a gift from a partner, so I couldn't just get rid of them, and for the first couple years, Leatherman WOULD sharpen them, so even though they dulled fast, I could get the toothed edge freshened up. They still sort of work, so because of the phenomenal belt clip, I will pull them out for less critical work that I can suffer them chewing on, and they still work as an oxygen wrench. And I don't sell or give away things to people that I know are junk. The raptor is junk and Leatherman doesn't support it or it's users for a damn. Which is frustrating, because that belt carry is absolute genius and there's serious potential. As it is, your awesome overviews on so many multitools has convinced me to buy the SOG shears and their mini multi tool - SOG gives first responders 50% off, and the lifetime warranty is peace of mind. What woukd be absolutely killer, would be one of these shears to have replaceable blades. I'd love that. I'm curious if you've ordered a Toler tools union? I have one on the way eventually. Also wanted to thank you for your review on the roxon storm s801s. That little beast might be the most powerful "everyday" multi tool I've ever used. It goes on my belt next to the raptors, and once my powerpint waivers, will be retired to my car's emergency kit. That compound lever on the corkscrew is genius, giving a true waiter's friend. I wish corkscrews on multi tools were more common. I drink a lot of wine on vacation!
The SOG are more comfortable be far, however... I find that the blades on the sheer bend under extreme stress, and the blades move apart, this means it takes a lot longer to get through tough materials. I primarily use my sheers for utility purposes, not first aid, so the leatherman works better for me. It's a shame LM isn't backing these as good as they used to... LM used to be a great company but I fear they are following the pack when it comes to customer service. Also, 420 HC and 440HC just don't cut it anymore (get it) LM needs to update their steel if they want to keep charging premium prices...
It is my experience that pretty much without exception everything made by SOG is a total piece of garbage, I look forward to seeing what this review says
@@tawmifm They are half the weight of the multitools, and you have an extra 2-3oz to work with for adding more tools, while having better ergonomics, they work way better than the sog ones, and on par with the leatherman ones. On top of the the only difference in tools between the xshears, and the leatherman is a ring cutter, oxygen wrench, zip cutter, and a glass breaker. Leatherman sells a tool that has a zip cutter with replaceable blades, oxygen wrench, and I believe a glass breaker that weighs 1oz already. You'll probably never use the glass breaker on any because if you need to break glass you will probably want/have a specialized tool for that. The only useful thing you would be missing is the ring cutter, which probably has a specialized tool for that in the field, but for edc it has no real practical use. If you want to make the xshear into a multitool, I've also seen attachments that go onto the handle of your shears that include the zip cutter, and oxygen wrench. My opinion is that the xshears are better than the raptors because there are no hotspots when using them, however from my tests the leatherman ones seemed to cut a teeny tiny bit better, but the advantage of ergonomics, being easier to clean, and weight far out weighs the cool factor, and being better at cutting by a miniscule amount. If I weren't me, I could also add in that the xshears are less than half the price of the raptors, but I own both mainly because the raptors are too cool not to collect.
Why would you buy something than buy the attacments later when you have something that is an all in one already? Unless maybe you only wanted the one of the attachments and not all of them. As for window breaker why would you need a special one of the one on the tool works which I assume does. This saves time weight and having more items on you and that is reason having attachments on an item and cost in the long run. Also the leather fold up and have a pouch which you can carry easier. Is this good for everyday use of course not but is a very nice feature to have if tight on space. If you are just using it for just the sheer value I can see valid point of paying less and just marginally less better but money should not be an issue if it saves time and it serves the need of what you are looking for. The weight can be a factor but that will happen because of the extra accessories on it. It teally depends on what reason one or the other.

That ring cutter is absolutely essential in the field…and is used more often than you might think in hospital. Time is often essential.
When you need a ring cutter, you need it Right Now. (A jammed ring may trap someone in their burning vehicle, or it may cut off blood circulation to the finger. The first is a life or death problem. The second could cost someone his or her finger, if left untreated. Not to mention - a ring on a badly swollen finger is extraordinarily painful!) In any case, that feature is no afterthought. Leatherman intends it to work, to work well, and to work every time…under repeated use, for the life of the tool. Ask any medical professional, or any bench jeweler - some of whom are on call to deal with extreme cases. (You wouldn’t believe the dumb things some people try to do with rings. I’ll leave that to your imagination. You’ll probably guess right on the first try.)
In any case, it should never break during use. The company will want to know that it did; and they will probably thank you for telling them. (It’s most likely a problem in heat treatment, which could affect EMTs and ER Nurses who depend on their Raptors every day.)

In my mind these aren’t really the same tool. Similar. But the Raptors are very emergency response specific in their design, whereas the Parashears seem like they are meant for survival or all around EDC with those additional tools. I feel like they both have their place, but not the same place.

Good comparison, in fairness to the SOG's lack of pocket clip.... I have the Raptor and carry mine loose in my trouser pocket, so given that closed they have a similar sihouette the SOG could probably be used/carried in that manner. Again great video, cheers.
We're mulling over both of these for EMS week gifts. The Raptors are $79-plus, the SOG $63 with free shipping. For something that will be easy to lose on a chaotic scene in the dark. Like a crowded beach full of drunks like we have a few times a year. Regular trauma shears from somewhere in Asia are a dime a dozen. One of the helicopter services throws them out like pens and mouse pads. Few folks even carry anything remotely like a multi-tool. They're too cool to carry anything on a belt, especially females (you know its true). I can barely make the females on my shift wear a radio. Some kids tend to go into a house empty-handed. I stomp them like roaches (after the call). Some are almost too cool to carry their own pen or notecards, but always seem to need mine. A few younger guys have Raptors on those fire dept. radio slings, which are just another (but somehow cooler) version of the rookie batbelt that we like to laugh about. Yeah I have one, been using it 35 years. If you get to sleep at work and don't wear a radio sling or batbelt, its hard to keep low chute-times if you have to load up your pockets before getting out the door. The alternative is to sleep with hard items in your pockets, sleeping fully clothed. Losing a Raptor on a scene would be like losing a Littman stethoscope. Stuff grows legs and walks, especially pretty toys.
I'm a box medic and I vote for spending an extra $15 for the quality of the Leatherman; I use mine ALL the time and don't like to be on shift without it - also, the rookie batbelt thing is hilarious and at one point I was just as guilty of that as all of the newer guys but at this point in my career (almost 10 years), the only things I really need are a flashlight and my Raptor, my most-used tool. Also, I bought a bright baby blue Littman so I could easily recognize it as mine 😎 I haven't managed to lose it yet but I know what you're saying lol

As a medic who uses the raptors...
Get friendly with your hospital's autoclave. The SOG looks like it should be reasonably clean-able but you will never get under the buttons on the raptors. They have to be autoclaved .
They also pretty much can't be taken apart (I have broken several star bits trying to budge the center bolt) and the toothed profile means that they can't really be sharpened without needle files. also, the thick blade means that as the pivot loosens over time, you can't straighten the blade like you could with the SOG.
Also, Leatherman has left me high and dry on support for it. I'm a very unhappy customer for the raptors after years of tolerating them. Toolcrib here's awesome video sold me on trying the parshears, which have a lifetime warranty and SOG offers 50% off for first responders.

@@LittleUrbanPrepper The only thing that the raptors had going for them was that absolutely perfect belt system. If leatherman just made a belt clip that held a standard pair of penny cutters like they do the raptors, I'd buy that thing in a heartbeat.
As it stands, the SOG have been easier to clean and more durable than the leatherman raptors. If a compact, folding trauma shear is important yo someone, I'd point them that direction.
You can take the raptors apart VERY easily to clean them and put them back together. You can also sharpen one of the blades on them (the smooth edged blade) but not the micro-serrated edge blade as the serrations are so tiny not even a needle file would be able to sharpen them. The good thing about the serrations though is that they grab the material you are trying to cut and prevent that material from “slipping” forward as you cut. That being said you can get them sharpened by leatherman. I will personally just sharpen the smooth side until they don’t cut anymore, then get them serviced by Leatherman.

The leatherman also has a lifetime warranty on them where they will take care of any issue you have with them including sharpness. I’m not sure but I don’t think SOG offers that. But great partial review on both of the products.
The Leatherman is a winner any day. The SOG is a lighter weight tool and has gimmicky features.
As a paramedic, the raptors win purely because of the ring cutter. The cutters we carry on the ambulance are horrible. It’s not the most common emergency, but the ring cutter on the raptors blow away any commercial cutter I’ve seen.
Yeah. As of 08/22/2023 the price of the Leatherman Raptor is $99.00 Plus Your States Sales tax. Still worth it, as these shears are top notch. They will do what they are designed to do. I would recommend them to anyone serious about Trauma Shears.

@@txtoolcrib I am a paramedic and will never use the garbage $5 shears. I have both the xshear and raptor but i mainly carry the raptor on my person because the pocket carry ability with the clip is really compact and low profile. The cheap shears have failed too many times and hurt your fingers too because of how badly they cut, you have to squeeze excessively hard. I don't have time to trifle with POS shears and worry about whether I'm going to have to find a second pair of shears in the heat of treatment because the garbage pair wouldn't cut. If you have a nice pair of shears, you shouldn't lose them. You put it back where it came from after you use it, you don't just set them down or hand them to people without making sure you get it back immediately after they're done.

If you seek tool to cut clothing you must check S-Cut tool family. They may not be the smallest, but they cut even thick clothes like butter.
Some employers might not allow the SOG because it has blades other than the shear, itself. I've worked in a few hospitals that would fire you for it.

Almost the same as macgyver bryan I bought a knife from them last year and not even 20 min into owning it the pocket clip turned into the handle of the knife destroyed the pocket clip slot by deforming the g10 scales or whatever it was made of and snapped the clip. Long story short most of there knives ive found only have a single screw holding the pocket clip on which causes a pivot point. Ive never seen this on "quality" knives I own crkt buck kershaw and they all use 2 screws to hold there clips on. Sog denied any warranty or replacement or guarantee it wouldn't happen again

They begrudgingly sent it after almost pleading. It was traded for something. Almost too bad it was was fun flipping it. The Free P4 is just as fun.

The so called rope or seat belt cutter is completely useless tool for any multitool. I could only see little use for anglers and only when it is always accessible ie outside. Your very good presentation showed it clearly. It is much easier to cut the seat belt or rope with shears or serrated blade like on Victorinox RescueTool.
They cut rolled gauze very well, same thing with Paracord. And yeah, it's kinda dumb to have it on a layperson's multi-tool, but it doesn't have a risk of accidentally cutting the patient like a serrated blade.
The leatherman is right handed and the SOG appears to be ambidextrous!

I used the Raptors on my years of fire service and I loved them. Things pretty much cut through anything i had to get through. Jeans, leather boots, thick jackets and so on. After a while though i did notice they sort of dulled out a little so they’re just sitting in a drawer. But i would still recommend that tool to ANYONE wether its for Duty or EDC. Well worth it

@@Genesislights not this time, because the pivot for the blades is not at the same location as the pivot point for the compound leverage gears. So it opens up fairly quickly, which is why I believe you lose the benefit of the compound leverage to begin with.

The video where it shows the ineffectiveness of the glass break on the SOG.... when it comes to such tool, it's never meant to move or it will just close on itself like what was shown on the video.
Pretty good video. However, for a "fair" comparison, you should have used the new Raptor shears instead of your old ones. I fully understand the reason for not doing that. But anything that the SOG "won" on, it could be that the SOG is better, or it could be that the Raptor needed sharpened.
As for the out of place tools on the SOG, I think they did that for marketing reasons. It doesn't matter that they are not very useful for this sort of tool, it allows them to call say the SOG has 11 tools.

The Lansky guided rod jig works well.
I was going to suggest/ask for a similar video. General maintenance for multi tools. I have particular trouble getting serrated blade and awl back in good shape after a tough job.

Manufacturers of Leatherman Raptor and SOG Parascessers should donate their items for review to the ocean-conservation-namibia. What better way to test both scissors under salt water, sand conditions while cutting off different sizes of fishing lines entangled on the seal while holding down a scared, angry wild seal. So far I have seen them only Leatherman Raptor type used to the the fishing lines. This is an actual field test.

How tight should the pivot on the Leatherman be? When I got mine I felt that it was unusually difficult to open and close the blades to make cuts. I tried loosening the pivot a bit but ran into issues with the blades separating and not cutting near the pivot, so I tightened it back up. I'm assuming there is meant to be a little play between the blades when they are fully open? The blades on my pair "meet up" around the 4cm mark on the ruler. Does anyone have any insight on what the "correct" pivot tightness should be on these?
The Leatherman is great. You can cut a full motorcycle jacket with it. That is the most useful feature I have needed the most at the ER. If the parashears are as well cutting, I might consider them in the future. Ergonomics don't count for me, performance does. As long as I do not have t o use the standard issue shit the hospital gives us. You are cutting some fucking cords with things to made to save people. Cut some actual motorcycle jacket, so we could actually see the difference. I know the Leatherman is better, because of the wider blade... 😏

To me, this is a no brainer. Common sense to me since Victorinox's blend of stainless is so corrosion resistant. I see no excuse for Victorinox not making a full size set of scissors or trauma sheers. With the way people go nuts over mirror polish officer Swiss steel. I can't imagine why this product wouldn't be graciously received by consumers. I bet Diezelle57 and Ben would be first in line to get ahold of a Raptor style Victorinox. Even if it was a Fiskar sewing sheer type of scissor from Victorinox. I could definitely see Ben Jonesing to get a set for himself. 😆

When you cut the rope that was thick the red rope when you use the sog you were cutting the Rope towards the far end of the blades. When you use the Raptor you cut nearer to the pivot of the two blades which is always going to cut better than if you go farther out near the end of the blades. I think that was very biased I'm not sure what to think. You seem to already have your mind made up that raptor is going to be better than a sog

I learned the hard way you don't use either of these for cutting cardboard; you use the Skeletool instead, which so far has not let me down yet, especially with its Bit Kit which only adds functionality.
I used to work in a restaurant and would regularly use my Raptor for cutting open cardboard boxes, well over time that caused problems with both the screw and somehow part of the handle too. MAYBE I got a lemon (that does happen) but when Leatherman themselves acknowledges at least one design flaw and then OMITS FEATURES from their "redesign", that's a problem.
You need aviation snip to cut cut cardboard.

comfort doesn't really matter because it takes less than a minute to cut the cloth. it you're cutting the clothes of 5-6-10 people then comfort is important

SOG in the open position inside the case still exposes the blade... Kinda no point to carry it tat way when you are likely to soil, or knock it on yourself or someone else in that exposed manner.

I’ve carried the raptor for quite a while, only beef I have is when the sheers get dull, they won’t cut a piece of gauze, the raptors are geared toward emt/firefighters... ive used the seat belt cutter to cut jeans off patients, used the O2 rectangle to turn tanks on and off, sheers to cut clothing etc. they’ve been great, my second pair has stayed sharp being the first pair was used and have no idea what they cut with them lol, I carry mine folded in the carrier... the SOG has too much garbage to be useful medical wise, looks like they just put some regular cheap trauma sheer blades on them and useless trinkets in the handle
I think I agree with everything you just said. Seems like SOG was trying to do too much with this one. Better to leave it simplified for the target demographic.

I bought the Leatherman Raptor the week they hit the market. Had it sitting in the side pocket of my drivers door on my truck. I took my truck in to get an alignment. When I got my truck back I noticed that they were gone. I about had a come apart with the manager. After about a 20 minute rant, the mechanic magically found them on the ground. Apparently, they had “fallen” out of the truck door when he got in it. Uh huh 🤔!

And have been broken into a couple of times. So now, anything valuable goes in there, especially when it’s not parked at work or at home.

How do you sharpen the shears?
Know this is a year late... from my experience in USR, the raptors are better at the heavier materials: boot leather, laces, upolstery, and different cordage.
Get yourself some Knipex pliers edc. Scissors for wire cutting?! The right tool for the job. Wonders why they’re dull …
I have plenty of Knipex products. I also don’t generally use the Raptor for cutting wire, which it can handle with ease by the way. Finally, mine are slightly dull because I use them.
Only Raptor. all the others don't come even close.
This test would have been interesting while wearing the thin nitrile gloves that most medics wear and compare the damage to the gloves after testing. It seems like the locking mechanisms of the SOG would destroy the gloves easily. The ability to clean the tool as well as the sheath on the Leatherman would be a major plus from a medical use point of view. The addition of a bottle opener to every multitool seems like pure insanity to me. If I had a multi purpose tool with no bottle opener I can guarantee you I could open a bottle using one of the other tools.

I've been using a raptor as a medic for about 7 years
I fucking hate it.
For starters, the ergos on the raptor are utter dogshit. Trying to get through a motorcycle rider's full suit with them is absolute agony. Hotspots everywhere. I can hand on heart say they're the most uncomfortable penny cutters I have ever used.
Second, they don't keep an edge very well. They also have a really weak pivot that eventually works enough play into the blade that it doesn't close no matter what, and the torx fasteners might as well be rivets. The thick ass blade makes them very not maneuverable in the material you're cutting, particularly motorcycle leathers through CE padding.
Leatherman won't even fucking sharpen them anymore. You can't even PAY them to sharpen them, and sharpening the teeth is a bitch, requires some tiny needle files and a vise.
The other issue is that they are nightmares to clean. So many moving parts, everything gets nasty and you better start your shift by autoclaving the thing. The o2 wrench works, but not always great - isolette under-mount o2 tanks are NOT easy for it, but it can do the job.
I don't know why anyone would use the glass breaker. I've used it in testing on a wrecker car and it HURT. Even with bunker gloves. Get a keychain size spring loaded punch or a carbide metal punch.
The ring cutter is worthless, I chowdered it immediately trying to cut mild steel wire (we have better ring cutter saws in the kit but I am a magician with dental floss anyways) and the seatbelt ripper is just a derp stupid tool when the scissors do the job.
The ONE and only thing I say it does well is the carry system, the open/closed carry and adjustable belt clip are great. The pocket clip is too stiff to use regularly, and you don't want to out a dirty set of penny cutters in your pocket anyways.
They also don't seem to be very corrosion resistant. I have cheap stamped cutters that didn't rust half as fast as these did.
I keep them because they sorta still work on the first 2/3 of the blade (the rest doesn't bite anymore since the pivot is worn out, which happened within the first year) and the o2 wrench, plus the nice belt carry. But I hate them and would NEVER recommend anyone pay money for them.
It pisses me off because they have kind of soured me on the Leatherman brand. Leatherman doesn't support them for shit and in YEARS since making them, they haven't addressed any of the design flaws, yet they keep selling them.
I'm very interested in the SOG to be honest. The Leatherman is such a low bar to clear, I can't see how they could ever be worse.
This begs the question. If you hate them so much, why have you carried them for seven years? I have products that I have purchased which I ended up not liking. Either I would sell them or stop using them altogether.
@@txtoolcrib they were a gift from a partner, so I couldn't just get rid of them, and for the first couple years, Leatherman WOULD sharpen them, so even though they dulled fast, I could get the toothed edge freshened up.
They still sort of work, so because of the phenomenal belt clip, I will pull them out for less critical work that I can suffer them chewing on, and they still work as an oxygen wrench.
And I don't sell or give away things to people that I know are junk. The raptor is junk and Leatherman doesn't support it or it's users for a damn. Which is frustrating, because that belt carry is absolute genius and there's serious potential.
As it is, your awesome overviews on so many multitools has convinced me to buy the SOG shears and their mini multi tool - SOG gives first responders 50% off, and the lifetime warranty is peace of mind.
What woukd be absolutely killer, would be one of these shears to have replaceable blades. I'd love that.

Also wanted to thank you for your review on the roxon storm s801s. That little beast might be the most powerful "everyday" multi tool I've ever used. It goes on my belt next to the raptors, and once my powerpint waivers, will be retired to my car's emergency kit. That compound lever on the corkscrew is genius, giving a true waiter's friend. I wish corkscrews on multi tools were more common. I drink a lot of wine on vacation!
The SOG are more comfortable be far, however... I find that the blades on the sheer bend under extreme stress, and the blades move apart, this means it takes a lot longer to get through tough materials.
I primarily use my sheers for utility purposes, not first aid, so the leatherman works better for me.
It's a shame LM isn't backing these as good as they used to...
LM used to be a great company but I fear they are following the pack when it comes to customer service.
Also, 420 HC and 440HC just don't cut it anymore (get it)
LM needs to update their steel if they want to keep charging premium prices...

@@tawmifm They are half the weight of the multitools, and you have an extra 2-3oz to work with for adding more tools, while having better ergonomics, they work way better than the sog ones, and on par with the leatherman ones. On top of the the only difference in tools between the xshears, and the leatherman is a ring cutter, oxygen wrench, zip cutter, and a glass breaker. Leatherman sells a tool that has a zip cutter with replaceable blades, oxygen wrench, and I believe a glass breaker that weighs 1oz already. You'll probably never use the glass breaker on any because if you need to break glass you will probably want/have a specialized tool for that. The only useful thing you would be missing is the ring cutter, which probably has a specialized tool for that in the field, but for edc it has no real practical use. If you want to make the xshear into a multitool, I've also seen attachments that go onto the handle of your shears that include the zip cutter, and oxygen wrench.
My opinion is that the xshears are better than the raptors because there are no hotspots when using them, however from my tests the leatherman ones seemed to cut a teeny tiny bit better, but the advantage of ergonomics, being easier to clean, and weight far out weighs the cool factor, and being better at cutting by a miniscule amount.
If I weren't me, I could also add in that the xshears are less than half the price of the raptors, but I own both mainly because the raptors are too cool not to collect.
Why would you buy something than buy the attacments later when you have something that is an all in one already? Unless maybe you only wanted the one of the attachments and not all of them. As for window breaker why would you need a special one of the one on the tool works which I assume does. This saves time weight and having more items on you and that is reason having attachments on an item and cost in the long run. Also the leather fold up and have a pouch which you can carry easier. Is this good for everyday use of course not but is a very nice feature to have if tight on space. If you are just using it for just the sheer value I can see valid point of paying less and just marginally less better but money should not be an issue if it saves time and it serves the need of what you are looking for. The weight can be a factor but that will happen because of the extra accessories on it. It teally depends on what reason one or the other.
I guess if you are an electrician, good review. EMS review horrible, use clothes, a belt , leather shoes , seat belt, go to a junk yard .
