- The keys to staying strong and independent ☝🏼
The best tools you have are strength and balance.
In this video, Dr. Alyssa Kuhn, physical therapist and osteoarthritis specialist shows you three best full body strengthening movements to keep you independent. The exercises can help at any age but become increasingly more important as you get older.
Each of these three exercises have options both to increase and decrease difficulty based on your current fitness levels and the presence of pain (if applicable). Full body strength is incredibly important and maintaining both upper and lower body strength as well as balance is key to thriving through daily life, reducing the need for assistance.
Each of these exercises works multiple muscles at once, primarily the hips, knees, shoulders and core- all incredibly important to support you in day to day activities and adventures too.

So glad you like the video!
@ Not enough people talk about prevention!!! It’s always move to surgery when it’s knees hips or shoulders.
Your videos show your depth of knowledge in exercises appropriate for older or less fit individuals. I have never been able to kneel on my knees with legs bent at 90 degrees. In my early 50s, after dislocation ( misdiagnosed and dismissed as a knee sprain) diagnosed by x-ray, I was informed by an orthopedist of the still partial dislocation and suspected congenital malformation in both knees. Given modified exercises. And spinal issues due to a childhood injury dismissed as a sprain in childhood was shown in my 50s by a neurologist to be disc degeneration and healed fractures of 2 lumbar bones. I am grateful for advances in technology but I have not been so fortunate with PT.
Many exercises for seniors say to kneel or get on the floor or knees, which at 70, is not practical for me. Modifications you show make it possible for anyone, of any ability, to do small adjustments and keep building strength. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you like the channel so much!
The last move is perfect for balance!THANK YOU
You are welcome!
Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity!!!💖💖💖
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
I’m going to try this today
Best of luck!
I needed this video because my knee looks swollen since I had replacement surgery in 2016. It is not because I have not been active. I ride my bicycle up to 30 miles 5 times a week. I have done bike trips several times sleeping in a tent etc. Plus, I work out 3-5 times a week with resistance weight machines at the PF. It is larger than my good knee still by 20% I would guess. I don't think people notice it unless they look closely. When I pull back on the back of my pants to show people the difference, they are surprised. We tried the draining routine to no avail. I just keep doing my PT exercises after all of these years. You learn to adapt and overcome. Somedays, the knee hurts even worse after exercise, so prudence is important. I am 70 now but respond well to attractive female advice like you. 👏
Good job
Endless thanks!❤
I appreciate your kind words! Thanks for watching and the comment.
Thank you for this... I am 57 but my body feels so much older. I have weak muscles but find it so hard to get motivated to do the work outs. Your encouragement and instruction on these exercises makes me feel hopeful that maybe I can do it. I want to gain strength and my balance back. God bless.
You got this!
Love your enthusiasm. Thanks for giving up "older ones" hope for our future.
This channel is for brighter futures!
I do not think you realize just how great an inspiration you are to me. Why? Because you are so easy to look at. You certainly are easy on the eyes. You have the greatest legs on the YT as well.
Thank you. Your advice is extremely helpful@
Glad it was helpful!

As always, thank you so much❤
You are so welcome!

You're so welcome!
Love these exercises! Wondering if there are some good exercises for knee and hip arthritis using a TRX? I have used mine extensively for upper body workouts and some assisted squats.
Amazing!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Alyssa, thanks for the exceptional advice. I'm a 68yr old woman hurt my right knee have a tear in my medial meniscus and a 2nd degree tear in my mcl. So acute over chronic osteoarthritis. I love Qigong and am well used to doing horse stance etc. However didn't get an mri until 2months after injury as Dr sent me for xrays which of course only shows the osteoarthritis. I knew there was something amiss as the pain was quite steep but because I hadn't a proper diagnosis I continued qigong and hill walking pushing through the pain. That's our generation push through regardless. I ended up getting mri due to unbearable pain. Now it's 3 months on and still can be very painful at night. I know you can't give individual advice. Do you by any chance do online consultations? I'm also wondering if you think that this video would be good for me to follow thanks Alyssa greetings from Ireland ❤
Hi! I don't do online consultations. I have my membership, Adventures for Life, where we have Q&As throughout the year.
Excellent-- I will try these!
Best of luck with them!
Have been watching your content regularly and it is absolutely is the most amazing and simple solution to most issues
Thank you
Carry on
Happy to help!
I looking for neck arthritis exercise, but decided to stop and watch this one. I’ve been doing the balance exercise in my arthritis class. Not sure why she doesn’t have us doing sit to stands. Thanks.
Glad you like the video!
Your content has been sooo helpful to me. I am rehabbing a meniscus tear and I have osteoarthritis, which started in the injured knee and now is present in both. The pain from the injury is almost gone, but I am dealing with stiffness in both knees. I walk three times a day and use an exercise bike to lubricate my joints before my first morning walk. I'll focus on these exercises and see if they help eliminate the stiffness in my knees. Any tips would be wonderful.
So glad you've seen such a benefit with the videos! Here are a few knee stiffness videos you can check out next. ruclips.net/video/7dcrc7vg-4Y/видео.html. ruclips.net/video/N9I7hD_rJyg/видео.html. ruclips.net/video/LNKSANae2K8/видео.html

Please make a video of exercises for herniated disc and for spinal flexibility.
I will add that idea to the list of potential future videos.
Would these be good to start in your 40s to go in strong to your older years?
Yes absolutely!
I cannot get out of the chair for the squats without using the arms of the chair. Am I still getting the benefit if I use the arms? Doesn't feel like I am.
using the arms is okay but raising the seating surface can also help to increase the amount of work done by the legs

Inherently yes, but depends how far out and how recovery is going.
Would you say it's ok to do push ups with carpal tunnel?🤔

hard to rest...everything posted...oh..we'd go to MARCH AIRFORCE BASE and exercise on those bikes then I'd walk the indoor tracks and we'd select different machines to work on...my favorite...lying down pushing with both legs that weight to strengthen my right federal region...he preferred that upper body weight where you stand and pull that weight up to ceiling strengths triceps, etc...
Thank you! ❤
