  • Reviewing a 2017 Yamaha 20 hp outboard motor. After 15 years of running a fussy 18 Merc 2 stroke I picked up a new 4 stroke 20 Yamaha. Also worth noting - CHANGE OIL after initial 10 hour break in. Mine was not pretty when we changed it. Also - a major downfall in the Suzuki is the location of the oil filter. Yamaha is a fairly straight forward oil change. Filter easy to access as is oil drain.

    Excellent review, thank you. I'm looking at buying one of these 2017 Yamaha F20's right now (still a new motor, dealer just happens to have an older year model in stock for a lower price than the newer ones). I'm running a 1960 Alumacraft FD, 15~ foot V hull, generally with myself, my wife, and our 4 year old, think it'd get up and go pretty decent? Have you had any maintenance issues or anything with this one since you bought it?

      Chris you won’t go wrong with this motor. I run premium only and fuel stabilizer thru it at the end of the season. Bad fuel is your biggest enemy.

  • @doughackett695
    @doughackett695 5 лет назад +3

    The Yamaha 20 is now available with fuel injection. Nice feature for a nice compact quiet motor. No carb or choke to deal with. Can't wait to buy and use one on my boat.

    • @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194
      @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194  5 лет назад +2

      That’s awesome. It was only a matter of time for Yamaha to jump on efi. No choke on my 4 stroke carb model tho. Just pump the fuel bulb and pull the recoil.

    • @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194
      @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194  5 лет назад +3

      It looks like the new F20B motor is just a tuned down 25 efi as they’re both 432cc and 126lbs. The 20 hp carb model is still 390cc and @ 15lbs lighter. I’d just spend the few extra bucks and go with the 25. It’s like the 15hp which is the same motor as the F20, but tuned down and price pointed for nothing more than marketing. I tried the 15 before and found it sluggish at the top end.

      Doug Hackett how much more is the 25? The only reason I ask is I shopped around to a few different Yamaha dealers when I bought my F20. I saved $400 when I showed one dealer what I was quoted on a Suzuki 20 efi.

    • @doughackett695
      @doughackett695 5 лет назад +1

      @@granteditslifeoutdoors.9194 I went with the 20 efi because I thought it would vibrate less than the 25 at idle speed. If you view videos on the 25 you will see that it vibrates a lot at idle speed and that is the speed I will use the most because I bought it for fishing. I can tell yours runs very quiet and smooth so you ended up with a very nice motor. I hope mine vibrates a lot less than the 25. I will let you know after I try it. I paid only $4400. plus tax so I can not complain. The fish will have to just swim a little faster to catch up to me because if you advance the throttle just sightly the 25 and 20 efi smooth right out. The attached video shows the vibration. I am in the process of trying to exchange it for something that will better fit my needs. I am 66 and just want to troll around the lake slowly so should have went with the 9.9 high thrust. A lot less money and 35 pounds lighter. ruclips.net/video/_b7wle4btDg/видео.html

    Hi Grant! How would you compare the displacement of your new 20 four stroke to the old Mercury 2 stroke? I’m looking to replace an old 20HP Johnson 2 stroke with a Tohatsu 20HP 4 stroke, but am worried the boat won’t plane as well.

      Keith I really love my Yamaha, but the old 18 Merc did have some spunk. With two in my boat it planes no issue. I’d say the Tohatsu should do just fine on a 14’

    • @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194
      @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194  5 лет назад

      It was an educated guess. But yes, you can add a tach if you deem necessary. I believe the Yamaha dealer advised half throttle or less. Most importantly, don’t wait longer than recommended for first oil change.

    How shallow can you get with the motor itself? Im presuming you have a 15 or 16" transom. Looking for a motor that can at least idle in 1ft of water and above (fishing the gulf so its a pain in the ass)

    • @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194
      @granteditslifeoutdoors.9194  3 года назад

      Swift-ツツ-Toxic I can run this motor in what they call “shallow drive”. There are 3 settings I believe. I lift it into this setting when approaching shore or running unknown waters. In shallow drives top notch the prop is just barely below the surface, so 1ft may be possible. 15” transom on this Lund.

      Yes Dgmt78, pretty happy with it. That 25 EFI would have been even better ! Not sure where you're at, but did you ask how to fog that motor with your dealer? Yamaha oil change pretty easy too - do that after 10 hrs!. I looked at the oil filter on the Suzuki and it would be a big operation to get that out.

      Grant L I don't yet have 10hrs, but will in the Spring. I just used the Yamaha Fogging spray into the air intake and it worked great. The dealer uses a cocktail of fluids and runs it through. But the spray worked for me.

      Thanks for review. I have the same story got tired of old 20hp Mercury. I put a 25 carb on it to get me 20mph here in Co at 6000 feet and 19mph at higher elevation. But it's hard starting at elevation, ordered a 25hp 2017 Yami off fleabay scratch and dent. Cost was same as 20hp.
      Gong in 16x72 mirrocraft same setup as yours.
      Looking fwd to it, this yammie has big shoes to fill with proven Mercury even though it's old runs faster than some 4 strokes of same size.

    Listen..!! This F20 Yamaha as more than 362 cc like was the previous ones till 2020. it's now got 462 cc and the displacement is worth to see , because now you can maximise your propeller to the max with a big pitch. and you have the same motor as the F25 witch is also 462 cc.
    Amazing stuff again as you can convert your F20 to a F25 by changing the computer Box and the spacer in the air intake box...

    Nice video. Yamaha makes a nice outboard motor. The only problem with the 20hp and under is no EFI.
    Eventually... Ethanol will be a problem.
    Suzuki offers EFI motors 9.9hp and up!

      6 NORTH OUTDOORS I agree on EFI and this was a big factor in decision making, but I chose old school carb. I’ll guess Yamaha will go this way on the 20 and under soon. I’m taking militant precautions on fuel.
      Yamaha had larger displacement on 20 hp. Plus have you seen where the oil filter is on the Suzuki? They are both great motors.
