Good tips. I had no idea that my freezer could be removed. YES! Love all the little things I discover thru your videos... always some good nuggets... even after owning a Rpod for 3 years,
I load a couple freezer gel blocks (frozen) along with the food when starting out instead of pre-cooling the unit. If room, I leave blocks in the fridge when camping and then transfer to a cooler with leftovers to keep them cold for the short trip from RV storage lot to home. Ely
Thank You John. A very helpful video. I hope you can do a video on the Dometic Thermostat in the future along with the heater and AC unit. We slug our way through trying to figure out the Thermostat almost every trip.
Nice video John! Yes that refrigerator is small, I liked the viewers comment about traveling using the battery instead of gas, I always thought it was somewhat unsafe to pull into a gas station with that refrigerator running on gas. We just got home from Petoskey state park this weekend, there were 6 R-pods in the park. We have a 190 and love it! I haven’t figured out the radio on it yet, hoping you will do a video on it some day?
Carl, I also use battery while traveling and haven't had any issue. Petoskey State Park is a nice place for sure. I hope to get back up there sometime coming up. Curious which model year you have? My 2017 179 has the Jensen radio with the DVD player. The newer units have Furrion without the DVD and I couldn't review that one as I don't own it.
Glad I found your videosm John. Very helpful. My Dometic fridge suddenly stopped working on the electric connection , but works fine on gas. Have I probably got a fuse out? It alsio seems to work on the battery, just not when plugged in.
@@JohnMarucci Great. I think there are different slide out types for different r pod years. I know that there is a real possibility that this could happen, but I could never find a solution for the 179. Thanks, Glen
John, I look forward to your videos. As an R-Pod 190 owner (We call it a STARR-POD) I was wondering if you know what the max slope angle the fridge can be used on. We have a sloping driveway, and to get the trailer level, I really need to do some blocks under the truck to get it high enough, otherwise the trailer slope is about 6-7 degrees.
Joe, I do not know the max slope the refrigerator can work on. I do know it is recommended that the unit be level. I also have a slope to my driveway so when I have trailer at home I have to jack the front up considerably to get the unit level. One suggestion is to buy an eight-foot length 4x6 piece of pressure treated lumber from Home Depot and ask them to cut it into foot-long lengths. These make great props for your front jack and stabilizer jacks, especially on uneven terrain. Get pressure treated so they will last better in the elements. Hope this helps.
Thanks John. I did the pressure treated deal. I think our driveways are sloped similarly (if it’s the one in your videos). Makes me paranoid that tongue being up on stilts. It is also a pain to try and get it that high. Thanks again!
Although not covered in the video, I choose to run the fridge on 12V when traveling. My tow vehicle keeps the RV battery fully charged with my setup. I just do not like the idea of running propane when driving down the highway, but understand this is preferred by some. Ely
Thanks! I didn’t know there was a storage hold open on the door. We also use a indoor outdoor thermometer to monitor fridge temps. How cold does the Edge freezer get?
Rob, the Edge freezer gets well below zero. I think I remember seeing -20 degrees Fahrenheit! I'll likely do a review on the product coming up. Thanks again for watching and for your comments!
Thanks John, have followed your videos and learned a lot, even reinforces that I am doing things right! However, we are having problems keeping the fridge cooler than 40 degrees to outside temps. IE, if 85 out the fridge will be 45. I usually take the outside panels off to allow more air flow, and watch the water level in cup. All in all I am unhappy with ability to cool in a warm climate, and we primarily travel south for winter.
Paul, sorry to hear this. I have had some issues when it is very hot out and the sun is beating down on the slide out side of the 179 (vent side of the fridge). Hi, John. We need to leave our RPod 192 for a week, but we'd like to leave the refrigerator on, if possible. It seems like the propane will last for the week, but will our 12V battery (or two of them?) last if we have the refrigerator on "gas" so the battery is only used as an igniter? Thanks.
Hey John, when the fridge is plugged from shore power does the propane automatically kick on? Or is it a manual change. I’ve heard both but can’t get it to swap automatically
Hi John. Thank you for sharing your wealth of RPod knowledge with us. You are our go-to person ! We recently purchased a portable freezer/fridge and like the fact that we can now remove the Dometic freezer compartment. After doing so, how do we reset the freezer section to operate as part of the fridge?
Brenda, you should just be able to reinsert the freezer compartment into the fridge and it will cool down. If you noticed, there are a separate set on tines in the fridge in the freezer area. At this point, I generally only use the unit as a fridge, and like you, have a separate small freezer I bring with me. All the best.
John, Do you have a battery 8 AA's at the front digital control panel? I have the RM8501 but I have no power on the control panel. It's never worked with I purchased it from a seller. It's brand new but has never worked. I don't have the optional battery compartment in mine. Trying to figure out if it's needed
Marq, I don't have immediate access to my R-Pod to check this for you, but I am pretty sure my unit does not have the battery compartment. The panel works on 12v, so have you checked the fuse box at the converter to ensure no fuses are blown?
Woody if you look at timestamp 2:34 on the video you will see a picture of the lock. Just pause the video there. There is a small plastic tab that can be pushed up to disengage the door lock which will allow you to open the refrigerator without depressing the button. Hope this helps. Just remember to change it back before traveling unless you want the contents of your fridge on the floor! All the best!
John really liked the video. Was excited when I saw the portable freezer until I noticed it had to be plugged into shore power. Any recommendations for a small freezer that runs on propane? We have an rPod180.
Hi john, Excellent information. I just purchased a 2010 model 172 unit. The batter option no longer works but the 120 v and propane options work. The main problem is that the door does not close well and in fact fell right off its hinges on our first trip. There is evidence of a temporary spacer installed on the hinge pins. Do you have any advice on how to fix the door hinges and the lock that falls out? Perhaps a replacement fridge is the only answer.
Sounds like you may either need a replacement door or if you just want a new unit, replace it fully. It likely is the original and 10 years old at the point. Thanks!

John, fantastic videos! Thank you for doing these. I was wondering if you had any advice for traveling with food in in the fridge? Any ideas on how to keep things from bouncing around? Maybe bins, bungees, and command hooks?
If possible don’t have your RV tires at maximum pressure on the tire. This should lessen the jostling in the cab. For example, my Goodyear Endurance tires go up to 81 psi max pressure, but the trailer says 65 psi needed on the tires. So I set them to the trailer specs and get a much smoother ride. If roads are really bad, it won’t matter much, just be careful opening cabinets and the fridge when you arrive.
Hi John, I have a 2016 RP179, it has a Dometic RM 8501 installed, I have been looking for a circuit diagram for this fridge, have you a source for this information ?
The best I have is a link to the manual. I don’t see a diagram but there is content information on the last page: www.dometic.com/assets/18/22/operating%20manual_51822.pdf
John I really love the videos. They’re perfect for a first time RVer ike me. I’ve got the Rpod 191 and I cannot get the slide to move on the Demetric refrigerator to keep it open when in storage. I don’t want to break it so is there an easy trick or should I take it back to the dealer to cover the latch under warranty?
Barbara, my counsel if you can’t get the latch to keep the door open would be to use a small towel flipped over the door to ensure it doesn’t close while in storage. I would then put this on your punch list for the next visit to your dealer to be worked before your warranty period is completed. Thanks & all the best!
John, thanks for all your videos! New owner 176 (2018). I want to take the freezer out of the fridge to create more space. I looked for the mentioned link in the discription and couldn't find it. Do you have a link handy. Thanks again for your time and effort!
Eric, here is the link to the EdgeStar portable freezer: amzn.to/2UyQKGk. If I am misunderstanding what you are looking for, please let me know. While not at all cheap, the EdgeStar got temps of -20 degrees and colder when plugged in at the campsite, so ice cream is doable with it! I have greatly enjoyed it. It also fits under my truck's tonneau cover. All the best!
You sure can as long as your 7-pin connector from the Tow Vehicle is attached to keep the trailer battery charged while driving. I’ve done this over thousands of miles. All the best!
Can you please help John. I’m having a hard time finding a replacement light bulb for this fridge. Mine seemed to stop working. Very dim then dead. Have a link? Or what fridge model is this if I have to call dometic. Thanks.
Christopher, there should be a tag inside the fridge with the exact model and serial number of your Dometic fridge. You’ll need the model and serial number when you call them. Take a photo of it for reference. The number I have for Dometic is 1-800-544-4881. Thanks!
Not sure if I missed it on the video but the 3 ways of power all achieve the same goal, to heat up the boiler in the process of absorption. there is no compressor like what you would see with a household electric refer.
Ok John (or anyone else) showing my lack of smarts now... on the temp settings does the bigger led temp lights mean colder or the opposite? Did not hear mention of which is colder when you described it.
Yeah, it’s not intuitive at all. Would have been nice if they had stencilled something on the fridge making it more obvious what the lights actually mean. Thanks for the question and the answer.
New used rp178. I am a rookie. I ran a 120v extension cord to the camper. The fridge on ac power has the red hazard light flashing. I am afraid that when i pull this to the campground i will not have a fridge?
The fridge will need 30 amp shore power going to the converter to power the fridge on ac. You can use a dog bone connector to plug your 30 amp trailer power cord to a house outlet. When at the campsite, plug your 30-amp cord directly to the electric pedestal and it should work fine. If not, the fridge should work on propane in an emergency and uses very little fuel.
I absolutely love your videos. I recently bought the 191, just delivered a few days ago. Went out today to get fridge going and it starts beeping at me every 2 minutes approximately for say 20 seconds. I have tried to run it on electric, propane, and battery. Still same problem. I also tripped the circuit breakers still same problem. Everything else works fine. I tried furnace, stove, lights all work great. I did not leave fridge on so I am not even sure if it cools. Do you have any idea what is wrong?
Laura, on page 26 of my Domestic refrigerator manual there are a series of troubleshooting indicator light tests. It could be any number of issues. You should have a similar manual for your unit with similar troubleshooting tests. First, and easiest is to check that the door is closing fully and that storage door stop isn’t set to keep it from shutting. It could be several other things, including low battery voltage. If you can’t figure it out, call your dealer since it is brand new and under warranty. All the best.
Just wanted to give you an update on the fridge beeping. I contacted the RV store where I bought the R Pod they came right out to my house looked it over and determined the door was warped. When the door was closed if you looked at the seal closely you can see by a hair the light inside the fridge was on. So the will be replacing the door by next weekend. I have to say everyone has been just wonderful at the RV dealership. Thank you for you help and keep those videos coming.
John, do you have any idea of the 'typical' consumption rate of propane by a standard Dometic refrigerator? Our rPod has one 20 lb bottle....and I don't have a clue how long that will run the refrigerator (assuming we are not running the furnace, etc.). THANK YOU !! Bob in Grand Rapids
Bob, I have used the propane many times on the refrigerator when traveling and while I can't speak to exact usage amounts, it is a minor amount of propane used to keep the fridge cool. It is possible someone on the R-Pod owners forum has more accurate information: rpod-owner.com. Thanks!
Hi, i would like to buy one but just have a simple solar system, my last fridge ran on gas alone. I know tgese need to be hooked up to electric to work, could i just use one marine battery charged with a 100 watt panel? Thank you...
@JohnMarucci yes, I don't have enough solar power to run one, but i plan on investing. I think for now I can run a cable from the battery I have to just power the control panel. Seems a waste though.
Dusty, You will need to contact Dometic directly: 1-800-544-4881. The model is the RM 8501 for the R-Pod 179. My sticker has the product no of 00921712883. You should have a product stick inside the fridge. Mine was at the very back behind the removable drawer. Take a picture of it then call them and let them know what you need. Thanks!
My refrigerator currently is not working and the blue lights are flashing and the triangle is red. What do I need to do? Do you have any ideas. Thank you
I no longer have this refrigerator but here is a link to the manual. On pages 26 & 27 are the error codes: www.dometic.com/assets/18/22/operating%20manual_51822.pdf
RPOD RP 182G with Dometic M8501 that just quit cooling on Propane but electric still works. Blue pilot flame works but furnace dies not engage. Stumped!
I am pretty sure that is the same unit in all the smaller R-Pods. I take it that since you have seen the pilot light working that you have removed the outside panels to inspect the unit. Does your propane stove stay lit when using it? This is what I would check first as there may be a regulator issue with the propane at the tank (I assume you have plenty of propane), if the stove isn't staying lit. If the stove works fine, then it would likely be an issue at the unit itself. Feel free to let me know. Thanks!
@@JohnMarucci Thank you for responding John. I have gas per stove burners as you said. The yellow caution light isn’t telling me of a gas problem as it does when propane is low but the electrodes have been cleaned and even though the pilot functions it does not go the next step to combustion. So yes... there is an issue with the unit even though it functions perfectly under electric power.
Sorry to hear that it isn't just a simply Propane flow issue. I just saw a thread on the R-Pod owners forum on a very similar issue that may interest you: www.rpod-owners.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=14712&KW=refrigerator&PID=143263&title=fridge-on-propane-failure#143263
Thanks again. And yes that was of interest. Since my flame comes on and stays on and burns a clean blue I don’t think my issue is exactly the same. I could be wrong. It appears to me a temp signal is not being sent or received that signals “kick on”. Would that be in a board. A facebook RPod Group member said he recalls having these symptoms requiring a ‘board’ needing replaced several years back. Unfortunately I am several hours away from anyone who could diagnose that. I don’t even know where the board is at.
Good question of which I haven't had to do before. I'll have to point you the owners forum: rpod-owners.com. Hopefully someone on the forum has done this. Thanks!
Hi John, I'm a new owner of a 2019 179 (just took possession 3 days ago) and your videos have been invaluable. Thank you! I am having trouble finding your Amazon storefront. Are you still doing this? Can you provide a link? I created a private list where I have been linking suggestions from the various forums and would love to see your storefront. Thanks again for all the great information!
We are having a problem with the fridge in our 2016 R-Pod 179, where the gas fault alarm goes off during the night when we are running in propane mode. If I reset it, it lasts 5 minutes and then the alarm sounds again. The fridge runs fine all day in propane mode, we only have this problem in the middle of the night. Any ideas?
Mike, that sounds unusual for sure. I would post this on the R-Pod Owners forum and see if anyone else has had the same issue... www.rpod-owners.com/default.asp
Just recently did a three hour trip to a state park. Freezer was at -22 when we left and 15 degrees when we plugged back into to shore power at the campsite. I was very pleased with how it retained the temperature. I transported it full of frozen goods and in its box in the truck bed. Hope this helps!
Carl, if I am not mistaken, I think some of the 2018's may have the Jensen like mine and later they changed them to the newer Furrion without the DVD player. If you have the Jensen with the DVD player, I have the same model and plan to do a video at some point here on using it. Thanks again!
Mike, if you bought it second hand, maybe ask the previous owner if they still have it. Otherwise I would contact a local R-Pod dealer to get one ordered. On the other hand, the freezer unit is fairly small in the Dometic Fridge in the Pod and can be fully removed, which is what I do often - given I have a small 1.1 cu. ft. Edgestar portable freezer I tote with me. Something to think about.
@@JohnMarucci i just removed mine for the first time after having the RPod for two months and boy am I glad I did. So much more room for fridge items. I’ll deal without a freezer.
I don’t really like the idea of the propane frig, especially with an open flame in a park that hasn’t had rain for a long time I’d wish all manufacturers would go to a compressor type refrigerators 12 volt/ 110 even because they use less energy and more efficient
Larry, I think the propane fridge is fairly enclosed within the camper, but I do understand the concern. As far as a compressor fridge, that would use more current, which is generally why I think the manufacturers use these in most RVs. Thanks for the comment!
There IS such a thing as 3 way fridges? My boss made me sound dumb. I said this guy wants a 3 way fridge from us. He said, "There is no such thing as a 3-way." I looked back at the box and either I or one of the other workers wrote 3-way on the box. In my mind I was like, Alright. I guess I'm the dummy.

I'm going to point you to the R-Pod owner forum as I haven't done any of these. rpod-owners.com
Thanks John, These videos are very helpful! Question: Can you run the refrigerator on battery mode while traveling to keep it cool?
Right, no compressor in these absorption type refrigerators. All three ways of power do essentially the same thing.
The temp setpoint? Is the full bars colder?
Yes, more bars should mean a colder fridge.
@@JohnMarucci thank you!
Ok John (or anyone else) showing my lack of smarts now... on the temp settings does the bigger led temp lights mean colder or the opposite? Did not hear mention of which is colder when you described it.
The more LED lights showing should mean colder temps in the fridge. Thanks!
@@JohnMarucci my question too, thanks Leo for asking
Yeah, it’s not intuitive at all. Would have been nice if they had stencilled something on the fridge making it more obvious what the lights actually mean. Thanks for the question and the answer.
Do you have a video on slide maintenance?
Barbara, sorry I don’t yet have a video on slide maintenance. Thanks!
Hi John how do u change. The lightbulb in the microwave?
Susan, I haven't had to change mine. Thanks.
Thanks!
Thank you John !! Safe travels !!
Any suggestions when fridge won’t propane light- propane is open and full.
Check to ensure your stove is lighting, this will check off that propane is getting to the back of the cabin.
Hey there I have a r pod trailer and my fridge is not turning on it was fine a few days ago now it won’t go on any tips idk where to start?
I would first check any fuses and battery connection.
Hi, i would like to buy one but just have a simple solar system, my last fridge ran on gas alone. I know tgese need to be hooked up to electric to work, could i just use one marine battery charged with a 100 watt panel? Thank you...
There are ones that run on 12v. Have you done a search yet?
@JohnMarucci yes, I don't have enough solar power to run one, but i plan on investing. I think for now I can run a cable from the battery I have to just power the control panel. Seems a waste though.
John, I need to replace the drawer for this refrigerator. Have you ever run across them? I am not finding one.
Thanks for sharing
What is the coldest setting. The short or the tall one?
The coldest setting is when all lights are illuminated. Thanks!
John, off topic...but, do you know what year the Hood River edition came out?
I do not know. I would ask on the R-Pod Owners forum: www.rpod-owners.com
Ive been told that the refrigerator has been discontinued. What is a good replacement ?
I’d ask on the R-Pod owners forum: rpod-owners.com
Ok thank you
RPOD RP 182G with Dometic M8501 that just quit cooling on Propane but electric still works.
How does one change out the light inside the fridge? Mine is no longer working. Thank you!
Good question of which I haven't had to do before. I'll have to point you the owners forum: rpod-owners.com. Hopefully someone on the forum has done this. Thanks!
Can u recommend a solar set up?
Susan, I don't have solar and can't recommend a set up. You may want to inquire on the R-Pod owners forum: rpod-owner.com
Thanks again for all the great information!
earnestxxxx Glad to hear the videos are helpful. The link to my Amazon store is: amazon.com/shop/johnmarucci
I found it by Google. It sure wasn't easy to find through Amazon. Here's the link for anyone else who's interested! www.amazon.com/shop/johnmarucci
@@JohnMarucci LOL! Thanks, I didn't see your response before replying!
I take eight water bottles and put them in the freezer and rotate them into the refrigerator area and back into the freezer.
Great idea, thanks for sharing!
How do you replace the control panel
I have never replaced the control panel on this fridge. You‘ll want to search RUclips.
Thanks John. How do you power the freezer on travels days? Or does it just stay cold enough for a few hours?
Just recently did a three hour trip to a state park. Freezer was at -22 when we left and 15 degrees when we plugged back into to shore power at the campsite. I was very pleased with how it retained the temperature. I transported it full of frozen goods and in its box in the truck bed. Hope this helps!
John our R-Pod is a 2018
Carl, if I am not mistaken, I think some of the 2018's may have the Jensen like mine and later they changed them to the newer Furrion without the DVD player. If you have the Jensen with the DVD player, I have the same model and plan to do a video at some point here on using it. Thanks again!
John Marucci
We have the Furrion without the CD player, disappointed with that.
I just bought an rpod 179 2017 it has no freezer door...how do I get one?
My plug in light on the refrigerator sets off the gas reset button. Why?
I really am not sure why. You may want to ask on the R-Pod owners forum: rpod-owners.com
First! Thanks for the videos!!!
I don’t really like the idea of the propane frig, especially with an open flame in a park that hasn’t had rain for a long time
I’d wish all manufacturers would go to a compressor type refrigerators 12 volt/ 110 even because they use less energy and more efficient
The Dometic in the R-Pods are three way. Propane, a/c shore power, and battery only. Works well.
