So it’s been a full week after I’ve gotten protuned, I’ve done some wot to have fun and I have been completely fine. Teflon tape is holding up well. Sucks you nor I had the problems fixed by GS but I’m still running it with the teflon.
Not sure if my issue is related but my car was running fine for all of 3 days after the install. Built boost and held it fine but now I'm seeing some concerning knock numbers under partial throttle and the car definitely seems like it's spooling much slower. I took out the inlet and double checked everything and the car seemed to run okay for about 24hrs before feeling down on power again and accompanied by knock random knock events under light load. Car ran fine before the Grimmspeed bpv but I wanted the noise. going to install a chargepipe, grimmspeed inlet and the oem bpv next week to see if I can resolve the issue.
Check the hoses running upwards from the BPV and coupler. Follow them all the way up and make sure they’re plugged in. Those can get unplugged over time. Keep me posted!

Oh I know the pain of AF. Definitely happens more often than it should. Honestly, I’d still give the BPV a shot. I would suggest having a back up plan though in case it doesn’t work out. Seems like you got your issues fixed so I’m glad to hear that!

Hey bro thanks for the vid, I get mine today for my 18 STI and now I’m kind of terrified to install it after watching.. I know you said you’re closing the chapter on this but did you reach out to GS again?
Hey dude. I didn’t reach out anymore but I’d give it a shot if I was you! The BPVs are a lot easier to install/remove on the STIs compared to the WRX so you got nothing to lose!
Sound like your bypass valve is having an issue with pressure release and causing the turbo and car to stall out from built up pressure in the charge system. If the bypass valve is doing it’s job the valve would open to allow the excess pressure to pass by and recirculate. That last pull it did it sound like the valve opened. The spring is probably defective.
Nope, I’m pretty confident that the issue is with the neck portion of the BPV. Eventually I’ll wrap some Teflon around it and re-install but for now I just want to enjoy the car.
Hmm, mine was leaking where the neck portion was. The thing was after the car died I could never get it to idle afterwards. Af correction 1 was over +35 which killed the car instantly. I could just blow into the bypass valve and air would shoot out of the connection so it was pretty easy to tell what was wrong.
The Grimmspeed was on back order for such a long time and they finally shipped mine it in black to replace my black Boomba BPV because if the issues I’ve heard with them. Although my boomba has not given me any issues there is no stutututu. So hopefully the GS BPV that I get doesn’t have this issue.

I have a 19 wRX with the Cobb intake and GS bypass valve and I always get the Pssssssss noise. How are you getting the stttsstts noise just curios bc we have the same mods? Could it be the charge pipe and top mount making the noise?
It could be the cast aluminum turbo inlet I had. That, or you may have gotten the “V2” of the bypass valve which I think is an improvement over the original BPV.

now I am super nervous to install my GS bov... Also I HATE how clean your undercarriage is! out her in NH you'll have rust after one year. lol Have you tried raising your Idle a cpl hundred rpm maybe???
Is there any undercarriage protection of some sort that people over there can apply to prevent rust? Or is it inevitable?? And nah, I didn’t bother to change anything else for the BPV. I sold the car back in February for an S2000. Talk about dirty!
@ronfromportland lol. It's funny you say that. Cuz it's crossed my mind a few times... and yeah you can do like rustproofing. But I find it hilarious as cars today are supposed to come with corrosion prevention already. But living in New England you'll have rust agyer a year no matter what. Even with the sprays it still happens.
Bro just got mine today and installed it and no sound at full throttle it did build boost but no sound like bruuu I waited 3 months just for it not to work sorry I just need a place to rant
Are you shifting out of gear and into neutral...? If you do so, the engine rpm will drop... Please correct me if I'm wrong but that is what it looks like you are doing. Regardless the car should be able to idle while in neutral and rolling.
@@ronfromportland Indeed. I am just trying to get an understanding of when/why you are doing this. The only time I shift the car into neutral is when I am rolling the last 50-100 feet of a stop. Is that how you noticed the issue? I don't mean to down play your experience but I have driven manual for a long while and have never known anyone to put the car neutral in such a manner (aside from a double clutch type shift, but that is just for a moment).
@@ronfromportland Have you tried monitoring the AFRs on your Accessport when this occurs? Could be causing an extremely rich condition immediately after the boost that is fouling the plugs and making it harder to maintain idle after all that fuel has been dumped. Might wanna pull the plugs and check them. Could be IAC valve going bad too..or a combo. Im more familiar with the older EJ motors, but might be something to check. (Edit: I realize this is 5 months old..so it may be too little too late now, just trying to help! 😁)
Like yours, my GS BPV does not make a flutter noise when the vehicle recirculates after the throttle closes. The only flutter I hear is from my GS EBCS when my boost is north of certain PSI benchmarks. GS updated [the internals of?] their 2015-2021 FA20DIT BPV in recent years. Our lack of BPV flutter may be due to those hardware changes and/or you and I have a healthier tune than OP. Seeing as how he’s had problems with stalling out after WOT and, in a more recent video, he discovers that all of his turbo’s intake-side turbine blades have been damaged, I’m going to wager that you and I may more conservative tunes in our WRXs.
My wrx been doin this and it’s stock af. Keeps throwin a “too lean” code. Hella wack..I was about to put a BPV on but with this bs goin on I’m stayin stock. It’s hella boring. I’m bummed..I just want it to be fun. Lol It’s got a new MAF & new 02. I only have 16k miles on it. Bought my shit brand new, no tune, no mods other than suspension and cosmetics to keep warranty in tact. So I’m really at a loss as to why I’d be facing these issues. Other issues; lights keep coming on. It sometimes throws all my dash lights, other times it will have one or two lights come on. Then if I drive it the lights go away. I’m gettin pissed.
Try cleaning your MAP sensor. It’s located on top of the intake manifold. Just be careful to not strip the plastic manifold. Here’s a video I did on the MAF/MAP sensor cleaning. I hope it helps ruclips.net/video/pmS5WlX6MaU/видео.html
Communicate w/your dealer. Build rapport. Be honest (and patient) w/them. "too lean" can be any number of thins, not just a MAF. Have you had the intake system smoke tested to see if it leaks anywhere? What about the fuel side of the lean equation?
I finally got my Grimmspeed BPV. I installed it. Guess what. I died 3 times, maybe 50% throttle. Driving through my neighborhood. Any updates on yours? Maybe it's a Portland thing

Where you having any over boost issues from having that leak on the bypass valve?
Hard to tell because I’d always overboost with my map even before the BPV. It still did it though, even after install.
@@ronfromportland oh ok how much were you over boosting?
@@Dronecorpse_88 my map was for 21 psi but I’d hit 24. This is peak so it’s not terrible.
@@ronfromportland no way? I’m tuned to 20 and I’m boosting to 23-25. I’m Trying to diagnose what’s causing it. I do have Grimspeed bypass valve along with inlet pipe and EBCS so I’m trying to figure out what’s causing it.
Funny how GS don't comment on your video when their product is faulty.
now I am super nervous to install my GS bov... Also I HATE how clean your undercarriage is! out her in NH you'll have rust after one year. lol
Have you tried raising your Idle a cpl hundred rpm maybe???
Is there any undercarriage protection of some sort that people over there can apply to prevent rust? Or is it inevitable??
And nah, I didn’t bother to change anything else for the BPV. I sold the car back in February for an S2000. Talk about dirty!
@ronfromportland lol. It's funny you say that. Cuz it's crossed my mind a few times... and yeah you can do like rustproofing. But I find it hilarious as cars today are supposed to come with corrosion prevention already. But living in New England you'll have rust agyer a year no matter what. Even with the sprays it still happens.
@@mrbeans2425 yeah I agree. Blows my mind that the underside of modern day cars are exposed to the elements!
@ronfromportland yeah it sucks. Even our rain is salt water most the time.
I'm having the same issue with my car
😞
@@ronfromportland I used blue loctite on mine even before I installed it. Just out of precaution. Hope that helps!
@@HugoHardinge oh nice! You unscrewed the neck first?
@@ronfromportland yes I did
@@HugoHardinge will have to give this a shot at some point. Thank you man 🙏
Bro just got mine today and installed it and no sound at full throttle it did build boost but no sound like bruuu I waited 3 months just for it not to work sorry I just need a place to rant
No need to apologize my guy! It probably all just depends on your setup. What all do you have done to the car?
@@ronfromportland stock this was the first upgrade
@@joshuasilva8073 might need a little more airflow to get the desired sound. Intake and other parts should help.
You need to have an intake to hear the flutter noise.
Are you shifting out of gear and into neutral...?
If you do so, the engine rpm will drop...
Please correct me if I'm wrong but that is what it looks like you are doing. Regardless the car should be able to idle while in neutral and rolling.
Yup, I am. If the car shuts off because of that then something isn’t right with it.
@@CWHolleman I think I started doing it out of habit from the car shutting off 😂. I’d rather be in neutral than in gear if it stalls after a pull.
@@CWHolleman but yes, the RPMs do drop after immediately shifting to N. If the car stalls (which it did) then I don’t deem it safe to drive.
The Grimmspeed bpv I ordered does not flutter was that ever an issue to anyone else ?
Like yours, my GS BPV does not make a flutter noise when the vehicle recirculates after the throttle closes. The only flutter I hear is from my GS EBCS when my boost is north of certain PSI benchmarks. GS updated [the internals of?] their 2015-2021 FA20DIT BPV in recent years. Our lack of BPV flutter may be due to those hardware changes and/or you and I have a healthier tune than OP. Seeing as how he’s had problems with stalling out after WOT and, in a more recent video, he discovers that all of his turbo’s intake-side turbine blades have been damaged, I’m going to wager that you and I may more conservative tunes in our WRXs.
are you still running the ambot tune?
Here and there. I mainly run my protune from my local shop.
My wrx been doin this and it’s stock af. Keeps throwin a “too lean” code. Hella wack..I was about to put a BPV on but with this bs goin on I’m stayin stock. It’s hella boring. I’m bummed..I just want it to be fun. Lol
It’s got a new MAF & new 02.
@@ronfromportland it’s been cleaned and then replaced already..still on some funky shit. It’s weird. I think I got the short end of the stick 😂
@@nicolasmerritt3760 oh man…
@@nicolasmerritt3760 let me know if you try anything else to fix it!
Communicate w/your dealer. Build rapport. Be honest (and patient) w/them. "too lean" can be any number of thins, not just a MAF. Have you had the intake system smoke tested to see if it leaks anywhere? What about the fuel side of the lean equation?
mine does it too i have a 2011 wrx
It’s definitely leaking.
Crap man. I have been waiting on mine for months. I hope I don't have this problem.
Seems to be an isolated issue but be sure to let me know once you install it!
I finally got my Grimmspeed BPV. I installed it. Guess what. I died 3 times, maybe 50% throttle. Driving through my neighborhood. Any updates on yours? Maybe it's a Portland thing
@@thomasgalvin9385 I’ve been meaning to take it apart and put some plumber’s tape around the larger opening but I haven’t gotten the chance. I took it off and left it in storage.
I will probably just try to return it. Do you have any other BPV suggestions? Sorry about your Outback it's crazy how bad quality control has gotten.
@@thomasgalvin9385 my nameless performance BPV has been solid. I’ve heard lots of good things about the Cobb BPV but it’s not the cheapest. Honestly if your OEM BPV isn’t leaking, I’d use that!
And thanks man, I was pretty bummed about it but I’m glad it’s fixed.
Bad PR travels 10x faster (not scientifically proven) than good PR. Sour apple stories gain more attention and ppl hold on to it. Glad GrimmSpeed stood behind the product and tested; but unlucky the issue wasn't resolved. If the valve can be serviced, what about trying a different rate spring in the GS valve? Worst case, sell it for $20, take the loss and move on. Maybe it will work for the next guy.
Yup, pretty thankful they warrantied it to begin with so I didn’t bother pushing. Plus, it’s not hard to remove/install but I just got tired of doing it every week or it seemed. At this point, I’ll take a loss and move on since the car is running perfectly without it.
Anyone have good experience with the GS bpv? Waited two months for mine and currently waiting on a few other parts before I install.
Lots of folks have had no issues with their BPV. Mine seems to be an isolated issue at this point.
@@ronfromportland thanks for the reply man. Hopefully it all goes well! I’ll let ya know
@@andtvergara yessir, keep me posted!
Damn...guess I'll be canceling my order.
I could have just gotten one from a bad batch. I’ve seen only a few folks with the same issues.
if it ain't broke don't fix it
you should blip your throttle at 1k rpm and don't let it die so easily
