I know you've got your eye on that HKS SSQV BOV and just thinking about all those ladies that you'll impress as you drive down the road sounding like a full fledged race car. But let's step back and take a look at what the actual differences are between BOV's and Bypass valves. There is the legend, the myth and the horror that a BOV will damage your engine. But will it really?......

Good info but was hard to watch. Go pee bro
Appreciate the I put, I generally just move around a lot 😅
@@Smeedia moving around isn't a deal-breaker, but you did well at keeping "thinking" words to a minimum IE uh's and um's. I am new to modding these cars and appreciate the content. keep it up!
Appreciate the feedback! I just generally move a lot😅
i'm 10 months late to this comment, but it is pure gold.
@@Smeedia I'm like that but I have Asperger's and a touch of ADD.
Bpv’s keep boost bov has to remake boost. That’s what I learned
Good way to remember it, simple and to the point
@@Smeedia thank you for explaining this i drive a chevy cruze, love my turbo noise and watch this when I wanted to see what I can do for mine. Just upgrading my stock spring .
If you have a blow through MAF (sensor after turbo) and BOV after MAF you can have all the BOV goodness with no real drawbacks (other than turbo RPZm dropping more than it would with BPV)
Another great video! This really helped understand the difference.
Thank you! Trying to get the discussion/debate posts so they eliminate the need for people to have ti do a lot of research on topics before making a choice on what they want to do. 😁
Sir, thank you for the massive information dump you have released upon me lol. Just picked up my second wrx. 1st was a 2002 wrx and now we have a 2017 wrx. I have so many ideas for this car and your channel has opened my eyes to so many pros and cons of things I've had in mind. Seriously thank you for all the videos and for all of your time. To be honest I have a trucking channel and I'll be trucking and just let your channel play in the background. So much info bro. Thank you again. Stay safe sir. Oh and its completely stock with 43k miles on it.
I love my boomba bpv, get that nice flutter sound lol
Is it on the Wrx or Sti
@@CR-Z24 wrx only no sti versions
so he said at 3:25 u dont get the flutter but I've seen videos for the wrx with the boomba with it so is there some other mod or is the boomba
@@lifeisgood7807 you can go check out the Boomba BPV on their youtube channel they have a comment section all about it. You can still get the flutter even if the WRX is bone stock and you don't need any other mods and still recirculates the air 100%.
@@blackdiamondyt2838 thank you! ill check em out
I’ve literally just changed mine back from a dump valve to my stock recirc again.
The sound was fun and the throttle shut afterfire/bang were cool. But the lag in gear changes from losing all the boost is REALLLY noticeable. Did some pulls last night and jesus just keeps pulling rather than the car bouncing around the second clutch is dipped.
I hadn’t noticed how bad it was till i changed it.
Coming off throttle with the dump valve felt like hitting a wall almost like applying the brakes.
With the recirc it almost feels like it just keeps pulling just stops accelerating.
So you got a bypass valve? & if so witch one exactly if you dont mind me asking
I notice this with my recirc BOV. Once recirculate there was a noticeable difference with pulls when shifting. Most it’ll drop is like 2-3 psi in the upshifts. Super happy with the sounds and power right now
@@jonshuacaceres9828 I was thinking about buying a BOV for my Mustang ecoboost. Wanted that psshh sound but I heard you lose a lot of power with it. It doesnt really show a lot of stuff about it on the internet but when i kept watching videos about it, some people claim it really does make you lose some power so im thinking if its even worth getting anymore?
@@mjaliazasif you want the turbo sound, get a intake, downpipe, to a strait pipe, or a cat back.
I have a GFB Decepter Pro 2, with a module I can use to open and close the valve from in the cabin. Basically for the sound and the novelty. Once I got the cobb intake I barely open the BOV and keep it on recirc most of the time. The sound from the intake is better when its closed (the cobb one sounds like a flutter).
So basically, if you are after sound, you may as well just get the intake and avoid aftermarket bov, your wallet will thank me.
From my (albeit very limited) understanding (planning on a ‘21 STI build next year):
BOV = better sound, only goes well with Stage 2 and further upgrades
BPV = better reliability, actually built for the EJ motors, doesn’t require a tune at lower stages
Had a gti with a bov and it’s was fun and all but overtime it damaged my fuel injectors. Idled like shit too even with a tune. Got a subi now and I will NEVER get a bov again🤣🤣
That was a lot of information to be said but I did leave learning something(s).
Glad you were able to get something out of it! I also dig your video idea that you commented as well! I'll get it added to the que!
Can I loose power or have problems if I disconnect the return hose on the intake from my BOV? I have a KW turbocharger
Lmao I literally asked you about this like 5 days ago 😂
I had it qued up on my list but bumped it up because it became a hot topic 😅
I was torn between the two for awhile until i decided to go with a Dual Port BOV! what this means is it vents both to the atmosphere and back into the air intake - Increasing performance due to minimized leakage and rapid response. Best of both worlds! ;)
But won’t you still get better performance on the BPV
Which brand?

I didnt know you could be tuned off of MAF and have a front mount intercooler.
2019 wrx going from the stock bpv to a cobb LF bpv full recirculation does that require a tune?

did you have to pee really bad? too much coffee perhaps. so jittery and bouncy. Take a moment and relax. Like a self-made fidget cube/spinner. I'm here just trying to decide btwn Boomba, GFB, or Perrin BPV. Came from the VW world where it was Forge, APR, and one other company as the best way to go.
TBH this was when I started making videos and had no idea how to be myself in front if a camera lol
2015+ WRX I would go with boomba
2004+ WRX Cobb or Forge
2004+ STI either Cobb or forge
Great video! So just to recap, for my completely stock motor (2005 WRX), there's no benefit in switching out the stock BPV for something else. If I want some noise but don't want to mess up the running of the car, I could get a hybrid BOV, so that some of the air is recirculated and some vented. Assuming that's all correct then, three years after making this vid, do you have any other recommendations for a hybrid BPV/BOV??
You're fidgeting like you have to pee lol.
Lol I may have had to 🤣
Thanks for the video, just got a 17 sti, previous owner had a HKS BOV with the stock maf, and ive noticed my AFR dipped to 11 when i shift normal no boost or nothin, or if i put it into neutral it dips to 11 then to 20, also on pulls shifting it not smooth at all. And sometimes the car dies and rpm drop down to 500. So just ordered a Boomba BPV so should fix my problems.
Hmmm.. bro the mighty car mods video leaves no doubt that these are better for the car.. and all of these other videos on how the BOV keeps boost not leaking it, better throttle response ect. and the GFB BOV does everything a BVP does.. hmm so confusing
All the GFB units ive had leak relatively quickly. Theyre good units but the seals don't last long with them.
Need to turn the background noise down.
i have a hks super sqv4 bov for my 2017 wrx i got it pro-tuned but recently it turned on the check engine after maybe 3-5 days after the pro tune , any thought of what it could be
Thank you for this informative info! Definitely going for BPV for my XT Forester
How'd it turn out?
I like my Perrin recirc. Helps hold moderate pressure in charge pipes between shifts unlike the oem bpv the dumbs everything and you have to build it back up.
i'm using a gfb response bov on my wrx .Set to 90/10 recirculate and it runs fine
I had the same one on my 07 STI, when I went to get pro tuned I did a smoke test to verify everything before going on the dyno and mine was leaking causing the turbo to work a little harder to compensate for lost boost. No immediate danger but long term could cause damage, if it's working for ya than that's all that matters! I would just ensure that if there is a leak you can correct it, I lived the GFB when I had it. It was a happy medium for noise.
Makes so much since years ago had a Mazda speed 3 gen1 which i replaced the BPV to a BOV. Literally had every issue you stated. Not worth the trademark whoosh. Went back with a Cobb BPV and went through new spark plugs prior of going back to BPV. No bueno. Great video bro!
So…say if I have a 18’ STI with just a cat back and a K&N air filter. Can I just get a tune made for the BOV?
You can but I wouldent say it's worth it
@@Smeedia I did purchase the Boomba BPV. I’ve heard it’s a better option if I don’t want to run the BOV tune cost.
Bro. Bro. The douchy androgynous hipster shirt HAS to go. Just sayin'.
This video is supppper old when I was still getting use to being in front of a camera lol 😅
Off throttle compressor surge does not slow the turbo and yes people have tested it, the "stall" is the air flow separating from the blades, it's actually better for response then running a valve because boost pressure is not released and doesn't need to be built up again, this is why it's common place in motorsport not to run a valve.
By the time you were finished saying bypass valve the video was liked hahaha this was a very informative video ! Thank you sir!
Appreciate the support! 😁😁😁
Damn that WRX is clean.
Such a good video. I kept fucking laughing though because some of the time you were filming it looked like you were holding in a poop. haha. Glad I found your channel dude.
I mean ya never know 👀 could have been prairie digging 🤣 appreciate the support my dude l, glad the content was up to par! 😁
Is it good for Sti stock engine 2020 if I get BOV hybrid and set 60/40. And Need tune? Any problems on engine? Thank you
Does that Turbosmart TS-0203-1215 fit 2015+ WRX (Non STI)? Website is not clear and I know the BPV moved to under instead of on top by TMIC
This gave me ptsd from last night...got a flex tube to run from recirc bov to inlet and it came too long so I made a middle connection after cutting and it was too tight and rubbed on my coolant line...sliced it...so had to pinch and cut the hose, reattach and then had me thinking to just plug the inlet lol will say, perrins bov is so huge if you're running fmic and have Aos lines running through the middle, it doesn't leave much room.....add this to trying to figure at baro p2227 code after dropping a new iag block in, starting the car sitting at 3psi idle and sweating bullets trying to find a leak in idle when I'm supposed to be breaking the motor in. Taking it too a shop down the street to find the leak though.....have literally reattached everything 3 times over and it is still there. New map sensor on the way just in case it is crapped out too...starting to regret upgrading all the stuff I did while waiting on the block that I did...blouch 2.5 pickle, grimm downpipe, perring equal length, walbro 450 but running stock fpr, gymkhana exhaust just because why not, perrin cai, cobb 1050x injectors...so pretty much too many factors
Thumbs up ...very informative.

Hey Tanner, do you now anything about the stock BPV on the FA20 motors having a squeak on deceleration from 2k to 1k rpm? I started hearing it after installing the Cobb intake.
My 2006 Forester XT has the stock BPV but it produces a loud enough 'Psh sh sh sh sh sh' to make people out walking turn around, I think parts of the intake have been removed by a previous owner and it has a cold air filter inside the front of the wheel arch.
That will definitely do it 🔥🙌
Yes :D
ive got the HKS on my 10th gen Si, after hearing about what BOVs can do over time now has me worried, when you say a " MAF or MAP car " what does that mean ? im afraid im gonna have to take my BOV off now due to what youre saying could happen as i do have quite a few mods, such as a mishimoto intercooler and intake and the phearable stage 1.5 tune.
Edit: im seeing something called a recirculation kit for the SSQV and wondering if that will help ? i do have the full assembly SSQV in which it is right next to my intake and doesnt replace the oem bpv
You should have a lot more subscribers man. Your content is super informative 👌
I appreciate that! Only bern making videos for a few months now but really enjoying it. I'm always open to any topics or discussions people have so if you ever have any feel free to shoot them my way!
i did the ricer thing and cut out a closed seal to block the air from going into a bpv and surges the air into the turbo. now i didn't do this right away did some research and said what the heck i get cool turbo flutter on my 2011 wrx sedan and backfire when clutch is pressed after i reach boost
Shouldent be too harmful on the turbo, your not running big boost. Hows the car run? Are you tuned or still on a OEM or OTS tune?
@@Smeedia its on a stage 1 only engine mod is cobb intake , been running with the mod for a few months now , no issues turbo spools fine and the flutter causes the engine to backfire 1 to 3 pops in low boost when i ran a actual bov the engine stalled and was backfireing like a old classic car would, she was not happy so i put the stock bpv and then closed it with a allumium gasket cut to shape

No, the car runs super rich because it thinks it's got more air than it does. That's why you dont use BOV on MAF cars.
I have black above my tailpipes. Is that a sign of running rich. On and off i get a quick break up low rpm inbetween shifts,
I plan to get a perrin blowoff valve on a, basicallly stock jdm ej205 (All it has is an intake, exhaust, and aos) If I were to get it tuned would that get rid of potential issues(I have to get the car tuned regardless cause of the ecu im running) and if not is there any supporting mods that are a must install to run on a daily street car (i want cause of the noise, yes im aware i sound like a child)
On a dyno. No difference at all in any performance test. Its personal preference and forge motorsport agree
I have a 2015 c300 with a k&n air filter ,down pipe and stages 2 street tune and i cant figure out what one i want to.go with
Thankyou!
Hey man is that a voltex spoiler what did ya pay for it im gonna get one here soon

I thought that good aftermarket BPVs help smooth out power delivery and even increase power down low, the stock one mainly focusing on the middle of the rpm range. Am I wrong?
i got a question, is the boomba bypass valve a good option?? looking into getting one for my 21 Sti
To much movement can’t focus on what u saying. You like dancing to the music.
Hi,I'm new on the Subaru scene I have a 03 wrx bone stock and I'd like to hear the famous psssshhh what will u recommend BOV or keep it stok ? And it's my daily
I would suggest a hybrid BOV if you want to hear the noise and maintain boost pressure. You can get away with running one at 50/50. Congrats on the new WRX! Bug eyes are one of my favorite generations!
Thank you man it's really fun to drive this cars I used to drive a Hondas but now I won't go back to 😆,about the BOV any good brand? And do I have to dyno it after after install the BOV ??
@@luisdeloera5842 if you get a hybrid BOV that is 50/50 you can get away with not tuning it. However I always suggest protune whenever it comes to modifications. If you went full atmospheric I would suggest going speed density and a tune. But for a hybrid BOV like the Go Fast bits I linked in the description you should be fine to just run it 😁
Ok got it and Thanks a lot for the info u r awesome and I'll be in touch if I need more details about the subarus have a happy New Year ✌

bypass are the best
Silly Question, but is there a reason why you show you run the COBB BPV, but don't have it under your 'recommended' BPV's here?
Personally, I use COBB parts when I can (AoS/EBC/Airbox/etc), so am hoping that there isn't an issue with using that.
No issues with it at all! If I did not link it then I missed it but its my number 1 recommendation 🔥😁
@@Smeedia Ok, that's what I thought, was just surprised I didn't see it under the BPV listing. :)

Of you get hybrid just set it to 60/40 and you should be fine 🙏
Smeedia I appreciate you
@jason87023 did you get the hybrid bov? If so did anything negative happen to the stock motor?

This was a good one and it just happens to be what I'm debating for my 03 wrx when I bought the car it came with a HKS Super SQV4 BOV it sounds cool and all but something feels off. I have a GFB TMS Respons Hybrid BOV that I've been thinking of swapping in and seeing if that fixes the issue. who knows though I might just sell both of them and get a Nameless BPV

Part of me wanted you to fumble that BPV right onto your hood as flipping it around
🤣🤣🤣🤣
So question what about the boomba bpv is it good? Because I heard it makes a flutter sound ?

BPV are good for maf cars, blow off valves are good for MAP cars
I'm making the step to finally mod my 2014 STI Hatch. I have a buddy that works on Subaru's for a living but I'm the kind of person that has to know what is happening and not just rely on someone to tamper with my dream car. I've learned so much from your channel. I'm new to the channel but If you haven't already made a video on this topic it would be nice to cover the countless acronyms that come with the modification world. Being new to this I have had to stop your videos many times to look up acronyms and there meaning. Great work on the channel. Thanks dude!
Not a bad idea, I'll definitely make that video to break down what the acronyms are, at least the commonly used ones 😁
I went to go test drive a 2017 WRX and it had the cool whoosh sound but I didn’t really get see if it had a BOV. Is there a way I can get the sound without compromising the reliability of the FA motor.
If you wanna retain the BOV I would just get a proper turn for it and it will minimize the issued 🙏
For the gfb did you leave the gasket on? I've seen alot of people stating your supposed to take the gasket off bc it'll cause a leak

Could you keep the engine from running rich by adding dual exhaust and cold air intake??
I have 2017 wrx Subaru idk about the subie btw but I was thinking to buy bpv do I have to get access port?
Not needed for a BPV 🙏
What if my car has no MAF or MAP censor (genesis coupe) will blow off valve still be in disadvantage?
It should have both, is the car on speed density then? Pulled up a couple pictures and I see a MAF sensor on the intake
i just had my 2017 STi pro tuned. now i'm thinking about getting a to atmosphere BOV. Will i need another tune?
Yes you will 🤙
@@Smeedia What about if i go hybrid BOV?
What does the diverter valve do
Essentially the same as a BPV just divertes the air from the charge pipe into the intake track when the throttle body closes
Thinking about putting an Atmospheric BOV on a stage 1 protune. Car is completely stock except axlebacks and high flow air filter. Would the car read that there isn't air recirculating and keep the air fuel ratio the same; therefore, not having an issue with it running rich?
Alright sorry if this gets long , I currently have the HKS SSQ BOV for my 2017 STi.
I plan on installing with the full recirculation kit, but would it be ok to go full vent / mix
Once I get a protune? Would a tune fix out all the disadvantages? I still want that whoosh sound overall
My setup with the protune is going to look like:
COBB SF Intake + AP
HKS BOV SSQ
Invidia catless downpipe
Tomei expreme catback
IAG Air Oil Separator ( street series)
A tune would fix the vast majority of the issues, the WCU just needs to know where the air is going since its not going back into the system
ooo that TMG banner
My English isn’t that good. So the red one bypass is fine for my 2015 wrx?
Yes 🙏
A fellow Washingtonian Subaru owner, nice. Not sure why I'm that surprised though. lol.

Bryce Gutierrez you on a tune?
Vasilios Nikolopoulos no tune.
@@vasiliosnikolopoulos6384 yeah boomba's bpv/bov doesn't need a special tune. It functions the same as the stock ones according to them

Keep it like 80/20 and you should be okay
I swear I read this word for word on nasioc
Close, I referenced their forum and a few others on IgotanSTI, my own experience and a few people I know to keep information uniform rather than just using random terminology.
@@Smeedia just to correctly inform you and you veiwers.. theres no way that 18psi of boost coming back and hitting your compressor wheel is EVER going to stall it out..
@@cameron1423 Im not saying that 18 PSI will stall out your turbo and that's also not what I said. I stated that when the air cuts back into the turbo it is referred to as compressors surge (Or Flutter as some people call it). On higher applications where you are running significantly more boost (I.E on a Borg Warner, Larger Precision Turbos) than you can run the risk of slowing down the compressor wheel. on a stock IHI VF39 18 Lbs. won't do anything significant to the OE Turbo. But no one is going to not run a blow off valve or not run a bypass valve on a stock intercooler stock turbo car.
