I remove and replace the starter without removing the intake manifold. All you need to do is remove the console that bolts the intake manifold outer side to the engine, 2 bolts in the bottom, and 2 bolts under the manifold. Then you unbolt it, remove the solenoid and the alternator wiring. The starter motor can then be taken out by pulling it backwards and lifting it at the end. It comes out of there without too much resistence. I replaced one yesterday, and to get the bolt inside in it is not a problem, only tricky part is to get the nut on it with one hand only, so you locate the bolt, push it back, get the nut over the hole, use your small finger to push the bolt towards the nut, and with you index and thumb you turn the nut until the thread takes. Never had any problem with that. One time i had to take the starter out because the nut felt behind it. But doing this gets a routine work. You can save lot of work, time, and money that way.

Fuckkk BMWs ! So hard to reach the ET12 , my wrench to wide hitting the transmission. This is not a beginner maintenance. You must be very professional and have all the necessary tools for this type of job

Thank you for this great video. What tool did you use to get the E12 bolts out? I can’t get my socket on the E 12 bolts in the back. The head of my ratchet is too wide, and the head of those E12 bolts are too close to the transmission case, not leaving enough room for the head of the ratchet. I did try using a universal joint, but there wasn’t really enough room.

A 3/8th box wrench works great. Gotta double wrench though because 3/8 is a small wrench

Skipped the most challenging part - how to actually access and unscrew those E12 bolts! If you don't have very specific tools, you probably will not be able to reach them from the front and need to lift the car!

Hi. Thanks for the video. I have the same car, same color, same interior, but 99. And I think I have a starter issue, which is why I'm here. How long did this all take? Why didnt you pull it from underneath? Thanks
