You're doing great, brother. Super proud of all the things you've done here and all the work you're putting into getting better. It's absolutely inspiring. I think you're touching on a VERY real thing here that I'm feeling in my own stuff, too. I think you're right and I'm really looking forward to seeing how you grow from here. You're going to crush it!
I agree with you completely. When I come on RUclips 75% of the videos that are suggested are videos I have already seen. Your experiences demonstrate how AI is controlling our lives rather than assisting us. I've watched many of your videos including the 6th on the 5th (didn't care about the visuals, the content was great) Thanks for all you do and good luck with the future of the site.
Hi Josh! Well, this video popped up in my stream :-)- I made the same decision you have made now - after CJS I tried really hard to apply best practices, but it didn't work. Here and there a video that spiked but with no possibility to maintain that momentum. The click came with an email from Filmbooth, in which was explained how youtube now apparently wants longer content. So I decided to a) make good prep/bullet points, b) prep everything on screen, c) use obs to capture everything (so no pattern interrupts, long hours of editing etc), d) stopped worrying about length and d) speak about the very niche subject of the metronome. Videos became 30 to 50 min. long, but avd followed till +10 minutes, even in a language which is not my own. I accepted I will never have a +1M sub channel but for that, as you said, we would have to pick another subject. And that's not what we want. But from what I can tell of my own experience, the approach you describe is gonna work. I know it's easy so say "keep it up", but I would prefer: find a format in which you feel that you (= you!) are 100% you and with the ease of speaking you have including the art of storytelling, it must work on a level that makes you feel it's worth your time. Many greetings from Belgium!
Josh, as you know, I’m more blues than jazz, but I do dig jazz to some extent. Eventually, I’ll learn to play some. I love your channel and aspire to create a similar level of “professional quality” content on my channel. Keep up the great work. Your insights and videos are top shelf!
Are you about growing the community or strengthening the tribe. Gratitude for your authenticity. Even if in a totally different industry I find your work both inspirational and aspirational. Keep going , Bro
I’m excited for you bro. We’re in the age of authenticity, so it’s only appropriate that you move in that direction. It’s liberating! I look forward to seeing what comes out of that from you. God bless!
I've been playing for a long time and am very familiar with the Barry Harris method. I was fortunate enough to attend his masterclass at the New School in the '90s. I’ve been following almost all of your videos because I see your passion for discovering new ideas within the BH method. It’s truly inexhaustible-just when you think you understand, new connections emerge. I appreciate how you explain things and love the discoveries you share. Keep up the great work! Thank you-it's comforting to know there are others like you out there!❤
Hey Josh congrats🎉🎉🎉 on opening up on the things that matter to you. I had always thought you were being genuine with the content. Keep up the amazing work kind regards Worrell Robinson.
Looking forward to see how you navigate creating and sharing content moving forward. I think creatives always end up unsatisfied and unfulfilled when they create anything that they think the algorithm/audience will like, DESPITE not being excited/inspired by it yourself. Sticking around to see what’s next!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank so much, Josh for your transparency and truth telling about how you see what you are offering. Also, I'm glad you are speaking to the issue of the deep cultural roots, and how this music came out of a dark soulless era in the experience of this country, and yet has brought much light to the world. Absolutely, all praises to the major figures, Oscar, Bill, Barry, Miles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and many others. Young players(not necessarily by age) stand on the immense contributions of these giants. So, yes, keep playing and educating people. To this end, I would like to request the inclusion of some women jazz giants(Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, Ann Ronnell, Dorothy Donegan, Lil Hardin Armstong, Billy Holiday, Hazel Scott, Diana Krull, these are just a few of many women who need to be recognized. You are doing a fabulous job...keep on going. Stay true to your mission, it's a really powerful one.
Josh... having played the piano for over 40 of my nearly 50 years, I am finally learning something that I want to play. It's a hard slog, but videos like yours that take concepts and explain and illustrate them have made a huge difference to me. The difference between continuing and packing it all in. I've appreciated your BH videos and I'd love more OP... just the thought of being able to understand something he's playing blows my mind!! All your efforts are very much appreciated. I look forward to more. Thank you. 👍🏼
Great content. I discovered your channel when I learnt about Barry Harris' approach a few months ago (which I immediately loved) and your videos popped up. Maybe an overall analysis type of content would be interesting for youtube. Thank you!
Great video Josh. Why? Because it comes from your soul. And by the way what is popular, what is trending, what the algo wants is not often where the best value resides.Charles MacKay in his book "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds "explained it well.Ah it was published in 1841...
I don't know if I buy the point about "nobody under xx knows Oscar Peterson", especially when you state in the same video that a lot of your views come from stories about Barry Harris (if anything even less people have heard of him), but I 100% agree with your decision to not chase trends/algorithm cues!
@JoshWalshMusic (from subscriber and one who interacts) I not only enjoy your insights and channel, I lived next to Times Square for decades and although I earned my PhD in jazz composition at NYU and was fully aware of Barry Harris and his workshops (my friends would go regularly), I never made it… not once… a regret of mine… also, I’m an Oscar Peterson fan… and I too work with Grammy winners et al.,… I would appreciate your insights into “more contemporary” artists and Venn diagram/degrees adjacent to your usual content (which I sincerely appreciate). Also, if and as far as you’re comfortable, I would appreciate more personal content/personal experiences/etc. I realize that this is your choice. Also, I realize that this would come with pros and cons. I wish you health and joy my talented friend… and many more rapturous musical moments. hug 🫂 from the road, Dr D

No worries… as for as I’m concerned, it’ll always be content over production. Please, keep up the good work!
Thanks Martin.
