One Wes is not American so he’s not even doing state schooling as you call it..secondly I would suggest you obtain a degree in Christian studies or some sort before knocking it..again a theological degree is vastly different. @ There is debate about the article in the Greek. However, theologically it doesn’t matter because there are numerous other passages and statements from Jesus himself in which he claims to be God. Personally, I am of the mind that “The Word was God” is a very accurate rendering of the Greek. One can look at this as the Logos being God as an aspect of his very nature or one can read it plainly as, the Logos is God. It matters not because to be God by one’s very nature (especially when your nature is Logos, that which gives meaning) is to be God. I would cite Hebrews 1:1-4 as well as the various “I am” statements by Jesus and the instances in which Jesus accepted worship and forgave sins. To say nothing of the Daniel’s passages applied to Jesus or the writings in the Epistles.

Either John is telling us that The Word is the same God that he is with, or he is telling us what logos is, as in his qualities. If we were to read it plainly then we should be reading it as “The Word was god” from the Greek. not only because it’s an anrthrous predicate nominative noun, but John himself differentiates 2 beings are being spoken of, Ton Theon, in accusative form and Theos in the nominative form. the fact John left the article out, is telling us that he is describing what the Logos is. it’s not an identifying Theos.

@ There is debate about the article in the Greek. However, theologically it doesn’t matter because there are numerous other passages and statements from Jesus himself in which he claims to be God.
Personally, I am of the mind that “The Word was God” is a very accurate rendering of the Greek. One can look at this as the Logos being God as an aspect of his very nature or one can read it plainly as, the Logos is God. It matters not because to be God by one’s very nature (especially when your nature is Logos, that which gives meaning) is to be God.
I would cite Hebrews 1:1-4 as well as the various “I am” statements by Jesus and the instances in which Jesus accepted worship and forgave sins. To say nothing of the Daniel’s passages applied to Jesus or the writings in the Epistles.
@@DrVarner I don’t think that there should be much debate about the Grammar of John 1:1c. It’s either definite or indefinite in English. Either John is telling us that The Word is the same God that he is with, or he is telling us what logos is, as in his qualities.
If we were to read it plainly then we should be reading it as “The Word was god” from the Greek. not only because it’s an anrthrous predicate nominative noun, but John himself differentiates 2 beings are being spoken of, Ton Theon, in accusative form and Theos in the nominative form. the fact John left the article out, is telling us that he is describing what the Logos is. it’s not an identifying Theos.

Remember the Jews asked Jesus about his age, If Jesus said “I AM” then he would’ve done a 180 and completely changed the subject to answer their claim. “I am he” would be a more accurate answer to the Jews claim.
