  • The Olympics are known as an international gathering of the world’s greatest athletes, a competition meant to showcase the greatest physical feats the world has to offer. But, largely forgotten today, for decades the Olympics were not just a physical competition, but an artistic one.

When the Olympics were held in Canada, I think in 1976, one of the Canadian artists was a potter named Mary Borgstrom. Four years ago, Alexander Archibald (Alex Archibald) bought her hoarded house, fixed it up. He found, at that time, many of the pots she still had. Pots that should've been in museums. He documented the event on his channel Curiosity Inc.

I was on the 1988 Olympic Snow Sculpture team from the United State in Calgary, Alberta after winning the national championship in Milwaukee that year. We placed in the top ten. Finland won gold, with Austria taking silver and Finland taking bronze. I believe that was the first time it was an Olympic event and that it was held either once or twice more.

In a way, the architecture for the athletic venues is an artistic competition. Some of the buildings have been wonderful, and have gone on to have long and useful lives. For example, the Waldbuhn and the Olympiastadion in Berlin have been updated, but were built by the Third Reich for the Berlin Olympiad

Trivia time: Monaco, the country that has participated in the most games without an athletic medal has an artistic medal.
Lauro De Bosis, the only medalist for dramatic works, won for his play ‘Icarus.’ Ironically he and his plane disappeared over the Tyrrhenian Sea in 1931 after he dropped anti-fascist literature over Rome.
Éva Földes, a winner in 1948 survived incarceration in Nazi concentration camps.

I remember the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. There were several notable sculptures I found very interesting. One was a group of black metal poles maybe 20 feet tall. It was downtown. They were straight with a gold band at 6ft. Another was at the campus of the University of Calgary. It featured statues of 6 life sized athletes, three on each side, bending a flat piece of metal into an arch one could walk under. I heard the IOC liked that one so much, they had a replica sent to their headquarters in Switzerland.

I had a friend who exhibited at the 1936 Olympics. He was a hockey fan and his painting was of a goal being scored in an NHL game. The players were recognisable both by number and out-of-perspective faces, He depicted the only Jewish player in the NHL at the time scoring the goal. The Nazis never did cotton on to his slur on their racial theories. He died about 30 years ago. He still had the painting which was sold at auction after his passing.

The science fiction novel "Achilles' Choice" is centered on a version of the Olympics which involves artistic events. It also has athletes participate in multiple events, which the specialization required for elite performance makes extremely difficult in reality. (The novel allows this by having an augmentation process called "The Boost" available to all participants, although it only allows them two chances at victory and the further augmentation that will prevent the invariably fatal side outcome known as "The Burn," which causes rapid degeneration eight years after taking "The Boost.")

Art Composition: replacing a sports competition that is based on measurable results - speed, height, time, distance, etc, with a category that is purely subjective . There are numerous examples of “art” that is highly subjective (banana on canvas, sculpture of hugging if memory serves which looked like something entirely different).

When and how did the winter Olympics begin?

    • @kutter_ttl6786
      @kutter_ttl6786 11 месяцев назад

Jan 25, 1924 - Feb 5, 1924, in Chamonix, France. As to the how, in 1921 at the IOC convention there was a call for equality in winter sports so it was decided to hold an "International Winter Sports Week". It proved to be successful so they decided to continue the event as the winter olympics.

    Pierre de Coubertin - koo-ber-tan, not kor-ber-tan
    ruclips.net/video/vyBA-cHFpyg/видео.html
Also, Pierre has some baggage too.
On women athletes, he said "an Olympiad with females would be impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic and improper."
He believed that only amateur athletes should be allowed, excluding anybody who received payment for their sport. By extension, he was also not in favor of working class laborers competing, as they were paid to perform these skills, rather than men who did sports as a hobby.
His understanding of the original ancient games has been called into question too.
The fact that the Games have continued to evolve over the years, as well as the criticisms written about him, show that he had his flaws.
