I've umpires for HS baseball(yes, I'm aware it's not the same). But it's not as easy as people think it is. I thought it would be easy. It's not. I think it would be easier if you were standing behind the pitcher. With technology today, I don't think they need an ump to call pitches.
That pitch was phat I can't believe these divas I had an ump call head high outside strike, T.W.I.C.E The catcher had to stand up And even my coach didn't say anything The parents were silent To this day...
Perception can change a lot. All the comparison clips were of right handed batters - the ball looking to be on the outside part of the plate. This guys is left handed - the ball looks to be closer bc it’s on the inside part of the plate now. Still Inconsistent, but interesting to see how perspective plays a part.
I'm sorry, I'm an idiot but I don't understand a catcher framing a pitch. The ball is delivered off the plate (ball) but because the catcher "framed it" in the zone, it's a strike? I understand a ball off the plate that is swung at and missed is a strike but a batter looking and "framed" is a strike? Seems like horseshit to me lol
Uhh…. The one called a strike lit up and could have been reasonably been called a strike. The others did NOT light up and were at least 3+ inches off the plate. The catcher was just a sore strikeout victim.
Some of these players have to see the replays of pitches they thought were so bad and realize they messed up, but i doubt they ever say anything about it!!🤷♂️🤷♂️
I dont think any are really strikes, but those 3 you showed are all well outside, easy balls, and he's complaining about one that's running inside just off the plate. It's not exactly the same pitch. I dont think it's fair to call that horse s**t
Lol this comment section is so funny. Everybody beefing that the mariners lead the division. Grow up its a game played by boys that are barely more than kids themselves.
Bad call, but when it's that close you don't take unless you've been fooled or you don't know the strikezone as well you think you do. Umpires aren't robots. A close call can be called either way.
Listen you can’t expect the ump to make every right call. That’s the entire point of having an ump. So that there are close calls and as long as they go both ways it’s fine. The other strikes they showed were similar but it’s not like he was totally biased towards the other team from what I can see. I’m with the ump.
Well, that patch was a couple inches closer than the ones He wanted from behind the plate So…. Good job making the ump doubt what he’s seeing when he was actually right
The major difference I see between the strike and the balls is lefty batter (with ump set up on the first base side of the plate) vs. righty batters (with ump set up on third base side.) Even identical pitches will look different to him in that case.
First off every putch he framed was outside, the pitch hes complainging about was inside and it was barely inside. I get it some umps do suck but that was a close pitch and no where near the other pitches hes complaining about
To be fair he wanted the same pitch but they where all against righties and that pitch looks farther off the plate and more like a ball against them that same pitch in the same zone against a lefty hitter looks like a strike because it’s more in a lefty’s strike/swing zone. Ump really didn’t do no wrong😂
Honestly framing pitches should be actually illegal instead of just on paper. If the catcher moves the ball after catching it then it should be an auto ball.
The umpires inside zone is different than his outside zone. Showing how he called outside pitches doesn’t really represent what his zone looked like that night…
Another reason human error and subjectivity should be limited, or eliminated, in an age when we have the technology to get the calls right without using an umpire for home plate.
I love that he's pissed that he couldn't convince a professional umpire what I could get a blind person to see is nowhere close but when it's finally anywhere nearby he's calling it. No shit he wasn't calling it a strike it was nowhere near a strike
The catcher is exaggerating his framing a little too much. Pulling his mitt that far out and then back in is a little much. All he had to do was change the angle in which he caught the ball and the ump might've given it to him more but the catcher pulling balls outside the plate almost into the edge of the batter's box back over the plate is an amateur move by a professional catcher. Smh
it goes to show that keeping your cool is the most important thing ever. Imagine if he got ejected instead or the manager. that means probably no grand slam. umpire was hilarious 😂
I would point out, those others were all against right handed batters where as he has batting lefty. An ump sets up differently and has a different angle. To me, as long as an ump is calling lefties consistent with other lefties, and righties consistent with righties, he's doing fine.
To be fair all those were outside and the oitch he was complaining about was inside. Umps try to call the same from whats inside to outside on a batter so what's a strike on the outside corner of a righty may not be a strike on the inside corner of a lefty and vica versa. Im and umpire and i know ill give a little bit off the plate the younger the kids are but im strict on the inside part of the plate mainly bc i believe you cant give some off both sides of the plate. Jomboy should know this i cant believe he put up a video making himself look so dumb. The catcher definitely was talking about him not calling inside pitches not the fact that its on the same side of the plate as an outside pitch to a righty
I appreciate the umpire admitting that he's having an off night and trying his best but we still need the automated ball and strike system. Please nobody respond with this is part of the game nonsense.
Don’t let this make you forget how overrated Julio Rodriguez is, nobody that is held to the standard people treated the way he’s treated are held to should get away with being that bad in the clutch lmfao
All of the balls ump was lined up closer to the right side of the plate (pitcher's view) and the one where he rung him up he was positioned right on the left horizontal line of the strike zone. Can see why the zone shifted.

Ump handled this like a pro. "Sometimes I’m just horseshit." Dude took accountability, owned up, but was very real about the fact that he’s just a human being doing his best. And I cant fault the man for admitting he messed up and saying he’s still trying his best.
Big respect, Blue.
Ohhhhh Jomboy.....you're the only thing in sports that slightly keeps me believing(hoping) that everything isn't fixed
I was up at 0330 this morning. That comment came out of left field. Be nice to know why that ref said that. Did he go drop a deuce in the thunderbox, or maybe unload some trouser gravy in the water closet?? Gotta give us more about that “up at 3:30 this morning” comment.
I've umpires for HS baseball(yes, I'm aware it's not the same). But it's not as easy as people think it is. I thought it would be easy. It's not. I think it would be easier if you were standing behind the pitcher. With technology today, I don't think they need an ump to call pitches.
That pitch was phat
I can't believe these divas
I had an ump call head high outside strike, T.W.I.C.E
The catcher had to stand up
And even my coach didn't say anything
The parents were silent
To this day...
I’m here for the mariners content!!!!
Now that the Cubs and Red Sox have broken their curses, the Mariners are now MLB's cursed team.
Change my mind.
Perception can change a lot. All the comparison clips were of right handed batters - the ball looking to be on the outside part of the plate. This guys is left handed - the ball looks to be closer bc it’s on the inside part of the plate now. Still
Inconsistent, but interesting to see how perspective plays a part.
From almost getting ejected to the walk-off grand salami. Gotta love Cal. (And the rally shoes... love it!)
The complaining Catcher sucked ballz at his framing job, way too much with the arm movement
I'm uneducated and my opinion is meaningless, but I'm really impressed by this catcher's framing.
Uhh…. The one called a strike lit up and could have been reasonably been called a strike. The others did NOT light up and were at least 3+ inches off the plate. The catcher was just a sore strikeout victim.
To the umpires defense, the called strike was VERY close, the others were almost an Angel Hernandezed.
I'm with the ump. 1st call was a reasonable strike call. Other examples, not quote.
Game of inches.
Well, that patch was a couple inches closer than the ones He wanted from behind the plate
So….
Good job making the ump doubt what he’s seeing when he was actually right
Inside versus outside and drifting away. Also like a ball width closer too. Chill bros. 😂
The major difference I see between the strike and the balls is lefty batter (with ump set up on the first base side of the plate) vs. righty batters (with ump set up on third base side.) Even identical pitches will look different to him in that case.
Jomboy single-handedly saving baseball one day at a time. Wouldn’t give a rats ass about the game anymore if it wasn’t for these breakdowns.
I’m mean the Seattle pitches were at best horseshit regardless of the frame job. Is this the equivalent of flopping in basketball
Managerial sacrifice. Stand down Son! Let me get thrown out, I can't hit a grand slam for us in the ninth, but you can!
I bet that dude with the shoe on his head was PRAYING for a “bad call” so he could get a chance to show off his Ken Griffey Nikes
Some pitchers & catchers were just plain use to Angel and his 8" off the plate zone😢😢
Scott Servais was a catcher, and knows the game. He caught some of the best. Also has dome a heck of a job with the Mariners.
Not for nothin, ump was dead on with those calls. Manager and catcher/batter were wrong…
Blue was right on all those pitches. Managers crying about millimeters when they got the easy job.
When you’re a dad. Sometimes you’re horseshit. But you keep on truckin’
