  • Hello everyone! I am debating on creating a Hardcore Ironman account... and its a lot to take in. So, in hopes of fully convincing myself to take on the challenge, I created this video breaking down all the restrictions Ironman are forced to follow and gave my two cents on them. Hopefully if anyone else out there is in the same boat, we can make the decision together.
    I hope everyone is having a fantastic day, good luck on your grinds and your personal goals, and I hope to see you again, very soon!

    I just recently deironed and tbh im quite happy. I think playing an iron for so long has given me an appreciation for all aspects of the game. I dont treat mainscape as gpscape. I just treat it as playing as i normally would and gp is a form of “dryness protection”. Its all about how you view things. Collection log still gives a decent amount of a dopamine hit as well.

    except there is a HUGE difference in early/mid iron Vs late game iron which you did not take into account.
    Early to mid iron is exploring the game, having fun following the winding paths that you go down every time you realize this goal requires 15 other goals. I love this stage, its the best part of runescape. it doesnt last long though.
    once you get some barrows gear and do song of the elves iron turns completely different. Now you have to solo bandos, zilly, arma. Now you have to grind out and kill stuff/thieve specifically for seeds... then farm those seeds... then gather secondary's, then pay to clean herbs/mix potions 200gp for ea for every herb/potion... then you have to make the potions... then you have to gather food... then cook food... then you have to make money for or runecraft runes.... like hundreds of thousands/millions of runes....
    it starts to become like a job. On one hand, you get super happy about supply/resource drops you wouldnt care about on your main... but on the other hand... you then have to process all of that which takes even more time.
    blood shards, blood runes, soul runes, potions, crystal shards for divine pots... it all starts to become very draining.
    and you literally are forced to become very good at the game or you simply cannot progress. You have to solo everything but raids... which is fine but if you are coming from a maxed main or high level account with decent gear... you often have to grind the boss with worse options...to get the items from the boss... to then not do that content anymore.
    honestly a better option for most people would a collection log locked account. That way you can grind out all the gear and stuff... but you do not have to worry about working a full time job to stay supplied in end game. An official Log locked game mode would be a great middle ground. I would de iron into that immediately.

    I've been playing this game off and on since about 2006 and a month ago I started playing an ironman and I wouldn't go back to a main. Before starting an ironman, I was buying gold then playing a bit until I got bored then dumping it all to a gambling website and repeat a few months later. Ironman mode allows you to get back in touch with the game like you did when you first began your journey but with much more content. The grind sucks but it's just part of it. Items mean much more to an ironman than the average player.

      Getting back in touch with the game I love sounds so amazing. It has been so many years since I’ve started up an account with the only goal to have fun. I have started other accounts with the idea of making like a rune dragon alt or something, and I never had fun revisiting old places. When I start an account with the goal to just progress and have fun, I can image all the old grinds feeling so good to see again. Especially with the new gear we have these days.

    As a decently progressed iron, I wanna add something about the chores part. Imo it's generally vastly overstated how much chores you actually have to do. Farm runs and bird house runs are the big one as unlocking divine super combats takes a very long time. The good thing is that the game really hands you loads of good seeds nowadays between farming contracts, toa, sepulchre and so on. It's nowhere near as slow as it was a couple of years ago. Other big ones are crystal shards for divine pots/crystal armour and bloodshards. Anything else is pretty quick to gather and I personally don't spend much time at all on chores. What I will say is that you can't really rush pvm as much as a main so if you don't want to be insanely scuffed you'll need to do some planning and skilling before getting to the pvm stage of your account.

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад +1

      Very interesting regarding the chores part. Idk it may just be the way I play and what I prefer to do, but I typically don’t get a lot of seeds. Farming contracts and sepulchre just really aren’t my thing. They absolutely should be lol, but I would say majority of the time, at least right now, my main herb growth is actually coming from herb drops and not seeds.

    Fairly endgame iron here. The sense of progression is great as you build up a fortune of your own and go for goals to achieve. The "chores" arent as bad as most say. I do bossing/slayer nearly daily and rarely do herb/birdhouse runs; you get a LOT of herbs/nests.
    The real killer of ironman are the late-game grinds. Going 500 dry at CG for the bowfa, going 1k dry at zulrah for blowpipe, doing 1k TOA for shadow, etc. The ironman gamemode is not designed to work with the ultra-rare items like shadow, tbow, scythe, etc. If you are ok with not having these then it isnt a real issue. If you want them, be prepared for hundreds of hours of grind for one item.
    Overall, highly recommend the gamemode. If you try and end up not liking it then there is no harm in just going back to your main.

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад

      I really think the “chore” aspect of the ironman life is just the normal account lifestyle trying to find some fault in the game mode lol. It has also been years since I start up any new account, so the chores I am thinking of probably have gotten a lot better. Slayer and minigames really do supply a lot of secondaries and other items that I honestly forget about. As for the late game grinds, I honestly kinda look forward to them. Places like the gauntlet hasn’t seen my face for over a year. TOA has really died down for me, and I am focusing on COX. Yeah, the dry streaks are going to make me cry for sure, but also will make me unbelievably happy when they are complete, and I want that satisfaction lol. Maybe this is just blind optimism talking lol. I may change my mind on run 2k at the gauntlet…

    I started a HCIM a little while ago. I'm around 90cb now and I enjoy it every moment so far. Yes the occasional heart attacks are something that keeps you awake but it is so much fun. My main is pretty much "maxed", but nothing feels rewarding anymore. Bank on the main is only approx. 600m, so in no way I got everything, but it just becomes boring.

    Started a HCIM a long long time ago because one of my buddies wanted some company doing the 99 wintertodt grind. Slept on it after that for a year while I finished up maxing my main and then burning out post-max. Once I picked it up again I got myself PK'd to remove the hardcore stress it was like playing the game for the first time all over again, everything was so rewarding and I just woke up wanting to log on every single morning and grind. Highly recommend even if it does slow down massively once you get the mid game out of the way and start hunting the "essentials." Like you said though you have to maintain your skills and resources so there's always something to do if you get bored of your current grind and just want to afk. As of this week my IM bank has surpassed my main :)

    The drawback I found to an iron is being in the lategame and then the only grinds left are things like tbow, scythe, and shadow. Gets boring and irritating doing the same raids ad nauseum and being 1900 total raids kc without a single one of those 3 main megarare weapons in your name. Being an endgame iron also ends up not feeling that much different to a main when you're drowning in thousands of brews, restores, etc. Effectively making you basically a main account but with 2nd rate gear because rng hates you.

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад

      This is a super fair point. I mean most of my time right now is spent inside one of the raids on the main account… however a main account has zero reason to ever leave a raid if they don’t “want” to. Like at some point ironmen are going to run out of something... right? I'm thinking arrows, brews, charges on a staff or something, and that should be a push to go do something else for a while. A main can just take the profits from even the raid and put it right back into sups or whatever they need. That may just be my personal playstyle coming out though. Unless I am like late late game, like I’m talking max account going collection log hunting, I don’t see myself ever getting to the point where I am drowning in brews, restores, and stams.

    Dying every day 3/4 times in the nmz on me hardcore ironman.
    It is easier than you think honestly, it just takes time to get gains which in turn give you the feeling of having earned it.
    Aslong you have played the game there is no other way of enjoying this game after what bots have done to it.
    So much is free gains through bots or other players which you will find out quick enough once you roll the real men account options.

    Just for fun. I will sum up my three top reasons why I never considered ironman myself.
    1) Economy: Since RS was never just about PvM, like other games are, but you can choose from all sorts of activities you enjoy. I always loved the fact that I can earn money and then sell those items to get items I really want. Just like in the real world.
    2) Luck: I always hated luck in games. Even more so if we are talking about hundreds of hours to get what you want. The game doest have so many bosses or minigames because you "should" be doing all of them, but so you can choose what you enjoy doing. = many ways to get to your goal/item. Just the thought of farming a boss that I hate, for tens of hours is horrible.
    3) No replayability: When you finally get an item from boss you wanted on ironman, then there is no reason to kill him again right? Normal accounts have all the money reasons to kill him more. I know getting the first abby whip must be amazing...but what about the second one, or the 10th one? You get absolutely nothing from more of them, but normal accounts are still happy cause its money drop for them. Just imagine the difference in joy when you get the first Osmumtens fang compared to the second one. As a normal account you're gonna be very happy even after the 20th fang you get cause its still money, its still something.
    Eventually, both account types attain similar levels and items; however, the Ironman route demands thousands of additional hours. It's not like the normal game is easy and fast by any means, it's still are such a long grinds and hundred of hours of work, so why making it even more tedious is beyond me :D

    • @dimitriuss
      @dimitriuss 4 месяца назад +1

      agree completely, especially in regards to the economy. It's such a huge aspect of the game and influences your gameplay decisions in a lot of ways.
      I will say as a counterpoint, that most of my burnout in RS comes from a feeling of needing to be efficient in the way I spend my time. Because as you say, theres SO much to do in the game, and I WANT to eventually do it. But my time to play is so severely limited that realistically I need to always be playing efficiently to make meaningful progress towards my goals.
      This means as a mid-player (noob) Il basically always have a "best way" to make what is still minimal GP. Doing any activity that results in less GP earned, is better spent making GP and then buying my progress in whatever skill Im working on.
      Its weird because il technically be able to see more of the game on a main much quicker, and yet, the feeling of needing to play a certain way ruins the journey a bit. Thats really the trade off that I see between the two modes. I do try to not think about efficiency, but its kinda baked into my brain after playing MMOS for so many years.

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад +2

      This is an amazing example of why main accounts rock. The idea of choosing which boss, actives, or skills you want to train based on what you enjoy is something ironman can’t really do lol. The most interesting point here is the re-playability. I guess I never really thought about that. There are going to be some bosses like zulrah or mole that will always have some use post completing the unique there. Zurlah for scales and mole for turn ins for birds nests, but outside of a few bosses like that, I guess when you are done… you really are done. I honestly don’t know how I feel about that lol. On one hand I think awesome, I never have to go back to vorkath because I have everything, but on the other hand I do really enjoy vorkath lol. I guess right now my main excuse for that is the amount of content in the game. Sure finishing up vorkath may suck, but there are hundreds of other things to do so I don’t have to worry about it so much. Very interesting point!

      You say what reason is there to do a boss again after getting a drop, but mains have a similar issue. Why do any boss other than the one that makes you the most money? Why do DKs when you can do Vorkath. That's one of the main things that burnt me out on my main and got me into my iron. Not to mention a lot of bosses aren't just farmed for the uniques, but the resources. Zulrah gives scales, Vorkath gives consistent dragon ammo, Mole gives nests, etc. On a main most of these drops are just converted to gp instead of being used as a resource, and that's just boring to me.

      Everything that you said is the reason why I prefer to play an iron. You're whole account is define by the gp value of your bank. Every item is the same. The lightbearer is an amazing ring but why would you want that when you could've got a 47th fang. Why do any content that isn't max gp/h. Before starting my iron I was spending more time at the ge flipping than actually playing the game. Recently I got a second pair of ranger boots at 33kc personnaly I would have preferred spiked manacle but it was still hype as fuck and 30m for the main

    2000+ total level on my iron, personally ive had enough herb runs for a lifetime from trying to make money on my main. luckily it's easy to make money on a midgame iron, and kingdom exists to provide almost all the herbs i need.
    the worst part of iron for me is the difference in luck. ive gotten stupid lucky on some drops, like getting berserker ring and d axe within 10 kills, dwh in about 20, etc. meanwhile went over double the droprate on d pick and still dont have my faceguard after ~3k knights on task.
    long grinds can be fun but some amount of RNG mitigation would go a long way imo. venator shards are great, we should have more things like that.

      I am super glad I am not the only one that is fed up with farming runs due to just needed cash on the main lol! But I am glad to see that making money on an iron and kingdom helps out as much as it does. As it sits right now… I think its been almost a year since I have checked my throne on the main account because I just don’t care lol.
      The difference in luck on some grinds is going to be very interesting. This main account has seen some unbelievable luck, and I know that is going to bite me when I start up the iron. Whether it be the blowpipe grind, the seed from gauntlet, or something else like you mentioned. I honestly don’t know how I feel about RNG mitigation like you mentioned. On one hand, there are some bosses that I want to be done with as quick as possible, but that also feels like it takes away part of the game/fun/reward for me… it’s a weird subject I change my mind about quite often lol. Like Muspah is one boss I want to be done with as fast as possible because I just don't like the grind that much.

    I'll be honest, I think starting a hardcore just because "why not" is a trap. I think one of the most fun times in a runescape account is when it is brand new. All those levels and progressing quickly through gears and methods is a dopamine rush you aren't afforded later in an account's lifespan. Making yourself a hardcore and being stressed out about dying kinda dampens the experience in my opinion, especially if you know you are probably going to lose it at some point early on anyway. Might as well just start as a regular iron and just not worry about it. It's easy to say you don't care, but it does affect how you play, the thought is always there.

      as someone who was in the same boat and decided to make an iron... 1900 total and 2000+ hours later... I just collection log locked myself for gear on my main account instead. The "iron main" mode that 9 rain does. that way i can just buy supplies and not worry about working a second job before i can even start the grinds.
      but seeing how he burnt out pretty hard several times being stuck at grinds... i allowed myself 1 item i dont have in my collection log. Then i either have to obtain that item to free up that slot, or never pick another item. For example, moons of peril suck without at least the melee weapon from there... so use that as my one unlock and then once i got it as a drop... i could pick something else. Going dry at G or CG? simply use your unlock for the enhanced seed and get the bowfa + Blade... allowing you to progress to dozens of other boss grinds... but also making it so you can do 1-5 CG a day for however long it takes to unlock... instead of being trapped there for 6+ months only doing that and hating it... like so many RUclipsrs have been and has caused them to burn out.
      I went through legit like 2 months of playing each account like every other day because i couldnt make up my mind... then i realized, with a main i have the freedom to solo whatever... but i am not locked behind it. I can go to GWD with friends or do raids and get splits... and buy tons of supplies or make cool items stacks in my bank... or buy rare items just to have them. I can also use the drops i get if i feel like it.. or sell them if i dont. I can use blood furies to make a grind more enjoyable... and not have to worry about the dozens or hundreds of hours of afk or spam thieving it would take to get more.
      I have been afking and leveling up relaxing on my iron... not worry so much about getting gear and simply just playing it here and there actively for actual fun and trying out new content... but my main account is where i have been and will be going for log slots and doing endgame pvm. I might max my iron on the side... but i wont be going for max gear on it any time soon.

    This is just my opinion but if you aren't super well versed in PVM and the mechanics of OSRS it's not worth doing a HCIM. The "might aswell choose a hardcore" mindset is bad simply because you have to play the game a lot more careful, worried and stressed constantly (especially if you aren't very confident in your ability to keep yourself alive). It was not a fun way to play the game for me. Also you will forever appear as a failed hardcore ironman on the high scores (if you care about that), so I actually chose just a normal ironman. If for some reason I am still playing the game in 5 years time and I am very good at the game I might consider a HCIM then. Also if you're just going to play the HCIM like a normal ironman then the case can also be made that you might aswell just play a normal ironman without the potential embarrassment of dying early and that forever being on the highscores attached to your character xD

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад

      Oh interesting. So if you have a hardcore account right, lets say you reach base 40s on that account and that appears on the high scores, and then you die but continue to play the account, you don’t get any high score on normal ironman page? Like you effectively have just became a normal ironman account then right? And I would assume that the ironman page would track your account? If it does not… then that does change my mind on playing a hardcore lmao. I was under the impression that if I had a hardcore account die and continued to play it, it would still be tracked somewhere lol. Everything else about this comment is super true. It’s takes a different person to even consider ironman, but its on a whole other level to consider hardcore.

    I made a HCIM last year after multiple years away from the game and it is the most fun I have ever had with my 20+ years on and off with runescape. It is only a few dozen levels from maxing with all 'buyables' banked still with hardcore intact. Definitely advise playing hardcore as you mentioned, as the current ironman non hardcore meta is pretty main-light right now. Normal ironmen just rush wildy for infinite cash and supplies, then rush corrupted gauntlet for free left click every boss bow, and then just camp raids for all 3 mega rare weapons. Hardcores generally have to actually play the full progression of the game, especially if trying to keep an account alive rather than remaking a bunch of high risk rush accounts. High end supplies like brews, sanfews, guthix rests, moonlight antelopes, phoenix necklaces, and the such all feel far more rewarding too as every best in slot food is a shield for the status.
    Personally questing and going dry tends to not be too big of an impact. There is normally a decent easy to obtain downgrade for nearly anything in the game. Warhammer has Bone Dagger, BowFa has Crystal Bow, and similar things. It also can lead to a shift in object based on what not going dry on. I don't like raids, so melee will always be the strongest style. This made things like going for Nex more enticing as Torva would be a great assistance to it. But if getting something like a ZCB there it could shift the need to get Blowpipe, Serp Helm, and Ring of Endurance to go get the ACB from Sara. Personally at a point right now where I have Bandos Chestplate at 8 kc and Torva Full Helm at 1,100 kc (both extremely under drop rate) making it so the next best move is to camp Nex even more for a 2nd Torva piece to breakdown the chestplate, but likely wouldn't have gone Nex if it wasn't for the early bandos drop influencing progression. Similar can happen when doing dry. If 15k kills no dragon warhammer, this makes ToB less viable, but ToA more viable, but also makes getting 99 slayer and heart more viable doing the warhammer grind alongside slayer.

    A way to explain ironman mode is. Say you buy a 1000 puzzle. An ironman has to finnish the puzzle by him self and when done you get to be very happy and proud. A non ironman player will first buy the 1000 puzzle and they put some gp on it and pay for it to be finnished. No pride, no joy

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад

      While I think there is truth to that. I don’t want to say there is no pride in it. Afterall, buying a TBow is a huge accomplishment. But without a doubt, there is more pride in achieving goals on an iron.

    Hc status is trash IMO. You know how many times I’ve lagged out and have perfect internet connection? Probably 10+.
    If the servers were fixed it would mean something.
    Hc status means you are lucky enough to not lag out in a bad spot due to mass bot changing worlds, and you can do CG.

      Hahaha I would love to make an ironman here soon, and I would agree that the normal ironman is the way to go. I will probably start with a hardcore though, simply because its going to be hilarious to lose my status to a goblin or something stupid xD

    look i dont mean to sound rude but in the video you make it sound like the no trading rule is mostly a downside to you... but that is the WHOLE POINT of ironman mode.
    like what joy would you find in making an ironman if you dont like the concept of not being able to trade

    • @SignedNick
      @SignedNick  4 месяца назад

      I am sorry if I came off that way, it was definitely not intended lol. I agree that the whole point of ironman mode is to do everything alone, and that concept cannot be true if you are able to trade other players. The huge point I was trying to highlight in that section is to point out that that restriction changes way more in the game than some people (including me!) realize. Maybe this is a me only thing, but when I think of trading players, the main three things I think about when I want to trade someone is gear, food, and supplies. Specifically arrows, runes, scales, something to help make my weapon work lol. Maybe it is just the normal account mindset, but I needed that reality check that luxury items for low level accounts like stamina potions will not be available on an ironman account. I am not trying to knock down the restriction there. I really like the idea of ironman mode, enough that I am convinced that I will start one up here soon. In no way would I want this restriction to change.
