@@snapcracklenpop821It is very patchy but I like the version of 'Dazed and Confused' plus the live version of 'No Quarter' contains possibly my favourite ever Page solo.
as a life-long Zep fan, i have to say that i almost 100% agree with your ranking, but i have my own reasons. the ONLY thing i'd consider swapping is "In Through The Out Door" and "Presence." i love them both dearly, but i think "In Through" is the stronger album, and that's due to John Paul Jones's contributions and direction, pointing to the band to the 80s. but really, like "Physical Graffiti" and "LZ II" it's a coin toss for me. "Presence" has John Bonham's strongest drumming, i think... anyway, hard to say. but a solid ranking.
I was 14 when In through the Outdoor was released. I didn't know Led Zep but I bought the album and loved it. For me it was the gateway to the rest of their work so I rank it high. I can listen to it now and feel the same way I did then. It was my Led Zeppelin. So for me it is ITOD followed by II then IV then I.
Great ranking! In Through The Outdoor has a certain charm to it. I love the proggy feel of some of the songs. My favorite Zep album is Houses of the Holy. I also love IV and Presence! Thanks for sharing🤟🏻
I can't argue with that... I think you're right. Physical Graffiti is my personal favorite, Prescence is wildly underrated, I gotta go get my zeppelin out and revisit 3 and Houses!!
Ahmet and Nasuhi Ertegun, founders of Atlantic Records, were extremely knowledgable about the history of American music. It was their passion, as much as it was to British Invasion bands like The Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Yardbirds (LZ was originally "The New Yardbirds), John Mayall... I always wondered why they let LZ slap their names on songs that anybody who knew the blues would instantly recognize. There was a time when folk/blues musicians freely "borrowed" and adapted from traditional songs and from one another -- but those days were long gone by the 1960s when the recording industry had became a major international corporate concern! Did they think it was still just common practice -- or did they just think they could get away with it, the way early samplers tried to claim "fair use" of looped drum breaks and fragments of older recordings? Even if the young white English blues fans didn't know any better, surely the Erteguns did.
1. Houses of the Holy 2. I 3. IV 4. II 5. Physical Grafitti 6. In through the out door 7. III 8. Presence 9. Coda Not to forget the Live Albums, especially The BBC Sessions
Just found your channel recently. I really love this rundown of Zep's stuff. I grew up with these guys and their hands down one of my favorite bands. You had some really good comments about the albums. This is the order I would put them in: 9- Coda 8- In Through the Outdoor 7- Houses of the Holy 6- Presence 5- Led Zeppelin I 4- Led Zeppelin 4 3- Led Zeppelin 3 2- Led Zeppelin 2 1- Physical Graffiti Physical Graffiti came out when I was 16 so that probably has something to do with it :). I still listen to that record in its entirety on a regular basis.
Love this video, I really appreciate you putting physical graffiti higher on the list, some of their best work lyrically and musically and people always put it in like 4th or 5th place, glad to see someone finally give it the credit it is due!
@@guitarzen7080 In The Evening and Carouselambra are two of my favourite Zeppelin songs and there are several others on the album that I also rate such as All My Love, Fool in the Rain and I'm Gonna Crawl .
Dazed and Confused doesn't have the same lyrics as the original, but the Yardbirds version is closer to the Zep version. In that, even the drum composition is similar! Since I've been Loving' You is also a cover, Gallow's Pole is a traditional. It seems that JPJ was the best songwriter in Led Zeppelin.
I have re-listened to this video, and I think that with Zeppelin, like other great artists, you have to make 2 lists - one that is objective and is only concerned with craft and musicality, the other a favourites list. Here is my favourite list: 1. In through the out door 2. Led Zeppelin 111 3. Presence 4. Led Zeppelin 2 5. Physical Graffitti 6. Led Zeppelin 7. Led Zeppelin 1V 8. Houses of the Holy. I love ITTOD so much because it came out when I was in my teens, and it seemed very of its time. 111 has always been a favourite and also Presence. I feel that on Houses of the Holy, they tried to branch out but for some reason it doesn't connect well with me, except a few songs. My objective list: 1. Led Zeppelin 1V 2. Physical Graffitti 3. Led Zeppelin 111 4. Led Zeppelin 2 5. Houses of the Holy 6. Led Zeppelin 7. In through the out door 8. Presence.
I think it’s safe to say that Coda will always be at the bottom of any list! Brave man tho for putting IV so low. It has the hits but I totally see what you mean. III is perhaps my favorite Zeppelin album and I have a lot of time for Presence. Enjoyable video! May have to tackle this topic myself! Cheers and stay safe.

My rankings which may surprise you: 9. In Through The Outdoor 8. Houses of The Holy 7. Prescence 6. Coda 5. Physical Graffiti 4. Led Zeppelin IV 3. Led Zeppelin I 2. Led Zeppelin III 1. Led Zeppelin II
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is NOT a traditional song. It was written by a folk singer in the 1950's named Anne Bredon. Jimmy Page assumed it was a traditional song because he could not find song writing info about it. Years later Bredon became aware of Zeppelin's recording of the song and was paid a large sum of back royalties. Since then, Zeppelin altered the song writing credits from "traditional" to Bredon on copies of Led Zeppelin I.

Led Zep III is their most brilliant album and I've been saying this for a long time now.Everything is a masterpiece and even Hats off to (Roy Harper).Seems to go over a lot of people's head that one ! Such a unique track, masterful !!
I do not understand why some people consider Coda to be a studio album! It clearly isn't. A collection of outtakes and live cuts is not the definition of a studio album!
My picks would go: 1) Houses of the Holy 2) III 3) Presence 4) Physical Graffiti 5) II 6) IV 7) I 8) In through the out door My favorite Zep songs are all on the first three listed above.

You've turned me onto some great music that I missed many years ago, just got a re-issue of Townes Van Zandt. What a great record! Thanks, Bill
Physical Graffiti is a compilation of outakes and recordings going back to Zep III, that they didn't choose, as well as new tunes they wrote for that album, hence the double album after " Zep IV" and "Houses" Is it fair to compare it to their single LP's? I mentioned this point to a band mate wanting to compare the Beatles White album to other Beatle records. There is twice the length and music. You can compare The Who's " Tommy " to "Quadrophenia " as they are both double albums. We can all pick our favorites. Harrison's " All Things Must Pass " had three records. Is it a fair comparison to to the other post- Beatle solo LP's? It's just a question.

“Carouselambra” is a cool song, especially when it slows down about 4 and 1/2 minutes into the song. And there were 6 different album cover perspectives, they’re A through F and came in the mystery brown paper bag.

One of the best things I've done was get all of Zeppelin's studio albums. Listening in order is an amazing experience. As for Coda I think of it like Autumn Equinox for Pink Floyd. It's stuff that didn't really make the cut.
Of all the "borrowing" Led Zeppelin did, the intro to Stairway to Heaven ranks very minor to me. It's just the intro; you could remove it or change it from the song and it's still tremendous.

I like your distinction between best vs favorite. As great as the songs of the LZ3 are - is recording and mastering - or simply the sound of LZ3 not good? I like LZ3 in a car. I tried different pressings on my (not bad) home stereo - not a good sounding record!

If I was to pick the best LZ album, II is the one which has always resonated with me too. They take the blues based rock of I to a totally different level here and with Ramble On, for the first time we see that trademark fusion of folk/rock, acoustic/electric which was to become like a signature for their sound over the next decade. It's raw, it's powerful and 50 years on still sounds relevant. Excellent choice.
With respect, Blackwaterside is a traditional Irish folk song that was popularized by Bert Jansch, who was every bit the great guitarist you state, but he did nor write it. Best version of that song IMHO is Sandy Denny's on The North Star Grassman and The Ravens album.
Hi Dillon, a Zep-a-Thon sounds pretty awesome right now. I would have put Physical first and switched Presence and ITTOD, but pretty much right on. What is your favorite live zep opener? I know they opened a lot with Train Kept a Rollin, but I was never a big fan of that. -Kimbo
I agree with your ranking. When I became more musically fluent I became disillusioned with Zep because they were not crediting the actual song writers.
Great job! It’s difficult to do, but I like the order. I got Zeppelin II from my Dad when I was 10, so it’s always been my favorite, but I played Physical Graffiti more throughout the years. The lyrics hit me more and like you said, Jimmy’s tone was just killer on that album. And in the end, it’s all about tone!
‘In Through The Out Door’ has shot up high on my list over the years simply because the vibe just feels so much more genuine and humbled. The early records are very much trying to impress you, which they DO, but frankly the schtick gets old after a while. Music is a form of storytelling, and when that story is mostly “Look how awesome I am”, ya know, there really isn’t much substance there after a while. I used to worship Zep just like the rest of us, but once the hero worship and pleasure trip fades you’re left looking at a band who’s goal was to be the greatest, and not much more. Boy, did they accomplish that on some level, but in the end Bonham said he wanted to quit drums because he was no longer the greatest, so what does that tell you? Zeppelin’s a weird realm for me, and they’re no doubt great, but the hero worship is off the map, and the fandom can be toxic, drones of zombies regurgitating that they’re objectively the greatest, as if there even is such a thing. It’s just weird, and all the occult stuff doesn’t help lol. I’m sure some people will be offended by this for whatever reason but it is what it is.
99% of bands would trade their souls to make the 'worst' LZ album.

Song Remains The Same. Kinda awful, but otherwise I agree. Even Coda is a great album. And with Bonzo's Montreaux it really was a Zep album, compilation or not.
First 4 albums are 100% perfect after that .....kinda meh a few good songs but overall good but not great.
@@manchesterexplorer8519 Not a fan of Physical Graffiti?
@@chadanderson9872 the latter albums all have a few good songs on them so yes . I just prefer the Raw rock n roll sound of the first 4 .
Great Ranking I basically agree LZ is my second fav group of all time The Doors is my #1 would love to get your ranking on my Jimbos albums
1) Physical Graffiti, 2) IV, 3) Houses, 4) Presence, 5) III, 6) II, 7) I, 8) In Through the Out Door
Yay!!!!🥳🥳🥳mine too friend
Mine too!!!!😅
Nice list but the Moby Dick riff wasn't written by Jimmy Page, it was stolen from a blues artist. John Lennon also used it on I Feel Fine
“Good artists borrow, great artists steal” Pablo Picasso
Take the money and run..lol
I wonder where did Picasso stole this quote from...
So are you stealing or borrowing from Picasso ?
Definitely stealing😉
Obviously your a guy that doesn’t appreciate plagiarism, I don’t blame you !
Great video, I would love to see more artist rankings from you in the future!
Thank you!
Great ranking! In Through The Outdoor has a certain charm to it. I love the proggy feel of some of the songs. My favorite Zep album is Houses of the Holy. I also love IV and Presence! Thanks for sharing🤟🏻
You mentioned 3 in another vid so o will once again say bron-yr-aur stomp is amazing, amazing, flipping amazing
I can't argue with that... I think you're right. Physical Graffiti is my personal favorite, Prescence is wildly underrated, I gotta go get my zeppelin out and revisit 3 and Houses!!
Because of you, I listened to Taurus by Spirit. Page & Plant certainly used part of that tune, but they took it to the highest level possible.
ain't nothing wrong with a Zeppelin Quarantine-a-thon. You can guess my favorite.
Many thanks! Have 6, had 6 already on my wants list...now have 8 more!
That’s a good point!
1. Houses of the Holy
2. I
3. IV
4. II
5. Physical Grafitti
6. In through the out door
7. III
8. Presence
9. Coda
Not to forget the Live Albums, especially The BBC Sessions
Just found your channel recently. I really love this rundown of Zep's stuff.
I grew up with these guys and their hands down one of my favorite bands. You had some really good comments about the albums. This is the order I would put them in:
9- Coda
8- In Through the Outdoor
7- Houses of the Holy
6- Presence
5- Led Zeppelin I
4- Led Zeppelin 4
3- Led Zeppelin 3
2- Led Zeppelin 2
1- Physical Graffiti
Physical Graffiti came out when I was 16 so that probably has something to do with it :). I still listen to that record in its entirety on a regular basis.
Awesome vid man. Your excitement and love are apparent. Really enjoyed watching this.
Love this video, I really appreciate you putting physical graffiti higher on the list, some of their best work lyrically and musically and people always put it in like 4th or 5th place, glad to see someone finally give it the credit it is due!
In through the out door was probably my favorite. He didnt mention Im gonna crawl. This album kicks ass.
I also like the album a lot but all of these reviewers tend to have it as Zeppelin's worst studio recording .
@@TheHumbuckerboy yeah I dont understand that
@@guitarzen7080 In The Evening and Carouselambra are two of my favourite Zeppelin songs and there are several others on the album that I also rate such as All My Love, Fool in the Rain and I'm Gonna Crawl .
@@TheHumbuckerboy those are all fantastic. In the Eeeeavenin… bownt noww na now now nowwww. Epic!
@@TheHumbuckerboy Yep! Love it when JP breaks out the Strat!
Led Zeppelin II, absolutely the best🥇
Dazed and Confused doesn't have the same lyrics as the original, but the Yardbirds version is closer to the Zep version. In that, even the drum composition is similar! Since I've been Loving' You is also a cover, Gallow's Pole is a traditional. It seems that JPJ was the best songwriter in Led Zeppelin.
For me (Today) :
1 Presence
2. Houses of the Holy
3 Coda (Love it Today)
4 IV
5 Physical Graffiti
6 In throug the Out Door
7 III
8 II
9 I
How can you not mention CAROUSELAMBRA from In through the out door?
That is an EPIC track
Totally agree !
Yes!!
I have re-listened to this video, and I think that with Zeppelin, like other great artists, you have to make 2 lists - one that is objective and is only concerned with craft and musicality, the other a favourites list.
Here is my favourite list:
1. In through the out door
2. Led Zeppelin 111
3. Presence
4. Led Zeppelin 2
5. Physical Graffitti
6. Led Zeppelin
7. Led Zeppelin 1V
My objective list:
1. Led Zeppelin 1V
2. Physical Graffitti
3. Led Zeppelin 111
4. Led Zeppelin 2
5. Houses of the Holy
6. Led Zeppelin
7. In through the out door
The Record Spinner Nope, that awful live album. Bought it the week it came out and I’ve only played it 3 times in 40 +years. I’ve heard better bootlegs than that.
Not for me, lol!
I don’t hate you, actually I love you for being a great Zep appreciator. My number one today is lLed II.
Zepplin III - Since I’ve Been Loving You, my absolute favorite Zeppelin song. Can’t get enough of it.
Obviously you are familiar with what is called A WOMAN. "I'm about to lose, my worried mind, oh, oh."
I never could’ve put that list together, as it changes over time, but I certainly commend you on your efforts. They just did everything they played in such a masterful way. Damn, they’re just so awesome! Excellent vid, m’man! Thanks, Dillon!
Thanks man! I agree
My rankings which may surprise you:
9. In Through The Outdoor
8. Houses of The Holy
7. Prescence
6. Coda
5. Physical Graffiti
4. Led Zeppelin IV
3. Led Zeppelin I
2. Led Zeppelin III
1. Led Zeppelin II
CAROUSELAMBRA is an epic track and very ambitious
Agreed
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is NOT a traditional song. It was written by a folk singer in the 1950's named Anne Bredon. Jimmy Page assumed it was a traditional song because he could not find song writing info about it. Years later Bredon became aware of Zeppelin's recording of the song and was paid a large sum of back royalties. Since then, Zeppelin altered the song writing credits from "traditional" to Bredon on copies of Led Zeppelin I.
I remember reading years ago that Presence was Zepelin's favorite.
My Updated Led Zeppelin album rankings
9. Coda
8. Presence
7. In Through The Out Door
6. Led Zeppelin III
5. Houses Of The Holy
4. Untitled
3. Led Zeppelin II
2. Led Zeppelin
1. Physical Graffiti
My list :
9. Coca
8. In Through The Out Door
7. Led Zeppelin II
6. Presence
5. Led Zeppelin
4. Houses Of The Holy
3. Led Zeppelin III
2. Physical Graffiti
1. Led Zeppelin IV
I love Zeppelin. Have since I was a kid.
Led Zep III is their most brilliant album and I've been saying this for a long time now.Everything is a masterpiece and even Hats off to (Roy Harper).Seems to go over a lot of people's head that one ! Such a unique track, masterful !!
that songs unlistenable, but I agree on the other things
I do not understand why some people consider Coda to be a studio album! It clearly isn't. A collection of outtakes and live cuts is not the definition of a studio album!
My picks would go:
1) Houses of the Holy
2) III
3) Presence
4) Physical Graffiti
5) II
6) IV
7) I
8) In through the out door
My favorite Zep songs are all on the first three listed above.
Like the list cause House of the Holy is number 1.
Man, you are such a great storyteller! Now I'm going to have as you put it a "Zep-a-thon". Thanks for the entertainment and the frequent educational content. You've turned me onto some great music that I missed many years ago, just got a re-issue of Townes Van Zandt. What a great record!
Thanks,
Bill
Isn't Physical Graffiti made up of some new songs and some tracks that were originally made for earlier albums, but didn't make the cut ?
Physical Graffiti is a compilation of outakes and recordings going back to Zep III, that they didn't choose, as well as new tunes they wrote for that album, hence the double album after " Zep IV" and "Houses"
Is it fair to compare it to their single LP's?
I mentioned this point to a band mate wanting to compare the Beatles White album to other Beatle records.
There is twice the length and music.
You can compare The Who's " Tommy " to "Quadrophenia " as they are both double albums.
We can all pick our favorites.
Harrison's " All Things Must Pass " had three records. Is it a fair comparison to to the other post- Beatle solo LP's?
It's just a question.
Great ranking, but how about mentioning some of the worst / lesser tracks as well as the outstanding tracks ?
Finally someone likes Physical Graffiti as much as I do! I've seen it get a lot of hate for having a lot of filler but I only dislike one song.
There Best Album Still kicks ASS
No, almost everyone loved Physical Graffetti. You are not alone
9: Coda
8: Led Zeppelin II
7: Presence
6: In Through the Out Door
5: Led Zeppelin I
4: Led Zeppelin IV
3: Led Zeppelin III
2: Houses of the Holy
1: Physical Graffiti
“Carouselambra” is a cool song, especially when it slows down about 4 and 1/2 minutes into the song. And there were 6 different album cover perspectives, they’re A through F and came in the mystery brown paper bag.
Ever consider doing your best album side top 10? Zep 2 Side 2 would be in the running for me.
IV has
- Black Dog
- Misty Mountain Hop
- Four Sticks
- Battle of Evermore
I think Zeppelin 4 (untitled) is one of the best albums in history but one of Zeppelin's weakest albums.
@@johngill2853 gotta take IV over Presence and In Through the Out Door.
@@SmartDave60 yes and Coda but that is all that I feel it's better than in The Zeppelin catalog. But I'd still say it's one of the best 50 albums in history
@@johngill2853 I remember when Coda came out.

I'd go
1. Physical Graffiti
2. Houses of the Holy
3. LZ III
4. LZ IV
5. LZ II
6. LZ I
7. In Through the Out Door
8. Presence
The 4th album at the number 6 spot? No way bro! 😮 After 'Presence', it would be either 'Houses of the Holy' or the 3rd album.
It's just the intro; you could remove it or change it from the song and it's still tremendous.
my ranking:
1. Led Zeppelin II
2. Led Zeppelin IV
3. Houses of the Holy
4. Physical Graffiti
5. Led Zeppelin
6. In Through the Out Door
7. Led Zeppelin III
8. Presence
9. Coda (yes ik it doesnt really count)
Love them all, lifelong fan. Enjoying the channel bud. Would like to visit the store some day. From the "land of the ice and snow", up in Toronto, saying get the Led out!!!
Why didn't they release Hey Hey what can I do on III? I believe they released it as a B side to Immigrant Song on a 45. It always bugged me they didnt have it on the back side of III, where it would of fit perfectly.
I was a huge zeppelin fan when I was 12 13 years old but when I got to be around 20 21 I got a little burned out on them just because I listened to them so much but here recently I’ve started listening again and it’s like I’m 12 all over again failing back in love with the Led
Man as a fellow Zep fan/nut I hear you when you talk about that powerful breakdown on whole lotta love! The only other song I can think of that has THAT strong of a punch and gives you that euphoric feeling in/after the break down is Money after the frantic guitar/saxophone solo when they convert back into the main riff. Oooof! Absolutely incredible!
My opinion has changed a bit over the years, but my ranking has been steady for a while...
1. Houses of the Holy
2. Physical Graffiti
3. Zep II
4. Zep III
5. Presence
6. Zep IV
7. Zep I
8. In Through the Out Door
There is no such thing as a worst to best album ranking for Led Zeppelin... Other than that you are doing a awesome job! Thank you

I 100% empathise with every decision you made. Zeppelin are my all time favourite band and I can feel your passion in the way you talk about the albums. Great ranking. You should do your favourite tracks. Achilles Last Stand will always hold my number 1.
I like your distinction between best vs favorite.
As great as the songs of the LZ3 are - is recording and mastering - or simply the sound of LZ3 not good? I like LZ3 in a car. I tried different pressings on my (not bad) home stereo - not a good sounding record!
Great video Dylan.. I love LZ as well. My ranking would be.. LZ1, Physical Graffiti, LZII, LZIII, LZIV, Presence, Houses Of The Holy.. I was the first guy on my block to buy LZ1 when it came out and there literally was a lineup outside my door to come in and hear it so it has special meaning to me. I saw LZ at a relatively small venue in Toronto in 1969 just when LZII was coming out so it also has a high personal ranking. Over the years, Physical Graffiti has become my most go to LZ album... thanks for doing this...Glen Kellaway
Great episode! What's your oppinion of CODA by the way? How about a part two , talking about these DELUXE reissue records that Jimmy Page brought out a few years ago? Funnily, the only one that I bought was CODA, because I thought that its bonus content was worth the price!!

3 has always been my favorite
LZ III for me. Starts with an absolute banger too.
Credit for properly ranking IV.
