I am a huge Zeppelin fan too! It's kind of funny but I was born in '67 and around the time I was old enough to really enjoy music my dad started not allowing me to listen to rock and roll. I had to sneak my listening in when I could but I really didn't get my full exposure to LZ until probably 1981 or 1982. I found an 8-track tape my dad had created with his Macintosh system and Roberts R7 reel to reel/8-track machine. It was Led Zeppelin III but I fell in love with the songs. I started buying cassette tapes and hiding them and listening when I could.
Within a few years I was up in my teenage years and I was able to start listening again without having to hide it so much. One of the big reasons was my dad had to work out of town a lot of the time and then he finally just kind of let off of telling me I couldn't listen to rock and roll. But I had all of the albums and of course I bought all of the CDs as I got older and they started coming out. And I still have all of these today. But then came the next stage...
Somewhere in the early '90s I started trading and getting Led Zeppelin live recordings AKA bootlegs. And I've been collecting those ever since. I literally have thousands of them and a lot of them are the same shows or outtakes and studio recordings but they're different labels, generations, etc in the recordings. Some are much better sounding than the others. I did not hardly listen to any of the official studio stuff for years. In fact, once the internet got involved and you could get the losses, or non-mp3 or compressed sources, of masters and low generation sources being shared for free, I spent no telling how much time making collecting a part of each and every day. I love Led Zeppelin live and I just wasn't even listening to studio stuff other than if I heard it on a radio station or something like that. And now it seems like things are coming full circle haha.
I'd still been buying the occasional LP here and there when I'd come across a rare Led Zeppelin boot. I knew that I was going to be getting back into vinyl since I've always liked the sound and media of it the best. But about 3 years ago I finally bought myself a new turntable and what did I start off buying? The Led Zeppelin Deluxe set remasters of course. And really not only those but a lot of other Led Zeppelin rarities and official releases on vinyl. And of course, like yourself, I'd always been buying the DVDs and blu-rays and updates of everything that came along. But here in the last 3 years, I haven't been listening to the bootlegs as much and I've been listening to the LPs again while still searching for rare, both official and non-official, Led Zeppelin LPs.
Of course, the music I love but I think another part of the fun has always been the collecting of what I love too. Nobody will ever get everything that has been put out by the band. It's just impossible especially with the bootlegs. But the cool thing with the bootlegs is that there are still new shows, soundboards, and just all kinds of Led Zeppelin recordings that are still surfacing even today. It's hard to believe so much time has passed and I still have what I started buying after hearing that homemade Led Zeppelin III 8-track tape :-) I might have gotten a late start but I have definitely been catching up!
I'm going to quit rambling on haha! And I'm like you in the sense that I love all of the Led Zeppelin recordings. I do know that one of my least favorite songs is Kashmir. A lot of people love that one but that one and the studio release of Hats Off To Roy Harper have always been my least favorites. I still can't decide if Led Zeppelin II or maybe Physical Graffiti is my favorite though?

Hi Brian - thanks for your amazing, personal story. Fascinating with your dad limiting what you can listen too. Nice, in a way, to hear that rock and Zeppelin in particular was still dangerous music to some people, in the 70's. Fascinating about your going full circle - the albums, then going down the huge and endless Zeppelin bootleg rabbit hole. And then coming back to those massive deluxe boxset reissues. I have an amazing huge hardcover book by Ross Halfin called Led Zeppelin Vinyl - the Essential Collection which shows hundreds of vinyl Zeppelin bootlegs - fascinating stuff. Thanks for contributing such a great personal story...awesome.

Ranking Led Zeppelin’s nine studio albums is no easy task, and I am pretty much in sync with how you positioned the LPs. For me, “Led Zeppelin IV” and “Houses of the Holy” are tied at #2. I think the absolutely excellent “Physical Graffiti” deserves your number 1 rating. It is proof positive that Led Zeppelin is so much more than a blues-based hard rock band. A four-sided tour de force, the album contains truly great songs (and no filler!), which when taken as a whole are representative of virtually every style of music that is covered by the umbrella of rock ‘n’ roll. To this day, the songs on “Physical Graffiti” never give me anything less than an amazing listening experience. I first heard several of the songs - before the album even dropped - when I saw Led Zeppelin in concert in 1975. There I was in the third row of seats, on the floor of Madison Square Garden, directly in front of the golden G-d, himself, Robert Plant when the band played “Kashmir” - and I had an out-of-body experience. (I’m happy to report that Robert looked as great close-up as he did in the poster of him that I had on my ceiling, over my bed.) You know a new album is spectacular when you’re first hearing most of the songs on it via a live performance - and you’re blown away by what you’re hearing! The new songs were Interspersed with Zeppelin classics and deep cuts. I still remember the intensity of “No Quarter” as one of the greatest of many great performances during the concert. (I think that John Paul Jones was a secret weapon.) When the house lights went on, three hours after the band kicked off the concert with “Rock and Roll,” I still hadn’t come back down to earth. I’ve read from various sources throughout the years that Led Zeppelin can be sloppy in concert. Having seen the band perform live three times, I can honestly say that the band was superb on all three occasions. I share your respect for Robert Plant for his refusal to accept a king’s ransom to provide a brief resurrection of what’s left of Led Zeppelin. Apparently, he is a very rare being, especially in the world of entertainment: a person who stands by his principles, no matter what.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Год назад

You’re so lucky to have seen the mighty Zeppelin three times and 3rd row at MSG. Incredible. Love the out of body experience with Kashmir. The true power of music you so magically described. Wasn’t it amazing how the bands back then not only played new music but even before it was released. Pink Floyd played whole albums before they were released. Back when fans cared and were committed to the music. Even Springsteen now has joined every one else reduced to pretty much playing the hits because that’s what the audience demands.

Yes it sure was and it sure got a lot of airplay on classic rock radio here in the states. Still does, though I think I tend to hear Over The Hills And Far Away the most from HOTH on commercial broadcast radio on the rare occasions I listen to it in the car. @@FuturePast2019

There are no totally bad LZ albums.
Agree on the studio Moby Dick, the live versions of that song blows the studio version out of water IMO.
The first box set was a bit of a disappointment for me, no Good Times Bad Times (major ommission!), and only a few unreleased songs, plus I would have preferred chronological order instead of that wonky playlist type order that Page compiled.

@@jasonpp1973 I agree there are no bad LZ albums. But I do have to be in the mood for their live excessive jams. Great when I am. Long when I’m not. Lol. Live Moby Dick included.

Yep - I show all the albums in the ranking. Film live - I counted one of the albums twice (think it was Houses of the Holy) because I have multiple versions of each album and an extra snuck in there.

Went to Jimmy page 9 million pounds Buckinghamshire Tudor mansion. Guitarist friend took me. Clapton beck Ronnie wood was there. All great. I was not bothered by rock stars. Ruined slightly by Pamela Anderson yes her. She was drunk and a idiot. Shame we all lusted after her. But she was an idiot. No fan since. My friend was a session guitarist mostly for pop bands. Physical graffiti for me. In my time of dying is my go to track. All Zeppelin vinyl expensive but I have everything of course. I'm a heavy rocker and metal like Motorhead etc. Although I've never had long hair lol.

Thanks Mark for sharing your great, and interesting, personal story. Nice to hear (as I know) that they're all just imperfect humans like us, although being in Page's 9 million pound mansion - well I can't imagine that. Seem's we're not alone in our love and #1 ranking of Physical Graffiti.

The title song should have been on HOTH, nevertheless even with The Crunge on it (which qualifies as one of their worst songs ever) it is my fave Zep album.

@@bertbecker7532 was strange that HOTH was leftover for Graffiti. The Crunge never fails to bring a smile to my face. Just such a weird throwaway that works to me all these years. Nice to see it’s your #1 choice. Cool pick

You say you're a Stones guy. How can you say Plant is the greatest front man over Mick Jaeger? I don't agree with your statement. Your ranking is your ranking, so its okay.

Hi and thanks but you heard wrong. I said he was one of the greatest front men in the history of rock and roll and was the "golden god". Which he certainly was. But no one comes close to Jagger and the Stones to me.

I guess I am. I rank based on how much I listened to the albums over my lifetime. It's an honest assessment (at least for me). I can analalyze an album to death, but what really matters, at least to me, is what we actually listen to. And I know how much I've listened to an album over my 50 years of listening to them and cataloging them. If nothing else, it's honest and hopefully interesting. But that's my ranking. Everyone else has their personal taste. But I prefer people ranking by what they actually play and not just based on other rankings, trying to be cool or relevant. Anyway that's my take. I do really like III of course. It's a classic.
