- more progress is being made on our 302 engine build for the 1965 ford mustang "Iron Horse".
crankshaft is in, camshaft is in, oil pan is mocked up, timing chain is in, timing chain cover is mocked up, windage tray is mocked up, and crank scraper is mocked up!
now we are looking at the pistons, I have all the rings filed / gapped for nitrous and I did an oil expander ring mod to give us less friction!
but it is time to finally figure out our piston to valve clearance issues and settle them!

Pistons in my 340 are fly cut (relieved) by 120 thou, valve to piston clearance is at 55 thou...
Yes, the camshaft has a bit of lift and duration... 😎

If it all fits, it fits. Did you get your 45 buck HF dial gauge with magnetic base? If you did, you could determine exact TDC with one piston in. You could get two valve checker springs at the hardware store for 5 bucks? Then you could place your head on the block and MEASURE how far your valve goes down before it hits anything at TDC. This # will help guide you in all other decisions, and measuring all that stuff is FUN!!!!! Why do you rob yourself of such pleasure?🤣😁 Once you have exact TDC of #1, you can also verify the accuracy of your timing pointer. Look at all the birds you can kill with a 45 buck stone....your cat will love you.

Need to check my piston to deck hight, I thought I was going to be .011 in the hole but turns out she might be popping out just a little!?
Either that or its zero decked which I did not think would be the case but im defenatly not complaining about it lol
@@newguysgarage6802 awesome! up to .005 out of the hole is doable with a .040 gasket, but maybe no tighter than that. Check all of them once it is assembled cuz there can be variance. I got a short block from the junkyard that every single one was different, and one bank was out of the hole .020 and the other out .015. Some of the pistons had small valve "witness" marks and those pistons had no reliefs, just a very shallow dish. I cut reliefs into them because I had previously had my heads milled .040. It got two different gasket thicknesses to even out the chamber volumes. It ran great.
@@stuartwall8212 turns out the one I checked is about .003 out of the hole so im gonna call that basically zero decked lol 😆
And my piston to valve clearance is .148! So miles away! I do need to bring the eyebrows back a bit because the edge of the eyebrow and the edge of the valve basically touch but the actual depth is miles away 😃
That was with a used head gasket that measured .060 so I figure if I use a .040 head gasket that would bring me to .128 pvc and if I do 1.7 rockers that is about an extra .030 of lift which I think would bring me to .098 pvc?
I think.....im not 100% how the 1.7 affects lift at all parts of the curve 🤔
@@newguysgarage6802 If you consider TDC 12 oclock and measure PTV from 11 oclock to 1 oclock and various points between, you can approximate the PTVs in your running engine. If you have the 1.7 rockers handy. Your cat is gonna think you are bad ass when he sees that. 🤣
