  • There are currently about 40 million Americans over the age of 65, and those over 80 are the fastest-growing segment of our population. Rita Braver reports on a group of seniors who have banded together and found a way to make their golden years not just affordable, but truly "golden."

What is the fixation on age 65? "Old age" doesn't catch up with people until their LATE 70s. The real question is what happens to Kathy? Who will take care of her in her 80s and 90s? What happens to the Kathys of America?

WRONG...different people "age" at different rates. Some people are "old" BEFORE 65. Some people are still "young" long after 65.

      @janjbowman 4 года назад +10

Ghee Phua There is a suicide rate in the elderly because of insufficient family love that all the money in the world can’t fix because money can’t fix every thing . My mother took care of my grandmother close to the day she died in her own home and us kids helped her and never did this with resentment . Families should make plans to take care of their elderly up until they die . Elderly people need more than funds they need family love. I’ve worked in and out of care facilities for years and what old people lacked the most was family love. Bottom line .... don’t abandon your parents when they get old. I was honored to be able to care for Dad during his last 3 years. He passed in June, and I was devastated.
While difficult and time-consuming, people forget to mention that it is a heart-warming, sometimes downright fun, definitely rewarding time. Dad and I were at the opposite sides of every spectrum...religion, politics....anything. We used to switch between Fox and MSNBC. There was screaming. There was laughing. There was fun.
Now there is silence. I don’t know where I got it in my head he’d be with me for several more years. He died at 90.
If you are thinking of sharing your home with an older relative, do it. I worried about the problems, and there were some. But the rewards and the love ...and the fun, believe it or not... I will carry those memories with me forever.

I'm a healthcare provider, with a specialty in geriatrics...you're both right. How you age depends on many factors, I will venture to say that as with most things in life...acceptance and a hopeful disposition can make all the difference in the world, regardless of age. As a young 22 year old new nurse, now 22 years ago, I could never put a smile or seemingly satisfy the needs of an elderly male patient of mine...1 out of 29 satisfied patients I might add...lol. I used to chat it up every early a.m. with an 8O ish year old patient and I said to her that I pray I'm not a crab cake like this guy is when I get old. This woman told me:. "Jackie, an old crab cake was probably a young crab cake...you'll be just fine because you're a good and loving girl.".
Lesson:. The earlier you start to accept living and dying, then try to enjoy everything in between, and stay positive and get back up...regardless of how many times you fall....trust me, you'll be a much happier (and often a much healthier) person.

People are living longer but not better. What's the point of just existing with tubes up your nose wearing a diaper on a laundry list of medications and health issues. Either your loved one gives up their entire life to devote to your care or you are put in a facility. The aging population is about to.explode because this idea of keeping people alive at any cost with absolutely no quality of life is cruel.
If you're 90 plus years old you should be on hospice if your health has declined to the point where you can't do anything for yourself.

I saw a movie once called 'soylent green' and in it there was a system in place for the aged to choose when to leave. I think more than half the problem would be solved if those who fear life would stop barring the way for those who understand and are not afraid of death.
Let people go. Give people the opportunity to decide when and how they die and stop sacrificing one life to extend the life another to no purpose.
I am 73 with many health problems and no 'cure' possible. I will just get weaker and less capable. My son has put his life on hold for the last 13 years to give me a place to live, but 24/7 care isn't possible for him.

It is illegal to commit suicide or assist those who would like to have the option to suicide.
There are several inexpensive drugs that can bring a cessation to life with no pain or trauma, and those drugs are illegal to purchase for or provide to those who wish to end their life.
Your whole argument is based on what you feel and you want. Does your Grandmother wish to carry on as a burden to you and her other children??? Does your Grandmother wish to continue with the pain of illness and infirmity???
You wish to force them to continue because it is a compelling desire to be viewed a certain way by society, but what if the Grandparent wants the option to go on to the next life and begin the adventure anew. Is it your choice alone???
Your argument is based on your own selfish needs alone regardless of the need and desire of the elderly Grandparent. My children don't make me feel like a burden. I see my options and I have no desire to live as an invalid, urinating and defecating on myself and forcing others to give up their lives to clean me and feed me and keep me alive so that I can suffer every minute that I am forced to live like that.

It really is weird that, here in America, a country that is supposedly the richest and most powerful in the world, we have lotteries for things like housing and schooling, and enrollment periods for medical insurance. If you can't afford the insurance during the enrollment period, you have to wait a year and hope you don't need to go to a hospital in that time or you might need to file for bankruptcy.
It's a monstrously counterproductive system that makes no sense and causes unnecessary suffering.

As an EMT, as well as the son of a nurse and a paramedic, I can say this segment aged entirely to well. American fertility rates have been dropping for quite some time and there are not enough children being conceived to replace a retiring workforce.
There are also not enough nurses, PAs, doctors, et cetera to care for these demographics. COVID was really a boiling point where thousands of healthcare providers walked off the job.

It's a shame how we gave our elders to the dogs. Our nursing homes have just been a complete business on money rather than individual quality care. When it's government run, its mostly all about the group and the continual substitution of quantity over quality. America as a blessed nation has abused the medicare privileges in return for government control. A way to revive healthcare is to reinforce the insurance companies, cut abusive spending that robs from the needy (redistribution, illegal immigration costs, false homeless outreaches that feeds drug addiction), and get government out of nursing homes! Expanding medicare may be the answer but consider that's the purpose nursing homes are the most degrading health care system alongside state institutions.

American culture concerning their elderly is all wrong . My mother moved her elderly mother into her home and took care of her close to the day she died with us kids sharing the burdon. It was done because of love and real love that matters requires sacrifice . My son has told me he will move me and dad in his home when it’s time ......he remembers how his great grandmother was cared for . Our grandparents got married when they were 18 and 19 years old. Within a couple years they would have a child. But now people are having children in their 30s and 40s because we are told to go to college until we are 30. We are told not to get married, and have children until we’ve done everything we want to do with our life. So then, by the time we have our children, we are already pushing med age. This makes us older parents. And then our children, if they want to care for us, have to give up the time of their lives, when they would actually be setting aside the most amount amount of money. And it trickles down to them.
However, in some states, you can get trained as a home care provider for your family member. And you can actually get paid to take care of them. But you have to jump through all the hoops first. Not all needs to do this, but some do.

Same problem in France, my mother started to deteriorate at the age of 78, she could no longer walk with a string of medical conditions. To put her in a retirement home, it would have cost EUR 2000 a month and that was not even in Paris but in a small South-east town in the countryside. She did not see this thankfully. I do not even know how we would have afforded this, my brother and I working full-time in another EU country. We initially thought of using a full-time carer where, in France, the cost is deducted from the person's income tax. But when a person is bed-bound with a severe mental health issue, what do you do?

I fear for people who are relatively young and able in the ages of 30 and 50 right now who don't plan on having children despite that they can afford to raise one or two kids, because there might be a cushy retirement fund to lean on, but there won't be a loving and caring son or daughter to take care of them unconditionally when they become geriatric.
It also saddens me that many able people take advantage of state welfare funds despite that they can work, yet here are people who genuinely need help not able to receive any. This is more relevant now as politicians are proposing to give away so many free stuff in the billions, which means more unpaid liabilities, but that's what politicians do to secure votes.
