It was on a cloudy Thursday in 1976 when I saw the best ride ever at Flemington. It was the Oakes and Denise's Joy had drawn barrier 16. Going out of the straight jockey John Duggan had her one out and one back. On the home turn the short priced favourite , trained by CS Hayes, had shot 3 lengths clear. Denise's made the turn very awkwardly and Duggan was horizontal in the saddle for 50 meters. He managed to balance her and set after the leader grabbing her in the shadows of the post. It still remains to me as the most unforgettable moment in racing. She won at 16/1.
Such a quiet unassuming man, he was brilliant. I worked for Bart when John was around and he rode Ming Dynasty in the Queen Elizabeth at Randwick in '78. He put him in front in the heavy going and shot away on the rise to win by 13 lengths, still the best ride Ive ever see. R.I.P. Champ.
A great interview with JT, I got to see Mr Duggan ride in the late 70's and 80's, he was a true gentleman. I was very sad to learn that Mr Duggan passed away earlier this year, rest in peace Mr Duggan and thank you for the memories. Cheers Gary
Not many people know why poor John fell out of favour with Bart, they were walking up the stars of the Grandstand & John was behind Bart & he 'dated' up the backside.. Bart being a religious man took offence & barred him forever. Never got another ride.

Great interview 👍. One of the best. It's a shame Johnny Duggan completely left the industry. He was a champion human being and a great jockey.
