INSIDE RACING JOHN DUGGAN 2006
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.Год назад
It was the middle of 2006 when I set out to locate John Duggan who had all but disappeared from the Sydney racing scene. The former champion jockey hadn’t been seen at a race meeting for several years, and countless phone calls to some of his old friends and associates failed to reveal his whereabouts. I somehow managed to get a mobile number for John’s son who from memory was coaching a junior...

A SALUTE TO HARRY WHITE - A HORSEMAN’S HORSEMAN

I was thrilled beyond description when Harry White agreed to an interview for Sky’s Inside Racing programme in late 2003. Throughout his legendary riding career he’d been a little elusive where the media was concerned, and was expected to protect his privacy even more in retirement. Harry had been out of the saddle for eight years when Sky requested the interview, but happily agreed to give us ...

Beryl White’s passing at age 88 in mid July, brought great sadness to many in the Sydney racing world. Beryl had been predeceased by husband Geoff almost a decade earlier. For more than three decades the Whites had been a highly popular duo on Sydney tracks, as they cheered home a combination of their yearling purchases and homebreds.

Peter Cook was close to winning 4 Melbourne cups, absolute champion
Alf Mathews and Magical Miss, 100-1 and Trevor Carter On ya boys Why not? 👋😂☘️
I thought Vain won a Melbourne Cup also, not memtioned if he did.
Until watching this I didn’t think Vain was such a good horse.
TONY & LITTLE HONDO. WHAT A COMBINATION. THE BEST.
This is my grandmother Marlene's brother my Nana has dementia now and I never met her brother so I'm watching this in absolute awe
One of the best
I read John Hawkes turned took no phone calls for a few days after Unworldly broke down. Heart breaking
I’m calling Rubiton better than Sobar
I absolutely love that he took home Think Big and Hyperno
I agree with Harry. Don’t expect money, do it for the love of the horses and industry
Have you got the episode John did with Darren Gauci at his home to post
My partner since 2006 is james munro .son of warren munro and grandson of Darby munro.. nice video ❤
Without doubt in the top 3 or 4 jockeys ever
Vain was the best sprinter I have ever seen, absolutely magnificent and that's an understatement. In late 2021, we rescued his great, great etc grand-daughter who had been tossed aside as worthless. After renaming her, she had a brief racing career in Queensland and now is a terrific brood mare and the mother of a Pierata filly. She is carrying her second foal sired by Top Ranked. We love her and are so glad we saved her life and are continuing Vain's lineage. The filly is ten months old today. ❤
Wonderful interview - Roy was a great jockey - rode many outstanding horses - Galilee, light Fingers, Biscay, Gunsynd, Taj Rossi - I am an old bugger and I saw all of them - many memories !
Century?? I worked for a short time for Dave Leighton,Mornmoot Stud
@@pauljosephcleary - a damn good sprinter

Any chance of uploading the episode of Darren Gauci you did at his home 🤞🤞
100 percent 😊
Great interview 👍. One of the best. It's a shame Johnny Duggan completely left the industry. He was a champion human being and a great jockey.
WOW WHAT A HORSE!
The best sprinter i have seen
I was cheering for Georgie Porgie from the age of 12 years. The Punters adored him
LOVED that you spoke so highly of George Moore/ George Porgie
A gentleman.....
Love these wonderful old stories. Thank you John.
Not many people know why poor John fell out of favour with Bart, they were walking up the stars of the Grandstand & John was behind Bart & he 'dated' up the backside.. Bart being a religious man took offence & barred him forever. Never got another ride.
Unbelievable story, this is what racing is all about,❤
Great horseman and great story, well donw team
When I was a kid back in the 60's I strapped a horse, I think it's name was Prince Tirage, Jimmy came to Sydney and the trainer I worked for got Johnson to ride it, he got beaten on it but I have never see a horse come back to scale with so many welt marks on it, he hit it everywhere, even down the side of it's head...as a kid who loved his hose I was devastated for the poor horse, never seen that before or since and hope I never will
Ray Selkrig....couldn't make the weight? That shows how much "weights" have changed....Ray was hardly a heavy weight rider
This is a fantastic interview. Two genuine horse lovers reminiscing.
Champion jockey , but also a champion character. One of racing’s greatest careers. I saw him win at Randwick on Baguette as a kid. Dad backed it , too.
Legendaryman
I was talking to George a few years ago(you can see by my pseudonym, what I think of George) anyway I was talking to George and he was actually scared of riding in Melbourne, not scared of anything happening in a race but he was scared of the Stewards, Melbourne Jockeys could put vising jockeys over the fence and the visiting jockey would be the one that gets suspended To back up what George says there was a Race run in Melbourne, it would have been the early 70's it was only a small field, maybe 6 or 7 runners, from memory it might have been the C.B. Fisher Plate, it was over a mile and a half, the leader(and winner) was a horse called Scotch And Dry, it got out with a huge lead, maybe 30 lengths in front, Higgins was on Gunsynd, Peter Cook was on a horse called Stormy Seas, the rest were ridden by local Victorian Jockeys....after the race the Stewards called Cook in and asked why he let Scotch And Dry get out with such a big lead, why didn't he chase him? no questions for Higgins or any Melbourne Jockeys, it was the lone Sydney Jockey that "lacked initiative" he was suspended(I think for 2 months) Then there were the Protests Big Philou (Local) against Nausori (upheld, local wins) Travesty Marwong (Local) against Our Poetic Prince (upheld, local win) Another travesty and of course the double Protests against Choisir where they were both upheld and both locals won, even though it was down the straight and Choisir came down the inside and both Protestors came down the outside and Choisir bolted in, I remember the commentators comments at the time, "this is a frivolous protest and will be thrown out an the Jockeys will be fined for protesting, a total waste of their time...I knew they were wrong and it would be upheld, the grounds were always irrelevant I know there were many more that I can't remember the horse names but every protest in Melbourne where there is a Local and a Visitor, the Local always wins One more and I can remember the names of the Jockeys but not the horses, it was the Moonee Valley Stakes (now the Stutt Stakes)Craig Williams protested against Ricky Cartwright, get this...on the grounds of intimidation, the horses never touched but Craig said his horse felt "intimidated" how do you quantify how much ground that costs? even if it was a real thing? (Protest upheld, Local wins) Melbourne was a cesspool of corruption (or pure biased incompetence) to which there is no defense......for a long time There were a few others too but my point is, George was right, Higgins could put George over the fence and if George pushed back he would get suspended
George was the only Jockey I have ever seen who could win on horses that weren't good enough to win, their races, I remember very early in my punting career him winning a couple of Derbies both for TJ the first was 1962 on Summer Prince, Bogan Road was the best horse and had won the Rosehill guineas by 8 lengths, Bogan Road was by Wilkes(the sire of Vain) so the one chink in his Armour might be the distance if it was solidly run, Moore went straight to the front and run along, Bogan Road was forced to chase up the rise where Moore was waiting for him, Moore rested up the rise and when it looked like the fave had him, Moore had a kick in the locker, Bogan Road had spent what little chance he had going up the rise, no doubt who was the best horse, Bogan Road! Then the very next year Moore road Summer Fiesta, he went back to stone motherless last, then about the 800 he took off and went around the field and was 4 in front by the time they reached the 600, he then coasted around the turn and up the rise, because he was so far in front the fave Castanea had to chase from a long way out, he chased full bore up the rise, again George still had powder to burn, Castanea could not sustain a 600 metre run, no doubt who was the best horse, Castanea! They were just two rides that stick in my memory, Moore did it all the time, never been any other jockey before or since that even comes close P.S. The rise is no longer there, they replaced it with a speed bump that you would not even notice, the old Rise was like a mountain in comparison
back in that era so many horses wore rings, today no horse wears rings and yet today jockeys ride so short that they ALL ride on the horses mouth, you would think rings would be a greater asset today than it was back then, does anyone know if they have been banned? can't think of a reason why they would be
Fancy someone saying 'i hope he falls' anyone in racing knows that is a disgraceful thing to say, no matter how much you may have a beef with that person.
Another great interview with a great Australian. He really has lived more than a full life and 80years and feels like he can go round again, good for him.❤
A great interview with JT, I got to see Mr Duggan ride in the late 70's and 80's, he was a true gentleman. I was very sad to learn that Mr Duggan passed away earlier this year, rest in peace Mr Duggan and thank you for the memories. Cheers Gary
Pretty sure Edgar's second wife was the Widow of Neville Sellwood another great Australian Jockey whose wins included Melbourne Cups and English Derbies
I'll never forget the 1969 Golden Slipper, I hadn't been married long and thought Special Girl was a good thing but....my wife thought Vain was unbeatable and she wasn't a punter but unbeknownst to me, she put my wages on Vain, she was that confident, she was always Cool, calm and collected during the race, it was after that race that she showed me the ticket(TAB betting back then), I wasn't sure whether to be mad or happy, I went with happy....after the Slipper I was a die hard fan (of my wife) and Vain of course!
This was a great interview. So real and very sad about Jamie. I loved how he said he was proud of all his children.❤
Such a great interview. Jt does his homework and is so respectful. Its just a joy to watch these real gentlemen and Aussie legends.❤
It was on a cloudy Thursday in 1976 when I saw the best ride ever at Flemington. It was the Oakes and Denise's Joy had drawn barrier 16. Going out of the straight jockey John Duggan had her one out and one back. On the home turn the short priced favourite , trained by CS Hayes, had shot 3 lengths clear. Denise's made the turn very awkwardly and Duggan was horizontal in the saddle for 50 meters. He managed to balance her and set after the leader grabbing her in the shadows of the post. It still remains to me as the most unforgettable moment in racing. She won at 16/1.
Remarkable man. RIP Jimmy
Right up there as 1 of the best ever
Physically lifted Rain Lover over the line in 1969
Well I was a 10 year old at the time , and his winning ways got me interested in the Thoroughbreds , and I still follow the game 54 years later , not many could have done what he did and it's good to know his blood is still out there , he is a benchmark in horse racing imho , and I thank the horse for giving me the interest of my life time
Most brilliant horse i have seen
May very well have been the best sprinter ever but staying sound it would've been a formality
Vain is the most brilliant horse i have ever seen since the mid sixties. Same number of starts as Frankel who they claim as the worlds best .. Funny Frankel in 8 or 9 starts over a mile never got within 4 seconds of Winx
@48tilt Hello I commented recently on another video claiming Winx and Black Caviar were the best 2 horses my reply was " you know what Tulloch and Vain would've done to them?... embarrassed them.
@@harrycallahan9069 Couldn't agree more. Black Caviar was a protected species wouldn"t get within three of Vain
Most brilliant horse i have seen since the mid sixties. Never saw Todman. Sorry Winx, Kingston Town, Dulcify. In an era when they put great horses in races they might get beaten in , unlike todays protected species.. Should probably never have started in the Sires at Randwick after a lot of rain and lack of trackwork. Vain was then thrown in as an early three year old over the toughest mile in Australia in the Mooney Valley Stakes with a strange jockey against the best performed Australasian post war horse ever to race in America , the mighty Daryl's Joy Cox Plate Derby only had four starts in Australia from memory. Glad i drove all the way to Widden in 1987 to see this absolute freak in 1987 before he died. TJSmith was speechless after the 12 length win in the Cravan A. Never seen that happen before with Tommy. I watched him win the Champagne at Randwick by 10 lengths in 1.92.Australian record for two year old. Col Tidy that great bookmaker punter always rated Vain as the best horse he had ever seen and he owned Zeditave 14 wins from 17 starts.
Jim Moloney took the blame for both of Vain's defeats, he was underdone, he took the opposition a bit lightly, didn't want to gallop him on bog training tracks before the Champagne and thought his class would get him home at Moonee Valley, he didn't count on running into another Champ in Darryl's Joy, to beat Darryl's Joy even Vain had to be at his best, but both defeats were revenged at his very next start as added proof that Jim was right, Vain never should have tasted defeat Can you imagine a 3 year old running in a Group One Handicap with 5kg's over WFA today? people today don't get that feeling of a Champion doing the impossible, not just winning, The feeling is hard to quantify in words, I remember Tobin Bronze winning the Doncaster with about 9 stone 8, or 62kg's, he gave Cabochon 2 stone(almost 13kg's) plus 2 lengths start from the furlong and ran him down, Cabochon won the Stradbroke carrying top weight, he was a high class horse, I still remember how I felt that day in 1967, it was more than a different era, it was a different world, Champions did it tough, they were never wrapped in cotton wool and they were never Koala Bears!
@@georgemoore7186 Great read George. I remember Tobin Bronze beating Cabochon that day. I was in the ledger as a kid. Named my boxer dog Cabochon . Insult to compare that protected species Black Caviar with this freak. One start over 1400 as a five year old LOL. Old Crisp and Takeover Target would be having a giggle. Different ERA for sure. All the great sprinters Vain , Luskin Star Todman had won over a mile or more by the time they were three. When racing was about serious punting. Ran into Laurie Bricknell on the Gold Coast the other day. Said he is lucky if he can get on for 2K now Pathetic. Criminal. Corporates and decimal boards have killed the game. Part of our heritage has died. I was a book for a couple of years . When i stated at Wentwoth Park 1980 there were 52 bookmakers in the Paddock including the away ring plus another dozen in the Ledger. You could get on for 20k anytime and that was the dogs. Dog bookies bet to losing figures on nearly every race. Really miss the old days. Heaven. Remember Ray Hopkins screaming at John Stollery on the next stand with punters trying to get on "you have got 98 on your Board" to which Stollery screamed " I dont give a F**K." Heaven.
@@48tilt I hear racing shows these days talking about how they bet in telephone numbers today, I can't get on even in races like Caulfield/Melbourne Cups to win more than $2,000, and I am on a Pension They're accountants, not Bookies, I remember being at the races as a kid back in the 60's and being mesmerised by the cash, both Punters and bookies betting in $1000's everything was different, Today they can't tell the difference between a Champion and a Hero(because they don't have heroes anymore) Black Caviar and Winx were undoubtedly Champions.....but they were NEVER Heroes, they were more akin to a Bully beating up on the weaker kids, kids they knew they could beat, To explain what I mean, Audie Murphy wasn't a Hero because he was the best shot and killed Germans from behind Cover, he was a Hero because he was out in the open giving them a chance to kill him....and getting it done, that is the difference between a Hero and a Champion That day Tobin Bronze did what he did was the Easter weekend, the Sydney Cup was on the Monday and was won by a horse called Galilee also carrying the grandstand, I remember Prince Grant who was a very good horse led and must have been 25/30 lengths in front at about the 700, by the time they straightened Galilee had him in the twinkling of an eye and raced away to win by 5, Prince Grant easily held down second, he wasn't stopping, the best part was you could get on both of them, from Memory I think Tobin was around 5 or 6/1 and Galilee was around evens, Winx and Black Caviar races were mostly barrier trials, you could not get on them, you could never feel part of the victories, Emotions are hard to explain but being there that long weekend was like remembering where you were when Kennedy was shot...or when Elvis Died....or when your kids were born not just a memory but an emotion, today's generation will never feel that, so I understand when they don't know what they missed Have a great day
@@georgemoore7186 Memories. Galilee was still the best stayer i have seen. . Agree about barrier trials. Horses today are set to not lose in races . . .No point in stringing 20 race wins together if they beat nothing and don't run times. Look at that last race of Frankel. Pathetic and they call Frankel the best LOL Frankel and Black Caviar take the cake. Winx did all she could in Australia and ran times. Beyond me that you can have a horse like that and not take her overseas. It is called being challenged. They all need to sit down and have a good yarn with Crisp and Bernborough Emotions. My Grandmother had a bit of money so she took me into the members at Randwick to watch Vain win the Champagne in 1.92. by 10 lengths. I still remember sitting their stunned and shaking in disbelief at what i had just seen. I saw all Vains three Sydney runs. Yes bookmakers are accountants today. In my view the other thing that killed the game was rebates. They should have been banned years ago. You cant make money betting into flat markets. Zeljko started the big slide I dont think there is a answer. Sometimes i think it is a bad dream and i will wake up and there will be a hundred bookies in my back yard betting to 95% each way.. I wish there was an answer but i think the game finished. Racing shows today are a joke. Look at the main channel and all they talk about everything except form and serious betting but then again there is no serious punting these days. All about levelling out the playing field reducing the ability to get your money on and screwing the mug punter
@@48tilt You can sum it all up in two words SELF INTEREST What I think is by far the biggest detriment to racing is it is run so the few can make huge money, BIG BREEDERS are the main culprits and they own a lot of racehorses but that is only so they can keep the mouths shut of high profile trainers and Jockeys, it is the tail wagging the dog, they run races for the horses they are breeding, not the other way round, they should be breeding horses for the races we are running, hence no stayers The thing is when you breed sprinters it is a fast turn around, if you buy a sprinting bred yearling you have a pretty good idea if it is any good before the sales come around the next year, if it is any good you go back to buy another one, if it's no good, you are back the next year to buy another one anyway, if you buy a stayer, you might not be back for 3 or 4 years, that is why Australia breeds sprinters, not because they are popular but because that is where the money is in Breeding, more to it than that but I will spare you the details Then you have Maher and Eustace with close to a 1000 horses on their books and Waller/Godolphin close behind, and a couple of other stables not far away, they say we can't do anything about it, Rugby league brought in Salary caps for that exact same reason, in Hong Kong trainers are limited to 60 horses and everyone has 60 horses, it is a level playing field, there is an answer, you can't cure Greed, Rebates as you mentioned are a symptom of the same greed, then you have the greed from TAX, it keeps going up and no one gives a damn about the customers(Punters) I stopped going to the races 25 years ago as the crowd were drunks, not punters, there was no atmosphere, most people at the races go for the party, not the races, they don't bet and they don't even know races are being run, I can see a day when racing will just implode, the TAB has cartoon racing and punters bet on it, the cartoon horses even parade before Jockeys mount up, are they freakin' kidding? they think Punters are all brain dead!, In short, too few snouts in the trough it's a trough that 99% just don't get a look int to and I haven't even mentioned the cheating that goes with greed I'll get off my soap box now Have a great day
A very nice bloke who I had the pleasure of sharing a beer with once or twice. A very down to earth genuine person. RIP
