i seriously dont get this, i have a super cute super friendly bunny right here with me and for some reason i keep watching these videos and going awwww, when theres some awwww right here licking me. i just cant get enough bunny!
Golden retreivers are very gentle by nature. I sent a video link to my breeder last year and she mentionned that she was not surprised with my dog's behavior. She also mentionned that several other of her friends who have goldens and rabbits noticed the same gentleness. My dog had puppies in the past so it could also be a factor that is contributing to the extra gentleness. The only thing I did was introduce them and oscar spent all his time out of the cage when I was there to supervise at first
Outstanding advice! Building trust is the key! You can bond much faster with a bunny if you spend time lying in the floor with it. Often it's best to totally ignore the bunny & let him come to you on his own terms. In the wild, hawks will snatch bunnies and fly off with them. This is why bunnies are instinctively nervous if they are picked up too fast, But keep trying & make them feel snug & secure when you pick them up. Most bunnies will get used to being picked up, but a few of them never do.
Oh, my buns do the "QUIT MOVING MY STUFF" all the time. They have the ritual, and you don't mess with it. He is beyond adorable and I love how comfortable they are together.
this is really cute! I had a friend who had an actual wolf as pet. It lived pretty much like a dog, mainly because it was well treated. This is just to show that social behaviour prevails over instincts
I have a mini rex bunny at the moment *pokes avatar and videos* One day, after I tranfser to university, I may get a lop to keep her company. Those ears are to die for!
ah that is nice of you to say, I know bunnies are not all treated like becasue they are very different than dogs or cats but given some times and patience they do trust you and become really great pets. I've always wanted a bunny so I did not get this for my daughter like many parents do. He was an easter gift for all of us ;)
We've raised several rabbits and they've all been really social except for one of our current bunnies. We bought her when she was about 8 weeks old and she seemed to be scared of us. We later found out that she just hates to be picked up. In fact, she still runs from us if she thinks we are going to pick her up. Now when we want to take her somewhere we use a pet carrier. We just tell her to get in the carrier and she does. She knows if she doesn't, we will have to catch her and pick her up!
my dog is a big suck she will let the rabbit and cat walk all over her and she does nothing. Its the gentle golden retriever nature. My cousin has a yellow lab, her husband is training her lab for hunting. She came for a visit last year and did not notice I had the rabbit in my hands she took one sniff and realize it was a rabbit and went for it. She tried to bite him and got my hand which is good because if it was his leg she would have broken it. I'm so used to how gentle my dog is I forget not all dogs are like this :S
Sylvie Laf Same here, my dog is so nice and friendly (puppy), and love it so much, but when I think of other dogs, and situations like that, dogs and bunnies are like lions and a defenseless aardvark (with no claws and holes)
YES! They are very social creatures and have a tendency to bond for life with a mate. In the wild they live in a 'warren' (group of rabbit, kind of like a pack) and have a hierarchy of the pecking order. And they communicate a ton, if there's a predator nearby, a rabbit will stomp his feet to let other rabbits know.
in the wild they don't generally hang out together but if you get a couple of bunnies when they are young they do enjoy having a friend and groom each other. If they are alone they might lick you if they trust and accept you. Mine will hop on the couch and come snuggle when he wants to be petted. When he feels like has had enough he hops off and streches out on the floor. He is almost like a very independant and noiseless cat...lol
Be patient with you bunny, spend lots of time on the floor, let him approach you. YOu can use treats this will get him to come closer. Just pet at first don't pick up. This will build trust. Bonding with you bunny takes months. My daugther also feel our bunny does not like her but she does not follow what I've asked her to do she just yanks him out of his cage and carries him around which he does not mind but the abrupt pick up is what he does not care for. he likes to be petted first!
You might be thinking of hares/jackrabbits, which are actually a different species. In the wild, rabbits live together in warrens. They're very social and can form life-long bonds with another rabbit. Rabbits might seem shy and even anti-social to people, but that's because they're prey animals and they see us a predators. They warm up to you once you've earned their trust.
i have a 6 months old havana black rabbit a female, her name's smurfette shes' sweet and kind and she used her litter box right away (1- 3 day!!!) but when ever i pick her up (i learned how to do it) she scratches me with her claws triying to break free, does she hates me or does she dosent like me to hold her or just needs her claws get cut? (its hard shes' freaking cute!) PS. my eyes are burning from the cuteness of your bunny!!!
Hello! This is an absolutely precious video. I just wanted to ask you...I noticed you have a golden retriever (or at least he/she looks like one). Do you find that it mixes well with the rabbit? If so, how did you socialize them? Again, thank you for posting. This is adorable.
Yes he is very much alive and living like a king, see my video showing his living quarters. What I did to make him friendly is spending a lot of time on the floor with him. Instead sitting on the couch I would just be lying on the floor watching TV so that he would get used to me. When I want to pick him up I would not tower over him and bend over to pick him up as this would just make his survival insticts kick in and he would run the other way. I would go down on all 4 then approach
Actually, rabbits have a social hierarchy system and do hang out together in the wild, all the time. Rabbits are social by nature and while some might be comfortable with just human companionship, most long for rabbit company and show signs of loneliness. It's a common mistake to believe they're creatures of solitude as a pet store employee told me the same thing, but upon doing research I found out the opposite.
Very cute! I have had my 2 lop ears for nearly a year now! Romeo n Juliet are brother(had the op) n sister n totally different Romeo loves cuddles n always wanting more n she doesn't wanna know! She is getting a lot better now as she is learning that she does not get put down until she stops scratching me n nibbling me once she is calm she will get a treat then put down on the floor! Both love my 13 year old golden retriever! Will do a video of them playing, please check out my RUclips clips!
OMG I'm so sorry to hear that! I'm so attached to my little furr ball I would be devastated if something were to happen to him. It will be a tough easter for you, take care sweetie.

Yes, they live in large groups in the wild and establish a hierarchy among themselves (and among any non-rabbits they might live with).
